dusang February 29, 2016 Share February 29, 2016 The trailer for Gods of Egypt looked atrocious and I pray that I live to see a day where someone in the process (casting, actor, agents, directors, someone) looks at a script about ancient Egypt and either NEVER says "We should get that hunky Scottish dude," or at some point before opening days says, "I think it's inappropriate that we've gotten that hunky Scottish dude*," but there's also something disturbing about a #2 opening at $14M being a disappointment. So while I don't want to defend that movie at all I also sort of wonder what exactly the studio was expecting spending $140M on a late-February, non-franchise opening. I also wonder exactly where that money went because the effects in the trailer looked awful. *Not to suggest that Gerard Butler is the only problematic cast member -- the majority of the cast is equally inappropriate. 2 Link to comment

That’s after multiple overseas licensing deals and a whopping tax credit paid by the Australian government to have the film shot there, which covered roughly 46 percent of the budget. That tax credit is a financial game-changer, and means that the studio can see a profit if the film can in time ring up $40 million-$50 million in its domestic run, a possibility with an opening in the mid-teen millions. The budget was around 35 million, so I can't see it making back its money domestically unless it has really, really good legs. It was advertised more as a humorous fish-out-of-water romp with the humor of Tina Fey being romanced by all these men because she's a "Kabul 10", but they didn't really go with that angle nearly as much as you thought they would have. Spectre has been available to stream since January, on DVD/Blu Ray for nearly three weeks, yet this weekend it somehow had a per theater average six times higher than last weekend, and also higher than that of half the movies in the Top 10? Maybe Sony thought that if the movie still missed the $200M mark this weekend, the curious accounting wouldn't stand out too much. The Brothers Grimsby is still a flop, ten or twenty thousand from its total in either direction won't make a difference in how it's viewed. Yummy, sloppy fudge... I read a lot comparing it to Robert Altman's original movie of M*A*S*H and they made it look like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. I don't know how you would market the movie M*A*S*H* today. With Disney's knack for merchandising, it's possible that they'll be in the black on that deal before the next movie comes out. Edit: I do think the deal was a win-win situation. Hell would have frozen over before Lucas could have made a sequel this good that would pull in over 2 billion dollars at the box office while surrounded by yes men and using his kids as a focus group. This way, his legacy is passing the torch to let others restore his beloved franchise to glory rather than ending up with a Jar Jar Binks effigy carved on his tombstone. vibeology March 28, 2016 Share March 28, 2016 BvS is one of those movies though were nothing will convince me that any one person made it a success. Any director would have had a record-breaking hit with it. Any Batman or any Superman would have been big. They could have brought back Val Kilmer and Brandon Routh and I still imagine it'd make roughly the same money. The concept is the most important part here. The idea of these two iconic superheroes facing off is what had people buying tickets. So good for Snyder, I guess, but I don't think he had much of anything to do with the movie's financial success. 3 Link to comment

From the biggest March and all-time best WB opening weekend (until the actual numbers, when it finished below Deathly Hallows - Part 2) to being lucky if it will end up outgrossing the R-rated, 2D Deadpool...quite the tailspin for Batman vs. Superman, in a week's time. Looking at comparable movies, Furious 7 had four weeks at number one last year around this time, and two years ago Captain America 2 had three solid weeks. It's actually crazy how this movie broke pre-sale records and then ended up dying in just a matter of days. I don't think we've ever seen an example of word of mouth so effectively killing a movie ever. 1 Link to comment

gator12 April 11, 2016 Share April 11, 2016 When fans were complaining about Man of Steel and also how it was a financial disappointment one would think they would fix something but no instead their executive and actors came out and threw shade or outright dissed Marvel. Say what you want about Marvel but they are collecting their coins. Other than the Nolan's Trilogy DC can't say that about the last decade. Good news for DC though, they have been winning for 40 years before that though. The WB is a mess, if their other films come out short they might have to rely on an Harry Potter Franchise that has no Harry, Hermione and Ron in it. I wonder if Universal Studio (they top Disney last year in terms of box office) will do well this year again... making them and Disney being the only studios to make a profit in 2016 like they did in 2015? Dejana April 19, 2016 Author Share April 19, 2016 Dejana, (or anyone else) do you know the reason behind premiering Hollywood production overseas first? I think there are a few factors. Countries can have movies of their own that take up screens, and some nations even have quotas on how many Hollywood movies can be shown at once. China limits the amount of time a US movie can be shown in theaters and for several summer weeks, there's a blackout period to allow the local market to flourish. Some more detail about the vagaries/challenges of the Chinese market here and here. Countries can different holiday periods where theaters are closed or poorly attended, so a good date for the US might be bad in another part of the world, or vice versa. Here in America, Labor Day weekend is generally pretty dire for moviegoing and Super Bowl weekend isn't where you want to release a superhero blockbuster, but in Europe or Asia or wherever, it could be just another weekend. Every four years when it's the Men's World Cup, Hollywood movies often avoid it because theater attendance overseas can decline. For prestige/Oscar wannabes, they might want to build momentum with awards season, to capitalize on the hype, so they can advertise it as an Oscar nominee/hopeful and not just some talky subtitled/dubbed drama that may not translate as instantly as action or slapstick. Sometimes, I think studios just want to take the money and run, because they know the movie flopping in America would ruin its chances overseas. With a big action spectacle, it may not matter but with a talkier comedy or drama, a bad US performance in America could be the death knell for its prospects on the global market. I remember after Gigli epically tanked its release in other countries was curtailed (its worldwide total was ultimately $7.2 million, $6 million from the US). 2 Link to comment
