I'm not sure if it's the writing or if John Hamm simply doesn't have the comedic chops that Chevy Chase has. I may change my mind, though, with a 2nd trailer or if it's getting good audience reviews. Just watched it on Paramount Plus and enjoyed it. It's not quite as comedy forward as the original, but it's still witty. Hamm definitely doesn't have Chevy's timing, but his Fletch feels more like a real person. The movie is only 90 minutes so it's an easy watch, I highly suggest checking it out. 1 Link to comment

Anduin September 1, 2023 Share September 1, 2023 Barbenheimer. No, an actual movie called Barbenheimer, from Full Moon Pictures. Here's the premise. Quote Deep within Dollsville, a group of fed-up female dolls – led by the brilliant Dr. Barbenheimer – build an atomic bomb. Their mission? To bring down the patriarchy once and for all! But as the battle of the sexes swells, will Barbenheimer and her bevy of beauties end up blowing up more than they bargained for? It sounds amusing. Any good? Who knows? We'll see. 1 Link to comment

Anduin November 29, 2023 Share November 29, 2023 A sequel to This is Spinal Tap, with the original cast returning. I'm somewhat skeptical. Why mess with perfection? What more could they bring to portrayals of geriatric rock stars that hasn't been done to death? Will they have moved on with the times and built a continuing fanbase, or are all their fans ever-ageing boomers? Still, one potential joke comes to mind. This time they mix up feet and metres to build a Stonehenge too big to fit in the club. 2 Link to comment

Anduin December 12, 2023 Share December 12, 2023 Technically no movie is essential viewing, but some seem more surplus to requirements than others. Case in point, Demolition Man 2. Nothing is known about it, other than the original writer is coming back. Yeah, Taken kicked off a run of old action stars king ass again, but that sort of trickled off a few years ago. Now I think about it, the original Demolition Man was sort of the reverse Captain America. Hero receives a one-way ride to the future, has to cope with the strange ways while being dragged through an action story. Only, his time was rather less civilised and polite. There's jokes to be made about 'woke' culture, everyone's rough edges being smoothed off. But I'm not sure it would actually be, y'know, funny. Link to comment
Anduin March 23 Share March 23 A new Boondock Saints movie is planned. It has the original two actors on board, no writer or director. Anduin April 1 Share April 1 Upcoming Daisy Ridley movie, Cleaner. Quote Criminal activists hijack gala, taking 300 hostages. One extremist plans mass murder as message to world. Ex-soldier turned window cleaner Ridley works to rescue the hostages. So it's Die Hard with Daisy Ridley as John McClane. It's directed by Martin Campbell. He's a good action director, which is promising. I haven't seen any Daisy Ridley movies outside Star Wars, none have appealed to me. Is she good when she isn't using the Force? 1 Link to comment
Anduin April 5 Share April 5 Two surprising stories. First, Olivia Wilde is directing an Avengelyne movie. Who the heck is Avengelyne? A comic from the early 90s, one of the 'bad girl' books. Plenty of T&A, violence, flashy visuals, I doubt anyone bought it for the storytelling. Designed to appeal to adolescent boys. I certainly flicked through a couple of issues in the comic shop, but I don't think I ever actually bought one. Why is it becoming a movie now of all times, when the superhero genre is apparently cooling down? I have no idea. Second, a new cut and rerelease of Caligula, starring Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren. It's an interesting movie that for various reasons got some boring and pointless porn shoved in here and there. A cut that only keeps the needed nudity might be pretty good. Link to comment
tv echo April 10 Share April 10 (edited) Current release date: Jan. 31, 2025... Bong Joon Ho Unveils Irreverent First Trailer for Robert Pattinson Starrer ‘Mickey 17’ BY AARON COUCH APRIL 9, 2024 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/mickey-17-robert-pattinson-bong-joon-ho-1235870252/ Quote Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton and follows Mickey 7, a space colonist known as an expendable — those who do the colony’s most dangerous work and often die in the process, only to be brought back to life through human printing technology. The protagonist in the novel is the seventh version of a man named Mickey Barnes, but in the movie, that’s been upped. “The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him ten times more,” Bong said to laughs from the crowd. “It’s a sci-fi movie, but it’s a human story.” The trailer, which was not released outside the room, was set to Frank Sinatra, which added levity to some rather violent scenes, such as Mickey losing a hand and being dumped alive into liquid metal (with his consent). ... Post-production delays pushed the film off a March 2024 release date to Jan. 31, 2025, a date that turned heads given that this does not position Oscar-winner Bong’s latest as an awards contender. The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie and Toni Collette. * * * Pattinson essentially plays two characters — Mickey 17 and Mickey 18, and while they are genetically identical, Pattinson gave them different characteristics. Mickey 17, he says, is beaten down by life but is happy to be part of a team, while 18 is more like “playing an evil brother” who is “out of control.” Warner Bros. 2024 CinemaCon Panel Live Blog By Sean O'Connell April 9, 2024 https://www.cinemablend.com/news/live/warner-bros-2024-cinemacon-panel-live-blog Quote Up next is Mickey 17, the latest from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho, who is coming on stage for the first time at CinemaCon! * * * Bong explains why his movie is called Mickey 17, while the source book is Mickey 7. He jokes that the number reflects the number of times the character dies, so Bong killed him 10 additional times! * * * The Mickey 17 trailer is about to screen: * * * Oh, OK, Mickey 17 looks hilarious. I didn't realize it was so comedic. It's sci-fi, with a Snowpiercer tone, that follows a character named Mickey (Robert Pattinson) who signs up to be an "expendable," which means he's repeatedly cloned for tough missions. And killed off. Again and again. But it escalates. The cast is excellent. In addition to multiple Pattinsons, we get Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, and Toni Collette. The worst part? It has a January release date. Looks worth the wait. Edited April 10 by tv echo Link to comment
tv echo April 12 Share April 12 (edited) I Just Saw Paul Mescal Fight A Rhinoceros For Gladiator 2, And I Couldn't Be More Hyped For Ridley Scott's Sequel By Sean O'Connell April 11, 2024 https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/saw-paul-mescal-fight-rhinoceros-gladiator-2-ridley-scott-cinemacon-denzel-washington Quote There are several callbacks to Scott’s original Gladiator throughout the footage, which makes sense. Even though the initial film came out in 2000, the legacy extends far, being one of the most successful collaborations between Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. No, we never see Crowe in the footage for Gladiator 2 – his character, Maximus, dies at the end of the movie. But we did get a shot of a hand glancing over the top of fields of wheat… and it made me wonder if we might somehow get Crowe back from the afterlife. That was Scott’s original plan for the sequel, after all. I’m still holding out hope. Maximus is referenced early in the footage by Lucius (Paul Mescal), the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus who will follow a similar path through the Gladiator ring. Lucius claims to think about Maximus daily, about how a humble man could challenge the powerful through the Gladiator competition. But, per the footage that we managed to see, the challenges in the ring are increasing exponentially. Mescal matches Crowe’s physicality and rage. But he’s going to face off against hulking adversaries, and animals. ANIMALS! There was a fight scene where the gladiators fought feral, ferocious apes. And in another, Mescal faced off against a gladiator riding on the back of a rhino, whose horn had been bloodied by the corpses of his prey. It was so sick! Ridley Scott already informed us that Mescal’s Lucius has lost touch with his mother (Connie Nielsen, returning to her role), and that for all she knows, he might be dead. She still runs in the elite circles, which this time out will be portrayed by Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal. Quinn, in particular, seems to be taking his performance cues from Joaquin Phoenix in the first movie, playing spoiled and psychotic. There’s even a shot of Quinn’s character, Emperor Caracalla, giving the thumbs down. * * * The final major character introduced in the footage is played by Denzel Washington. He will be Mescal’s mentor in the movie, someone who coaches him on what is important to the powerful Roman rulers, and schools him on how to manipulate the games to possibly bring them down. It becomes clear as the footage goes on that Washington’s character is using Mescal’s Lucius for ulterior motives, but they are unclear in this footage. Everything that we saw in the footage was massive in scale and scope. One of the Colosseum battles featured two ships IN THE FLOODED ARENA as they went head to head in battle. The sight of Mescal facing a rhino is unforgettable. And the last bit suggested an expansion of war, as Pedro Pascal’s character appears to escalate the battle, leading to a face off in the ring with Lucius. ‘Gladiator II’ First Look Gets Thumbs Up & Loud Cheers From Exhibs At CinemaCon By Anthony D'Alessandro, Nancy Tartaglione April 11, 2024 https://deadline.com/2024/04/gladiator-2-first-look-paramount-cinemacon-1235882043/ Quote …Paramount ended their CinemaCon 2024 on an epic note, that being Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II. The logo was unveiled and title made official today at the Las Vegas studio exhibitor confab. Raised stakes here: Rhinos, man-eating monkeys, battling boats in the Colosseum and a very quotable, wise, fierce Roman statesman played by Denzel Washington — he’s not an Emperor. Not only does Paramount have a Thanksgiving tentpole locked up here in the sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning Best Picture, but — wow — they clearly have another awards contender on their hands. * * * First shot in the trailer is a glimpse of hands sifting through rice, and echo of the famous shot of Maximus’ hand skimming over the top of a waving field of wheat in the original film. Says Paul Mescal’s son of Russell Crowe’s late Maximus in a voiceover, “I remember the days that a slave could take revenge on the emperor, that a slave found justice in the arena.” “Can you hear that crowd?” says Washington, “The greatest temple that Rome ever built was the Colosseum..this is what they believe in…power.” The son of Maximus, like his father, is a slave who is more than his worth in the arena, leading a rebellion. Pedro Pascal plays a revered right-hand Roman military leader to the Emperor, but also a fierce fighter in the arena. The battle goes beyond the Colosseum in large-scale epic fights outside of stone edifices — big skirmishes that only Scott can pull off. Connie Nielsen is back, and we see her bestowing Maximus’ ring to his son. * * * The sequel hits theaters on Nov. 22. Edited April 14 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

Anduin April 18 Share April 18 I wish Daisy Ridley's other work grabbed me. I like her, she deserves a good career. But to be honest, I just want her to put her hair back in the buns, get in the spaceship, and pick up the lightsabre again. She's allowed to have a different hairstyle, but the rest is non-negotiable. :) Link to comment
