Killian Jones/Captain Hook: One Handed Pirate With A Drinking Problem

I wondered what kind of cursed personality Hook would have gotten if he had been taken with the curse.  I'm thinking he would have straight laced pre-Hook Killian Jones who obeyed by the rules and couldn't stomach rum drinking.

It's hard to say.  With some people there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in their cursed personalities:  Jiminy= conscience/ Archie= therapist.  With other people, it's like they had the best or strongest aspects of their personality stripped away: Snow= badass & brave bandit / Mary Margaret= mousey & unsure of herself teacher.  It probably depends on how much Regina dislikes someone, so using that as a guide, I give you:  Hook=brave, cocky, flirtatious/ Cursed!Killian= nervous, easily frightened and a washout with the ladies.  I'm thinking a cross between Leonard and Kuthrapali on The Big Bang Theory!

Or if we want to jump into the wayback machine, Barney Fife.  Deputy to Sheriff Graham.  As for a present-day job, he probably needs something maritime what with his experience and Maine being coastal, but I could see sports bar owner.  He knows his way around booze and testosterone-fueled situations.

Heh. I'm just imagining an exasperated Emma literally dragging along a nervous and frightened Cursed!Killian to fight a monster.

Emma: Come on! We don't have any time to waste.

Cursed!Killian: I'm not going near that thing! It's 100 feet tall and breathes fire!

Emma: Yes, and you're a master swordsman slash pirate who can help me defeat it. Now let's go!

Cursed!Killian: I'm a what?!

Emma: Son of a bitch. Just grab a sword and follow me.

You know, if a lot of fans want to see Emma pursue Hook for once, giving him a dorky cursed personality would actually be a good test to see how far she's willing to go to fight for him. It would basically parallel her parents, except she'd have to somehow convince the cowardly guy who's a washout with the ladies to fall in love with the badass savior who takes shit from no one. (I think I probably just described someone's fanfic... If not, someone needs to get on top of this.)

Although Regina did sort of seem to like Hook -- enough to have him try and kill her mother. Perhaps he's brave, cocky and flirtatious somewhere that isn't flashy pirate land. In that case, I could easily picture him as a bartender at the Rabbit Hole or something else would allow him to have elements of his personality while still being landlocked. Or you know, he could also be a male escort. Those personality traits seem to fit well. Of course, I've written two Cursed!Killian fanfics now -- don't give me any ideas for a third.

I think it was win-win for Regina as far as sending Hook after Cora.  If he succeeded, great, but if not no big loss.

I'm now picturing Hook as a male Mary Hatch from the alternate reality in It's A Wonderful Life...  And he loves books, so he could totally be a librarian like Mary!  :-)

I think I probably just described someone's fanfic...

I never actually wrote it, but the shy, dorky guy who can't get up the nerve to ask a woman to join him for coffee was the scenario I came up with for cursed Hook when we were discussing this at TWOP. Emma would utterly terrify him, especially if when she first approached him she didn't realize he didn't know her and she treated him the way she'd treat regular Hook if she saw him again after thinking they were separated for good (in other words, grabbing him and kissing him senseless). She'd keep dragging him with her to go face the bad guys, and then he'd surprise himself by suddenly rising to the occasion without thinking about it or realizing what he was doing, which would then freak him out in the aftermath when he realized what he'd just done.

You know, this is where they could have fun with the fact that Colin looks like an entirely different person and about ten years younger when he's clean-shaven. If they wanted to let his cursed persona use his natural accent, that would be perfectly okay (Whale has a different accent in his cursed persona than he has in his home world, so there's precedent).

I think Regina is pretty neutral with Hook. She can talk to him about being a villain, but I think she'd also be okay with throwing him under the bus to get what she wants. Regina, at the end of Season 3, is pretty pissed off at Emma for bringing back Marian, so I suppose one way to get back at Emma would be to give her almost-there-but-not-quite-official boyfriend a new personality downgrade.

Aha, yep -- I remember that conversation now. And I still totally want to see it play out on screen. It'd just be a lot of fun to see Colin go from one acting extreme to the other, playing an outgoing and brazen pirate in one scene to a shy dorky introvert in the next.

Yea, I think a truck would be good. It should be something with a big steering wheel, like his ship, and a stick shift. Although I can also see him driving a vintage sports car, cause it can go fast, and he seems like a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Although the engine would have to of been replaced with a newer one, because he might not like the loudness of it, since he's used to a quiet ship. Hmm I am thinking about this too much. :)

I've actually been wondering about Hook'd backstory and what he told Baelfire about how he was supposed to sail the world with his father before he was abandoned by him because he was a fugitive.

Got me wondering about the social status.  On my end, I always thought Hook might've grown up on the streets, but after the end of 3B, I really wonder if that's not really off the mark.  I mean his father could have been a con, but we know next to nothing about his mother (not that we know anything about the father either).

Just thought I'd see if there are any "theories" floating around regarding Hook's background.  I don't think you can get where he got if you have nothing to your name.

That is really interesting. His father abandoned them and yet the Jones brothers were pretty high up in the Navy. And we've also heard nothing about his mother. Is it possible that by young, he doesn't mean that young? Like maybe his parents disowned him after his brother died? Now that could be interesting....

They could do whatever they want with his backstory, but Hook being a street rug rat makes less and less sense when I think about it.  The king himself asked Liam to go to Neverland, if I understood Good Form correctly.  That's in its own is also interesting.  Though I'm sure the writers have forgotten a whole bunch of things and will write whatever they feel fits.

Also, anyone else notice the ship replica in the house Rumple and Belle are staying at (like they own it!).

I have that wacky theory that Liam and the Jones family were an adoptive family -- that he was abandoned by his birth father (possibly -- there were also all those lost prince theories that came out when the costume designer mentioned he was a prince, but that turned out to just be his Back to the Future disguise), wound up on the streets for a while, and then was taken in by the fairly high-ranking Jones family. That would explain both the street smarts and tendency to fall back on bad habits and the education, manners and status. And it fits with his rather extreme reaction when his brother died, if that meant he'd really lost everything, and it wasn't the first time.

One the reasons I didn't initially like Good Form is that is made no sense in terms of Hook/Killian.  A good backstory can have a twist that takes the audience by surprise but it has to provide a good bridge as to how the character came to be.  For me Good Form doesn't work because I don't see how Young Idealistic prim and oh so proper Lt Jones becomes devil may care pirate Killian Jones, who seems to have a lot of street smarts and could do slight of hand.  I think Pirates of the Carribean character Norrrington makes more sense, but it would not be what I would want for Hook.  I can see how  pirate Jones becomes Hook.  That makes sense.

So to help me get there, I read some fanfic and came up with my head cannons:

1) From Hey Brother fanfic (MAJOR SPOLIERS), which had a plausible background.  Liam and Killian were both abandoned.  Their mother was  princess married to a Naval Officer, but it was a marriage of convenience and produced Liam.  The mother falls in love with  Davy Jones another sailor and runs off with him, taking Liam.  When she dies shortly after Killian's birth, the father is overcome with grief.  So the brothers are half-brothers but don't learn that until much later.  The father does a bunch of stupid things and abandons his sons.  Liam is much older than Killian.  They spent a  couple of years on the streets, begging for food.  When Liam decides to try to get them a berth on a Naval ship as cabin boys.  The captain is willing to take Liam but not Killian (he's too young).  Killian pipes up that he's lived on a ship before with his father Davy Jones, not realizing his father was dishonorable man.  The captain had been in love with the boys mother so he takes aboard.  They work hard, as they have no home they stay on the ship when the others are on shoreleave.  Anyways, one night most of the crew is on shoreleave and the boys on on the ship.  They hear shouting.  The crew had been ambushed.  The captain was killed.  Most of the other sailors are injured.  Liam takes control and is able to pilot the ship to open waters; the first mate had been teaching Liam to navigate (There is a twist coming up).  Killian helps the injured crew man and he helps with the anchor and sails.  Because of his bravery, Liam gets commendation and a battlefield promotion.  Liam goes to the palace (his grandfather's palace) to receive the award.  Killian is left on the ship.  At the palace,  Liam learns the truth about his parentage.  It turns out the first officer was his father.  He feels betrayed and angry with the First Officer and he has mixed emotions about Killian.  He loves his brother dearly but can't help wonder what would have happened had his mother never left the palace.  He accidentally injures Killian, giving him the scar on his face while they are practicing fencing with real swords, which Liam knew better than to do.  Killian doesn't understand what has gotten into his brother. To Killian, his brother had achieved their near impossible dream of becoming an officer and this was the first step in building a good future.  Liam tells him the truth of their parentage.  Killian is hurt because he idolizes Liam.  Liam recognizes that he loves his brother.  From there, the brothers are given some of the privileges of nobility (able to get rank) but no recognition of their parentage.   The author stated she wanted to explain why Liam trusted the King so much and it also ties in nicely with Barrie's original work which hints at Hook being the illegitimate child of a noble person (literary speculation was that it was the Queen and Barrie fanned those flames).

2)  I think this is a mash up of two fanfics (can't remember the name) had Killian abandoned by his father alone.  Liam had already been  off to the naval school.  Killian ends up on a pirate ship as a child.  I think his father left him on the ship or his father sold him to the Captain for money for his escape.  Killian becomes the cabin boy.  The ship is captured and everyone including Killian is sentenced to hang.  He is still a boy.  Liam is at the execution and recognizes his brother.  He stops the execution  and pleads for clemency for his brother.  Clemency is granted but all others are hanged.  The fanfic doesn't delve into what happened next, but I assumed that Liam took Killian under his wing. If I were writing a sequel to this fanfic.  I would have Killian not fitting in with Liam's world initially.  Liam's friends would be upperclass and  see Killian as untamed feral child and talk about his bad form (lack of bathing, dirtiness, no table manners or any manners).  For drama, I would have Liam making a choice between marrying into a well to do family or keeping Killian.  In the end he would choose Killian, which would explain Killian's devotion and all the prejudice Killian faced would  fuel his obsession with good form.

3)  My headcannon is that Killian is abandoned at a port that is far from home in the Middle East.  His brother is already serving in the Navy.  I would have Killian barely escape falling into the hands of slavers.  Killian lives on the streets.  He is smart and a child so he picks up the language fairly quickly.  He may have runs in with a Flannigan type, explaining his street smarts and sleight of hand.   Anyway, one day, there is a English type gentleman in port seeking to trade but there is a language barrier.  Killian offers to help translate but at a price.  The Englishman is like a Marco Polo type who has been commissioned by the Queen to learn more about trade routes for better business opportunities. While he is in town, Killian helps the Englishman.  At the end of the stay the  Englishman and Killian work out a deal with Killian helping the Englishman with his travels in exchange for food and money.  The  Englishman calls Killian "Boy" or "the Boy" and they travel through the MiddleEast and Orient. Due to his privileged station, the Englishman doesn't think much about Killian's status and simply  refers to him as "Boy" or "the Boy".  Slowly they become close as Killian acts as the man's personal servant/butler type.  The man is a very learned man.  He works with Killian to translate non-English texts and comes to realizes Killian's intelligence.  He takes Killian to plays and sometimes they read the classics and discuss and debate them.  he teaches Killiian to navigate by the stars.  This explains Killian's extensive vocabulary, education, and his adaptability.  Killian is loyal, often negotiating great deals for the man and does most of the translating, and even saves the man's life.  When the mission comes to an end, the man has mixed feelings.  He does not want to leave Killian but is not sure what he would do with "heathen".   Ok the framework for this fanfic I was coming up with is: Belle finds the journal of the man and she is taken by his travels to unknown realms and falls in love (in a favorite character way) with "the Boy".  The Boy is learning and wants to become a man of honor, even though he has experienced very little of it except for the e man.  So the journal ends with the man finally deciding to take the boy back to England  and trying to decide on a "Christian" name for the boy, when the boy tells him his name is Killian Jones.  Belle is shocked and doesn't want to accept it but finally asks Killian to tell her the rest of the story.  Killian finds his brother. With the help of the gentleman and his brother Killian is able to attend one of the best schools of England.  He is a little bit of a celebrity, being that he went to these truly exotic places.  The gentleman dies and his estate is inherited by a distant cousin.

Some have argued that it was selfish for Milah to leave her home and family, and there's some truth to it. However, it also took a lot of guts to leave behind everything she knew for a chance at love and happiness. The man who fell for that woman is no misogynist. Hook isn't perfect, and he's got regrets, but that particular charge against him has never made sense to me.

I don't find "Good Form" to be problematic in terms of fitting in Hook's backstory and characterization. My headcanon is that when Killian was 7, Liam was older enough that he was already in their realm’s version of the Naval Academy. I think their mother probably died when Killian was even younger. Wee Killian was jealous that his big brother was off having adventures, so he was excited when their father told him they were going off on an adventure of their own. He had no idea it was actually precipitated by his father knowing that whomever he was a fugitive from was closing in. They had to leave right then. I want to think that Daddy Jones abandoned Killian because he thought he was protecting him, because he didn’t want Killian to be captured, too. Maybe he was running from Very Bad People. Of course, he also could have been (and probably was) just a selfish jerk.

After Killian was abandoned on that ship, he either had to act as a cabin boy until he could work off his passage to Liam’s location, or he was dumped at the nearest port. Either way, he had to survive on his own on the streets for awhile until he was reunited with Liam, either by hanging around the Naval Academy until Liam’s ship returned or by Liam discovering what had happened and finally being able to track Killian down. Thus, his sleight of hand developed as a way to steal for food. I figure Liam had already started making a name for himself and had some friends/patrons higher up the chain (hell, maybe he saved the king's life somehow) and so was able to get a place at a good school for Killian until he was old enough to join the Navy, too.

How big is Storybrooke? I find it impressive that Hook walked all around it to see that the ice wall was belting the town.

If they're going for a small village-sized town feel, it might only have a 2-3 mile perimeter. Still, Hook would have to run a pretty fast mile to check if it went all the way around in order to beat Charming and Emma in their car. (But now I have the great image of him sprinting around the entire town the second he gets off the phone with Emma, only to casually catch his breath before meeting up with her and Charming at Elsa's portion of the wall.)

What kind of car would Killian drive? I'm writing a modern AU, and I felt that a vintage truck would made a good vehicle for him. Any thoughts/suggestions? :-p

Motorcycle all the way.  Big, classic, like something The Fonz would drive.  Plus, it would go with the new leather jacket.  :-)

So just for discussion sake...During David's speech, he was going on about how this family doesn't give up on finding each other and so on, and the shots pan on Emma and Hook, Henry...is Hook including Hook in his family now?

Link to comment

Well, Hook was kind of in the shot by necessity. Which is not to say that David doesn't consider Hook part of the team now (albeit still a little grudgingly, I suspect), but this show is less than subtle -- if they had wanted to send the audience this message specifically, they'd have zoomed in on his face with a big flashing sign that said "HOOK: PART OF THE FAMILY."

Random thought that struck me in the middle of the night: Who, besides Rumple and Belle, actually knows that the woman Rumple killed whom Hook loved and wanted revenge for was Rumple's wife, Bae/Neal's mother and Henry's grandmother? I was thinking about this and couldn't remember, and I can't tell if that's something that's just assumed that everyone knows or if it's a cat that hasn't yet been let out of the bag.

As I recall, Hook told Emma on the beanstalk/in the giant's palace about wanting revenge on Rumple for killing his love and taking his hand, but did he mention that it was Rumple's wife? Do we have any indication that she's shared this info with anyone else, like her parents?

Meanwhile, I think everyone knows that Hook and Bae/Neal had some kind of bond because they knew each other in Neverland, and they know that this has something to do with why he's fond of Henry, but is anyone aware of the Milah connection? Hook just said his relationship with Rumple was "complicated" when saying why Emma should go alone to talk to Rumple in the past, and Emma knows that Rumple immediately tried to kill him. But now I've suddenly realized that I don't know for sure if Emma knows why Rumple would want to kill him or if she knows about Hook's past with Bae/Neal's mother. On this show, important conversations are always happening offscreen, so it's hard to tell who knows what, and I don't remember if that was ever explicitly stated onscreen or if there's been any indication of anyone knowing.

Very interesting ideas for Hook's choice of modern vehicle. Hook might ride a motorcycle, but on the other hand (har har), The Jolly Roger is a decent sized ship. So, I think he would prefer a car or a truck, but definitely something vintage. Wouldn't it be great if down the line, he did end up learning to drive and getting a car in the Show? His "mate" could teach him. :-p

Unfortunately, I think we're supposed to assume everyone knows about it by now. I just file it under "important conversations that should have been addressed on-screen seasons ago, but since the characters never talked about it when it was actually relevant, let's just assume they talked about it off-screen for the sake of continuity."

RE: Hook's automobile choice...

Hook might ride a motorcycle, but on the other hand (har har), The Jolly Roger is a decent sized ship. So, I think he would prefer a car or a truck, but definitely something vintage.

I could definitely see Hook driving a vintage truck, but a more practical option would be a modern truck (automatic, not manual). Especially a huge truck with lots of power that can easily tow a boat in and out of Storybrooke's marina whenever he and Emma want to go sailing on the weekends.

And I'd totally watch an entire episode where David or Emma teaches Hook how to drive! It would be a lot more entertaining and make way more sense than teaching Henry how to drive anyways...

I see Hook driving a vintage British sports car. A convertible and something with a wooden steering wheel.  Interestingly enough, I don't think the "bug" fits Emma's personality at all.  I'd like to see the bug go away at some point since it was Neal's theft to begin with.

I do think everyone is aware of the source of Rumple and Hook's feud.  I'm sure Neal could've filled in any blanks that anyone had.

Link to comment
I also think the VW bug should be replaced because of its origins.  Hook could learn to drive in it, and accidentally total it.  Then they both need new rides.

Pssh, the writers will never get rid of the bug. It belonged to a hero after all. Emma should feel honored to drive that thing, and she should also feel honored her new baby brother was named after such a hero.

But speaking of Hook, Emma, and that bug... I'm still really pissed off we never got to see any of that car ride from New York to Maine. Road trip episodes are always awesome - such a wasted opportunity, writers!

Okay, so it sounds like it's safe to assume that just about everyone knows about the full backstory with Hook, Rumple and Milah, but for the most part it hasn't been explicitly stated, so it wouldn't be a major continuity error for someone not to know.

The reason I was thinking about this was that I was doing some nighttime daydreaming during a middle-of-the-night insomnia spell (this kind of thinking is more fun than counting sheep), and I was thinking that we need a Captain Cobra Campout Part 2 now that Henry has his memories back and Hook could actually talk more openly about what he knew about young Bae. While Henry does now remember knowing his father, he still barely knew him and only spent a few days with him, and even kids who grow up with their fathers like to hear stories about their parents as kids, so I could definitely see him going back to Hook and asking to hear more now that Hook can talk about Neverland. Then it occurred to me that Milah is the only grandparent Henry never met, and if he knew about Hook knowing Milah, he might want to know about her. That's what got me started wondering if that's something Henry knew. But then I wondered how much anyone knows about what happened to her, if everyone knows that Hook's love whom Rumple killed was Rumple's (former) wife. And if Henry doesn't know, how much should he be told?

Realistically, I wouldn't want a kid having a relationship with someone who killed his wife, especially if those were his grandparents. But on this show, they act like it's a good thing for Henry to have a relationship with Rumple because he's family, and they don't have a problem with him having an adoptive mother who's a mass murderer. So if it's good for Henry to have a bond with Rumple, would they withhold what happened to Milah? Hook might, just out of consideration for Bae/Neal's memory, since apparently Neal didn't have an issue with his father murdering his mother, and he would know that Neal would want Henry to know his grandfather. Really, that whole thing gets pretty twisted if you think about it because no one has been allowed to act like any normal person would act. So I'm really not sure what Hook would tell Henry about Milah, his relationship with her or what happened to her.

Link to comment

As to what Henry might be told about Milah by Hook, how much does Henry know about not only mass- murdering Regina, but her individual dark deeds against his family?  Her having Snow's father killed, her mother killing Snow's mother, etc.?  I mean, doesn't he already know that his mother tried to kill his other mother, and grandmother repeatedly?  Maybe the story of Milah would not be such a great shock.  Although I don't know that Killian would be the one who would need to tell him, unless Henry asked a direct question.  Poor Henry.  So many of his ancestors were either murderers or murder victims.

Link to comment

I wrote a little Drabble once about Killian blackmailing Rumple for his hand by threatening to tell Henry about what Rumple did to Milah, so I could see it coming up at some point.

Link to comment

I don't think anyone but Belle has heard the full story. All we've seen onscreen is David hearing Rumple accusing Hook of stealing his wife and Hook stating that Rumple took Milah from him. With this show taking someone could mean many things. I don't think David would make the leap to cold bloodedly murder in a jealous fit. I always thought that David or at Josh plays David as seeing Hook as being wrong for running off with another man's wife and it's not in David to believe a man who professes to love his wife would murder said wife.

I think Emma might be the only one who deduce the true story, including that Milah is Bae's mom. It is also possible that Regina may have heard the story from some other villain in EF pre curse.

I suppose Cora might know the whole story. I think she would definitely know that rumple killed hook's love. The Question is if she knew Milah was Rumple's wife.

I have always felt bad for Hook because no one, even Bae, has shown any compassion or even basic sympathy for his loss.

I'm pretty sure at least Hook thinks Emma knows Milah is Bae's mom. Because in 304, he tells her that Neal got his drawing talent from his mother. So since Emma didn't go, "WTF, how do you know Neal's mother?" I think she connected the dots.

It is true. Other thing that makes me pissed is that everyone acts like being a pirate is the worst thing in the world. They don't do that with the evil queen or the Dark one. I don't know if they respect them because they are powerful or because they are "family".

I wish at least someone, whether Emma or Charming, knew about his naval past. Sometimes I think the pirate stuff is just for show. He's a noble knight-type man inside, but he likes to hide it under his wit and captain act. That's fine, I just wish Emma knew more about him. Right now, and she even said it in 3B, she really doesn't care about his past. But, I'm willing to bet there's parallels between hers and his.

Agreed, KingOfHearts. Maybe we'll get lucky and he and Emma can have a date where they just talk about their pasts - accompanied with actual on-screen flashbacks. Emma can open up about her foster care years and her bail bonds stuff, and Hook can talk about his dad abandoning him and his Navy days.
