Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

I haven't noticed the loud phone conversations too much - most of the time people who are glued to their phones IME seem to prefer texting.  But what drives me mad are the people in public places who think everyone else wants to hear the game they are playing or the movie/tv show they are watching.   I've actually gotten up and left places when this has gotten out of hand.

I had to email my son's teacher to get an alternate assignment for him.  They're working on 100s in math right how and for the week, they're supposed to make 100 snowballs at home.  We live in a condo.  We don't have a backyard where we can make 100 snowballs.  I get that we are probably the only family in a condo, but please offer indoor work in the winter!  Some people are also not fans of being outdoors or are TIRED of being in the snow after having to spend more than an hour outdoors clearing the driveway!

note:  assignments are turned in virtually - students/parents upload photos of their work onto an app/portal for their teachers.

@PRgal - does the assignment say they MUST be made of snow? I would've cut out 100 paper snowballs & sent an image of that.

The teacher specifically wrote that with all the snow we've had over the weekend, it was the perfect chance to make them (the alternative she posted was to make footprints and mark them with food colouring.  We can't mark footprints with food colouring at a park.  Plus many are smudged and it's a lot easier to lose count).  A LOT of the kids' assignments are outdoor centric.  I get that Grade 1 homework is supposed to be fun, but at least offer an indoor alternative upfront so we don't have to email you!

I've been trying to work off this restless energy, and I'm looking forward to 45 degree weather, in a week.

I hate how easily I forget things, though. I'm finally making more potato soup, but I forgot that I had it simmering, and was supposed to be stirring it frequently. Dad walks in, and says, "Oh, no, Angela's in the kitchen again."

"Yeah, I'm cooking, I'm making soup... oh my god, I forgot about the potatoes!!"

I start the day with two hour intervals and they get longer as the day goes on.  So that isn't a bad approximation.  They are supposed to all be more mini-meals so snack isn't quite enough.  I just thought it would be funny in light of our discussion of what meal is what name.  I do like the idea of calling one of the last three of the day tea.

Make one of the morning ones "elevenses"

And another can be "recess"

When you order something online and the business is quick to put a pending charge on your account and then conveniently tells you your order is delayed.

I ordered a laptop from Best Buy yesterday morning and their website said I could have it by today. I liked the model and thought the shipping was a good deal so I place my order, I got a UPS tracking number, etc. This morning when I’m checking my emails? They let me know at 3 am that my order was delayed and that I should get it between Friday and Monday. And they won’t let me cancel the order but expect me to wait until March 6 (!!!!) for a refund and a cancellation if it doesn’t ship which they claim is “unlikely.”

I’m sorry. But who can be without a laptop for almost two weeks in this day and age (there are way too many risks with using a public computer for me to find one to use; I will only do that for impersonal tasks that I otherwise can’t wait several days to do) and how is it acceptable to say I need to wait two weeks for a delivery before I can request a refund? If anything I should have that option available to me if I don’t have the computer in my hands by this coming Wednesday. Telling me it will be two weeks before they refund me when they printed a shipping label and put a charge on my bank account is ridiculous. I know it’s only pending but guess what, I still can’t use the money! 🤬

Oh and when I looked on their website they are still saying if you order the computer today you can have it by Saturday. I guess they only bait and switch after you order and they hold the money

Remember those ice storms I was peeving about a couple of weeks ago?  I just got an estimate for cleaning up the downed branches and tidying up the broken ones still barely attached to the trees.  $5,000.00.  Unfortunately, this is not something I can do myself -- some of the cleanup will require a bucket truck, and some will require a big-ass chainsaw, and some will require both.  The only "good" thing about it (and I use that term loosely) is that they can probably get it done by the end of next week.

Isn’t that the kind of thing your homeowners insurance would cover? Or is this one of those deals where, because of high deductibles or fear of rate increases/non-renewal, it’s better not to get them involved?

I really loathe that cheap-a$$ Jeff Bezos. All of the books in my Kindle "library" are gone. We certainly didn't get much of a warning.

So far I haven't noticed any changes to mine but I've also just cancelled two pre-orders and have decided to purchase them in paperback when they are released.

I am also (as a Canadian) looking into purchasing a Kobo - our version of the kindle - and using that going forward.

Bezos is already getting as little of my money as possible, but if he starts messing with kindle that is the straw that breaks this Canadian's back!

What's he doing?  Making content unavailable?

I'm on a news blackout, or I'd look it up myself.  But I'm interested because if that's what it is, it's also what I hate about streaming--anything there can vanish, with or without warning.  I really do think it adds to the increased feeling of anxiety these days.  Not to mention wondering if you're losing your mind:  "I swear I had _____ somewhere on my streaming but I can't find it anywhere."  When yes, it was there, but they took it away without telling you, leaving no trace.

I only checked the Kindle app on my Tablet. Just checked the Kindle app on my phone and my "library" appeared!  Strange 🥴

I've just read that kindle apps won't be affected, but I want to have control over the books I actually own. I hate this - that anything digital can just be deleted, because we don't have full ownership of it.

I'm confused.  Where are the e-books disappearing from?  I have them on my kindle, on my amazon fire and also through an app on my laptop.  So far all three seem fine.

I’ve been purchasing ebooks for decades from defunct sites like Fictionwise and BooksOnBoard plus others like Baen (who have always been DRM-free). Because of that I began using Calibre many years ago to store my purchases so I wouldn’t lose them.  I still lost some very old MSLit format ebooks that I didn’t decrypt in time but my Kindle ebooks up to now are saved on my computer. I’ve just cancelled two Kindle books I had pre-ordered for later this spring and will start buying from Kobo or other places that will allow me that control. I’m just happy I wasn’t in a mad panic like so many others I’ve seen trying to download years of purchases in just a week!
