So my dad is at best a casual fan of basketball. He knows who Lebron and Kobe are but that's about it.

I was talking to him about the 90s players and mentioned MJ. My dad nodded and said, "Yeah, he had a style and flare to how he played but ... the player I loved was SCOTTIE PIPPEN." He then said he loved Scottie Pippen's defense (!!!) and also how he always shot baskets "off the glass." I looked up some Scottie Pippen footage and saw that yes, Scottie Pippen was one of those players (like Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant) who had a great bank shot. 

The plot thickens. My mom mentions that a couple years ago while on a road trip they actually passed through Hamburg, Arkansas because it was Scottie Pippen's home town. They said they drove around the town and talked about what humble beginnings he had.

So basically my dad has been a secret Scottie Pippen stan for ... almost 30 years?

His career as a gm though has nothing to do with him being the logo and his associated career as a player.  

Believe me I know about jerry west.  Read his biography.  Great player and gm.  I just don't agree because he is the nba logo that somehow makes the Lakers the greatest franchise

Disrespect?  I said nothing that wasn't true.  Jerry west lost many finals series. And it's not like those lakers teams were horribly overmatched or had less talent. 

 And I hate the Lakers, always have.   And can't stand lebron either.  The two of them pairing up for a title by signing AD and using his agent to steer free agents to his team isn't something I'm excited about. 

Ditto all the articles about genie buss being so great because she is the first female owner in the nba to win a title.  She inherited the team from her dad and then two of the top players in the league decide to come play for the Lakers like all the top players always do for the la lifestyle.  

So great.  ......a rich owner who inherited a team and a franchise known for getting all the top free agent players from other smaller market teams did it once again and won a title.  Slow clap from me starts now.....

Uh ... first of all it's Jeannie Buss. Second of all, not "all the top players always do for the LA lifestyle." I actually don't know what you're talking about here as Lebron and Anthony Davis are two of the top players but the others are definitely not in LA. Giannis, Kevin Durant (assuming he comes back strong from a very nasty injury), Jimmy Butler, the Splash Brothers, Luka Doncic, Jamal Murray ... I could go on. In fact the LA Lakers' weak bench was actually the reason the series went to six games.

And anyway I happen to like Lebron and I also prefer to look at the positive about the NBA bubble so ...

It’s Jeannie Buss but I’m digressing. She inherited the team from her dad but she was involved in the Lakers from the get go. Besides Lebron and AD, and maybe Rondo and Danny Green (who disappeared in the playoffs), the Lakers have a bunch of nobodies. Lebron made Caruso and KCP look good, and that’s what he does- he makes the players around him better. Wasn’t he a PF and then a Shooting guard? Then he told Vogel he wanted to be PG since they didn’t have many options and managed that offense while also being a pretty good defender. All at the age of 35. The Rockets and Clippers has more star power and couldn’t get to the Finals.

I'll also add that the last minute signing of JR Smith is IMO proof that Lebron isn't a selfish person. JR Smith hasn't played in 2 years, he was the famous scapegoat of the 2018 finals, and he ran into some legal problems and personal difficulties. Lebron brought him back as a bench player. Yeah he didn't play much but can you imagine MJ doing something like that? Or Kobe?

Wasn't sure where to post this, but longtime Minneapolis sports journalist Sid Hartman died yesterday at 100. He was responsible for bringing the Lakers to Minneapolis from Detroit (they were called the Detroit Gems).  (They paid $15,000 for the Gems.) Sid was the first general manager of the Lakers and they won their first championships under him.

He worked for the paper from when he was 12, selling papers, until he died. I think he had his column in the paper yesterday. His best friend was probably Bud Grant. He was also good friends with Bobby Knight and George Steinbrenner and many others. Lindsay Whalen called in and said her goal when playing basketball in high school was to get mentioned in Sid's column. She finally did when she scored 40 points for the U of MN. Senator Amy Klobuchar also called in because her dad was a columnist for the paper, too, and rivals, then friends with Sid.

He had a sports show on the local radio for decades - last broadcast was in March when he turned 100 -  so now the whole day is devoted to people calling in and telling stories.

I think the nba trying to call me back in December just basically to have Christmas day games is a mistake.  Two month off-season with a draft shoved in there, one month draft to season opening?   Just push it back to the new year.

Since ABC treated the pre Christmas games like preseason with no Sunday broadcast it was almost like the holiday with the biggest stars on air was the actual start of the season

So with no long off season comes the shift to the national MLK honors  works.

grommit2, I'm not sure, all I saw was the date. Hopefully, they make some kind of announcement soon. A lot of the players I follow on social media haven't really been practicing since the bubble (or they aren't showing that on their accounts). I think the draft is in a few weeks and that gives those guys about a month to get ready with their new teams.

  • Draft November 18 (I have time to work on my jumper ;> )
  • Training camp December 1
  • 72 game schedule, players approved, starting December 22
  • Other stuff TBD

Tonight is the NBA Draft. I can't imagine how Mr. Big Baller Brand is going to feel if his other son (LaMelo) get drafted by the Timberwolves (1st pick). I'm also curious about what those Warriors are going to do with the 2nd pick. Whoever they get, I'm going to instantly root against him because of those Warriors.

I don't know who is going to be pick #5 (Cavaliers). I'm not getting my hopes up on them picking someone good in this Draft. 

As for the Knicks, they have picks 8 & 23. They're going to find a way to mess this up like they always do.

Man that sucks.  The Warriors were looking to rebound from 2019-2020.  I think they were in a great draft spot based off of an awful year that followed half a decade of brilliance.  

Growsonwalls, I guess we won't know for sure until we see how Durant performs this upcoming season.  Cousins isn't a great example, IMO, but if KD were to exceed expectations, it would be unprecedented.  Either way, I don't know if I can bet on Klay returning to his dominant self again; two major injuries and he isn't getting any younger

All I know was Kobe Bryant was never remotely the same after he ruptured his Achilles, and it also essentially ended the careers of Isiah Thomas, Elgin Baylor, and Chauncey Billups.

Man this sucks 😞 I love following Klay and his dog Rocco on IG.

When was the last time the commissioner wasn't booed on draft night? I know it goes back at least to the Stern era.

I hope fans get a chance to reestablish the tradition next year.

Damn, you know you're getting old when the guy you remember watching as a kid (Penny Hardaway) is now the old guy cheering on draft picks (congrats James Wiseman). 

As for Charlotte picking LaMelo Ball, Michael Jordan has a poor history developing talent. We'll see.

Ok I will never approve of the tragedy porn ESPN reporters love when a player gets drafted. Yes it's an emotional moment. Some of these players obviously have had hard journeys to get to the NBA. But it's like every year they want to make certain players cry even more by asking them about a dead mother/brother/father. Come on. Let these young men celebrate before getting them all teary-eyed again.
