Small Talk: About Big People

Roxane (one "n") Gay was on This American Life last year.

She's like the anti-Whitney: intelligent, self-aware, and honest. From the People article:

Quote

At the heart of Gay’s discomfort—and why she would like to be smaller—is a desire to feel healthier and move through life more easily.

“It’s about how I feel in my skin and bones, from one day to the next.… Nearly everything physical is difficult,” she writes in an astonishingly honest memoir, Hunger, excerpted exclusively in this week’s issue.

“When I move around, I feel every extra pound I am carrying. I have no stamina.… More often than not, I am in some kind of physical pain.… The pain can be unbearable.”

I am halfway through Hunger and am enjoying it for the most part. However, it swings wildly from "I eat because of my past, I am miserable and ashamed, my body feels heavy and terrible" to "being fat is not unhealthy, there is too much anti-fat propaganda, the obesity crisis is not real" and back again. I am just not sure at this point in the book what her message is, although she is a very compelling writer and I am reading her book very quickly.

I'm getting the book tomorrow from the library, although I noticed that inconsistency also in a few comments that Gay made in an article or interview recently.  In that,  being morbidly overweight is painful, but it's ok and should be accepted as a personal prerogative, because we don't know the phys/emo issues that causea the weight gain.. But she says obesity limits a person's freedom for many actvities, as well as "fitting in" airplane seats, any chairs with arms, or any chairs that are not strongly-built, getting in and out of vehicles, etc.

Gay also maintains that fat-shaming exists because, for some reason, people have no boundaries or compunction in telling an overweight person not to eat something,  or inform them that they shouldn't be eating/doing x, y z, etc.

It swems that Gay is mainly concernedwith reconciling her pain-transformed-into-fat phys/emo health issues, and  championing the need for acceptance and sensitivity from the masses.

I ll read it and get back online in the next few days.

The small talk thread for the Previouslies is called the "Red Carpet."
Now to me, a red carpet demands glamor shots of the contenders, and Whit is up for "worst episode in a reality."
One of the other nominees is James K. of 600 Lb Life, who'll need one with his best sheet on.
But you can't have a red carpet without glamour shots.  Am I right?
I'm having trouble inserting a photo.

Will this one do?

Sure, or if you have something tackier, that would be good too.
Will you post it please.  I've done things before, but the shot I tried (of James K.) didn't work.

Thanks!

Well, there's this one, if you want tackier. Or the following one if you want super tacky. :)    Where do you want me to post it?

She is really bad at looking sexy. She is so bad at it, I can't be certain she is trying to do it.

I don't think she's poured herself into that outfit to pose looking puzzled. :-) Maybe that's her idea of sexy? "Oo, where does this go?"

Or maybe this is sexy-forgetful? "Wasn't I supposed to have a whip or something?"

Where in the world did you find these? I am laughing my ass off at the "sexy" poses. You couldn't have found them on her FB page, could you? There she only posts pix that are several years old head shots so her rabid fans can tell her how beautiful she is. Even the nuttiest of those wouldn't find these photos "inspiring."

And don't forget the folks who say "OMG your face is looking so much thinner!" To a headshot from years ago. Where her head is just as fuckin' round as it is now.

I zoomed in to see if her leg was in fact swallowing her knee--it is--and I was horrified to note that you can see her areolae. WHY??

So AZChristian, I got the impression on the red carpet thread, that someone was expecting more worthy contenders than James, and no doubt won't appreciated Whit either.
Culture shock.

The one with the leopard tights look like she just passed gas and there was nowhere for it to go, so it expanded the top of her tights.

Hah!! Truth. Also, her boobs look extremely flat in that one. Why would any woman, big or small, put on an outfit that makes your gut look bigger than your boobs? She has no clue how to dress. She needs to talk to some of the ladies from My 600 LB Life who, even at over 500 lb, could really put an outfit together.

I'm mildly intrigued by how small Whit's boobs are relative to the rest of her. Most obese women I've seen carry a lot of fat in that region. I'm a third of her size but when I gain a bit of weight some of it always lands on my chest (and some on my butt and some on my thighs, et cetera...). As we've discussed, a huge percentage of Whit's excess is south of the equator. Funny how fat behaves differently on different people. I wonder if there's a scientific explanation. Now I've spent too much time thinking about Whitney's boobs and must get coffee.

She posted somewhere that her boobs are not very large, so she wears standard sports bras rather than needing special ones for bigger people.  So if they're already small(er) and she's forcing them into an even smaller bra . . . well, that would explain it!!!

Now I'm staring at the picture trying to figure out whether her rib cage measurement could possibly be a standard size. If so, her proportions really are off kilter. She must have to stretch the living hell out of those bras though.

Dita Von Cheeze. I wonder even if she could manage to get those feathered mules on her feet and stand provocatively even with help. I never got a good look at her bare thighs before either. Oh boy.

Yeah, because even though they're slip-on, one would be more successful if one could actually see her feet while putting them on.

Instagram, Google Images, British tabloids (they were obsessed for a while with posting tongue-bath articles about her, accompanied by the most unflattering photos.)

Whitney posing in a two piece swimsuit, followed by Whitney attempting to get into a pool in said swimsuit:

It is amazing to me how much suspiciously thinner she looks in the posed picture than in the candid shot. Like at least 75 lb. She really does put the BullShit in "No BS."

omg - that woman is absolutely doing feeder porn. No other reason to post like that. Wonder if that will ever come out on the show? I keep thinking of that "hungry bunny" bit when she was in the park supposedly shooting the workout dance video.

I loved the pictures, but apparently a lot of people didn't consider the awards a fun thing.  After posting James' photos, I felt as if I'd farted in church.
Everyone was taking their shows tres seriously.
Do you suppose this show, or 600 lb, has a redemption arc?

It's hard to believe someone is more obtuse than Twit. Maybe there should be a contest with all these "body positivity" advocates: who can weigh the most before she dies.

That's the thing about "body positivity," feeling good about your body is one thing, but having a healthy body is something else entirely. If someone's only priority is feeling "good about" their body, then knock yourself out (for as long as you can even survive), but don't delude yourselves into thinking that you can literally be healthy at any size. At a certain point, the excess body fat changes from being a risk factor for disease to being a stand-alone disease. It chokes out your vital organs.

There was a woman in a smaller Arizona town near us whose goal it was to become the world's largest bride.  She was at 800 pounds, pushing to get to 1,000.  Then her two sons convinced her to lose weight for her health.  When she got to 450 pounds ("I felt so tiny"), the fiance - a chef - dumped her.  Fortunately - although she is on public assistance - she makes her money doing feeder porn, so she found another chef who wanted to marry her.  Even more fortunately, she dropped off the radar in 2013 or so because sensible people stopped reading about her.  IDK what has happened to her since.

This is the best explanation I've seen about the "healthy at every size" argument. Our bodies simply aren't built to handle 300, 400, 500+ #s. The day I awoke to that fact I could literally feel my organs shutting down.

You all might like this article. I am familiar with diabetes ( from an education standpoint, I do not have it) but this really puts into perspective the danger of diabetes.

I think the public in general doesn't understand how serious diabetes can be, even if they have T2)  this is a good article(IMO) that explains it. T1 diabetics (IMO- I know several T1 diabetics) usually have a better grasp on the severity of diabetes and manage it.

Went to see Roxanne Gay speak last night about Hunger, and other topics.  She was just wonderful. Funny, incisive, and sooooo fucking intelligent.

She said she hatewatches My 600 Lb Life. Glad that Biggest Loser was canceled.  Feels that fat peopje are shown as objects of pity and  crude sideshow displays.  I didn't want to waste her time by asking abt Twitney.

Says baritric surgery had 5% success of keeping weight off, although she still considers it. Not critical of it, but mainly wants people of all sizes to not be verbally bullied --by strangers and family.

She trained her parents to not mention her weight, by hanging up on them when they started on that line,  which she said was up until 2 years ago, and she's 42 years old.

The facilitator stated beforehand that Roxanne does not allow people to offer advice on weight loss, OR want to listen to their painful weight or abuse histories because she had enough difficulty still struggling with her own.

Roxanne then mentioned her own work through therapy for abuse, etc., issues, and knowledge of evey fucking diet and nutrition and exercise that she said most  fat people KNOW ALREADY.

The plethora of available cheap, junk food and emo issues are tough to resist.

I read her book already and just want to soothe her. But ultimately,  she and close friends and family can only do that herself for healing

Tomorrow, 8/7, at 4:30 AM ET. TLC is showing an episode of Strange Love, with a woman with 99" hips.
Any idea what Whit's hip measurement would be?

We know that in season 1 she was measured for a plus-size fashion show and her 60" tape measure didn't come CLOSE to fitting around her ass. It was at least a foot from touching.

On a totally opposite of Whitney note, I did a Spartan race a little while back and it changed my friggin' life around. I'd always been just a walker, but I got inspired and have started training with obstacle courses in mind, and I am getting hella-ripped. Eating enough to maintain my muscles but not so much that I can't burn fat. My body is responding. Shocking how that works, WHITNEY THORE.

Season 1, episode 3, Todd measured her breast size as 52, waist as 50, hips as 70 inches. That was about two and a half years ago, so at this point, who knows.

Interesting site; thanks for posting it.

There wouldn't be any way it could include MBFFL since there has not even been any filming yet. If that show is coming back, I don't think it could happen as anything but a summer replacement, 2018.
