It seems to me too they put the "love of my life" line in the script for her..MG wasn't even thinking about them in those terms until she went to him and said she still thought that about O/L. They said O/L as a romantic relationship was done for them in S2. I don't even see how they could have put it in the script and not make it cringeworthy. If she focused on Laurel as an independent, strong woman and let go of the romantic relationship idea it would have probably been better for the character..but everyone has different priorities.

He already told her that l/O weren't getting back together so why care about entertaining it when killing her off? She's allowed to think what she wants but she doesn't write the script so for me the blame lays solely on the writers  for that horrid death.

I still wish they would've had Laurel be delirious, looking at Oliver but hallucinating that he was Tommy. Wouldve been sooooo much better instead of having her declare her love and have to prop up Olicity all at the same time.

Katie still played her scene with Stephen as if Laurel was still in love with Oliver in s4. It was especially weird in s4 premiere as we saw Oliver with the ring and Laurel trying some weird eye contact thingy. So it was clear KC disregarded anything the EPs told her.

That made me realize that I'd like to see the script for 414 when Felicity was reminiscing about the first time she and Oliver met and KC just awkwardly rushed through her next line. I remember finding the way Laurel walked off right in front of Oliver weird.

In 223 (Unthinkable) as aired, Oliver & Felicity have this conversation after Quentin tells Oliver he needs to get back in the habit of killing because Slade and his men are monsters that need to be destroyed:

Felicity: “He's wrong.”
Oliver: “He's right. I've lost everything because I'm fighting Slade Wilson with one hand tied behind my back. The man murdered my mother. I have to kill him.”
Felicity: “You told me you had a choice. That years ago, you could have cured Slade but you chose to kill him instead. This isn't happening because you're not willing to be a killer; it's happening because you were one.
Oliver: “You're right. That's how this started. It's how it has to end. The only move that he has left for me is to kill him. I can't cure him, I can't capture him, I can't even out-think him!”
Felicity: “Then don't. Just - make him outthink you.”

However, in the 223 script, Oliver's response is a little different (says he wants to break Slade's "damn neck". as opposed to aired line that he has to kill him). Also, the direction refers to a "flash of the killer inside of Oliver" (interesting in light of S5).
C99-9CdUwAAKMt-.jpg

Also, in the aired 223 episode, that scene ends with Felicity's line to "make him outthink you." But in the script, it ends with additional dialogue - Oliver tells Felicity they need to go and, when she asks where, he answers "Home."
C99-9CzUAAAHlgR.jpg

And, of course, the most famous deviation from the 223 script is the Queen mansion scene. The script includes Oliver kissing Felicity and also includes some Oliver dialogue about Sara telling him that he deserves someone who can harness the light inside him, both of which were deleted from the aired episode. The script also refers to "this seminal moment in the life of our series."
C9999a9VYAExoZB.jpg

And, in 223, when Felicity jabs the needle into Slade's neck, the script makes it clear that what was unthinkable was risking Felicity. The script direction also describes Laurel delivering "the HAYMAKER of all haymakers," followed up by a "ROUNDHOUSE KICK" to the soldier holding her (I remember the punch, but I don't remember the kick).
C99_UkkUAAAqohw.jpg

Finally for 223, in the ending Lian Yu beach scene, the script describes an "awkward beat" and neither Oliver nor Felicity knowing what to say next.
C99_UkXU0AAxWdZ.jpg

(to be continued)

Thanks so much for posting the break down of the changes.  My computer does this weird thing where when I click on the individual image on Twitter, it scales down so I can't read it.

I LOVE That we got confirmation that Sara's line about him finding someone to harness the light inside of him was about Felicity.  I always swore in the scene that Sara looked toward Felicity but I couldn't prove it was on purpose or not.  :D

MG rejected her feelings on O/L so even in killing her off, giving into those thoughts wouldn't make sense. I think they just weren't that interested in showing that side of the character. They seem to cut plenty of scenes that help make sense for the character.

I remember when the Laurel fans hounded Marc on tumblr about why he cut the airport scene between Oliver and Laurel in 3x20 and he did kindest thing he could by lying to them about some silly reason like It would have taken up to much screen time to say goodbye to Laurel or some such nonsense. And Laurel fans were understandably upset and rather vocal about it. But then the scene was released online and it was the most terribly wooden lacking emotion and just bad acting from both .Katie AND Stephen. The whole scene sucked beyond the telling of it (thanks Buffy).

So myself personally I cut the writers some slack. The choice not to air scenes I don't think is a personal slight against the characters. Sometimes scenes that look good on paper just really don't work out on screen. Or maybe there are good scenes cut because they either are repetitive to another scene or take away or lessen the impact of another scene or don't work into the flow of an episode or sometimes have to be cut for time. That's why there are editors.

Infact I remember reading reading a quote from some director or producer that a films success relies on 20% writing 20% directing 20% acting and 40% editing. Basically saying that an editor can make or break OR save a film.

I mean at that point - only Katie was talking about how Oliver was the love of Laurel's life... So if you're looking for a reason - I'd say that it's pretty clear based on what we heard from Katie *shrugs*. Clearly she didn't know what was best for her character.

Anyways - I don't care much to discuss about LL anymore. Maybe the writers will do Black Siren justice and not listen to Katie and her ridiculous head canons anymore just to appease her.

Yikes.  They might as well have filmed at different times, their takes on the scene were so not in sync.  Oliver is slow and sad and somber and Laurel sounds like she's on a caffeine high.   And the expressionless face and the darting eyes.  In retrospect, Slade's reveal to her that Oliver was the Arrow was a masterclass.  Yikes.

Still doesn't explain entertaining her. Giving her that moment did either side any good.

Well, I mean it's pretty clear to me but YMMV. It didn't do the characters or the writers any good (especially MG because it's explicitly clear he never though OQ was the love of LL's life) but it serviced Katie because that's the headcanon she wanted - as well as how she got to be a LI for at least one last time. No one in this process benefited except for Katie as an actress. She got what she wanted, it was explicitly shown on the show that Oliver was always the love of Laurel's life.

Why entertain her though? Well, I could tell you why I think so, but you probably won't accept it as a reason so I think it's best to just leave it lol

  • Love 3

Why entertain her? Why even hire her back after working so hard to get rid of her and after all the problems she's created for this show? Everything they've done with this character and this actress defies logical explanation. But this might be more suited for the Bitterness thread so I'm gonna stop here.

During the long cut from LL to the plane, I thought she might make a run for it.

Laurel is like Gollum in Lord of the Rings if  when it comes to inserting herself in Olivers life and the team so her making a run for the plane wouldn't have surprised me.

Ignoring the acting, so much doesn't work here. Oliver lying to her again. Laurel not questioning nor seemingly caring about Thea.

I'm thinking they figured they needed a scene explaining why Laurel wasn't going with the others. They wrote this quick and then realized keeping it would be worst then not explaining at all.

I think after watching season 4 it makes sense why he lied to her. He knows she's impulsive and doesn't think shit through - and not only that he didn't even know if it would work. But yeah - it's good he kept the whole Lazarus Pit from her.

Kind of goes to show Oliver never really trusted nor believed in Laurel to do the right thing too much. Not only that, but he never saw her as his equal even though she basically threw a temper tantrum into forcing him to think that she is in 405 LOL

The whole lying thing again at that point in time was so stupid. If they actually thought about it, they could've found a decent way to keep Laurel in Star City despite her knowing why they were leaving.

I wonder if lying to her was on purpose because they had already decided that next season Laurel was going to discover that the Lazurus Pits existed and go dig up Sara.  So they had to keep her in the dark at that point (320) or explain the plot hole of why she waited so long to go grave robbing.

Entertaining her makes sense because they were killing LL off. Whatever she said in her last scene wasn't going to have repercussions since she wasn't coming back so why not giving an actress what she kept insisting on? The love confession makes her look pathetic in our opinion, it doesn't mean she and MG thought the same.

EBR is a dead ringer for Amanda Schull in some shots I've seen. She looks nothing like her as Felicity but this one I thought was very similar.B9hKNWAIIAE852N.jpg

There was another photo floating around on Twiter where I was convinced the person used the wrong picture and it was Amanda Schull not EBR.

All I got from these two posts, @Mellowyellow and @tv echo, is that EBR would be perfect for a Center Stage remake! How's her hip hop ballet?

The husband and I were in our late teens when Centre Stage was realased. We loved teeny romantic movies and for some reason we thought CS was a normal teen movie.

Went in, tried to watch it and we were both like "OMG why do they keep dancing? Do you know why they keep dancing???? Why can't they just be normal and stop dancing!!!"

A few years later we grew to appreciate dance and realised it was a dance movie! We did enjoy it eventually!

Huh, this is interesting. If a strike happens, guild members would be prevented from attending the MTV Awards, which means SA wouldn't be able to go to the first major award show he's nominated at. (I have no idea if he was planning to attend either way.) http://deadline.com/2017/04/mtv-movie-tv-awards-wga-strike-2017-1202076719/

Amell wouldn't be prevented from attending unless he's a WGA member (which I don't think he is) but he likely wouldn't attend anyway because SAG-AFTRA members align themselves with WGA and, as a result, most won't cross picket lines. I'd be shocked if the show happens at all in the event of a strike because so many famous faces wouldn't show up out of solidarity. That's what happened with the Golden Globes last time.

I think the actors guild would prevent them from going. From the article I linked to: "A possible writers strike would likely prevent the nominees — film and TV actors who are overwhelmingly members of SAG-AFTRA — from attending." And Vanity Fair said: "It’s not just the awards show’s writers who could be impacted—acting nominees who are SAG-AFTRA members would not be able to attend."

Last time I remember some shows would film until they ran out of scripts, unless the cast refused to out of solitary. Glad there's no question this tie.

I’ll be honest… I’m not wild about either line of dialogue, iconic or not.  Sorry.

The show is already giving Dinah enough lame tough-girl lines. Good to know they could be worse, I guess.

Yikes, I really hope they keep those clunky lines in the discard pile. Tinah is already basically just a living action figure with bonus sound fx and real life tough-grrrrl accessories that they just pose as needed. They're not giving the actress much to work with.

Hi Marc, I have a production question. Aside from the challenge of securing locations and their availability, how do you decide what order to film scenes in a given episode over 8 days?

It’s a bit of a puzzle.  Or three-dimensional chess.  The schedule is developed by our talented 1st AD’s Mark Bunting and Ken Shane and is the result of a variety of factors including locations, proximity of locations to each other and actor availability.

thesunnystar asked:
Hi! recently i rewatched episode 2x20 and i was thinking that is Oliver ever going to get a proper treatment for his knee?!

I think he did it in-between seasons 2 and 3.

Marc, Pt1-First Of all......love, love, love the sizzle reel. The one thing that bothers & it's nothing to do with the show directly it's about the paparazzi guys that drop spoilers of cast sightings & spoilers of dialogue of scenes from scripts of episodes not even aired yet. Not to mention a guy on Reddit that somehow gets the actual script & writes up a summary verbatim. The one concern is if what he says doesn't appeal to fans they don't watch which can most definitely affect the show

Straight up:  I hate those m*therf*ck*rs.  They’re shitting on you guys and they’re shitting on the hard work of all the actors and crewmembers who put up with the cold and wet and rain of Vancouver until the wee hours of the night.  We do absolutely everything within our power to stop them.

Thank you for not giving in to the vocal minority going forward, no matter how much they yell. Know that yesterday, when the sizzle reel dropped, the real fans of the show were nothing but happy and excited A few casual viewers that I know were very happy to see Olicity in it and looking forward to playing catch up to see these episodes. Keep up the good work. ??

Thank you!  We will try!

sambuccashotsandshoes asked:
Genuine question but why the obsession with Olicity/Felicity? Olicity isn't liked by the majority and Felicity went from being a loveable character to DCTVs most hated thanks to Olicity.

I get a lot of tweets and posts and whatnot from people who talk about “the majority” of viewers or whatnot.  I work on the show and I don’t have access to that kind of market research.

amagnificentpersonabouquet asked:
Hey Marc! Im an avid reddit user at arrow and I can safely say that we now love you more than ever. You have successfully managed to please both fanbases (the arrow redditors that want a dark gritty sueprshow) and the tween/teen fangirls that want a drama show. I love the fight scenes at arrow and the dark tone and it seems that the oliciter fan base loves how the bits and pieces of olicity teases. Heck, just add oliver looking into felicity's eyes and they will be pleased. Great job on the show

I’ll take it!  Thanks so much!

sambuccashotsandshoes asked:
With #NoLaurelNoArrow being a popular thing in the Arrow fandom, can you honestly say that it had no absolute influence on your decision to bring back Katie Cassidy where she rightfully belongs?

I can honestly say that, yes.

namkeen asked:
I'd like to ask this respectfully: do you/Arrow writers/other EPs consider fans who are "shippers" less than those who watch Arrow for action? The reason I'm asking is there have been some comments this season that could be interpreted as perhaps snarky/dismissive. I do agree with your point re: ratings used in arguments- they can be twisted to support essentially any POV. Personally I consider myself a shipper but I also enjoy comics, Prometheus, Black Siren, stunts. Just not Susan sorry ?

Thanks for your post.
I can only speak for myself.
I consider all fans equal.  I’m equally grateful to each and every viewer who watches the show.
That said – and take this how you will – I am writing for people who watch television – ANY television – in order to be entertained.  Those people are my target audience as a writer.  Put another way, I write for people who like to watch television the way I like to watch it.
That being said, I fully understand and respect that not everyone watches TV for the same reasons.  Some people are watching primarily to see a specific couple get together.  Other people are watching to nitpick what they consider logic issues – kind of a game of “gotcha.”  Others are pure hate-watching.  Still others are watching for reasons I haven’t enumerated here.
I’m grateful for every single viewer.  Regardless of their reason or attention, their viewership is a blessing.
I hope I’ve answered your question.

epichawk asked:
Hey, so I don't know if you've heard, but some hardcore Olicity/OTA fans have started a "campaign" to spam good things about Felicity on r/arrow and Facebook/Twitter in order for you guys to add her more onto the story. I personally find it ridiculous, because she's just a fictional character. They mostly use a lot of bots, however. Just wanted to tell you. BTW, loving Arrow S5. Continue the great work! (Also, boxing glove arrow or grappling arrow?)

First, thanks.
Second, I swear to you, we don’t make story decisions based on the internet.  I think we’ve shown than time and time and time again, but in case there’s any doubt, all the work put into bots or spam of any stripe are wasted on us.

alybax asked:
I've missed this. I've seriously missed being excited about Arrow. It's my favorite and it was making me sad loyally watching every week, thinking about all the fun times we used to have. BUT tonight! In the words of Celine Dion "it's all coming back to me now!" The spark came back! This was awesome. The lady who wrote this did an amazing job. She's never written an episode before but she made it feel like home! Stephen & Emily have such great chemistry. Let's see more of that! Great job!

So glad you liked!  Thanks for watching!

littledoyaknow asked:
how does a potential writers strike impact the next season of arrow?

It would delay it until the strike was over, unfortunately.

fight--for--now asked:
Hey Marc, so is there anything us fans can do to help prevent this strike from happening?

That’s a great question.  Thank you for asking it.  By that I mean, you’re very kind to ask.
First, I don’t believe in my heart of hearts that there is going to be a strike.  What the WGA is asking for is SO MINUSCULE compared to the studios’ profits that a strike doesn’t make sense for either side.  (Compare this to the ‘07 strike where I believe both sides wanted a strike, albeit for different reasons.)
That said, I don’t think there’s anything fans can do to prevent a strike if, in fact, that’s what’s going to happen.  There’s nothing I can do to prevent one at this point.  At this point, everything is in the hands of the negotiators for both sides. I trust in all of them – WGA and AMPTP alike – to do the right thing and arrive at the correct result.

Its this psychology thing they are doing in which they are basically trying to paint the whole olicity fandom in a negative way in order to invalidate the olicity fans' opinions("they are just tumblr teenagers") and make themselves seem superior(calling themselves loyal fans who want a good story).

So  this poster basically tries to "warn" MG ,letting him know that vast majority of the internet positivity surounding olicity or OTA next week is gonna be fake numbers, aka telling him that people dont really like olicity and most people agree with the poster's opinions. Its like telling him to not go back to writing for olicity just because a bunch of "bots" will celebrate one episode. Hilarious coming from reddit users who  spent energy and time making fake olicity accounts in order to troll around and pretend to  hate specific characters and real people, just to prove how awful we all are. Crazy.

Every time these idiots whine about shippers they turn around and fangirl over their comic canon ship. Everytime they whine about bots, they turn around and spend hours spamming every post with countless of pro-Laurel anti- Felicity comments. Everytime they call olicity fans a vocal minority they turn around and try to trend for their basic fave with actual twitter bots. Everytime they whine about olicity fans cheating on polls they use extensions to vote against felicity(cause apparently their zero personal life allows them to vote all day against a character in order to prove a point). They are just dumb, and  MG is even more dumb for actually listening to them.

Its sad that MG is trying to earn back their good grace, especially since these are the same people who were harassing him months ago, trying to get him fired making gross posts about his appearance. But oh well,i dont expect  anything else from comic purists  like himself. He targets the same audience he represents. Kinda embarassing kissing the ass of the people that straight out wished for your death.
