Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

Yeah, I still just use the old ones; they have all my reactions covered.

That's not the pride flag rainbow, that's the TV color strip from the Primetimer logo.  What the site's logo has to do with Thankful, I don't know, but that's what it is.

They really should have an icon that means WTF?  Now, that’s used often.

They don't offer negative reaction options here.  That's why I knew the fire icon couldn't mean something along the lines of "this post should die in a fire" or "this post makes me flames on the side of my face angry", which is how I'd interpret it if I didn't know that.

I still think the Mind Blown icon looks angry, like "my mind is blown by your stupidity" rather than "wow, that's so cool, it blew my mind".

I stick with the old ones as I don’t want to offend anyone with icons I know nothing about.  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it .. right?  We all have other things on our minds.  I want to enjoy, not wonder what these things mean.  Why complicate things.

I like the "thumbs up" and the "applause" ones and I've used the "wink" one on occasion.

Flies the primetimer flag out my window. Someone drives by and says Thanks to you too.

I appreciate them. I don't always want to laugh, cry, or love something. I kind of want a "rolls eyes" emoji.

Tbh, I don't know if I would ever enjoy traveling alone. That's one of those instances where I really wish I had a partner to experience such a special time with, but I think it's great to do it solo if it's fun for you.

Why not travel alone?  I would if given the chance.  You would meet lots of people with the same interests.  Give it a whirl.  You never know who you can meet.  Maybe someone with the same interests.  You can pick and choose.  Lots travel by train.  I would in a flash.  It’s exciting and romantic.

Kristen, if you travel alone, you may be adopted by a couple. I loved it, being alone. I have my interests and loved being able to choose my own schedule.

I can see the potential for excitement and romance, but they're by no means guaranteed. Even if you meet someone you're attracted to, there's this stranger danger thing.

I like to experience new sights with someone. I like to have someone to take pictures with. I like someone to share stories with. I like having someone to chat with on flights. There are MANY things I prefer doing alone. I mentioned shopping and nails, but also different classes/activities. There have been things I've literally kept to myself just so I could go to them solo, but I still haven't come around on traveling.

Now concerts on the other hand, I'm more likely to give a go on my own, at least if the drive isn't bad. Maybe the fact I'm alone so often (a single lady who works remotely), that when it's time for fun, I really yearn for a companion. It could just be my personality too. There are people who can barely go to the grocery store alone.

I am sitting in Edinburgh, Scotland all by myself at the minute, and I’m having a great time!  I wandered all over this morning, taking my time and just hanging out near Dean Village, before visiting the farmer’s market.  My peeve is that I don’t live here, and my hotel room has neither a fridge nor a microwave, so I was unable to take advantage of all the lovely meats and veg at the market.  I did get some fresh bread and cheese, which I’m having for lunch, but my second peeve is that this cheese will likely go bad before I’m able to finish it.

Or a good looking Stranger, lol.  When we went cross country, I didn’t see hubs for two days.  He was planted in coach, and I was in the panoramic car talking with everyone.  Lots of interesting singles, from different states.  Much more singles than couples. I don’t know about now tho, with Covid and all.

I've said I like solo travel, but there is something about shared experiences, and it can be a stranger. I can at times be gregarious and at other times very prickly. A companion who can deal with both is ideal. A side of snark is always welcome.

I always thought after the kids were out of house and settled, we would travel out of country.  It didn’t work out that way as things just came up.  Parents that needed help, medical issues, etc.  Plus, hubs was in Europe in the Army for two years, so wasn’t interested anymore.  Oh well, in my next life I would know better.  Those cruises down the rivers in Europe are very interesting .. stopping at ports in different countries.  If it’s safe, especially now.

Hmmm, let me see.  Travel or Walmart?  He would pick Walmart for a few dozen more golf balls in the house and hats.

That’s true also.  You have to be comfortable being alone.  Some like it, some don’t.  My girlfriend got tired of asking her husband, so goes alone now, but on tours with other people.  She’s tired of him dragging along and acting crabby.  She has asked me to go along with her a million times, but I rather be with him, even if he doesn’t participate and is grumpy too.  I don’t think I would be comfortable sleeping in the same room with a stranger on a tour.  I’d be up all night.  Hard decision for you.  Any cousins or close friends?

I’m mad at myself for not going alone to see Hello Dolly with Bette Midler.  I waited  and waited until it was too late.  She’ll probably never do it again.  I think too much.

That sounds lovely! Can you get some ice and a small cooler or container to keep the cheese (and future meats) in?

I used to go to movies alone, because it was dollar Tuesdays. It was a multiplex, with around 12 theaters. Now I go and sit in the comfy recliner with other greys, with like 10 of us.

I read this wrong. Can you smuggle in a small cooler with me curled up in it?

I’m only in Edinburgh for another day, then I’m with a small tour group (of mostly strangers!  And I’ll have a room to myself!), and there won’t be much extra space.  But that is a great idea — I can certainly look for a small cooler.  I don’t think my hotel has an ice machine.  There’s no ice bucket in the room. So that’s another peeve, since this is the peeves thread.

I'm sure you'll figure something out. Heck, if you buy a bag of ice (this seems like that may be a very "American" thing) you could tear it open and put the cheese right on it.

My peeve is that since my life is in limbo I've been hesitant to schedule a vacation. was going to take a solo cruise earlier this year but I figured I'd have a new job and wouldn't want to take that trip early on, or have that trip cost me an offer.

Oh luckily I can easily travel with someone. :) I've actually turned down many trip invites, especially to Vegas. It's the concerts where my family/friends aren't always into the music or available.

If I was younger and in better shape, I’d say “ let’s all of us meet in London” and see Europe together.  Wouldn’t that be a hoot?  Wishful thinking.  In my dreams.

Does it have to be London? That would be fun though. I have areas of the UK I want to see.

My two married daughters are going to their third concert in a row this very night in the City.  Their husbands are not interested.  Good for them I say.  Get out while you can.  I’ve been to Vegas many times since my brother in law lives there.  Since I don’t gamble at all, I’m not really interested to go there.  I’d rather go to a museum in my City truthfully.  Or a play.

I don't really gamble either, and not into a lot of the stuff my friends are into (clubbing, strippers, hanging out at the pool). But I do love me some Vegas because there are nonstop shows and other things to do. It's fun just wandering around seeing the weirdos. lol

Vegas has changed so much over the course of my lifetime, and I don't enjoy it like I used to.  There are so many obnoxious clubs now!  Being just a four-hour drive away, I used to do a long weekend there every couple of years, but I don't remember the last time I was there.

I’m happy just getting out of the house.  In the park, library, mall, anywhere.  In Vegas, at least we went to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.  I wanted to see some Ghost Towns, but I couldn't get you know who away from the slots.  We don’t have much in common.  Never did, but love at first sight.  🥰

Exhausted from watching the late night screening of Jurassic World Dominion, plus slipping on the pool deck, hitting my knee and falling into the pool on Friday, achy so I succumbed and just ordered some Indian food. It’s hot and so the food is what we call street food and yummy.

We live nearby, but never went.  I need some scenery as I don’t gamble, so we ride to Orient Point and take the ferry to New London, then go to Mohegan.  He plays awhile, while I look in the shops.  Haven’t been in three years.  We are due, if it’s safe.  I love the ferry and Mystic.  Great fried shrimp near the water at Mystic, plus the Village is nice to walk around in.

Oh I love Orient Point and that whole end of the North Fork area. A couple of years ago we rode our bikes from Mattituck  to orient and back. Beautiful ride but my heinie was very sore after that.
As for that casino, do not go. We once stopped in briefly for curiosity’s sake. It’s very creepy. All the games are digital. They have animated dealers for blackjack, for example. Just bizarre.

You are very brave.  The road is very narrow for bikers.  It’s beautiful out there tho.  Love Greenpoint too.  Lots of traffic now.  Strawberry festival at Mattituck this weekend.  Bumper to bumper.  My husband won’t go to Jakes.  He said too many scrubs.

Mattituck, ferry to CT... your're waking up old memories I have of our vacation with family friends years ago in Mattituck. Then we took that huge ferry to CT to visit more family friends. This was back when you passed acres and acres of potato fields on LI, driving from Westchester to Mattituck. I hear the potatoes are gone now, replaced by vineyards.

Currently watching the Astros/White Sox game on ESPN. An Astros player hit his first career-hit as a home run. Some high school kid/twentysomething caught the ball as it went over the deck. Yay. Good for him. Except the next time the ESPN cameras found him, he was holding the ball and filming himself on his phone. Probably an Instagram or TikTok.

How is it that I'm so hopelessly out of touch and out-of-date in my thirties? Why is that the first instinct of anyone when something happens, to film it and send it out to the internet and millions of their closest friends? How did that become a thing?

It was a rookie's first major league homer. I saw the guy there ready to get the ball from the kid. I wonder what he bartered out of it? A bat autographed by Altuve? Cash? I'm sure he got something good. 😃

At least he waited until afterward, instead of seeing the ball heading towards him and whipping out his phone to document the moment rather than just naturally experiencing it (and thus probably, which would make me cackle for hours, failing to catch it) and later posting about it.
