Luke Cage - General Discussion

Considering I left underwhelmed last season thanks to the Diamondback arc, I thought this was a fun return.  I like that Luke is going through a similar situation like Jessica Jones where his identity isn't a secret, so he has to deal with that, only his fame is ten times bigger, since he's basically the hero for an entire neighborhood, wherever he likes it or not.  I can see that being an issue with his crime-fighting.  I really wouldn't be surprised if stuff like the vlogger or him always being tracked by social media could come back to hurt him.

So, I'm getting the sense that Mariah's plan now is to go legit and sell off the club, but Shades seems to be against it.  Hmm...

Nice to see that Misty missing an arm isn't going to stop her from going after the cons who are now back on the streets, thanks to her corrupt former partner.

Oh, Luke!  I understand your concerns, but you should know that Claire isn't going to remain on the sidelines (well, she might, depending on how many episodes they've got Rosario Dawson under contract for!)

Had no idea Reg E. Cathey was going to be here and Luke's father no less.  Sad that this is probably going to be his last performance, so I hope it is a good one.

Glad Bobby is still around.

So, the new villain for this season is going to be the Bushmaster dude (played by Big Mike from The Deuce!), who seems to be bulletproof as well, although his fighting style is more fluent and quick then Luke's "Just beat the shit out of them, while looking annoyed" style.  Lets see where this goes!

Yeah, Luke's definitely beginning to realize that maybe his issues with his dad are a lot bigger then he wants him to be.  Granted, Cockroach is the worst, but almost killing him in front of his son is getting into overkill territory.  At least drag him out of the apartment, Luke!

Granted, it looks like this season might be all about family issues, since Mariah is now reconnecting with her daughter, in order to try and boost her credibility.  And Shades ain't happy about it!

I suspect Misty will make all of those doubters (and her smug former classmate) regret underestimating her!

Yes, he actually has a fighting style. Luke has none, he simply uses his strength and impenetrable skin to pummel his opposition into submission. They had to give Luke a powered foe, or it was going to get old quick. And I love that he's actually after Mariah and Luke's just in the way.

Ah, so it looks like the way they're going to get Rosario Dawson off screen for a bit (since she usually only does about six episodes) is by having her want space from Luke since he's clearly becoming more angry and aggressive now.  I do believe him in that he'll never harm her, but he clearly has some issues.  Not including the fact that he just got laid the hell out by the Bushmaster.  Uh oh!

Glad to see Colleen again, and her team-up with Misty.  Now, there's a spin-off that needs to happen.  Although, really, Colleen, there are several good reasons why someone would refuse to answer Danny's phone calls!

I have a bad feeling Mariah's daughter is not going to come out of this well, when it is all said and done.

Well, this was all around a bad episode for Luke!  Bushmaster whoops his ass in front of an audience (and it goes viral, of course.)  Claire flat-out leaves town.  Bobby does too, although at least in his case it wasn't because of anything Luke did, but his daughter needs help.  And then the episode ends with him getting served!  Ouch.

That said, they're totally testing the waters for a potential hook-up between him and Tilda, right?  Part of me thinks that would be a dick move for him to move on that quickly from Claire, but another part would love it just to see Mariah's reaction.

Looks like Misty getting her robotic arm is getting ready to happened, thanks to Danny and Colleen.  But you know that Colleen was the one who wrote that note, because no way would Danny not have signed it with "Danny Rand, Immortal Iron Fist, Protector of K'un-Lun, Sworn Enemy of the Hand!"

The only thing that was missing was Chris Tucker standing over him and saying, "You got knocked the fuck out!"

Was it explained in season one that Luke can't be killed by poison? Because that what my head keeps screaming out every time he boast about his invincibility. He does eat and drink, doesn't he? Even a "sealed" bottle of water or anything else can be tampered with, and while all of these macho guys who are after him might think poison is beneath them, I wouldn't put it past Mariah.

Mariah is one cold, wicked woman. The scene with her and Mathilda was good.

The father and his Titanic references crack me up.

Of course! Bushmaster is transported with no police escorts.

I hope Nandi got her 3 million upfront.

Foggy!

So begins Luke dipping his toe into the "heroes for hire" concept.  Considering how slimy Piranha is, he totally deserves double his fee!

I'm guessing Bushmaster is responsible for those severed heads inside Mariah's brand new clinic.  Worst interior director ever!

Enjoyed seeing more of the relationship between Misty and Scarfe back in the day.  And she's now got that robotic arm!

Mariah took her evilness to another level.

Why is Shades acting surprise? He couldn't tell she was mental from the start?!!!

Nandi couldn't plan her escape any better or at least show up to work for a month and quit?

I though there is no touching in any way during prison visits?

Tilda took her sweet time taking the poison of her lips, I got the impression she wanted to die too.

Within a few minutes we hear Mariah's plan for Luke to be consumed by club which will lead to his downfall, then we hear Luke's intention to burn down club (figuring he's too smart for the temptation), and then we see the club in full operation with crime bosses as VIP. Disappointed with Luke!

Was that Mariah's plan to tell Tilda the club is her's and instead give it to Luke to make her evil?

So anyone who is shown under Biggie's crown ends up dead. I believe Luke was shown under it.

I think Carbone's condo/town house was the one used in Mr. Robot (Season 2)

Carbone offered Luke "coffee" and he turned it down.  She didn't look bad Luke.

The season wasn't terrible, I felt there was unfinished business between Luke and Bushmaster.

I didn't know Reg E. Cathey had died. RIP!

Also, in Season 1 of Jessica Jones, after she shoots him in the head and he's unconscious, Claire injects a needle in his eyeball to relieve pressure from the fluid in his head. Bushmaster had that completely insane/gross knife move through the eyeballs in his first big fight. Luke Cage is definitely not invincible. You'd have to get close to him, but it could happen.

Luke Cage and the Bushmaster have a showdown on a bridge and it ends with Bushmaster cheating?  What a surprise!  And, of course, no way is Luke going to drown, but that is some effective magic dust Bushy had his pockets.  I doubt that will be the last we will see of that.

So, now Misty has turned in her gun and badge.  Going full vigilante, now?

I do like that even in death, Cornell/Cottonmouth's presence is felt.

Ah, Bushmaster!  You've fallen for the classic trap: not making sure your victim is actually dead before leaving!  To be fair, I guess he never would have predicted that Luke Cage of all people, would actually go into a burning building to save Mariah.

Should have known that Misty chewing out the captain was going to mean he would get killed, and she would feel guilt over what she said.

Reg E. Cathey is just owning it and makes me even more sad that he is no longer with us.

The comics have shown Luke being susceptible to various degrees, but he has had a high tolerance for poison, but he still needs air to breath, light to see, ect. There was a story line where a villain from the future came to wipe out various super heroes. He killed Luke by trapping him in a heat bubble that dehydrated and then suffocated him. The Vision used his intalibility once to phase through him and knock him unconscious from the inside since that is not "unbreakable".

We'll get to see him one last time in Outcast.

I'm glad they popped the Comanche blister, I didn't want to wonder every ep when Shades was going to figure it out.

I think Luke's storyline this season is to show that while he is pretty indestructible, he's not invincible or immortal. He's ego's gotten a little too big, he will be knocked down.

What is with Misty's police department, the woman lost an arm and they are making fun of her? I wouldn't blame for her leaving and joining the vigilantes. They know what she did for them and appreciate her for it.

This show is still not pulling me in like Jessica Jones and Daredevil. I only thought the first season was okay. It was better than Iron Fist but that is not saying much.

Aw,man!  I was hoping to see a yellow shirt and metal headband in that box Piranha Jones' receptionist handed Luke to wear.  Yellow seems to be Luke's signature color, from the lining on his hoodies to the yellow tie he wore at the lawyers' meeting.

Bodyguard/security work would seem a natural fit for Cage given his abilities and certainly less demeaning than what Piranha had him doing.

Colleen and Misty, where's the Daughter of the Dragon show? I'd rather watch that than another season of Iron Fist.  Colleen was a teacher so I liked her not being easy on Misty just because she lost an arm. She knows what Misty is capable of, she saved her and Claire.

I too have a feeling that Mariah's daughter is going to get the short end of the stick. She seems like a good person that got away from her families life of crime.

Is Claire's mom paying the rent on the apartment for them? None of them have jobs that are paying them. I don't blame Claire for leaving, Luke is dangerous when he's angry even if he won't hurt her, he will hurt someone else. I think it would be hard for him and Jessica to have think about controlling their strength all the time. They can lift cars and throw truck tires with no effort. Just squeezing a little more during a handshake could crush someone's hand.

Sounds like the more Bushmaster takes whatever the potion is to make him stronger, the more humanity he loses.  Well, this is going to end well!  Especially if Shades is planning on going after those Bushmaster cares for.

Luke, Misty, Mariah, Tilda, Misty's fellow cop, and Luke's dad on the run should make for an interesting group.  And might we see Danny next episode?!

I think this is my favorite episode so far this season, there were a lot of good character moments.

I didn't even suspect Shades and Comanche were lovers!  I felt bad for Comanche when Shades just dismissed what was between them in prison.

It was also good to see Bushmaster's uncle call him out on his brutality and how that could impact other Jamaican-Americans.
I'm worried about the uncle now, since Mariah knows the Bushmaster's main hangout.

In a way, I kind of feel bad for Shades since it looks like Mariah doesn't love him.  He really should just leave, and worry about his own wellbeing.

Claire is great at stepping in where it's not her place. It's really none of her business whether or not Luke forgives his father and her pressing it so much was so uncalled for. I love Rosario Dawson but Claire is too much with this.

I love Misty and Colleen together.

IIRC, there is a scene in season 1 where a bunch of the villains were talking about how they can't hurt Luke, and Mariah says something like, "You can drown him!" So it's definitely on her mind.
