WB needs to look at their life choices, they have been planning Batman vs Superman for two years and Zootopia who's first trailer I saw was in like late January make more money than it Domestic and Global...

Disney really is the King of the World, even that one flop they had this year no one knows they made it.

Okay, first I both agree with your take on WB and love your phrasing of it.  Hee!

Second, what was Disney's flop??

Also, on the subject of Jungle Book at what point are we as a society going to start discussing the legacy of Jon Favreau and/or how immensely rich that guy must be by now??

Yes The Finest Hours was the Disney's flop, I guess they knew it would be a flop since they dump it in January.

People are kind of surprise that Jon Favreau is working with Disney again, I wonder if he and Marvel didn't have the best relationship.

They really should talk more about Jon Favreau, he basically is the reason why Marvel is the Kingdom that it is as part of the Disney Empire.

Speaking of Disney, which will come out on top? Alice through the looking Glass or X-Men, both come out on May 27th

Pretty much everything in the Top 10 was underestimated except for Captain America, and two movies changed places. Mother's Day went up almost 33% compared to last weekend, a record-breaking jump. Can it save face and beat New Year's Eve in the Garry Marshall holiday rom-com canon? If so, will Thanksgiving be next?

  1. Captain America: Civil War   $179,139,142
  2. The Jungle Book   $24,488,436 | $287,600,701
  3. Mother's Day   $11,087,076 | $22,806,766
  4. The Huntsman: Winter's War   $3,948,835 | $40,732,455

It is rather extraordinary to see so many $300 million movies this early in the year and that the combined star power of Batman and Supes won't have it finishing better than fifth for 2016 (but probably worse, as time goes on). The days when The Dark Knight made so much money that they casually pushed Half-Blood Prince back eight months to balance out their slate, must seem a very distant memory for WB.

3 weeks and the worldwide gross for Civil War has passed Batman v. Superman. Next week it should pass it in the domestic. What a choke job by Warners.

In other news the MCU has grossed $10 billion for Disney. Minus the $ 4b purchase price and production and marketing costs, nice investment by Disney. I guess you could say that about Pixar and Lucasfilms as well.

I saw The Jungle Book this weekend and was surprised how filled the theater was. Especially for a movie that has been out for a few weeks. I'm glad it's doing so well, and quietly, too. IOW, so much ink is spilled in talking about how much the big tentpoles bring in, it's nice to see a well done movie not get a lot of write up and still really bring people into the theaters.

I had no idea Marvel went for the same price as Lucasfilm!  And Pixar was $7.4B?!  How did I not know that?  I'm surprised because my gut would say that Lucasfilm was worth more than Marvel (at time of purchase) but clearly my gut is undervaluing and overvaluing various assets.

Also, yay for Captain America -- it was SO MUCH FUN!!  BvS was SO BORING I literally checked my watch to see how much more I had to sit through.  AND CA:Civil War balanced so many characters without leaving you going "who the fuck was that?" at any point, whereas BvS was 2.5 hours of "WTF is going on??"  (Obvs, IMHO.)

Neighbors 2 joins the list of underwhelming 2016 sequels; the original made in $49 million in its opening weekend two years ago. Will Now You See Me 2 buck the trend in a few weeks? I'm not optimistic.

It won't matter. Actors can get away with bombs for years before it becomes a problem. Actresses, on the other hand, get maybe 1 or 2 under-performing movies before it becomes a career problem.

Another weekend, another underwhelming sequel (or two). Will studios ever learn that not all successful movies need follow-ups? And it was about time for Disney to have a miss, but ouch, what a flop! Pretty much everything that could go wrong for this one did: the post-Avatar 3D boom faded long ago, the sequel was 3-4 years too late and audiences have soured on wacky Johnny Depp persona. Then, as the movie was already tanking, his divorce took an extremely ugly turn. Back in 2010, Alice In Wonderland had an opening weekend of  $116,101,023 on its way to $334M.

I feel like these numbers should always include the cost of there making in order to get the most accurate understanding. Because another film is doing a okay at 28 million.

I usually leave out the budget info because the box office charts don't always include it for every movie, it's prone to major inaccuracies (studios often significantly underreport the real number) and the reported budget doesn't include the marketing costs, which can run in the nine figures for a big budget tentpole. You're right, though, it does give a different picture of how a movie is performing relative to expectations.

X-Men: Apocalypse is what happens when a superhero franchise runs out of ideas

Quote

The movie only exists because the X-Men franchise must go on, at least in the studio's eyes

This is one of the big dangers for the extended franchise model of filmmaking — that characters and series will be kept alive not because there’s a story to tell, but because the franchise must be kept alive.

We’ve already seen this happen with Sony’s ho-hum efforts to reboot the Spider-Man series — leading to two competent but essentially repetitive Amazing Spider-Man films that struggled to justify themselves. Like X-Men: Apocalypse, they were franchise placeholders, existing only because some movie with Spider-Man in the title had to exist.

Me Before You is holding well; should finish a bit above 50 million domestic, I believe. Not a blockbuster like The Fault in Our Stars, but doing better than any recent Nicholas Sparks movie.

We're definitely going to get a Conjuring 3. I kind of think it would be hilarious if they essentially remade the Haunting in Connecticut for Part 3, since that franchise attempt is dead in the water. The original is almost a decade old anyway.

Warcraft opened to $165m in China, expect a sequel.

It seems like it depends...even in China, the movie shows signs of frontloading and studios get less money from international grosses, generally. Still, if the sequel costs less, possibly.

Whit Stillman looks like he's finally going to release a film that will make above 10 million dollars in the box office. (Although in 2016 money, Barcelona made 14 million, but still.) I love indie movies, and I love that he hasn't compromised himself in order to make more money.

So, I wonder whose job it is to figure out how to turn The Jungle Book into a franchise?

Will the WB version still come out, that's what I wonder.

Man, I feel really terrible for Zac Efron. He needs a hit like a crackhead.

I'm just crossing my fingers that the repeated flops drive him to doing porn rather than drugs.

Pixar repeats at the top as the new Independence Day fails to capture the audience of the original...or even make as much money the 1996 opening weekend, when the average US movie ticket cost $4.42. Will Smith isn't the box office draw he used to be, but in this movie, he'd have made a difference.

Dory is Disney's fourth movie over $300m domestic in 2016. Even in these inflationary times with the IMAX and 3-D upcharges that's impressive. And we've still got Pete's Dragon, Moana and Rogue One coming.

A little surprised how well Tarzan did. You can't underestimate the appeal of the pretty, pretty people, I guess.
