Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

@Gramto6 Make sure you really check them out. We got the freezer on top (which is what I need as I don't want to always be bending over for ice, etc). But the shelves are so...limited in height?? I'm *always* bending, trying to see what's hidden in the back of each shelf 🤬. Now I wish we'd bought the side by side.

We had a side by side for years. I really miss it.

OK, COVID negative but now random fever out of the blue. Which is odd (I think?) because I’m already on antibiotics for the next few days for a dermatitis issue (also random) and because I never even have as high as 98.6! I’ll just throw on here for good measure that my doctor is still trying to get my thyroid meds just right (that was also out of the blue with no symptoms). I’M FUN! And screw 2024 so far! Bah!

Yep.  Husband and I just picked up our thyroid meds.  His dose changed, mine remained the same.  He uses generic.  I use brand, $120.  Anyhow, people are also having weird health issues lately.  Eye problems, rashes, all of a sudden.  Fevers out of nowhere, etc.  Weird.  Something in the air?

Me too.  A few years ago, I bought freezer on bottom.  Big mistake.  I can’t bend that long anymore, so don’t know what’s in there.  Should have bought side by side also.

The only leggings in cold weather that I love are Cuddleduds. They're thin but warm. Kohl's is the only place I've found them and they come in one color...sort of black with a very fine gray thread running through. I'll have to post a link to them if I can find them (bought two more sets this past fall and might buy more). Also, Old Navy has leggings I like (I think I get the Jet Black) ones. They're a teence thicker without being "thick". Neither of these brands are shiny though.

LOVE Cuddleduds.  All my bedding is Cuddleduds.  So are my nitegowns, cardigan sweaters, etc.  So soft.

@annzeepark914  BTW, do you always buy your leggings at Kohls?  I’ve gotten them on QVC, mostly velvet stretch for winter, all dark colors.  Now I need for spring.  Light weight black.

Recently I've noticed that my vision while driving at night has worsened to the extent that I was worrying I might have to give it up, which I would hate and which would seriously impact my life (I live alone and do quite a bit of stuff out and about at night).

Today I finally got my new contacts after an eye exam a couple of weeks ago, and when I was driving home in the dark a few hours later I realized I wasn't having any trouble seeing, even in pretty bad rain.  Doh.

I'm hopelessly behind on this thread but here goes.

My night vision isn't what it used to be either but most of the problem is from contact lens glare and "halos" from the lights.  It isn't so bad with a pair of fresh lenses but the older they get the worse it gets.  Interestingly I just found a way to deal with that.  I found a pair of non-prescription distance glasses on Amazon in a very weak strength to wear with my contacts on at night that takes care of the problem.  So a little strengthening of the prescription really helps!

I'm wearing Cuddleduds PJs right now.  Home for 2 days with colonoscopy prep - ugh.

Re: leggings - my faves are from either Macy's or Kohls.  Both carry petite sizes so that works for me.  But I really like them.  Either Style & Co. or Sonoma.

When I am at my job as a customer service rep and customers try to tell me how to do my job. I had a lady arguing with me today, claiming I was providing her wrong information and complaining we wouldn’t listen to her. No, Karen, this is the correct policy and it has been the case for the last six months. You are not getting an exception. You have to play by the rules just like everyone else. I work here and have heard every excuse in the book as to why everyone thinks their case is unique and special. You are no different.

Someday I will be back out of customer service…

Yes... Kohl's is the only place where I've found the thin but warm leggings I love. So, they make bedding too? Had no idea. What style is for spring (in light weight black)??  I loathe giving up leggings once the weather gets more moderate ☹️.

Oh I share your peeve!  I had a fridge like that and I could never find anything and hated stooping down and digging way in the back. In a previous apartment I’d had a side by side. Now I replaced it with a French door top with bottom freezer. I love it. It’s counter depth so things don’t get lost in the back. I can see everything at eye level.
I don’t mind the bottom freezer as it pulls out and I can easily see what’s in it. I also got through-the-door ice!

My fridge died during Covid quarantine when everything was on crazy back orders. And the size of the space for my fridge is kind of odd, so I'm limited in what I can get that will fit and not block a doorway into my kitchen. The only fridge I could find that was available in days instead of months was a Samsung smart fridge. It's ridiculous, but it works. I'm still waiting for the day it starts making weird noises or totally craps out, based on internet reviews, but so far so good three years in. *knock on wood*

I know this says more about me and whatever my inexplicable issues are than it says about anyone else involved, but I just can't stand when someone comments just "yummy" under a photo of food. I hate the word "yummy" anyway, but somehow the lack of enthusiasm evidenced by the lack of punctuation and/or capitals really makes it so much worse -- if you just HAVE TO say "yummy," at least be excited about your friend's pizza or tacos! Speaking of friends, my friend finds this super-specific peeve amusing.

I'm sorry if I have mentioned this at some point over the years -- I'm sure I have.

My new fridge described above is also a Samsung.  After I bought it I learned there were bad reviews.  Oh, well.  Fingers crossed.

Mine is also a "smart fridge," in that it has a wifi connection.  We laugh at this.  Is it going to send us emails when we are low on milk?

Speaking of appliance deaths, my cooktop died last week.  It's less than a year old - we replaced our gas with an induction in March.  Since then, I've been limiting my stovetop cooking and working on a portable induction cooktop when I need to..  Good thing I have two ovens plus an InstantPot and a multifunction toaster oven.

I want to get rid of my oven altogether. I want to put a table where my current one is and put a convection oven/fryer and a two burner hob in it's place. I just don't cook that much any more.

I was lucky, I got a new fridge in 2020 right before they became harder to get.  I swear by Whirlpool, always have.  I never liked Samsung - saw the bad reviews.  We actually still have our old Whirlpool, which is over 18 years old and other than needing a new sensor a few years back it's been a super-reliable workhorse.  It's in our garage now and comes in handy for beverages and Costco runs.  Our new Whirlpool is a side by side (my preference).  It's the biggest one they make.  It's not a smart fridge but I still get emails telling us we need a new water filter.

How do you like induction so far?  We live in a no-gas area (on a mountain so no gas lines) and found out that installing gas for a stove in our house would be a little too expensive so I was thinking about induction.  The only drawback I've heard about is that I'd need an adaptor to use certain kinds of cookware.

@Yeah No, my weekend house has no natural gas in the area, so we have always had propane for the stove.  It's not that hard to install a tank.  A 50 gallon tank is filled twice a year.   You have to buy a stove that is ready to use propane (or some can switch between LNG and propane).  My nearby friend just got an induction stove, and it feels a little odd to me.  She likes it but it took getting used to.  She was building a new house, so it was wired for the induction stove.  As I understand it some induction stoves require upgraded electrical connections.  This could be another drawback in addition to the possible need for new cookware.  I have not heard of an adaptor for cookware for induction stoves before.  I'm going to look that up.

Beware, grumpy response regarding my own inexplicable issues ahead:

Since I hate it when people post (usually terrible) photos of the food they're about to eat, and find it completely obnoxious that they took photos in the first place, especially if I'm near by, I never even get as far as idiotic comments.

One good thing about renting is that the fridges are usually the basic freezer on top, fridge below.  No ice machine (generally the first and most expensive thing to go wrong), no inefficient French doors, no "smart" reminders, which I am sure would make me insane with the stupidness.

Back when I owned a home and needed to buy a fridge/freezer, I bought pretty much the cheapest (reliable) model I could, and a basic chest freezer for the garage for produce gluts and Costco runs.  I'm Jewish, so made myself clean both out once a year before Passover - great for eating up those blueberries you were saving for some unspecified event, and the unlabeled ziplocs of mystery meat.

I've had induction stoves for a while now (not by choice).  I don't mind them too much, but I don't like that they take so long to cool down, which is unavoidable of course, but annoying.  Also, once something boils over/burns, you can never clean the top properly.  It is also annoying that you can't get a really low heat, but I just got one of the steel discs and it works fine.

Our house is so fucking old, we had a stove oil furnace in the living room. We finally got rid of it a few years ago and I never thought I'd miss it but when to power went out in 2022, I would have killed to have it back. It kept the house toasty warm even when we had no power.

Here's a pet peeve: stupid, avoidable accidents that make you sad and mad at yourself for being careless.

I moved recently and finally got a piece of furniture where I can put what is left of my parents' "best china", which was used maybe four times a year, but was always on display in the china cabinet.  As I was unpacking it, I dropped a saucer, which shattered.

It should be said that I'm mad, but feeling petty, because I thought that when my mum moved into a residential home a few years after my dad died, the china was all packed up and stored in my brother's house.  It turns out all that was kept was 8 cups and saucers, not the beautiful coffee and tea pots or the cream and milk jugs, or the side plates.  My brother has tons of storage space.

This is the pattern:

You could always check Replacements Ltd  and see if they have the pattern in stock. I know it’s not the same as having the actual china, but if you wanted to display more pieces than just the cups and saucers…

Do you know what happened to the china?

I did look into replacements, but I think I'm just going to leave it and try to be the bigger person 🙄 and enjoy what I have.

Knowing my brother, I do know he wouldn't have thrown it away but would have taken it to the local Oxfam shop (where our mum volunteered for years, and where they now have separate locations for fancy/posh/expensive items), so I'm hopeful it went somewhere they're appreciated.

What I have decided is that I will actually use the cups and saucers I have, even if it's just now and again for a tiny cup of coffee.  How many of us keep too much stuff for best or to display and never actually enjoy using it?  I think there's something to be said for drinking from a delicate cup, eating off a beautiful plate, eating with cutlery that has a certain satisfying heft.  And if I save it for a couple of times a year but break something anyway, then what was the point?

I love the induction!  I have had no issues with using my Le Creuset dutch ovens on it - I thought it would be a problem at first, but since they're magnetic, it works.  And the induction is A LOT easier to clean! :)

I agree. Whenever I think of it when I’m making food, I will use a vintage Pyrex bowl or my green lemon-grinder thing (I’m sorry; I am completely forgetting what it’s called!) or my very-favorite-since-I-was-little Flame Chef cobalt blue casserole dish (it’s not the one that actually belonged to my mom, but it’s the same; I scoured the earth for it after neither parent had any idea where it got to over the years). I also move my coffee from its can into a mason-type jar and I scoop it with my lovely metal scoop. Using something special for an everyday event is such a simple way to make myself happy — and feel less silly for having a lot of technically unneeded stuff.

ETA: Jadeite lemon juicer! That’s what I meant!

I have china that I never use and did not want.  My mom gave it to me when she sold the house after my dad's death; it was an inheritance from my dad's family.  It was really important to her to give it to me, since I never married and thus never got china as a wedding gift.  It never dawned on her that I didn't want china, that I had no regrets about missing the opportunity to register for china, but knowing how she felt about it, I thanked her for it and even ended up buying a china cabinet.  (I had no room in my small kitchen for another set of dishes.)  She died a decade ago, so I could get rid of the china now, but I know how important it was to my mom that I have it, thus I'm finding that a difficult step to take.  None of my nieces or nephews want it.  Either I'll reach the point where I can package it up and donate it or my nieces and nephews will deal with it after I'm gone.

It could be worse.  I know someone who has 4 sets of china that none of her children want.  Three were inherited from her mother-in-law (her MIL's own set, and then a set the MIL inherited from her mother, and a set that the FIL inherited from his mother - both were only children) and the 4th set is the one she registered for when she married, at the insistence of her MIL!!  The MIL gifted her place settings and serving pieces every Christmas.

I do have some things from my parents that have sentimental value for me:  a cookie tin, a pie plate, a baking dish, and the one I use most - the jigger my dad always used when mixing a drink.  Some days 1 oz. is sufficient but then there are those days when the 2 oz. side is very handy!

I think it’s OK for you to clear out what you don’t want — and I say that as kind of a hypocrite who also has trouble with this kind of thing. But if you’re keeping it out of some sense of obligation, it kind of cancels out the good part of having it! And you have the memory of your mom whether or not you have the china. Could you pick out a piece or two that you might actually use and donate the rest?

I like this reasoning (re: the keeping it due to obligation that cancels out the good part of having it). I need to remember this so I can share it with others who are dealing with inherited stuff they really don't use/want. Thanks!

Yes, I meant propane when I said "gas", but it's not just the expense that's the problem.  We have logistical issues that would make installation an issue.  First of all, the tanks have to be placed outside the house and in our case the stove is on the wall adjacent to the garage, not an outside wall.  So that's problem #1.  That would be more easily solved if we had a basement to run a gas line, but we don't.  We could I suppose run it through the garage if that's allowed (not sure) but the tanks would sit on the front wall of the house because the kitchen and the garage are on the front wall.  Putting them the back of the house would be far away and again require putting a gas line through the garage to the opposite side of the house.  The garage doors face the side, so you couldn't even put the tanks on the side of the house.  So that's problem #2.  Also, the tanks can't be placed less than 3 feet from a window, so that's issue #3.  We decided it was too difficult and expensive to pursue.

That's interesting.  I went out and bought a single induction burner to try it out and found that it heats up and cools down instantaneously, and that's supposed to be the case based on what I've read online.  Also you can actually touch the burner when it's hot and not feel anything.  I've had an electric stove for over 20 years now and I've found the glass tops easy to clean if you have the right tools.  I use special cleaner with a scrubbie made for that purpose and keep my stovetop looking practically new that way.  Of course it does require some work to keep it that way, but in the scheme of things it's still much easier than keeping a gas stovetop clean.  The induction stoves I've seen have the same kind of glass tops.

Yes, I have a glass top on my electric stove and find it easy to keep clean (see above).  Much easier than a gas stove!  That's good to know about the Le Creuset as I have those and would hate to have to use an adaptor with them.  I got an adaptor for my single portable induction burner but I'm not that crazy about how it works.  That was about 5 years ago so maybe they've improved them since then.  I've noticed that a lot of non-stick pans now come with a metal base that makes them usable on induction.  I've bought a few but haven't pulled out the induction burner to see if they will work well with it.

That's interesting.  I went out and bought a single induction burner to try it out and found that it heats up and cools down instantaneously, and that's sburner to see if they will work well with it.

I was wondering the same thing.  Maybe the other one was not a real induction burner but rather just a regular electric burner under glass cover.  I grew up in an apartment with an old style electric stove (the outside metal coils), and you had to learn that the burners would remain hot for a long time after being turned off and might not look red/hot.

YeahNo, your house sounds challenging for a propane tank.  I guess electric is it for you.

I inherited my mom's Bing & Grondahl plate collection and did very well selling them at Replacements. That might've been because altho' they had Royal Copehagen (I saw them on display there) maybe they didn't have any (or much of) the B&G. I also sold her Bavarian coffee set. Now I'm trying to get MrP914 to  haul some other stuff there. If you get on the mailing list for particular china or silverwear, etc , that you're interested in, they send out a mailer showing what they have currently in stock and the prices (e.g., salad plates in your pattern, coffee cups & saucers, pretty canisters, tea pots, etc).

If you sell to Replacements, how do you send the stuff to them?  Isn't the shipping expensive?  Or did you actually drive it there yourself?  (as you mention hauling)

We drive to NC.

I like this reasoning (re: the keeping it due to obligation that cancels out the good part of having it). I need to remember this so I can share it with others who are dealing with inherited stuff they really don't use/want. Thanks!

Shelley Winters said "Never cry over anything that can't cry over you." Meaning possessions, not pets, of course. She was gifted a lot of things early in her career and she found herself getting kind of buried in "stuff", it was hard for her to get rid of a lot of it but she had that mantra, after all they are just things and there really is no point in getting your feelings all tangled up in them.

I was just called into the chiropractor's killing room (😬) when I'd started this post. The first time we went to Replacements, we lived in Raleigh. The second time we went we were living just outside DC and drove down. I did order a replacement for my dinnerware's dessert plate that I broke. They had it in stock and shipped to me. Yeah...shipping might eat up whatever you get for your stuff. You could tie it in with a trip to NC. It's near Greensboro. A trip to Asheville (Biltmore Estate) or check out some new furniture in High Point at the furniture markets...could be interesting.

When I was trying to get rid of my mom's china, I bought dish packs and mailed it to them from California.  They are very picky about what they buy.  I'm sure they resold it at four times the price, but I got rid of some of it.

The rest didn't sell at the yard sale either.

I've ordered a couple of plates and pieces of flatware from Replacements.  I'd never given much thought as to how they acquire their stock.  It makes sense that they buy used items, not just overstock from manufacturers.  But they must be in excellent or like new condition, I suppose.

I've also bought a couple of things from eBay.  Those are often obviously used, but I didn't care.

The fact that my landlord told one person next door to me that their tenant/kid/whoever he is that he can use the parking lot which belongs to the church that owns the house I’m renting…that has now been apparently taken by the next door neighbors to mean “our visitors can also park here.” My landlord told me to go move my car so the plow can come through tomorrow after it snows. I get outside and someone who’s visiting is not only parked there, but did a terrible park job and is parked over the line so I can’t even fit in the space I need. As much as I would have loved to have oops hit the door I knew I didn’t want to be tasked with paying for damage since the person who isn’t entitled to the parking lot to begin with and did a shitty park job would not be at fault.

I have already complained to my landlord. One night I came home from a hockey game and the lot was nearly full of their visitors. I am fine with sharing with the church since they own the house but I don’t think I should have to share the lot with anyone too lazy to park on the street because they think they have the right to take spaces from me. I wonder if these people go to other houses and just park in a driveway that isn’t theirs or their hosts because they think they’re entitled to it. Rent is expensive enough and I am otherwise happy in this house I can’t afford another $1,000* move because of this nonsense.

I had a really lousy day today so having the parking space I needed be inaccessible was the cherry on top.

*And yes a move that was 10 miles one way did cost me that much by the time you added in the U-Haul plus the cost of each mover and the labor. The movers did great but my life has been tumultuous with two moves in less than two years plus a layoff. I just want to settle in a place where I don’t have drama. My mom said she would rather me live with her if I had to move again, but for as much as I love my mom…I don’t want to do that.

This is kind of a pet peeve too, but as someone who largely enjoys being alone, I wish people would always stop trying to bug me to date or to have roommates on trips or whatever. I’m going on a group cruise in October (I know this sounds hypocritical but it’s through my church and you are not expected to like spend all your time with the big church group or anything) and was planning to book a solo room, as the ship has designated solo rooms at a particular price point without a single supplement. I’ve had two different people try to approach me about getting a roommate and ask if they could find me one. Like yes, I know you trust Linda and I believe you when you say Janet is a nice lady but I don’t know who they are and what if I don’t mesh with them? IDK I don’t want to spend my vacation sharing a room with Linda who I barely know. If that works for some people, then I won’t shame them and I hope they too enjoy the cruise! But like just leave me alone and stop trying to force the issue. I get the intent behind it since these people say “oh I am just trying to save you money” and while I appreciate the thought…I’m on vacation! I want to enjoy myself and retreat to my own room at the end of the day!

I brought this over from chit-chat - Speaking of cruising, I HATE it when friends who are cruise fanatics want to "convert" everyone who's never been on a cruise and go after you with the fervor of evangelists to get you to go on a cruise either with them or anyone.  They often will not let up on you and keep bugging you non-stop!  Somehow, (and this is unbelievable to me because until very recently he was never interested in going on a cruise), my husband has become one himself!   And this is in spite of the fact that he knows how I suffer from very bad motion sickness to the point that I've been on big ferries before and still felt sick and off balance! Last year I gave him my blessing to go without me on a cruise with his sister to Bermuda.  He had a great time, but even he came home with "sea legs" that lasted a few days.  Now he is on me again about going on a cruise and after me to find one I would be OK with, but I have looked at pretty much all of the options and none of them are OK with me.  I can't even take the medication to prevent motion sickness either, all of them make me even sicker, except ginger but that isn't enough for me!

@Yeah No Like you, I’m prone to seasickness. So a cruise is not something I’ve ever wanted to do as well. My neighbor calls them Walmart on the seas (he’s done one or two, but hated being on them). I think you were very kind to offer your husband the opportunity to do one with his sister.

I hate the conversion effect with other things too. I’ve always kept track of my budget and debts using Excel or Google Sheets (because so many budget apps require subscriptions which I can’t pay for when I’m paycheck to paycheck and trying to get out of debt), and so many people would try to convince me that I HAD to use YNAB (You Need a Budget) and it was so life changing and now they love budgeting and blah blah blah, acting as if a budget app made them a born-again Christian. I downloaded it once, didn’t really find it easy to learn and canceled my subscription. Like just leave me alone with my free spreadsheet. I know it doesn’t have a lot of fancy features but it did allow me to track my spending and list my debts just fine.

Thanks.  He has booked another cruise with his sister for next August but he booked a separate room this time because he's hoping to wear me down enough to go with him.  He has never been pushy about anything in his life, especially with ME so this is very out of character for him and I don't know how to handle it!

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'd hate cruising - I actually love everything to do with the sea, ships and the experience of cruising and he has booked with cruise ships that aren't as ginormous as many are so if it weren't for my seasickness issue I probably would like it.  That's the sad part - He doesn't realize how this bothers me because if I did feel like my body could handle it I would LOVE to go!

I have had friends that have tried to convert me to cruising and go with them that have been as annoying as he is.  But I have to LIVE with him so sometimes it gets even more annoying!

Over the holidays we got together with his sister down in NYC and my BFF came along.  Of course the conversation veered off onto the cruising topic and my husband and his sister wouldn't get off it.  My BFF eventually looked at me and said, "Now I see what you're complaining about!"

I would hate that too.  I have always kept my budget on a spreadsheet and it works fine.  If that makes me old school so be it!
