Midseason Ratings Report: The CW's Best and Worst Performing Shows
By Matt Webb Mitovich / December 31 2021
https://tvline.com/2021/12/31/ratings-2021-2022-tv-season-best-worst-cw/

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Though Walker‘s audience slipped 30 percent vs. its noteworthy freshman run, it’s still putting up strong numbers for The CW. And All American‘s performance (both linear and via streaming) continues to be a touchdown, ergo the upcoming Homecoming spinoff…. The Flash hasn’t quantifiably faded as much as some assume, but the more “super” stories may be Stargirl (which dipped only a bit transitioning into the heat of fall) and Legends of Tomorrow (whose audience grew versus the spring/summer Season 6)…. Is anyone else agog that a nostalgia magnet like Legends of the Hidden Temple hasn’t clicked?… Midseason looks good, with the likes of Walker and All American to be joined by new seasons of Superman & Lois and Kung Fu — aka two of the network’s most watched series last season.

FYI (I don't know how or if this will affect The CW shows like LoT)...

The CW Majority Stake Sale Explored By WarnerMedia & ViacomCBS; Nexstar Among Suitors
By Nellie Andreeva    January 5, 2022
https://deadline.com/2022/01/the-cw-sale-warnermedia-viacomcbs-nexstar-1234905157/

Quote

The CW may get a new majority owner. Fifteen years after the broadcast network’s launch, its co-parents, ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia, are considering a controlling stake sale, sources confirm to Deadline. Nexstar Media Group, which is the CW’s largest affiliate group following its acquisition of Tribune, is believed to be among interested buyers. Sources caution that conversations with multiple suitors are in exploratory stages and no deal is imminent.

The potential sale, first reported by the WSJ, comes amid an ownership change for WarnerMedia, which is being acquired by Discovery, pending regulatory approval. None of the architects of the CW, which replaced the WB and UPN in 2006, are still around, most notably former CBS CEO Les Moonves, who was the driving force behind it. Since the CW’s creation, CBS merged with Viacom while WarnerMedia was acquired by AT&T which is now selling it to Discovery.
*  *  *
The CW, which caters to young adults, has defied expectations getting to 15 years when many had predicted that it would fold or move to cable/digital early in its run. The network’s business model has worked because of its unique setup, being co-owned by two major studios that supply all of its scripted programming. While the CW has never been profitable as a standalone entity, it has created value for its studio parents, providing U.S. broadcast distribution for shows that they can then exploit internationally and on streaming. Among valuable assets the CW has helped create for its studio partners include the Arrowverse series, Riverdale, All American and Gossip Girl (Warner Bros.) and Walker, Dynasty and Jane the Virgin (CBS Studios)

That is hard to replicate, which is why I hear the most likely scenario would be for WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS to sell a majority stake in the CW while retaining minority ownership and remaining suppliers. The current CW model makes it unfeasible for outside studios to produce shows for the network; it would be interesting to see if a new majority owner would change the terms so other studios can supply the network alongside Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.
*  *  *
A Nexstar deal would bring the CW in line with the other broadcast networks, following the traditional model of a network controlling its main affiliate stations. It would eliminate the stress over the network’s future every time the contracts with the major CW affiliate groups are up for renewal.

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow is back, and this time it’s got psychotic robo-doppelgängers
By Jarrod Jones     January 12, 2022
https://www.avclub.com/dc-s-legends-of-tomorrow-is-back-and-this-time-it-s-go-1848350389

Quote

That’s the sinister premise of “Paranoid Android”, a shifty-eyed hour away from our beloved Legends that explores the power structures at play within the mysterious Rogue Waverider that destroyed the “real” Waverider last season and establishes exactly what kind of adversaries our flesh-and-blood Legends will be up against for the duration of this seventh season. It’s a wild and refreshingly comic book-y turn of events, filled with intrigue and betrayals and a surprisingly grim, Serling-esque twist at the end that’s meant to elicit a chill and succeeds in doing so.
*  *  *
Caity Lotz is ever the MVP of Legends Of Tomorrow, but this season she’s taken a backseat so that newer cast members can have their chance to shine. It’s wonderful that Legends is the type of show that shares the spotlight, but it’s just as wonderful to see Lotz get a chance to flex her formidable dramatic chops once again. “Paranoid Android” is filled with expert close-ups of Lotz evaluating an ever-changing situation with her crystal blue eyes, tossing baleful glances at Dr. Sharpe and kicking serious ass all over the timeline decked out in her Legendary White Canary uniform. When Dr. Sharpe operates on Robo-Sara, the camera is fixed on her reactions so when the revelation that she is not really a human being comes it hits that much harder. (As for the other Robo-Legends, they take the news in stride, presumably because of episode time-constraints.)
*  *  *
What makes Robo-Zari buy into Mean Gideon’s rhetoric? Turns out it’s just a bit of solid, provable reasoning: “Every time the Legends try to fix history, they screw it up even worse.” Hard to argue against that.

87. Sara and Ava

Legends of Tomorrow

Let's hear it for the enemies-to-lovers pipeline! Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), the captain of the chaos-loving Legends of Tomorrow, and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan), a type-A agent at the Time Bureau, didn't get along when they met in season 3. In fact, their first meeting ended with Ava holding a gun to the trained assassin's head. Yet, their dynamic didn't remain tense for too long, because they started dating in the back half of the season and were living together by the beginning of season 4. "When Jes Macallan came in to do her first chemistry read with Caity Lotz, it was evident how great a couple they would make on screen," Legends of Tomorrow co-showrunner Phil Klemmer told EW in 2018. "But the last thing we wanted to do was to make their relationship come too easily. After two seasons of Sara loving 'em and leaving 'em, we wanted to challenge her with something more than a one night stand with some random historical figure-of-the-week." —Chancellor Agard

To find out, we talk to Keto Shimizu, showrunner of Legends of Tomorrow, and Terry Matalas, showrunner of Star Trek: Picard.

One common time travel trope is that if you try to change the past, you'll just screw up somehow. Your gun will jam, or you'll trip. In a recent episode of Legends of Tomorrow, this phenomenon is revealed to be the work of a white dude in a top hat.

Interesting that Captain Cold is being depicted as dark-skinned. Wentworth Miller is a white-passing Black man, but Leonard Snart has only been presented as White, as far as I know. Unless this is going to be a different version...? Or the cover artist is taking liberties. I'd be interested in seeing if the interior art also has him dark-skinned.

Best Sci-Fi TV Shows of the Past 15 Years
By Alec Bojalad, Michael Ahr, Kayti Burt, Kirsten Howard, Shamus Kelley, Mike Cecchini     February 25, 2022
https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/best-sci-fi-tv-shows-of-the-past-15-years/

... Just like we did for film, a panel of Den of Geek contributors and our readers have voted on a list of the 25 best sci-fi shows.
*  *  *
5. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

* Readers’ Choice!

If there’s one show on this list that best earns the adjective “delightful,” it’s Legends of Tomorrow. But it’s also almost impossible to properly describe. Legends has changed so much from its early days, but the core concept: C-list superheroes who have time-travel (mis)adventures remains the same. Yes, it’s part of the wider “Arrowverse” of TV shows, and sure, much of the roster at one time or another have been DC characters…but this isn’t a superhero show. It’s a workplace comedy with time travel, aliens, sorcerers, the occasional trip to Hell, and rules that exist only to be broken.

Legends has built up a dense mythology all its own, but it’s also so self-contained and episodic that you can jump into most of the later seasons and pick it up. Some whisper that the first two seasons are less than enthralling (don’t believe them) but don’t forget it took no less than Star Trek: The Next Generation a full two seasons to achieve greatness, too. Start at the beginning if it suits you, or jump into season three when things start getting weirder, hornier, and funnier. Delight in the (usually) wholesome fun, one of the best sci-fi ensemble casts of this century, and the coolest ship currently gracing TV screens. – MC

Here's Every Series in The CW's Arrowverse, Ranked

3/7  Legends of Tomorrow
...
This is the CW’s expected “team-up” series, but thanks to a unique, zany sense of style, it’s anything but tired. Pulling together a rotating cast of characters from other CW superhero properties, Legends of Tomorrow frees itself from the overdone grittiness of other superhero television to indulge in non-stop hilarity and a freedom of creative direction. Using time travel as a primary plot device, these heroes travel to different places and tackle different threats with good wit and good humor. Season 7 of the series comes to Netflix in March 2022.

Although Legends of Tomorrow has yet to be renewed, co-showrunner Keto Shimizu wants to make one thing clear: This Wednesday’s season finale (The CW, 8/7c) is in no way meant to be a series ender.

Typically by this time of year, the time-traveling drama has already been picked up for another season. But of course, the writing team must craft each finale well before it airs, so the show’s uncertain future is often just a fact of life in the TV biz. “Just because of the timing of everything, we had to just go forth and create a story that felt satisfying and exciting for us as writers and thinking [about] the fans and what they would want to see… but not having any idea of whether or not we would continue this story afterwards,” Shimizu tells TVLine.

“But that being said, we chose to take the route of optimism and to tell a story that is propulsive into a future season,” Shimizu adds. “It’s certainly a gamble. But it’s a gamble that we were more than willing to take because we wanted it to be crystal clear to anyone watching this season finale that it was meant to be just that — a season finale, not series finale — and that the writers intend to tell many more [stories] going forward.”
*  *  *
“We were building up to this moment that felt like it could have been the end of the series. But of course, it’s not the end of the series,” Shimizu says. “It almost felt too neat to be a Legends of Tomorrow series finale. Something was always going to give, something was always going to change everything at the last minute, and that’s why it felt necessary to tell that story and kind of get it out of the way.”

DC's Legends of Tomorrow EP Says the Uncertainty About Renewal Could Make Season 8 Better
By RUSS BURLINGAME - March 1, 2022
https://comicbook.com/dc/news/dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-ep-says-the-uncertainty-about-renewal-could-make-season-8-better/

Quote

DC's Legends of Tomorrow heads into its season finale tomorrow night with no definite renewal for an eighth season, leaving fans -- as well as the cast and crew -- to wonder whether tomorrow might be the last time the team ever gets to screw things up for the better. And while it's always nice to get the early renewals that The CW has been doling out for the last couple of years, executive producer Phil Klemmer, who has been with Legends from the very beginning, told ComicBook that there is an upside to the uncertainty: as he and the writers begin talking about possible season 8 ideas, they're far from complacent. He thinks that insecurity could ultimately make a prospective season 8 even stronger.
*  *  *
"I think if we do come back, I think the fact that we had this moment of uncertainty would be an occasion for us to remind ourselves how very, very lucky we are," Klemmer told ComicBook. "If we do come back, I think the show will benefit from the fact that we didn't allow ourselves to get complacent."

Some exit interviews with Nick Zano...

Legends of Tomorrow star explains their decision to leave and 'honorable exit'
By Chancellor Agard    March 02, 2022
https://ew.com/tv/legends-of-tomorrow-nick-zano-exit-season-7-finale/

Quote

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So this is your final episode as a series regular. Was it your decision to make this your last season?
NICK ZANO:
It was my decision. My contract was coming to an end. I had a conversation with Phil Klemmer, my main man in Burbank, and I told him that I think I'm going to end it when it ends. That decision was made during last hiatus, but the only people who knew were Phil and the producers. My castmates didn't know. So we started shooting the season, and I didn't say anything to anybody because I'm very uncomfortable with that kind of attention.

Eventually, I think five episodes in, the writing starts coming on the wall that they're setting up something for Nate, and I eventually told my coworkers. I'm like, "This is it." They're like, "What?!" And it became the thing I didn't want it to become, but I was just postponing it because I didn't want to be in it. We're a tight group that's been through a lot. In TV, you don't really get too many opportunities to get a proper goodbye to a character you portray for six or seven years of your life.

How hopeful are you for Season 8?
I’ll be completely honest: I have no idea. It’s never taken this long to get a pickup, so certainly every day that goes by makes us a little bit more nervous.

I think the show’s performing pretty well, and we have such a rabid fan base and have gotten just more and more accolades from the press. I would be really shocked if the show was not picked up, not just because suddenly all these writers that I love would be scrambling and a crew would be out of work, but I would just be shocked. It just seems like it would be a very tough move for the network to cancel such a beloved show. But again, I just don’t know. This is uncharted territory for Legends. I feel like we’ve never had to wait this long.

Another interview with Keto Shimizu...

Legends EP Talks [OMITTED WORD]'s Long-Awaited Introduction, Sara's Big News
By Vlada Gelman / March 2 2022
https://tvline.com/2022/03/02/legends-of-tomorrow-recap-season-7-finale-episode-13-booster-gold/

Quote

TVLINE | Booster Gold is a character that fans have been speculating about and wanting on the show for a while. Why was now the right time to bring him in?
Booster Gold, obviously, is someone who’s always been kind of tied to the DNA of Legends of Tomorrow because he’s time-traveling, because in the comic books, [he has a] relationship to Rip and all of that. However, he was not on the table for us for pretty much our entire run… and DC is very [protective] about which characters get to go into what medium. So it wasn’t even something we could ask for until there were a lot of talks between us and the studio and the network about introducing a new character at the end of this season, and we asked DC about this character. We knew it was a longshot. We knew they’d probably say no. However, they talked and they had all their internal discussions and did all their equations and decided that, yes, we could use him now. So that’s really how it came about was that we knew we wanted to introduce a big character at the end of the season, and finally, we just said, “Hey, what about Booster Gold?”

TVLINE | What are you excited to explore with him if there’s another season? What doors does his character open up for you?
A lot of doors. He’s such a big personality and is the star of his own crazy movie in a way. The fact that he’s in this situation like Thawne was means that something happened before to get him into that particular location. And also, he’s just such a fun mix of selfish but also charming and humorous and certainly driven by his ego. But as with all our characters, we feel like there’s a warm, gooey center that the Legends will have a lot of fun peeling back, and likewise, he with them. He’s a kind of character who can really poke at our Legends and their perceptions of each other and themselves and maybe call them out on some of the bulls–t here and there. That’s always a really great kind of energy to bring on the ship, someone who has a very distinct point of view and who can keep everybody on their toes.

TVLINE | He comes into the Legends’ lives and ends up getting them arrested for time crimes. How’s that going to shape a potential Season 8?
Well, it’s going to have a huge impact on a potential Season 8 in that they’re going to be in jail. [Laughs] Every season is something new. We’re going to find out more about this organization that has put all the fixers in all these different places and find out what happens when you commit too many time crimes.

TVLINE | You’re on your second half-alien pregnancy now, but this time, you have your main, butt-kicking character pregnant and mortal once again, and you touch on the dangers of that in the finale. But how does that change the show moving forward?
We wanted to make sure that there were real stakes for Sara and her changing body. This is something that happens when women get pregnant is they suddenly feel like they lose all this control and all this autonomy and and they do fundamentally change… We really wanted to throw Sara into a situation that we think will provide some good stories for the next season, if we get one.

TVLINE | This is a big step for Sara and Ava, and especially for Sara, who’s come such a long way from when we first met her on Arrow. Can you talk about where you hope to see their relationship go next season?
We really wanted this for them. It felt like they already are parents because they’ve had to be moms to all these grown-ass adults on their ship for so long. It felt right that now they would have to face the challenge of a real small person who is completely dependent on them…. Parenthood has been a long time coming for these two, and in a way, it’s already been happening.

Interview with showrunner Phil Klemmer...

Legends of Tomorrow boss unpacks Donald Faison's debut and that poignantly wacky Avalance twist
By Chancellor Agard    March 02, 2022
https://ew.com/tv/legends-of-tomorrow-season-7-finale-booster-gold/

Quote

Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti has reportedly been working on a Booster Gold movie for years. How did the character wind up on Legends?
As you might expect, through the side door you'd least expect it [to]. I just remember [co-showrunner Keto Shimizu] and I were on a call with Kim Roberto at DC, and we were just talking about fun characters. I think somebody threw it out there, of course never [imagining] in a million years would we get Booster Gold. And then it felt like 15 minutes later, DC called us back and was just like, "Hey, Booster's yours." And just you have a moment of being like, "Okay, this is clearly a prank of some sort, because..." We were all giddy and in disbelief and then it just became a quest of finding an actor who was worthy of the character.

Which ended up being Donald Faison!
Again, you have these moments of not wanting to allow yourself to get your heart set on someone like Donald Faison and we saw it taking shape and [couldn't] believe this [was] happening. And then you have this moment of finally meeting the guy, and obviously we're all super familiar with his work. He just hopped on a Zoom from... For whatever reason he was hiding in his wife's closet. I think it had good acoustics or he was trying to avoid something else in the house. And you're like, "This guy is the best." This guy loves the show, loves the world. He's as steeped in this stuff as any of us who've been working on the show for seven years.

He just walked on set and immediately knew every single crew person's name. I showed up for the second half of the finale and he already had these inside jokes with everybody else. I started to get jealous [Laughs]. It was exactly what we needed to get through what it takes to shoot World War I, trenches, snow. As it did in season 2, it was real snow, real rain, real sleet. Look, the bodies were fake, but other than that, it was very much a battleground. And then he comes on and just to have that infusion of energy from somebody who's walking into it for the first time, you're like "Oh God, we're so lucky to have him."

Why was Booster Gold on your mind to begin with? Were you just looking for a DC character to bring in at the end of the season? How did Booster end up fitting the needs of the story?
It's always the tonal fit and just knowing, I don't know, there's just something so lovable and unexpected. You just knew that he was going to work as kind of a bit of the merry prankster, a bit of a BS artist. But yeah, it's also the bittersweetness of saying goodbye to one character and getting to know another one. There's that moment where Nick Zano in the 10th scene in the finale… It really does feel there is a passing of the torch in that moment.

Nick Zano's energy and Donald Faison's energy, these are distinct performers and people. But I don't know, there is this tremendous loss with Nick Zano leaving and almost psychologically, you have to somehow [move forward]. We have the promise of a new character, a new dynamic, just new stories. I don't know [if] that takes some of the sting out, but I got to say being there on Nick's last day [was] really devastating to watch a cast and crew surround this guy who's so beloved. He's leaving on the best possible terms.
*  *  *
Just to confirm: If Legends is renewed for another season, Nick won't be returning as a series regular?
I mean, until he wants to and is ready to come back, for sure. That door's always open.

How did you decide that Nate leaving the team would also mean losing his powers?
It was sort of still up in the air until nearly the end because all season we've been sort of playing with the notion of whether he would move into the totem, whether Zari would move out and live in the weirdo pocket dimension with him, and how they could do this long distance thing. And we've sort of played [with] the long shadow of his father, the great man. Nate has that little scene with Zari in the penultimate episode just talking about his legacy and how he originally thought he was supposed to live up to some Heywood model of virility and courage. And which ends in death in his dad's case and his grandfather's case, and I'm sure every other Heywood man died on a battlefield or an outer space or in some heroic way. I guess we just like the idea that you don't have to sacrifice, you don't have to die, [and] that you can leave it all in the field in a way that's not tragic. We wanted him to have some kind of sense of fulfillment that didn't mean that he was dead, and that you can be a man and a former superhero and you could live a domestic life and that can be heroic too.

When did you decide you want to end the season with Sara's alien-powered pregnancy?
We liked it for a lot of reasons because I think we were ready to unburden Sara of her alien powers and that was a convenient way to come up with it. And it's an apt metaphor of giving your life force to your child, which regular humans do as well.

But I think if you remember the season started with Ava's epic meltdown when she sort of lays in the gravel and does a dirt angel on the ground when they kill J Edgar Hoover. Jes was delivering something that we had never seen before. I think Caity really wanted her version of that scene, and we as writers wanted to give it a bookend because Ava lost her stuff and Sara was there to prop her up and it's only right. Relationships, it's constantly one person is pulling the other up. To just see Sara Lance's version of an existential freak out… And I cannot believe Caity really surprised me. I couldn't be more impressed with her capabilities, but she did something in that scene that I've never seen her do before, and it's just so gratifying that for us.

And I think the way that it was written, Keto did a masterful job of that scene, but also Caity brought something to it elevated it from like the normal soap operatic version of [when] somebody's unexpectedly pregnant. There's comedy to it, but there's realness to it. It makes me very excited for next season. When Caity read that script and I saw that she called, I had this moment of being like, "Oh no, I know she's got some trepidation about being pregnant [and] wondering, 'what does that mean for me as an intrepid badass superhero space captain?'" Once we assured her that we weren't looking to do a familiar story I think that she really, she gave it everything.
*  *  *
At this point, what can you say about this band of time cops who have arrested the Legends and what's in store for them in a potential eighth season?
I can't say too much about them just because I haven't pitched the studio and network. By the way the calendar worked, we didn't have our normal amount of time to sit around and pitch on the season to come just because we wrapped before the holidays.

I guess we do have a world that we'd like to explore, that I mean, the goal is always to find fresh snow and this season we made the Legends world just very, very small. Smaller than it's ever been, by stranding them for the first half of the season and making their adventures and misadventures like less about giant global superhero stakes and more about just kind of people helping people. There are great figures of history, but it is the millions of maybe unremembered people who actually are the fabric and thinking about history in terms of the "great men" is a mistake. And so yeah, God. This sounds like I'm just total bulls---ing to not answer your question, but yeah, we really want to continue to force us, and I guess invite our viewers, to think of history in a different way, in a more personal way.

And so if I think about the themes of next season, I mean, the Legends have been arrested and they're going to be forced to rehabilitate themselves, but I think we all know that they make mistakes, but they're doing nothing wrong. In 20 years, most of our jobs will be challenged by AI and so [season 7] was us trying to come up with a reason for, what do humans do that machines can't? I don't know, maybe next season we'll take on capitalism.

Zach Braff Wants To Play Blue Beetle To Donald Faison's Booster Gold [Exclusive]
BY BEN F. SILVERIO  MARCH 16, 2022
https://www.slashfilm.com/801784/zach-braff-wants-to-play-blue-beetle-to-donald-faisons-booster-gold-exclusive/

The director, podcaster, and star of the upcoming "Cheaper By The Dozen" remake for Disney+ is currently dating "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye" star Florence Pugh. Plus, his long-time friend and "Scrubs" co-star Donald Faison has just joined the Arrowverse as Booster Gold on "Legends of Tomorrow." At this point, he's surrounded. Though he's recently started to give the Marvel Cinematic Universe a chance due to his significant other's involvement in the franchise, it seems like it's only a matter of time until he dons a cape or a supersuit of his own. If the fans get their way, there's already a perfect role for Braff in The CW's corner of the DC Universe. And better yet, he's down to play that part.
*  *  *
... During an interview to promote "Cheaper By The Dozen," we asked Braff his thoughts on joining his friend [Donald Faison] as a DC superhero. Here's what he had to say:

"Listen, this keeps coming up and I want you to tell all your followers: I am down to play Ted Kord. Whoever owns the property. It's DC, right? Probably part of the BerlantiVerse. He's one of the first people who ever hired me. But yeah, Donald said that everyone [is saying that I should be Ted Kord]... I don't follow comic books. I'm sorry. I know people love them. I don't know anything about it, but yes, I'm here to announce that whoever owns the property. I'm down to play Ted Kord."

Legends Of Tomorrow And The Art Of Reinvention
BY RAFAEL MOTAMAYOR      MARCH 18, 2022
https://www.slashfilm.com/803883/legends-of-tomorrow-and-the-art-of-reinvention/

Quote

Of course, a central conundrum of "Legends of Tomorrow" is the desire to change the past to improve the present, but the show usually makes that a more personal dilemma than anything — like a character wanting to save a dead family member or wanting to prevent something happening to a loved one. But not this time. Season 7 raises the stakes to make the team debate if it is right to continue following their prime directive. They take more chances changing small things of the past, saving people, or starting an integrated, women-led assembly plant in the '40s. Though this is still a goofy show with hilarious standalone episodes (like a homage to reality TV), it is also arguably the most emotional season of the show yet because it focuses on the inevitability of time and the personal stakes of these characters.
*  *  *
By the end of the season, "Legends of Tomorrow" reinvents itself once again. The Legends have changed the timeline multiple times in order to fight the injustice and oppression of history. They have said goodbye to a longtime member of the team, they are getting ready to say goodbye and find other ways to help people — and they are also in jail with time-traveling hero Booster Gold. If the show does come back for season 8, it seems like we should prepare for another wildly different show. Stay weird, Legends.
