tv echo September 19, 2022 Share September 19, 2022 Warner Bros. Discovery Has Bigger Problems Than Its DC Search BY KIM MASTERS SEPTEMBER 16, 2022https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/warner-bros-discovery-has-bigger-problems-than-its-dc-search-1235221804/ Quote But the declaration of the DC reset was premature. Zaslav is continuing to meet with prospective candidates to lead the effort, but surprising to no one, he has not found a Kevin Feige clone. A negotiation with producer Dan Lin became public (possibly due to a meeting that was held outdoors in plain sight because of WBD consultant Alan Horn’s COVID-19 concerns) but then apparently fell apart over complications involving Lin’s production/nonprofit company Rideback. Meanwhile, DC Films president Walter Hamada called his lawyer after watching Batgirl get binned and listening to Zaslav talk about the bright future under superior but unnamed leadership. Film studio co-chairman Michael De Luca talked him into staying until Black Adam is released in October, but his exit is being negotiated. At this point, it’s hard to think of any strong candidate to run a DC silo. And there are several reasons to wonder why anyone with a decent career would want the job. By now, Zaslav has made enough moves to reveal that — despite that extensive goodwill tour — he is exactly the tough boss that former Discovery insiders described when the Warner Media-Discovery combination first made the news. And with CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels working to slash the staggering $50 billion-plus in debt, the company has content creators wondering publicly what happened to material that disappeared from the streamer without a word of warning, while insiders send out résumés as layoffs roll. “Zaslav doesn’t know what he doesn’t know,” says one leading talent rep. “That’s scary. And you’re always going to be compared to Marvel. It’s unfair. By the time they were being judged, it was working. It’s the exact opposite at Warner. It’s rough all around. Who the fuck would want that job?” The Marvel comparison looms large. While Feige has had the advantage of being what one industry source calls both the architect and contractor of the Marvel universe, the DC property has been through multiple iterations. Its fans are passionate — sometimes to the point of toxicity — and hardly unified. “DC is so fragmented,” says one talent rep. “J.J. [Abrams] had this one, Zack Snyder had that one, Todd Phillips had the other thing. And they’re all such huge egos.” All these issues pale next to the biggest question hovering over any top job at WBD: How long will this gig last? The company is grappling with that heavy debt load and skeptical investors. One former Zaslav exec recently received a letter from a due-diligence firm on behalf of an unspecified client, asking for his evaluation of Zaslav’s leadership style, strategic plans and likelihood of success. That could suggest various possibilities — a potential acquirer digging around, a dissident shareholder sniffing for weakness, a hedge fund trying to place a bet. So much uncertainty. Given the company’s daunting challenges, it has become accepted wisdom at the highest levels of the industry that another deal waits in the wings for Warner Bros. Discovery. For reasons related to the complicated structure of that merger, no negotiations can happen until April 2024. But at that point, many industry observers believe that Comcast’s Brian Roberts will make a long-awaited move, looking to combine NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery. * * * Of course an obituary is premature. Maybe Warners will do a deal with Comcast, maybe not. Meanwhile, Zaslav continues his quest to find a DC superhero, but it seems possible that, eventually, De Luca and Pam Abdy — now acting heads of the division — will end up running the thing by default. De Luca was a comic book collector as a kid, and years ago, at New Line, he made Blade and even had an Iron Man movie in development. (A source says Bob Shaye, the New Line chief at the time, let the option lapse, arguing that it didn’t make sense because Iron Man was too heavy to fly.) “Mike was championing and scratching at the surface of this comic book universe long before it became the only thing that anybody is interested in seeing,” says one longtime associate. Bruinsfan September 20, 2022 Share September 20, 2022 I'm wondering if Bruce Timm and Paul Dini have been dismissed from consideration because they oversaw "kid's stuff" back in the day, or if they were asked about the position(s) and replied "OH HELL NO!" before running out through the nearest wall... 1 Link to comment
Tenshinhan September 20, 2022 Share September 20, 2022 I wouldn't want Bruce Timm or Paul Dini anywhere near any kind of DC film universe. Those guys did well enough in television animation, but live-action movies are another beast. Besides, I think their shows were hugely overrated, and grew more and more flawed as time moved on. The last thing DC needs is to have any more properties consumed and overshadowed by those guys in my view. Link to comment
Perfect Xero September 21, 2022 Share September 21, 2022 Bruce Timm: "Okay, so this is the relaunch of Green Lantern, so the first act of the movie is just going to be Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon going on dates and having sex, it's really important that we establish this relationship as it's the cornerstone of the entire Universe and that Barbara is much better off with Bruce than she was with that loser dweeb Dick. Also that it's totally normal for a guy to date the ex-girlfriend of the kid he raised, and that no one should read anything weird into it. All the other characters need to be supportive and tell Bruce what a great match he and Barbara are and how much that dork Robin sucks. Anyway, Hal Jordan is going to fight Sinestro or something in the background while all this is going on." 5 Link to comment

Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Asif Sadiq will head the group. Other key leaders include Karen Horne, SVP for North America; Rukasana Bhaijee, VP in Europe, Middle East and Africa; Niarchos Pabalis, director for Latin America; with a new role for Asia-Pacific to be announced soon. All four leaders will report to Sadiq. The move comes nearly six months after the close of the $43 billion merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery. The combined company has faced criticism in the early going over its decision to appoint a slate of entirely white, male directors to its board of directors and a relative lack of diversity in its top exec ranks. Advocates and lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Joaquin Castro, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, have voiced their concerns. * * * “A strong focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is a top priority for our company, and we are committed to doing everything we can to get this right — not only because it makes good business sense, but because it allows us to build stronger connections with employees, partners and consumers,” Sadiq said in the official announcement. “We have put in place an incredibly talented and experienced global team, and are in the process of building and implementing a strategy that will enable us to have a positive, lasting impact locally, regionally and beyond.” Link to comment

tv echo September 28, 2022 Share September 28, 2022 (edited) Blue Beetle is apparently still a go... Latino superheroes are saving the day in Hollywood MANDALIT DEL BARCO September 27, 2022https://www.npr.org/2022/09/27/1124084114/latino-superheroes-are-saving-the-day-in-hollywood Quote The Batgirl news worried fans about other DC superheroes, such as Blue Beetle, whose feature film is set for release next summer. "I'm not going to lie. There was concern, anger, fear at first," says Puerto Rican director Angel Manuel Soto. He says studio executives reassured him Blue Beetle won't suffer the same fate as Batgirl. "They told me not to worry, the film has their full support." Actor Xolo Maridueña stars as Jaime Reyes, who becomes "Blue Beetle" when he's implanted with super-powered alien armor. "He's kind of like a fusion of Green Lantern and Iron Man. He has a scarab from outer space that is attached to his body called Khaji da." * * * "He's a first-generation Mexican-American kid from El Paso, Texas," Maridueña explains. Gareth Dunnet Alcocer wrote the screenplay for Blue Beetle, which follows the journey of Reyes and his entire family. "What would my mom do if an alien technology burrowed into my spine? She would not think it's cool," says Alcocer. "And for the Reyes family, this is terrible. 'We're going to get attention from American institutions, from the government, from military, from the police.'" Also FYI... Warner Bros. Discovery Int’l President on His Commitment to Local Content and Saying “100 Percent Yes” to Theatrical Business BY GEORG SZALAI SEPTEMBER 27, 2022https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/warner-bros-discovery-international-content-movies-1235225485/ Quote “The theatrical business is here to stay,” Warner Bros. Discovery is saying “100 percent yes” to theatrical windows, and local content is an important complement to global hits, the conglomerate’s president, international Gerhard Zeiler told a Royal Television Society (RTS) gathering in London on Tuesday. * * * “The vision is actually quite easy. We are a content company,” Zeiler said when asked about the vision of the merged Warner Bros. Discovery. “We tell stories” in many, many ways, including in feature films, TV series, animation, sports, news, documentaries and games. He touted the “breadth” of how the firm tells stories, while highlighting “the development and quality” of content, from DC and HBO franchises, including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, as a key mandate for the company’s management team. “That’s not possible in a creative industry,” he said, though, when asked if hit films can be predicted with certainty. Discussing the company’s distribution strategy, he said it is similarly broad-based, highlighting that the conglomerate was saying “100 percent yes to the theatrical business” and exclusive cinema windows. “Everyone who believed cinema is dead has been proven wrong and will be [shown to be] wrong in the future,” Zeiler argued. “The theatrical business is here to stay, although, of course, the pandemic changed things.” For example, “not everyone is still feeling safe to go back to the cinema” after the COVID pandemic, and some may need a big film to make them go to a cinema, but movies continue to attract audiences and are a “must-have,” he said. Overall, “we don’t believe that it makes sense to put all the content we have into one window,” Zeiler highlighted, arguing that was not what consumers want. * * * Discussing his current boss, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Zeiler said: “Whoever knows David Zaslav, knows that he is very ambitious, and we are an ambitious company. … We want to be a top three media player, and I personally would be really disappointed if there is the number three in front of our ranking.” Edited September 28, 2022 by tv echo Link to comment
tv echo October 19, 2022 Share October 19, 2022 (edited) DC at a Turning Point: James Gunn Pitches Secret Movie, Dwayne Johnson Flexes His Superman Power (Exclusive) BY BORYS KIT OCTOBER 17, 2022 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dc-movies-james-gunn-pithces-dwayne-johnson-1235243030/ Quote In fact, without a permanent leader to guide the stable containing some of the biggest and best known characters in the world, DC is currently the scene of a secret, but dramatic, IP land grab among some of the biggest players in Hollywood. * * * And The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively report that James Gunn, the filmmaker behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies as well as Warners’ DC-based The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, is angling for his own new DC project (or two). Sources tell THR that Gunn and producer Peter Safran are in talks with Warners for a mystery movie, possibly more, that Gunn would tackle. (Safran is already in the DC business, being a producer on Shazam! and its upcoming sequel, as well as Aquaman and that movie’s sequel.) Warners had no comment, but as one insider observes, a carving of the comic company’s intellectual assets is happening. “DC is definitely in play,” says this person. How much play may depend on your perspective from inside or outside the studio. While it isn’t clear what hero or teams Gunn is targeting, and the writer-director would focus on a second season of Peacemaker first, the studio’s eyes are very much on Superman. Under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, Warners has an intense desire to reprise the Cavill iteration of the hero. The project that would essentially be Man of Steel 2 is being produced by Charles Roven and is currently searching for writers. (There is a wishlist, of course. And Christopher McQuarrie, the hand that guides the Mission: Impossible movies was on it. McQuarrie worked with Cavill on the 2018 installment, Fallout, but sources say no official outreach has been made nor may it be feasible, as the director is working on the next back-to-back M:I installments.) [Dwayne] Johnson, however, has Superman plans of his own, and has been very vocal about his desire to make a Black Adam versus Superman movie, a desire he has only reiterated more frequently in the lead-up to Adam’s release. This comes as he talks up the “surprise” cameo at the end of Adam, with the actor all but stating that Cavill will appear. Insiders are wondering if Johnson’s comments are intended to goose the movie’s opening weekend box office numbers or to maneuver Superman onto his own chessboard, or perhaps both. * * * Meanwhile, in Gotham City, filmmaker Reeves is quietly making his own expansion plans. Reeves is developing a sequel to his The Batman, which grossed a respectable $770.8 million worldwide when it was released in March. Already, a series spinoff focusing on Colin Farrell’s Penguin is on its way to filming next year. But Reeves is plotting more. The filmmaker is meeting with writers and directors to build out movies — yes movies, not just series — focused on Batman rogue’s gallery, both established and more obscure, with characters ranging from the Scarecrow to Clayface to Professor Pyg. All those projects are in the very early stages of gestation. It is unclear where the Superman moves leave Abrams, who is still on track to produce Coates’ movie centered on the last son of Krypton. That feature would exist outside any larger DC movie continuity, much like Todd Phillips’ Joker movies. The megaproducer had a few setbacks when some of his DC shows — based in the supernatural corners of DC and featuring characters such as Constantine and Zatanna — were scrapped at WBD’s HBO Max streaming service. (They are now being shopped to other streamers.) But he is not out of the game and is yet another Hollywood power in the mix vying for a piece of the DC pie. * * * “Right now it’s the Wild West,” says one insider. “Everyone is trying to grab as much as they can. And this is exactly what happens in a leadership vacuum.” One Warners insider disputes the idea of a leadership vacuum, saying the studio is not standing still and is moving ahead on several fronts, focusing on some of its A-list characters while planning and developing the wave beyond that. A script for Wonder Woman 3 by Patty Jenkins is expected imminently and a script for a Flash sequel is already written — by Aquaman scribe David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick — in case that movie, to be released June 23, 2023, does well. (The film stars controversial actor Ezra Miller, who in August met with Warners leadership after a string of arrests and bad headlines, and today pled not guilty to a felony burglary charge.) With Superman back on the active block, plus Reeves’ The Batman sequel moving forward, it puts the company’s big stars in the big-screen rotation. Edited October 19, 2022 by tv echo Link to comment

tv echo October 24, 2022 Share October 24, 2022 Warner Bros Discovery: Arrowverse Has Your DCEU Answers, Not Marvel Ray Flook October 20, 2022https://bleedingcool.com/tv/warner-bros-discovery-arrowverse-has-your-dceu-answers-not-marvel/ Quote Will Warner Bros. Discovery Still Be "Warner Bros. Discovery" in 2025? Right from the start, Zaslav needs to address the growing rumblings that WBD is here to stay and not just cleaning itself up for a sale to Comcast in a couple of years. Because if he can't, then folks aren't going to be interested in signing up for a long-term DCEU game plan that might not make it three years. Whoever the DCEU "Kevin Feige" is going to be, they need to know they have the space and the time to get things done. So right off the bat, get that message out. Assuming that you're able to do that… So Are You a Multiverse or Not? Right now, WBD has a ton of DCEU "side universes," from Todd Phillips' Joker and Matt Reeves' The Batman to James Gunn's The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker. And that's fine. But we all know Zaslav wants a "core" universe to build "The Big 3" (Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman) and then others from. So a line needs to be drawn before more cinematic & streaming "variants to the sacred timeline" start happening. But this is where a "Kevin Feige" is a must because you will need someone who can keep a number of egos stroked at the same time. Because a "multiverse" with a core DCU within it could be the very thing that differentiates the DCEU from the MCU. Stop Trying to Imitate Marvel Studios! Aside from needing a "Kevin Feige," WBD needs to stop trying to adopt the Marvel Studios playbook because it doesn't apply to today. That's what's so brilliant about it. It read the tea leaves and understood where the theater experience was going and the potential that streaming was only just beginning to show. But that was a plan for its time, a 2o22 plan. WBD is trying to run a 10-year-old playbook during a time when streaming is as big of a player as ever (even if Zaslav disagrees to what degree). If Marvel Studios was running its play in these times, a streaming series plan would be in place to complement the films and speed up the building of a cohesive shared universe. Right now, it vibes that Zaslav wants the vast majority of attention focused on the film side, and I'm not sure that's not a bit short-sighted. Want to Do Right by the DCEU? Look to the "Arrowverse"! WBD can "Michael Bay" the living s**t out over every one of their films coming out, and it still won't mask what really does work for the DCEU. Want to know what Henry Cavill's Superman, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker & Shazam! have in common? Viewers are presented with characters that they can relate to & connect with, portrayed by actors who vibe that they were made for those roles instead of just another big-name money grab. And it makes a big difference. Look no further than how long the calls have gone out by fans over Cavill being underutilized as The Man of Steel (a mistake Zaslav appears intent on fixing). In fact, Zaslav & the WBD folks have a perfect example of how successful this approach can be in its own backyard. Yup, The CW's "Arrowverse." Because when you're putting on full seasons of spandex drama on a broadcast network, you don't have the luxury of hiding behind big budgets & big effects. What worked, beginning with Arrow, running through a number of series over the years (Batwoman, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning & more) and continuing through the final episode of The Flash (Superman & Lois and DC's Stargirl aren't "Arrowverse" proper), is that the Arrowverse reminded us that our heroes' (and villains') lives were just as important outside of the costumes as they are when they're throwing down with that season's "big bad." Viewers begin to care about these people as members of their "television family," and encouraging is never a bad thing. Unless you cancel Batwoman and DC's Legends of Tomorrow because then you're going to rightfully hear about it. No proper series wrap-ups? Seriously? Anyway… sorry… got distracted. Link to comment

They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.” Another way not to make movies is to make underwater scenes. Cameron shot a majority of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in large water tanks, and his cast had to train to hold their breathes for minutes on end so that Cameron could film longer takes underwater. When asked what’s gained from shooting in actual water has opposed to the more CGI appraoch taken in films like “Aquaman” and Disney’s upcoming “The Little Mermaid,” Cameron answered, “Oh, I don’t know, maybe that it looks good?” Link to comment

We have a wonderful thing called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige told The Hollywood Reporter about whether or not he’s spoken to Gunn since the news broke. “How he’ll have any time to work on DC until May I don’t know, but once he does have the time I’ll be very excited. I’ll be first in line.” Greg Berlanti’s ‘Green Lantern’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped, Loses Writer (Exclusive) BY LESLEY GOLDBERG OCTOBER 26, 2022https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/greg-berlanti-green-lantern-series-hbo-max-redeveloped-1235248929/ Quote The drama, which has been in the works since late 2019, will now focus on John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes. The series, from exec producer Greg Berlanti, was to originally have revolved around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott and had already cast Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) as the respective Green Lanterns. As part of the creative overhaul, writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has departed the series after completing scripts for a full season of eight episodes. Sources say Grahame-Smith, who signed on as writer and showrunner a year after Green Lantern was announced, chose to leave the project after weathering a number of regime changes at HBO Max, its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, producers Warner Bros. Television, and now DC Comics. * * * The decision to refocus Green Lantern arrives at a pivotal time for DC. Sources say the character of John Stewart was off the table to producers who envisioned the show as focusing on the first Green Lantern, the openly gay Alan Scott, and Guy Gardner as well as a “multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.” With DC Comics topper Walter Hamada’s recent exit, a decision was made to start over and build the show around Stewart, a character who first appeared in the early 1970s and was modeled after Sidney Poitier. It’s worth noting that the Green Lantern creative overhaul has nothing to do with news this week that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tapped to lead film, TV and animation at the newly established DC Studios in a role similar to what Kevin Feige is doing at Marvel. (Gunn and Safran don’t start their new jobs until Nov. 1.) * * * As for Wittrock and Irvine, neither remains signed on to Green Lantern. Sources indicate that Berlanti Productions is eager to work with both actors when and if the project, which currently has a script-to-series commitment, moves forward. In spring 2021, when Wittrock and Irvine were cast, the show was still being fast-tracked and was to begin shooting that same year. The project is now on a slower, more HBO-like development track under Bloys and Warner Bros. TV topper Channing Dungey. A new logline for the series has not yet been determined as the project is back to being in early development. Link to comment

Specifically, we pushed Garcia on a potential encounter between Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero and the beacon of light that is Superman, and asked directly if Henry Cavill had officially signed on for more movies as Superman in the DC Universe. And Garcia told us: "I'm not sure what's going on in that regard. He wanted to come back, we wanted him to come back, and we wanted to make sure that we were able to establish that (his) character exists in the same universe as Black Adam. We have large ambitions for things we’d like to do, however all of these items are still in the works so I am unable to provide exact updates. But just know that we are fighting for it." * * * "It's never been about a one off or just about a fight. No, it's about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. tv echo November 4, 2022 Share November 4, 2022 Black Canary: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Teases Fate of HBO Max Exclusive Movies By JENNA ANDERSON - November 3, 2022 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/black-canary-warner-bros-discovery-ceo-fate-hbo-max-exclusive-movie/ Quote ... After Warner Bros. Discovery shelved its Batgirl HBO Max movie earlier this year, reports still indicated that Black Canary remained in development for the streaming service — but new comments from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav might throw a wrinkle into that. During Warner Bros. Discovery's Q3 earnings call on Thursday, Zaslav reiterated that the company does not plan to make movies exclusively for HBO Max. "We learned what doesn't work," Zaslav explained. "And this is what doesn't work for us based on everything that we've seen: direct-to-streaming movies. So spending a billion dollars or collapsing a motion picture window into a streaming service. The movies that we launch in theater do significantly better, and launching a 2-hour, 40-minute movie direct to streaming has done nothing for HBO Max in terms of viewership, retention or love of the service." * * * If Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios does not want to make Black Canary exclusively for HBO Max, a few options remain. There is the chance that the movie could be reworked to move to theaters, a shift that already happened with next year's Blue Beetle movie. There's also the chance that the movie could be reworked into an HBO Max-exclusive series — something that fans of the character were already campaigning for in recent years, and that DC Studios seems to be prioritizing with shows like Peacemaker and The Penguin. Unfortunately, the third option is that the project could end up getting shelved, similarly to what happened to Batgirl. Link to comment

Even at our most cynical, I think that deep down, that’s what we want.” As Cavill recalls on The Film That Lit My Fuse, his first opportunity to audition for the role of Superman came with 2006’s Superman Returns — and while the role would go to Brandon Routh that time around, he’d get to play him not too many years later in films including Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). While there had been speculation as to Superman’s DC future for a number of years, Cavill only a week ago confirmed he’ll once again don the superhero’s red cape after appearing as the character in the end credits of the Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam, released October 21. “I wanted to wait the weekend before posting this because I wanted to give you all the chance to watch Black Adam. But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman,” the actor said in a video posted to Instagram. Accompanying the post was a caption reading, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded.” Link to comment

Marvel Studios By Russ Milheim November 9, 2022https://thedirect.com/article/warner-bros-marvel-studios-vs-dc Quote While speaking on The Price-to-Value Podcast with Southeastern Asset Management, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav discussed the strengths of his newly acquired company and where they fall short of competition such as Marvel Studios. * * *"... When you compare DC to Marvel, Marvel is seven, eight, nine times bigger, but we have Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman. There’s a lot of opportunity there with Harry Potter. And then finally we having gaming, which is a very nice business for us. So, when I look at the businesses, the businesses themselves, I feel like, we have great assets and great businesses... I really like our hand.” * * *“… Our job is just to build a great business. But, it was significantly worse than we thought. And it is significantly worse than we thought. Some of that is that the economy is worse, and the advertising market is worse, and the overall economy [is] worse… [there's also a lot of stuff] that happened this year between... the AT&T end-of-year numbers and when we took over; that’s the bad news. The good news is, that because it’s a lot worse... there’s a lot more opportunity than we thought." * * *"HBO is stronger than we thought. The economics of HBO are not stronger than we thought, but the creative vitality, and I think, the longterm vitality of the HBO Max asset is stronger. And Warner Bros. Television, we are the biggest, I believe we’re the biggest and I think we’re the highest quality producer and maker of content… And we have a 100 year old motion picture business that’s kind of been underperforming the last couple of years..." * * *"You come over to Warner, we have the same or more tentpoles [as Disney]. And the reason that that’s important is, one of the reasons that House of the Dragon was so successful is that Game of Thrones was the most successful series in the history of premium… It already existed and people loved it. And if you bring back a new Batman movie or a new Superman movie, not only do you get the value of that motion picture, but you get the whole fanbase that loves it plus as you go outside the US, Europe and Latin America have about 41 or 42% of theaters that are in the US. And they have local content. And so there’s a big competition for whether you get space outside the US. But when you launch a Batman or a Superman or an Aquaman or a Wonder Woman or an Iron Man, you get space in almost every theater in the world." * * *"And it’s one of the reasons why very often on tentpoles, you can get twice the amount of economics outside of the US than you do in[side the US]. And so overall, what Warner Bros. has, is it has a treasure trove of historically loved characters and stories that can be remade, that can be pulled from, that can be used to attract great talent in the town together with the fact that there’s a lore around Warner Bros. and, Jack Warner, and Bob Daly that still has a mystique..." * * *"... but we can open a motion picture everywhere in the world under the Warner Bros. banner, and then we can put you on HBO on Sunday night, and we can say, like we did with Matt Reeves, ‘Come and do Batman with us. We’ll take Batman around the world,’ but also, the Penguin character is really interesting, so we’re gonna do an HBO series with the Penguin. So, if somebody wants Matt Reeves, who’s one of the most talented guys in the town, you know, we can give him Batman as his muse and then we can work with him on Penguin on HBO. And so I think it’s a killer combination.” James Gunn, Peter Safran Are Mapping Out “Eight- to 10-Year Plan” for DC BY AARON COUCH NOVEMBER 10, 2022https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dc-movies-james-gunn-peter-safran-1235259792/ Quote One week into their jobs leading DC’s film, TV and animation efforts, James Gunn and Peter Safran met with their new Warner Bros. Discovery cohorts at a virtual town hall with CEO David Zaslav on Thursday. For months, Zaslav has said he wanted leaders to help DC become more like Marvel Studios, which is home to the most successful film franchise in history, one known for its overarching storylines such as the Infinity Saga. At the town hall, Safran emphasized that DC will focus on telling a single story. “This was such a unique opportunity to tell one great overarching story”, said Safran, known for producing Shazam! and Aquaman. “One beautiful big story across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation.” * * * “The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that,” said Gunn. “We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight- to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.” Warner Bros Discovery Boss David Zaslav Holds Town Hall With New DC Heads James Gunn & Peter Safran About New Cohesive Universe By Anthony D'Alessandro November 10, 2022https://deadline.com/2022/11/warner-discovery-dc-james-gunn-david-zaslav-peter-safran-town-hall-1235169138/ Quote EXCLUSIVE: Deadline hears that a global Zoom meeting was held for Warner Bros Discovery employees Thursday morning, on which CEO David Zaslav introduced new DC Studios co-chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. It marked was first appearance together in front of the company since being named to their posts October 25. The execs expressed their shared excitement for the new structure, with Zaslav mentioning how the plan is to build a bible for a cohesive DC universe, one that is overarching across live-action films, TV, animation, gaming and more. * * * We’ve heard from some sources about confusion on the greenlight power at DC and Warners now: Who has full authority? Warners has been a place that has always greenlit by committee, particularly on the feature side. It’s our understanding that no future DC decisions are made sans Gunn and Safran. Their input is integral and necessary on all future projects so a wide map can be designed across the entire conglom. That said, if Gunn and Safran don’t want to move forward with a specific DC project, then the project doesn’t happen. We hear that DC Studios has no P&L. HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey Teases ‘The Penguin,’ ‘Dune: The Sisterhood,’ ‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 and Likelihood of a ‘Harry Potter’ Series By Jennifer Maas Nov 10, 2022https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/hbo-harry-potter-and-just-like-that-season-2-1235428270/ Quote Update on Greg Berlanti’s redeveloped “Green Lantern” TV series: “We remain very excited by the opportunity to make a big four-quadrant space opera with Greg and Sarah for HBO Max.” How “The Penguin” will fit into DC’s “The Batman” world: “‘Penguin’ will sit immediately after the end of ‘The Batman’ and temporally before the events of the second movie. The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say.” “The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level, because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.” If they will further expand the “Peacemaker” Universe, specifically with a Ratcatcher 2 series: “I absolutely cannot say a single word about any of this. I will tell you one of the great pleasures of my job is getting a peek inside of James Gunn’s brain, and it is wild and inventive place. I can say with certainty, whatever is coming from him in that neck of the woods is going to be really exciting for me.” Edited November 11, 2022 by tv echo Link to comment

But there was a lot that was unexpectedly worse than we thought. For me, I don’t want to buy a company that is really well run. It’s hard to make it better. So every day we open a closet, and something comes out,” the chief executive said during a wide-ranging keynote conversation at the RBC Media conference touching on a streaming rethink, overpriced sports, challenged advertising, DC leadership, theatrical windows and linear television. He retread some ground from a recent earnings call, his goal to convince Wall Street to look beyond the noise of cost cuts, layoffs and canceled shows. The company fell short of Wall Street expectations last quarter due to a slower advertising and merger restructuring charges. * * *DC: A “hugely undervalued asset. Our company is a creative company and so we found two great guys.” Filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safra started as studio co-chairs this month. “You will see a lot of growth around DC. In the wake of former DC Films boss Walter Hamada departing Warner Bros Discovery, he’s landed at Paramount Pictures in an exclusive, multi-year production deal. Huge gain here for the Melrose lot with an executive who not only steered DC to its highest-grossing movie in Aquaman with $1.1 billion worldwide, but also was behind The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror series ever with more than $2 billion in global box office. Hamada’s deal starts January 1 and he’ll be the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming. Paramount had a major win this fall with the horror movie Smile, which was originally destined for Paramount+ but pivoted to a theatrical release where it amassed close to $210 million worldwide, with more than $100M of that stateside. tv echo November 18, 2022 Share November 18, 2022 Marvel Fans Showing Franchise Fatigue, While DC Fans More Likely to Prefer Single Superhero Over Universe, Says New Fandom Study By Adam B. Vary Nov. 17, 2022https://variety.com/2022/film/news/marvel-dc-fandom-study-1235435282/ Quote Over one-third of Marvel fans feel fatigued from the constant stream of content served in theaters and on Disney+ this year, according to a new study released on Thursday by the fan platform Fandom. But the study also shows that Marvel fans are also far more inclined to watch any Marvel project in comparison to DC fans, who in turn are more likely to consume film and TV about a specific superhero rather than the entire DC catalogue. Those are a few of the extensive findings in the study, which drew from a survey of 5,000 entertainment and gaming fans between 13 and 54 years old, as well as what Fandom terms “proprietary insights” from its platform of over 300 million monthly users across 250,000 different wikis. * * * ... According to Fandom’s study, 81% of Marvel fans would watch anything released in the franchise, while 67% of DC fans would do the same. Conversely, just 38% of Marvel fans say they’re focused on specific superheroes rather than the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, compared to 57% of DC fans who care more about one or two superheroes rather than the full DC Universe. That could a major factor in why only 20% of DC fans say they’re fatigued by the number of releases in a year, versus 36% of Marvel fans who feel that way. Through September, Fandom reports that “The Batman” was the global site’s “largest cinematic release.” DC fans are also more 20% more likely than Marvel fans to buy products — collectables, clothes, even superhero-inspired menu items. 1 Link to comment
