S01.E11: Partnerships In The Night

Stephanie and Kimmy form a strange partnership, D.J.'s boss retires, and Max has Jackson and Ramona right where he wants them.

Everyone looked great in their Indian clothes. I liked the theme.

Max went from the child who didn't know how to lie to blackmailer real fast.

Too many reflexive in-jokes (The View, Raven-Symone, "child actress", even the self-aware utteration of "Mylanta"). Ugh.

Oh, is this whole J-Money thing too damn much like Barry Goldberg and his Big Tasty thing?  Heck, come to think of it.. way back with Bud Bundy and Grandmaster B. What I'm really saying is that it's a totally dated reference/joke, because either way it's an 80s thing.

That was some mighty fine cultural appropriation there.

It was rather unnecessary (and annoying). It makes neither the show, nor the Doctor (who asked for the theme--right?), look very good.

Speaking of the Old Doc not looking that good... I was rather surprised they didn't have a scene with the old guy trying to justify his decision to DJ, or apologizing.  They just left it hanging with him looking kind of like a jerk.

That said, they totally ducked the fact that DJ would have to buy into the partnership. You don't give them away. Someone can hand you their patients, but the actual business has equity (as well as lots of ongoing expenses--I mean even in Chinatown, where we see the outside of the clinic, the rent has to be huge). Does she have the money? She likely can't even take out a business loan that easily--she's not the owner of the house she lives in. Speaking of which... does Danny make her pay rent or not? He's got this two to three million dollar investment, so realistically a fair rent would be... well... many times the rent of almost anywhere else in the country.

I'd assume that Danny has millions to spare from his thirty continuous years of being a tv personality in a top ten media market. Two out of three of his kids live in his three million dollar house, the third is worth tens or hundreds of millions herself (I think).

This is actually something that I, sadly, have some insight into. As the widow of a fallen firefighter she would receive death benefits from the city and state as well as from the National Public Safety Officers Benefits. In addition she would receive monthly social security benefits for each of the children until they turn 18. Since I assume her dad is letting them live in the house rent free and they just have to pay utilities, it would not be outside the realm of possibility for her to buy into the business at all.

I just assume that DJ is receiving benefits from her husband's death as well as paying rent.  I don't think that DJ has any money issues, outside of the transitional phase of her getting used to being a single parent.  Danny is probably charging her a reduced rent of course than what he would rent out the property for.  She doesn't have a nanny or any paid help.  Stef and Kimmie are helping for free.  Stef has no money but I'm sure Kimmie is paying her share for her and Ramona.  Her business isn't booming but I'm sure Fernando helps take care of Ramona's expenses.

Also when the show started DJ was looking for a house for her and the boys.  It may have been something more modest than what she and her husband would of been able to get but I never got the impression that money was a huge issue per se.

I can see DJ being able to buy into half of the equity or at least work out a reduced payment in salary in exchange for taking half of the responsibility.  Before the offer she was willing to venture out on her own so I'm sure she has some money if she was willing to contemplate starting her own business.  That isn't something you do if living paycheck to paycheck.

I always wondered if Jesse and Joey paid rent during the original show, especially once they started doing well in their careers. But it was never mentioned, so I doubt money will be discussed here.

I really doubt anyone ever or currently pays rent, Jesse and Joey moved in for free childcare for Danny. To help him, just like Steph and Kimmy. They didn't move in because they needed places to live.

If there's no mortgage on this house, I think DJ is just paying utilities.

"Good morning. And now, good night."

"Applicant is snarky and smells like tequila."

Aw, Kimmy and Steph are business partners. Nicely done parallel to the original series and believable with Steph's creativity and Gibbler's, well, outlandishness.

The dance numbers will never get old for me. If Jodie Sweetin's gonna be on Dancing with the Stars I may have to actually watch...or check out her performances on Youtube afterward.

I don't think tv shows especially sitcoms discuss money unless money issues are a plot point but that is only with the excessively rich or excessively poor families. The Tanners seem to be doing well so I doubt money will be brought up in any real way.

I've grown increasingly bitter about Dancing With The Stars over the years, but I'd throw aside my usual disdain, because Jodie is actually someone who I think would benefit from the overall career boost, but who also I think would deserve it as well.

I was enjoying the show well enough before this one, but this is the episode where I officially fell in love with it. I legitimately laughed out loud several times--especially in the cow scene. The early kitchen scene with DJ, Stephanie and Kimmy had everything clicking on both a performance and writing level and made me think how much I'd just enjoy spending a half hour watching these actors and these characters, which is what I'm really looking for in a sitcom. I also think it helped that none of the older returning cast members appeared and distracted from the leads; I was relieved none of them showed up. To be honest, I don't care about the kids (and started just fast-forwarding through any of their scenes where the adults don't appear in the last episode), but I'm willing to put up with them for the adults.

Loved it.

I was just thinking about having her on CBS Mom now that would be good casting considering the topic of the show but maybe a little too on the nose for some. Still I like dark comedy so....

I loved when Matt was all, "Oh, I'm not a good dancer" or something and then he immediately and seamlessly leaped to into the choreography.  That John Brotherton, so charming!

I always am amused on tv shows when all the characters burst into a highly choreographed dance number on a moment's notice.  I was also a little confused as to where Stephanie actually got the cow?

Also, Baby Tommy in the turban was pretty darn cute.

I really enjoyed the Indian dance that they did. Matt is really hilarious and I'm going to be so disappointed if he isn't chosen by DJ. Maybe he deserves better, but I think DJ and Matt work well. Plus, I like whenever shows don't go back to 'first loves' and all that. And with Steve going on and on about this, it would be nice if he figured out DJ and him are good friends and he's supportive of her, instead of a dick.

The kids' storyline was alright. So, Max knows how to blackmail now? The riding in on the wagon was really funny.

Kimmy and Steph being partners is going to be hilarious, and I think it'll work well.

I think what really works about this show is the fact that the main relationship is between Kimmy, DJ and Steph. They have the kids there, but they're not the main focus. Full House had more equity with the kids and the adults, but then it focused way too much on Michelle. Hopefully, they don't lose sight of their strengths on this show.

God, even the knowledge that this episode is surely rife with offensive racial stereotypes and wholesale cultural appropriation... I am such a sucker for a choreographed dance number.

Damn you, Previously.tv, damn you all to hell!

Let's face it: the production values in this Netflix production are superb. Dancing, wrestling, location shooting, animals, you name it.

Full House was always a sitcom in the Old Comedy tradition of I Love Lucy (ie, it contained literal performances within its narratives), but I never expected Fuller House to be this performative.

I have to agree with that. The original had its moments from Hawaii to Disney World and even some shots around SF Bay during the course of the series, not just in the introductions. Being on Netflix was the best place for the relaunch, having a bit more of a budget than the original series and allowing more work with the guest stars than the original series did.

Ok. No discussion of the fact that it might not be a great idea to accept a partnership with a guy you just started kinda dating while trying to decide between him and another guy? And she said he was giving her the partnership? And his father gave it to him? Talk about tax implications. I don't expect that to be realistic on tv, but the dating thing should have been addressed.

Now that you mention it, they pretty much told us Steve would "win" by laying out *this* storyline. Oh, the conflict. Oh, the hilarity. ;)
