I agree with everyone who commented positively on the image of Lucy on the floor in her own blood, just staring toward Carter.  That has stayed with me too.  I think the make-up is what made it so realistic and haunting (I say realistic, but in reality I've never seen a just-stabbed person).  Haunting describes it perfectly, as I think about it often and it always bothers me.  Her eyes are empty but knowing ... knowing this isn't good ... and her hair splayed out and all that blood.  Whoever directed that scene should be proud of her/his vision.

I just started the episode and saw that Laura Innes directed! Didn't realize that.

David Krumholtz is really good as Sobricki.

just echoing everyone else. I watched both episodes last night and was so impressed with how well they hold up. We love them not just because of what we think we saw back in the 1990s--they are still good. I loved how there is so much going on (like normal) in that episode pre-stabbing and they have so well established the Lucy/Carter miscommunication dynamic that you don't get the sense "I bet that psych guy is going to kill someone." If this was Grey's it would be so obvious from a mile away. And the acting across the board is so good. I teared up when Carter told Benton he was it was him. Kerry's reactions were so good. I could go on. I'm not huge Lucy fan but her whispered "thank you" gutted me.

ER has at least 2 get you scenes that have stuck with me (a) the Gant pager scene; and (b) the stabbing/Lucy reveal scene. I had trouble watching the stabbing. I kept somehow wanting to change the outcome.

I just saw the scene where Luka tells Kerry his wife and children were taken and then killed. But didn't they change that later? I remember him having flashbacks of coming home and finding his family after an explosion.

I saw that and I think they later switch his backstory. I remember the same thing about an explosion versus being taken. Generally ER is very good with continuity but I wonder if this falls into the bucket of Doug's child that he hasn't met from the first few episodes who seems to have been forgotten.

Another nice piece of acting is when Carter is actually being stabbed...he doesn't freak out or scream immediately; he just looks really confused until the pain sets in and he reaches back and then sees the blood. I imagine if someone snuck up behind you and did that your brain would have trouble processing what was going on. His confusion combined with the music pulsing over the scene makes it surreal.

Someone mentioned worrying about the dog being fed....there is just something so sad about that scene when he keeps talking about his dog. You realize there's a caring person under there but this sickness has taken over.

BINGO squares today....

Mitch Peleggi (sp?), Skinner from XFiles, was angry driver today.

Also Carl's granny from Mike and Molly was on today's episode.

Mark losing both parents fairly close together is sad (I know more time has passed than it seems, given this 15 episodes per week schedule, but it's still a short frame of time to lose both your parents).  But if his mom hadn't died, he'd have never developed this relationship with his dad -- his dad would have gotten sick in San Diego, his mom would have taken care of him, and Mark would have made sure the medical care was appropriate, called to check on his mom, maybe visited a couple of times, and then his dad would have died with them never having progressed beyond the distant, strained relationship they'd had to actually get to know each other and talk to each other about things beyond the weather and projects around the house.

Exciting BINGO card find: Randolph Mantooth as one of the policemen at the school shooting (I double-checked IMDb to be sure).  He was the co-lead on Emergency! (about EMT techs & firemen) which -- for all of you born after me -- was ER before there was ER.

Saturday nights when I was a kid.  And boy, I had a crush on him.

I had really stopped watching around now.  No Carol, Doug, or Lucy, and Carter on the downward slide from "optimistic cheerful doc" to "brooding self-pitying soap opera".

I'll pass.

I got to agree about Carter.  It seems the guy never got a break.  Right up to the end of the series.  Would it have killed the writers to give him some kind of happy ending?  Instead he got Kem and a dead baby.

Between Mark's final moments with his dad and Benton wrapping Carter up in a hug and kissing his head, I spent some time crying today.

I'm bummed they won't be continuing past season six, because I was hoping seeing the later episodes again would help me figure out when I quit watching; reading episode summaries isn't doing it for me.  And I wanted to see the series finale; I can't believe that I wouldn't have tuned back in for that, since I had watched the show for many years before drifting away, but not only did a detailed summary not ring any bells, I had no recollection of half the cast, so I guess I didn't.  Maybe I was on vacation.

I'll jump on the Randolph Mantooth love train.  I never missed an episode of 'Emergency!' when it was on.

I didn't watch the last two episodes of season six today.  Hopefully, I can catch them next go round.  BBC America is showing a marathon of 'Torchwood' and I've never seen any episodes, (I didn't get BBCA when the show originally aired) so my DVR is busy recording all episodes and I'm busy watching them a few episodes behind the recording tonight (and tomorrow).

One thing I do remember about the series finale was the show had actually reverted to opening credits [they had been stopped a few seasons prior, apparently], and the opening credits began with the old original cast [Noah Wyle, Sherry Stringfield, and Laura Innes [not an original but there since S2]] near the beginning with the other old characters thereafter mixed with the current cast. ETA: I thought Eriq LaSalle was grouped with the other original core at the beginning. Oddly, he wasn't. No clue as to why!

For all who missed the finale, here are those credits:

Huh?

I went off-topic, off-"ER" and referred to a comment made on an episode of "Dr. Phil", which I shouldn't have done.  "Cash me oussi.  How bot da?" means, "Catch me outside.  How about that?"

I temporarily lost my mind.

I think with stopping in Season 6 we will miss one of my favorite Benton lines--when he takes Carter to rehab and Carter starts to fight him--and Benton tells him, if you want to fight, fine but your ass is getting in that van.

That scene was on today, ending with a Benton hug and kiss on the top of Carter's head.  Very nice.  Benton escorted Carter to the rehab center and it showed them on the plane together.  Also very nice.

I remember the finale being pretty well done, but I forget details since I haven't seen it in a while. I seem to remember they had some callbacks to the pilot.

Re: Carter, I do wish he had a happier ending but he didn't die, so there's that! :) I do remember the episode when they lost the baby and my God was that sad. Good acting though, and the wonderful Michael Gross as Carter's dad showing up at the hospital right when he needed him. Nice moment.

I always loved when people called Carter "John".  It was usually women, like Chen or Anna. Or Gamma, I guess. :)

He met a woman Kem in Africa and she got pregnant. I can't remember if they married but they got a house together and planned a future. The baby died in utero and after that their relationship deteriorated. They separated I think. Then he got sick and needed a liver or kidney, can't remember which. In the end he got it and recovered. He opened some sort of center named after his son and Kem showed up and they talked a bit. It was left open ended on whether they got back together or not.

Thanks desertflower.  What was John (see what I did there?) doing in Africa?

I think he went to do a Doctors Without Borders type thing.

Also I forgot to mention Noah Wyle actually left the show for a bit. I'm fuzzy on the details, I just remember he was gone for a while then eventually came back.

Oh! Also forgot to mention when he needed the transplant it was actually Carol who helped coordinate it; but she did not know who it was for.

Link to comment

Yep, Carol set up the transplant but had no idea it was for Carter. (There was a short Doug/Carol scene. Nice of George Clooney to return one last time in S15!) And the hospital Carter had his transplant in...well, guess who was working there? One Peter Benton! So he visited Carter, who filled him in on Kem (and there was a cute exchange where Benton remarks how Carter married a "sister". Peter urged Carter to call her).

And I recall before the surgery, Peter was annoying the staff, making them review the procedure checklist. If I recall, something did happen and Peter had to guide them in helping Carter.

Susan and Elizabeth also turned up in S15 as did Kerry. I recall Carter giving Susan and Kerry a tour of the foundation, then after catching up in some bar with Susan, Lizzie, Rachel, and Kerry, he and Susan went, arm in arm, back to County with Rachel. It wasn't long after that a trauma came in, and it slowly panned out to the usual doings, but I did like Carter asking Rachel, "Coming, Dr. Greene?" With the wide shot of the patients, the El train, and life goes on and the end. As far as finales went, I thought it was pretty good. Oh, and Peter came for the Foundation opening, too, and there was a bone tossed to the Peter/Lizzie faction as they had an alone scene and chatted and we saw older Reese. And it was the same actor! His face didn't change.

One S15 episode (I did obviously come back that season!) that seemed to try and merge new with old was - I forget the episode title - where Angela Bassett's doctor character had met Mark Greene at County years before shown in flashback form (thus a way to have him back for S15, too. And Romano made a cameo in it, too!) when he tried to save her late son. So S15 basically crammed in as many old-time characters as organically as it could.

Jeanie also returned for an episode in season 14.

I will say, the last 3 seasons were enjoyable. Not as good as the first 5 seasons, but I did find them more enjoyable that seasons 8 to 12 overall.

Thanks WendyCR72, I had completely forgotten about Mark coming back in flashback. Also, seeing older Reese played by the same actor made me so, so happy.

Going back to guest star bingo for a moment. We have talked about the Top Gun trifecta of Goose, Slider, and Jester. Well I also realized there was a trio of actors from Sixteen Candles who appeared as well. Paul Dooley, who played Molly Ringwald's dad, played Susan's dad. Yosh was Long Duk Dong, and one of Anna's med students was played by Justin Henry, who was Molly's little brother in the movie. (He also played the kid in Kramer vs. Kramer.)

So glad I have an outlet for all the useless trivia facts taking up space in my brain!

Next Monday "ER" re-starts with Season 1, Episode 1 so I guess it's true that this is as far as we'll go.  I'm disappointed.  Any speculation on why POP is doing this?

Now for a question:  I'm watching "Double Blind".  An obese woman came in on a stretcher and the paramedics and doctors had a great time making fun of her weight.  I was only half-watching because I had to take a phone call, but was their a point in this?  I wasn't impressed by their ridicule.  Can somebody tell me if I saw correctly, please & thank you.

They were horrible!  Someone (Mark, I think) made one half-hearted admonition (a "settle down" type thing), but all in all it was a scene that made me profoundly sad to watch -- no, there was no point; it was totally acceptable, to the characters and to the writers, for everyone to mock her weight right in front of her, as if she was something less than a human being deserving of the most basic level of respect.  Nobody reflected on their actions, nobody learned a lesson, we certainly didn't see the impact it had on the patient to be scared and vulnerable and be greeted with ridicule rather than compassion by those she had to rely on to help her; it was just background "comedy."

Speaking of Celia Weston: Watching Peter's MS ep.  I love how, for the first 20 minutes, he's got a cartoon bubble over his head reading, "I'm in hell."

The part of me that was WAY too excited that Benton's karate chop was not only back, but back in the right spot (when the beat changes) is happy to assume they didn't group him with the rest of the old-schoolers for that reason alone. I think I said this earlier in this thread, but just that (with bonus Benton charging out of a room at the end of the credits action! ;)) made it worth tuning in for the finale after watching sporadically during the final season. Lol, I need help.

I did quite enjoy the final episode, the last scene was great, and they did a great job bringing everyone back for the finale and during the last season. I hadn't watched in years before that.

And I'm a bit late, but I have to throw in some SERIOUS love for All in the Family, including the cliffhanger in Be Still My Heart before that. I remember BSMH was promoted by NBC as having something crazy happen, and while watching with my college roommate, we became super-fixated on the kids whose parents died in the accident. We thought they were going to say that the son purposefully, like, yanked the steering wheel or covered his father's eyes, or somehow caused the crash (maybe that would have been the case in the later, vengeful helicopter years? ;)). The thing about Sobriki, for me at least, was -- sure, he was crazy, and I was convinced something bad was going to happen to HIM because he more or less fell through the cracks with everyone, and Lucy wasn't really in a proper position to handle his case. I was sort of thinking along the lines of what actually happened or could have happed later -- he leaves the hospital with no one noticing and either gets killed (he was hit by a car) or kills himself (the wife thought he might have gone to the roof of their apartment building). It never, not once, occurred to me that he would, well, do THAT. IMO, that was more shocking than the Gant situation, and DAMN was that shocking, and I think I have it tied with Green just getting straight stomped on in the bathroom. So well conceived and shot. Later that night, I got on my trusty dial-up and went to a message board that had absolutely nothing to do with ER, and the first thread in the off-topic forum was titled, "Somebody page Benton!!!!!!!!" Lol, every ER person on that forum found each other that night!

All in the Family is one of my favorite individual episodes of TV, period, and I would happily argue it belongs with the best TV episodes ever. It's just so well-paced, edited (including the use of music), written, directed, and acted. The first parts, through Carter and Lucy being sent up to the OR, are pretty much perfect. I'm going to try not to go into a full litany of the greatness, since I'd just be giving a detailed recap of the episode, so I'll just wrap this up the way I started and shout out Benton and Benton/Carter -- him flying down the stairs... "Is he conscious!? -- IS HE CONSCIOUS!!!!!!!" The "Aww man..." when he gets a look at the stab wounds. Him barely tearing himself away to go take care of Lucy. "I'm glad it's you." Carter figuring out Lucy died. And yes, the later scenes with Carter's intervention, the punch, and flight were amazing.

I have what I'm sure is a relatively dumb question that I remember looking up years ago when these episodes first happened, but can't remember/find an answer with a quick Google now...Carter is stabbed twice, badly, in the back. The entire time they are treating him in the ER, he's lying on his back (except when they roll him on his side twice to get a look at the wounds). How does that work? Wouldn't they, at least initially, need to have full access to his back just to try to close the wounds and slow up the bleeding? Are we supposed to assume that was done/attempted before they wheeled him into the trauma room (though his shirt was still on, so that's probably not the case)?

Count me with those not happy that they're only doing six seasons, but it's so great to have ER on TV regularly again!

You can't get to many of the organs in the abdomen through the back.  The kidneys are really deep in, but the renal blood vessels come off the abdominal aorta in the front.

One other little detail in Be Still My Heart that ramps up the creepiness....when Carter walks into the dark exam room, off to the right you can see just a glimpse of Sobricki's shoulder. Of course the whole shot of him in the corner is a shocking moment, but on rewatch just seeing the shoulder sends shivers down my spine!

This episode provides for some of the best acting in the whole series; the characters' reactions are perfectly written, and perfectly performed.  Especially:

Kerry - Her horror upon finding them, that she has to swallow back until they get them transferred from ER to OR so she can go outside and puke.  Her anger at having walked into a party, and no one knowing what was going on.  Her trembling when trying to intubate, and her brief moment of "this isn't how I wanted it to happen" hesitation when she gets to use her beloved sternal saw.  Handing the killer patient off to Mark.  Her face upon getting the call about Lucy's fate.  Being the one to cover her up.

Peter - Tearing down the stairs, around corners, into the trauma room and demanding "Is he conscious?!"  Wanting nothing to do with being called into the other trauma room, until he hears, "She needs to trach Lucy."  Being torn between the two rooms.  Needing to be calmed down by Anspaugh to save the kidney.  Wanting nothing to do with the other OR patient.

Elizabeth - Her face when she got the page.  Her frustration at needing to fumble her ID out of her purse in order to get through security.  Having to thin Lucy's blood right after major surgery, in order to deal with the PE. (I love the foreshadowing heading into the elevator up to the OR, that Mark tells Malucci not to squeeze the bag so far, because they don't want an embolus.)   "We wired the damn breastbone together."  Staring off into the distance at home.

Romano - Going from cocky, breezy, "We put too much time and energy into your training to lose you now" to all seriousness when he realizes she's thrown another clot, and then throwing a fit and trying to get Elizabeth to shock her again when it's time to call it.  Closing her chest himself after she's dead.

Carter - Turning his head after coming to in Trauma and seeing Lucy through the doors in the other trauma room.  "I'm glad it's you" to Peter in the OR.  "Lucy's dead, isn't she?" when Peter tries not to answer his questions in Recovery.  Every conflicting feeling he's ever had about her is written on Noah Wyle's face.

Lucy - Listening to the recitation of everything that happened to her, and wanting the trach plugged so she can whisper, "Thank you" to Elizabeth.  Mouthing "PE?" when she realizes what's happening, and not wanting the versed, so she remains aware of what's going on.

The killer patient's wife - Realizing he really is mentally ill, and really did stab two people.

Everyone at Doc Magoo's, sharing stories about Carter and Lucy, and then getting the news.

Mark having to keep the ER running - made harder by the fact they're down a doctor and a med student.

This scene, of Carter being stabbed and falling, to see Lucy already on the floor, has remained with me too since the first airing.  I was really REALLY impressed with Noah Wyle being able to convey that much pain!  I cannot really get over that...even all these years later.  And rewatching it confirmed it.  Then in the subsequent episode where he is waiting for somebody to leave his room so he can wince in pain...he simply NAILS it.  Good job Noah, good job.

Someone can google a POP article that I read that says that POP got the rights for all 15 years of ER. I think it said it was 331 episodes. So, I am sure they will eventually show them. Maybe the ratings are getting stronger as people become aware that it is on again so they are trying to hook as many as possible. When you think about it there is a whole generation that are just starting to watch it. Since Summer is slow on TV watching, maybe they will just repeat the first 6 seasons until Fall and then show all 15 seasons then. I am sorry but I don't know how to link to articles.

Edit: I just looked for and cut and pasted the part that says what I indicated above and it was from Deadline.com but it was mixed in with a bunch of shows that were picked up or whatever, plus this is the only way I know how to do this........"Pop also has nabbed exclusive rights to the full, 331-episode, 15-year run of ER. The hospital drama, which made stars of George Clooney and Julianna Margulies, quietly launched on Pop two weeks ago and has been delivering strong ratings."  As you can see this is an older article but when I started to see them start to repeat Season 1 again, I started searching and found this and it made me very happy as I am truly enjoying watching this show again. It's amazing how people survived without cell phones etc. in emergency situations.  I forgot how much I loved Mark Greene and I wanted him as my doctor.

Interesting to compare the sets from the "Pilot" ep of any series* to subsequent eps...

Biggest differences I've noticed so far: the waiting room (bigger in the pilot) and the break room, which is just...different.

Nice!Benton is back.  And he's funny.

Hey, Frank the desk guy is Carter's first iv.  Or someone who looks like Frank.

IIRC, the pilot for ER was actually filmed in a real abandoned hospital. Yep, I was right. A website shows screen caps from the pilot. And it was filmed at Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles.

After that, sets were apparently recreated.

If you could find your lunchbox, you could sell it & buy...well, a lot of cool things!

I'd love to go back in time and tell my young self not to trade in my original Barbie for the one with the twist&turn waist.  Goodbye grad school loans!!

It's been mentioned here & and in the Guest Star threads, that all of the Doctor parents were stunt celeb casting.  I guess nurses were left out -- 2 different actresses played Hathaway's mom, but neither were "knowns".

I had not realized that more than one actress played Hathaway's mom. Good catch.

Very bummed about them stopping at season 6, though I am recording episodes 4, 5 and 6 from season 1, since I missed them when this first started (and back in the 1990s, I did not start watching until episode 2). and 2. Carter's first trip to Africa & his being held at gunpoint.  Which IIRC was pretty riveting, if completely unconnected to the series!

Yet totally typical of the series, because they started fairly early on and then got hopelessly addicted to sending ER doctors (and Super!Nurse Carol) out in the field.

From the nine seasons Pop hasn't (yet?) aired, I remember, mostly in the vaguest of details, Mark dying (after Elizabeth was saddled not only with his boring ass, but his brat of a child and a new baby; there was some reconciliation in Hawaii (?) and then a moment with a balloon during the funeral limo ride for Elizabeth, Rachel, and Jen), Benton leaving and having a good final scene with Carter on a jogging path (?), Romano being stalked by helicopters, Susan returning and getting involved with some gross Donal Logue character who flew one of the helicopters, Kerry getting involved with a female firefighter, Carter's grandma dying and Mary McDonnell and Michael Gross appearing as his long-discussed but never-seen parents, Abby and Luka getting together (maybe; I'm second-guessing myself on that one now), and some new staff showing up played by Linda Cardellini, Mekhi Phifer, and Parminder Nagra -- no clue what any of them did, I just remember them existing.
