Survivor In The Media

Recommended Posts

I always hated the fire making challenge. It was said that if a strong player loses the final 4 immunity challenge that the other 3 players simply vote them out. That's the point. The other 3 players know that they won't win if they let them through. If the "strong player" had a better social game and convinced everyone to keep them or actually won the final 4 immunity challenge, then they would deserve to make it to the final 3.

I think it’s impossible to really rank all the seasons because so many blur together.  I could probably do top 10, but most of mine would be older seasons because they are largely what I remember.  I’m not even sure if I could do a bottom 10 anymore.  And this new era of Survivor is particularly bad for me.  I totally forgot 41 and 43 even happened (though 43 I think is partly wanting to forget).  I feel like I’ll remember 47 fondly, but I thought the same thing about 44 and 45 when they ended and yet they are a very distant memory that they might as well have happened 20 years ago.

I did get a kick out of the author ranking Thailand as dead last.  Even after all these years and so many doozies, Thailand still can’t get out of its slump as being considered one of the worst seasons to ever grace our TVs.

Same here.  I'd like to know though how these "superfans" on the show can remember pretty much every single thing and player names that have been on during past seasons.  Do they just have great memories?  Do they watch previous seasons non-stop and study them?  I have seen every episode of Survivor and can maybe name 5-10 winners off the top of my head.

Yeah, I've enjoyed some of the recent seasons as they happened, but they exit my brain immediately thereafter, whereas those earlier seasons are taking up perhaps too much space.

For me, I think I can pinpoint the Philippines season as the last of the really memorable seasons for me (although there were some duds for me before that). For the following seasons, there are moments here and there that stand out, but in terms of a whole season narrative, I think Philippines is the last one.

Don’t know about anybody else, but I’m pretty certain my available resources of functional brain matter are significantly reduced from days past - and when it comes to stuff I consider it important to retain in memory, old Survivor season cast rosters are right down there along with the precinct return numbers from the 1996 county dog catcher election.

‘Survivor 47’ Proves It’s Time To Bring Back the Fan Favorite Award
By Madalyn Carter   Jan 5, 2025
https://collider.com/survivor-fan-favorite-award/

Quote

Survivor 47 was a season full of determined, inspiring, and likable castaways. Castaways like Sam Phalen – a scrappy player working from the bottom for nearly the entire season who narrowly managed to snag a spot at Final Tribal Council following an intense fire-making showdown – or Solomon “Sol” Yi – who, as the second member of the jury, didn’t quite get the chance to show off his strategic prowess, but was lauded across social media anyway for his calm demeanor in tense situations and even his sense of style as he sported iconic outfits from the jury bench at tribal council – are well-deserved of the Fan Favorite title. And that’s just to name a few.

Boston Rob Admits He Didn't See Survivor: All-Stars 'Through the Jury's Eyes': 'I Killed Friendships' (Exclusive)
By Dana Rose Falcone   January 7, 2025
https://people.com/boston-rob-admits-he-didnt-see-survivor-all-stars-through-the-jurys-eyes-exclusive-8770724

Boston Rob Mariano knows he can be a cutthroat gamer.

“There's something for playing hard,” the Survivor alum, 49, tells PEOPLE. “Like, in Survivor: All-Stars back in 2003 in Panama, I legitimately did everything that I needed to do to get to the end. I cut throats, I killed friendships and I expected them to give it to me at the end.”

Instead, the jury gave the win to Amber Brkich, who Mariano proposed to in the All-Stars live reunion show and married in April 2005.

Today, “I stand by my gameplay,” Mariano says. “But I didn't take into account that I was going to have to be accountable at the end of it, meaning I didn't see it through the jury's eyes.”
*  *  *
Mariano says his takeaways from his aggressive All-Stars season helped him come back and win Redemption Island in 2011. “I had to learn you can't just treat all these other people just like game pieces,” he explains. “You have to understand they're people, they have feelings, and act accordingly.”

The father of four calls it “a balancing act” to figure out how to navigate preserving relationships with his castmates while also keeping his eyes on the prize. “And I think finding that balance really is the key to doing well in these reality competition games,” Mariano says.
*  *  *
Mariano ultimately feels proud of his run on Survivor, which began with Marquesas in 2004.

“I thought I did good my first time out in Marquesas,” he says. “I didn't ultimately win, but I understood the strategy better than the people did at the time. I feel like I understood the theory of it beyond what was even considered what should be done. Even taking Hunter [Ellis] out in the very first loss on Marquesas, people were like, ‘What are they doing? We shouldn't get rid of Captain America.’ In the back of my mind, I'm thinking, ‘While this guy's here, how am I supposed to win?’”

The 55-year-old is old school by nature, disliking superfans who "cheat" by practicing puzzles preseason.

Gotta agree with her that superfans don't make the game better. An occasional doofus who practices a simple puzzle at home for fun is okay, but when you have people creating full scale models of common challenges in their backyards, it's just a bit much.

Kinda makes you miss the days when people tried to hide their nerdy habits and tendencies, lol.

For who? 😄

Weird thing: I’ve been watching the show since its inception, and was initially inclined to agree with Chrissy’s assessment - but upon examination, superfans appear to do better overall than I’d originally thought:

  • Rob Cesternino: 3rd in S6 (Amazon), 15th in S8 (All-Stars)
  • Todd Herzog: won S15 (China)
  • John Cochran: 8th in S23 (South Pacific), won S26 (Caramoan)
  • Spencer Bledsoe: 4th in S28 (Cagayan), tied for 2nd in S31 (Cambodia)
  • Adam Klein: won S33 (Millennials vs. GenX), 12th in S40 (Winners At War)
  • Ryan Ulrich: 3rd in S35 (Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers)
  • Gabby Pascuzzi: 8th in S37 (David vs. Goliath)
  • Aubrey Bracco: 2nd in S32 (Kaôh Rōng)
  • Hannah Shapiro: tied for 2nd in S33 (Millennials vs. GenX)

To be sure, superfan status does not automatically translate to success in Survivor - one look at Jacob Derwin (2nd evictee of S36) is enough to demonstrate THAT - but overall they actually fare pretty well, which makes me wonder why I/we tend to rag on them more than other players.  Does their professed familiarity with the game make us predisposed to hold them to a higher standard?

Number one, as fans, we want villains back. [Laughs.] I want more villains. I love the stories, but I love the gameplay too. And I love a Tony or a Russell or a Coach or a Brandon. Iconic moments, like when the girl dumped the rice everywhere. We want a little bit of that back. I think, you know. That's my hot take on Survivor. But, truly, I'm probably gonna get totally like, slayed for this. But I think Russell was one of the best players there was, and he should have won. I would have voted for him personally,

Chrissy

Quote

I don't know if it was last season or the season before. The two people that quit, I was disgusted. Knowing the process that we have to do to get here. You never watched the show?! You didn't think you were going to be uncomfortable?! To be like, "I miss my bed. I want to go home." To me, that was just terrible.

David

Quote

So again, I haven't watched a lot of Survivor. But the last season I was watching was Heroes vs. Villains. I would love some of those one-on-one brutal challenges, man.

Eva

Quote

I think that you should not be allowed to ask what someone's gonna do with the money in the final Tribal Council. I think that that should have no indication of how someone played. The rules are to outwit, outplay, and outlast, and that's what the jury should be making their decision based on. Not on who needs the money the most, or who do you think is going to use it the best? No, it should be based on your gameplay, not outside factors.

Mary

Quote

My hot take is that Applebee's isn't that great. I mean, I can't say I've ever eaten there. But I've heard from friends that have eaten there and gotten sick. And I'm sure I'll love it, because it'll be food. When they're like, "It's Applebee's!" I'm gonna be like, "Okay, translate: It's food." It's sustenance for me. My family and I, we didn't really have the money to go out and eat. So I can't really say that I'm that familiar with that many restaurants, because I just didn't go out to eat that much.

Stephanie

Quote

I mean, I think all advantages at this point are disadvantages.

And of those who don't care for B-Rob, Kamilla and Mitch think he's overrated and got lucky in his win.

So who will be rewarded with podcasting glory for the Survivor 48 season, which premieres Feb. 26 on CBS? It turns out that Survivor 47 winner Rachel LaMont will be grabbing the mic the same way she grabbed that cool $1 million just a few months ago, and we've got your exclusive first listen below. This means Rachel will have denied Rome Cooney — who openly campaigned for the job while on the show — for a second time.

"The podcast is back," Probst tells Entertainment Weekly. "We're very excited. The winner of Survivor 47, Rachel LaMont, is the cohost."

Was there a long and involved selection process to get down to the final pick? It turns out the answer to that question is… no! "I got to be honest," Probst says, "although there were a lot of people from 47 that would've been fun — including Rome, who desperately wanted to do it — for us it was a pretty easy decision. Rachel was such a dominant player in so many different ways, and such a good talker. When we called her and told her the news, we could have recorded the first podcast right then. She's ready."

Per Survivor’s latest post on IG, S50 will be in the hands of the fans.  While S48 is airing (which Jeff says is a very good season) there will be times where fans can be told where to vote on key elements for S50.

I know back a couple of months or so ago they had a poll that they were conducting about what fans liked/disliked or wanted to see changed or added to the show.

ETA: and here are the first 4 things fans will be voting on apparently

Tribe colors, rice and final 4 fire making (yes/no), and live reunion show or after show in Fiji

There's no way they're going to let us decide those things.  The other two, possibly.  But not getting rid of F4 fire and the return of a live reunion.

Jeff said it in an interview with Mike Bloom (there’s a screenshot of the video there in the Reddit link, the video clip itself is on Mike’s Twitter).  He mentioned those 4 things as being up for a vote and that there will be other things involving twists, idols, etc.  He did say that none of the players will know until the time comes what’s going to happen (so if I understood him right they won’t know until the final 4 if fire making is still happening or not).  I’m more surprised a live reunion would be on the table, as I figured that was a CBS decision and budget wasn’t there for it anymore.

It’s also mentioned in this article:

https://parade.com/tv/survivor-50-in-the-hands-of-the-fans-voting-twists-advantages-fiji-trip

Quote

On paper, one would think the "key elements" offered would be minute, like tribe colors or whether certain fan-favorite challenges would return. But the examples given in the press release from CBS indicate major structural elements are, for lack of a better term, "up for grabs." Fans can choose between “Idols or No Idols,” electing whether or not the season should remove the game-changing totems from the fray. Another decision, “Final Four Fire Making: Keep It or Lose It,” puts the change-up in the game's penultimate round in the quite literal line of fire. And “Live Finale and Reunion Show in L.A. – or Keep the Winner Reveal and Aftershow in the Jungles of Fiji" addresses whether the conclusion of the season should happen months later off-island, like it did from Seasons 2 through 40, or on-island, which became a permanent change in the show's "new era."

I know he said those things were "up for a vote".  But I have very little confidence that TPTB will actually abide by the majority decision on those two things (and others) if it doesn't match with what they plan to do anyway.  Relatively unimportant things like tribe colors, fine.  Cast members like for Second Chances, ok (and even that was a bit of a stretch).  But not live gameplay elements like the F4 fire or something they'd have to spend more money on like a live reunion.

I mainly think this because they aren't planning on revealing the results of the polls until during S50 filming.  There's not going to be any "instant feedback" to see which way the polls are trending.  All we the voting public will get will be the "results", and we'll have to wait until next year to find those out.

Don't get me wrong; I'm still planning on participating in the voting, even in the categories I anticipate will not really be chosen by us.  Because I could very well be wrong and TPTB may surprise me.  But I'll be wearing my cynic buff while casting my votes.

I could see where they are ready to do away with or modify the final 4 firemaking.  It’s been around since S35 and not sure it entirely serves its purpose anymore.  And for the most part, it’s largely uneventful (last season being a true exception).  So I could buy they want to do away with it and are counting on fans to be the reason.  I could see a case where they keep it and just change the rules, and whoever wins immunity doesn’t pick someone to take with them to the end and pick who goes to fire.  It’d just be the 3 losers that do it.

I do think if there is a live reunion show it’ll be a one-time thing to celebrate the 50th with returning players, and they’ll go back to after shows starting in 51.

This I can agree with.  CBS may give them the budget to do a live reunion again this one time.  But it'd most likely just be for this one time.  Maybe again for S75 and S100....

S25's Lisa Whelchel hosts Collector's Call, and this week they had a woman who inherited her dad's Survivor memorabilia collection. Ethan Zohn was on as the expert who estimated the value because he had known her dad and they worked together to auction some of the items for Grassroots Soccer, but I got the feeling Ethan was just on for being recognizable and someone else was doing the actual estimates because he kept saying, "we value this at ..."

I was amazed at how high the values were. S2 Elisabeth Filarski's torch at $40,000. The S1 immunity necklace was $175,000, and the S1 voting urn containing all the votes for both Rich and Kelly at $500,000. Overall, her collection was valued at $2.5 million, but she really didn't have very many things. She said that her dad had sold about 90% of the collection before his death with a lot of the money going to charity, and you could see just a few items laid out behind the three of them. Ordinarily on the show, people have entire rooms or garages filled with stuff.

At the end of every episode, the expert offers to trade an item they own for something in the collection. Ethan had brought a Grassroots Soccer t-shirt that was autographed by everyone in the cast of Winners at War, and he wanted to trade it for his torch from his winning Africa season. I thought she would go for it because she said WaW was the last season she and her dad watched together, and other than that she didn't seem to care that much about the collection and said she was whittling it down. For some reason, she turned him down but instead gave him a gift of the two carved stools that he and Kim had sat on during FTC.

Anyway if you ever bought any authentic items from a Survivor charity auction, you might have lucked into something, especially if it belonged to an iconic player.

Jeff Probst Reveals 'Survivor 48' Will Feature Never-Before-Seen Moments That 'Transcend the Show' (Exclusive)

Something I picked up on while talking with this cast is that Survivor 48 might be the physically strongest cast in the "new era." Between David, Joe, Eva, Chrissy, Charity, Mitch, and many others, it's something that even some of the cast members were picking up in the preseason. Was there an intention in assembling this particular cast?
Total coincidence. Honestly, until you said that, it didn't even occur to me, and now I see it very clearly. And Mike, I think your question led to a different answer, which is this illustrates how we cast Survivor today. I often don't know what state people are from. I don't care. I'm only interested in who is the person in front of me. What is their life about? And that could be as simple as birth order and how it impacted my relationship with my brothers. It could be that "my parents immigrated here from another country, and I have a lot to prove". It doesn't matter. We just want to know your story.

So, to your point, I didn't even notice this was a physical cast. Would not impact the challenges at all because the challenges were built way before. I mean, as you know, we don't even have a cast for 49. But we have people on the ground building already. So we already know what the challenges are, and we don't even know who's going to be on the show. So I don't look at those things. And I think our casting, I don't see any show on in this genre that's anywhere close to us in the types of people that we're putting on the show, the dimensions and the layers and the humanity and the vulnerability. And if there is another one, then maybe I'm just not watching. I think our casting team is, capital letters, Extraordinary.

The players of Season 48 had just watched the entirety of Season 46. And, when I talked with the contestants in the preseason, there was plenty of that on the brain, with talk about the string of idols not being used, number one allies turning on each other, and Maria not voting for Charlie in the jury vote. Did you find elements of 46 manifesting in 48?
Every season of Survivor impacts the next season. Because the game is evolving always. And in 46 the predominant story was idols not being played, episode after episode after episode, player after player after player. That's what I noticed at Tribal Council. There was a very different feeling, which was, "It's more likely that I will play my idol than I won't. Because what I saw in Survivor 46 was it's a foolish mistake to have the power and not use it." Obviously, that the big caveat is, if I truly believe I'm safe, then you got me. But I think that's going to impact the game for a while. And in terms of players betraying each other or juries and who they vote for, I think that's a little more season-specific because it's all contextual. So when you're out there, and you have a great partnership like Charlie and Maria, both players know it's coming. At some point, the betrayal has to happen. They handled it their way. Maria reacted the way she did. But I don't think you can take that example and then, therefore, say, "I'm not going to have a partnership," or "My partnership is going to be different." Because you don't know who your partnership or your alliance is going to be with.

Survivor’s Jeff Probst Weighs In on That Major Season 49 Casting Rumor

“Somebody else put it in the air that Dierks Bentley was going to be on the show,” Probst tells TVLine in the video embedded above. “That’s not the case. We did reach out to him. We said, ‘Man, we’d love to talk to you if you’re interested,’ and he said, ‘Maybe one day.’ I genuinely think he meant it, but he said not right now.”

“I’m open to celebrities being on the show, provided they’re good for the show,” he adds. “We live and breathe with the people we put on the show. There are famous people that have gotten my number and texted me and said, ‘I want to be on,’ and I’m like, ‘You’re just not right for us, man.’ It’s not stunt casting. Like Mike White, arguably the best storyteller we’ve ever had on the show. He was fantastic. Some people say he could’ve won had he pressed the gas pedal a little more at the end. We didn’t put him on because he’s Mike White. We put him on because he’s super interesting, so that’s the barometer for that.”

The $1 Million ‘Survivor’ Prize Has Never Been Worth Less
By James Hibberd   February 26, 2025

When CBS launched Survivor in 2000, the competition series’ $1 million prize seemed like an unfathomable amount of money. The payout equaled the highest possible prize on ABC’s quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which launched a year earlier. The following year, CBS debuted another competition series, The Amazing Race, which likewise offered a $1 million prize.

Want to know the value of $1 million compared to back then? That prize today is worth $534,850 in 2000’s buying power, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Asked about the Survivor’s prize shrinking buying power, a source close to the show replied, “$1 million is still a lot of money — more than many other shows offer — for what is a lifetime opportunity for those fortunate to participate. The money isn’t the only motivating factor — the life experience and personal growth is a big driving force for those who audition.”

Which is true enough, and Survivor — which returns for its 48th season tonight — remains a ratings titan as it approaches its 50th season (averaging 8 million viewers and ranking as the top non-sports primetime program in the adult demo). The program actually once tried offering a $2 million purse for 2020’s Survivor: Winners at War, so it’s not like CBS has never experimented with boosting its payout.

Yet all this focus on reality TV cash actually ignores the larger benefit of appearing on such shows. Unlike when Survivor and Amazing Race launched, an entire economic ecosystem has been established that allows reality stars to grow their brands after their appearance.

“The coveted commodity on most reality shows is not only the prize but the media exposure,” said June Deery, Professor of Communication & Media at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. “Even if participants aren’t catapulted into A-list celebrityhood, the attention capital they accumulate on TV can be monetized online — from pitching sponsors or regular YouTube ads.”

So do you really want to know what you’re playing for? It’s clout, not cash.
