Snow still coming around here. Everywhere is closed, roads are a mess, and I am hunkered down with two bottles of wine, a bottle of vodka and some cherry coke to mix it with. I am good to go!

Oh, and I have food and stuff. Guess that`s important too :)

Work closed a little after noon here. There were some snow showers, but no accumulation. I remote desktopped into work after I got home. I'm stocked up on Vodka and things to mix it with....which is practically anything! I'm sure most of the roads will be passable tomorrow.

I stumbled across the Emma Thompson night on TCM tonight. Caught the tail-end of "Much Ado About Nothing," then "Sense & Sensibility." The latter made me cry, between the story and seeing Alan Rickman.

Snowpocalypse makes me giggle. when people talk about getting a couple feet of snow and I just tend to go, "yeah, yeah whatever." I can't help it. I don't even live where it gets super bad when it comes to snow. I live in the lower peninsula of MI. We're begging for colder weather and snow so we can go ice fishing. :(

Also, i lol'd at a recent "pure michigan"

tweet, because while everyone is flipping out about the snowpocalypse, the twitter account casually posts a U.P. pic of solid snow that almost completely cover up road signs. Just a regular ol' day for the U.P. I suppose.

I'm such a horrible person, really I am. I wish we were having a snowpocalypse. I like snow. You all are welcome to send the snow and blizzards our way. The ice fishermen would rejoice as well as the ski places.

I hope everyone is staying safe though. Enjoy getting all that time to stay warm and snug indoors! I'm jealous!

Where are you in Michigan? I grew up around Detroit so usually this is no big deal, but the worst of the storm came over night so there was no way to keep up with it dumping on us here in northern Virginia. Plus, we have alot of people who for whatever reason have no idea how to handle this crap. I stocked up on food and hunkered down not because I don't know how to drive in this but because I would be on the road with people who have no idea how to drive in this.

Okay, I'm not sure where this goes. The Writers thread? The Cast in Other roles? Media? Social Issues? I'm putting this here and maybe the mods can move it where they prefer, but I thought it was interesting to discuss.

So I don't know if you guys remember, A&E have another show. It's called "Dead of Summer". They have just cast their first three series regulars. And, maybe because of the criticism of Once's diversity? But of the three regulars, one is a gay Latino character, one is a WOC, third is white. Here is the news from TVLine.

Rumsy4: but this winter has been a bummer with the lack of snow. :(

I live in what's considered West Michigan. Where the world's tallest weather vane is. :) honestly I'm surprised no one has built a taller weather vane yet. I guess living near it all your life makes it seem pretty small, because yeah, it's not that tall?

Generally you can trust most of the other drivers in michigan when it comes to driving in horrible, snowy weather. We all have experience. My driver's training took place in almost blizzard-like conditions and in the dark. I don't trust anyone from the south (they're driving disasters), but I don't know if north easterners are as bad. But by the sounds of it, they aren't much better?

The wind would be the worst of the problems for driving. All that snow drifting can be awful. So if anyone has to drive in the blizzard, be extra careful. Be properly dressed in the event that you may go into a ditch (boots, gloves, phone, the works), bring a blanket!

Anyways, yeah. Not much snow this year in our area. We had 2-3 days of good snowing last week, but not much else. Temperatures are staying steady around 20 degrees during the day.

How cold is it getting in the blizzard? I wonder how it compares to the polar vortex a few years back.

I've also been trying to follow the Flint water crisis. All those poor people. The poor city. I actually never heard of Legionnaire's Disease before, but my mom explained it a little. She said it's typically caused by the bacteria in the water (especially warm water), and that's why back in the day parents were told to use purified water for baby formula or at least boil the tap water first (so the bacteria gets killed). My mom wonders if parents-to-be are told this anymore, because as of late, all the couples we know seem to be using warm tap water all willy nilly, so it must not be as big of an issue these days? Or they aren't being told? Or they figure the water is safe enough?

But Flint's water supply was literally being poisoned because they switched to super old city water pipes from what I've heard (so lead poisoning). Which was an extremely dumb move on the city officials' part to begin with.

Found the michigan tweet! From a day ago.

This is what the U.P. is like every year. And for a very large chunk of the year too. The lower peninsula doesn't get nearly as much most of the time, but this is why I giggle at things like the Snowmegeddon (how many names does Winter Storm Jonas have?). I bet the Yoopers are just rolling their eyes and cackling right now.

No no... don't send the Snow to MI (I live there too, haha). The last two winters were awful enough.

I second this. If Michigan gets it then we will get it in Northeast Ohio too! I am fine with having a mild winter after the last two. I sympathize with everyone affected by this storm, it's kind of surreal to be left out of it, but I'm sure there's plenty of winter left to go around!

They should be rolling their eyes! Of course, I was the ass trying to shovel 30 inches of snow. So thankful we have neighbors who moved here from Minnesota and have an industrial size snowblower.

Cold isn't the issue, it's just the snow. Alot of it. Haven't seen a plow down my street all day -- they had to suspend plowing because the plows got stuck in the snow. It started at 1pm yesterday, it's now 5:30pm today, and it has never stopped. We still have another 2-4 hours of snow. Dammit.

Link to comment

Sharky, you need neighbors like mine who think that plowing with their side by side is the most fun ever, so they plow out everyone on the street and are sad when they run out of driveways to clear.

I had to laugh tonight because for some stupid reason I was watching the news and they were showing kids sledding down the Rocky Steps in Philadelphia as a segue into the weather. So they said that Philly got 18 inches of snow and moved into local weather with an aside that we'll also be seeing a couple of feet in some places tonight. Shockingly, we weren't given a lecture on what to do when lots of snow falls from the sky.

We wound up with a foot.  Roads are clear and stores are mobbed because apparently everyone blew through their 8 loaves of bread and four gallons of milk yesterday while the roads weren't good.

I feel bad for the people in DC.  We lived in Northern Virginia in 2009-2010 when we got three 20"+ storms in a row, the last one of which I was at home with a 2 week old baby.  People in DC by and large cannot handle snow.  Not only do they not typically get lots of it, but people in DC are largely transplants so it is very hard to anticipate what anyone particular driver will do or be able to handle in inclement weather.  One guy in my neighborhood took his sports car out in unplowed 15 inch drifts to drive to McDonalds, which incidentally, was walkable from our development.  It was also fun watching the plows get stuck because the drivers typically had so little experience operating the vehicles.  My husband and other neighbors wound up digging out the plow and then pretty much clearing the street on their own.  I anticipate it will be a good week before DC is back up and running.

It's a good thing I wasn't watching Once back when we were homebound with that storm.  Clearly had I taken parenting advice from the show, I would have been in Florida while my baby was hanging out with a conglomerate of sitters during the snow.

It's snowing again here! *twirls.*

Too bad it's a wet/slushy snow. Not quite sleet, though. It means lots of ice on the roads, which isn't good.

Just got done watching "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" on TCM.

IT WAS GLORIOUS. I've never seen it before, but mother of pearl--I was laughing and yelling like a lunatic throughout the whole movie. The movie has so much energy. I was so happy when Molly and JJ reunited at the end after she got back home from surviving the Titanic.

Did anybody else watch Grease Live? What a production! They really raised the bar for staging a live musical on TV -- all those sets! Just tons of fun. I feel for Vanessa Hudgens just losing her dad yesterday, but I did miss Stockard Channing a lot, though. I liked her take on Rizzo more.

Link to comment

^ no. I skipped it.

My loyalty lies with Galavant, Downton, and Mercy Street :P. I would have watched it had it been on any day other than Sunday (and Tuesday because of Agent Carter).

But I heard it was excellent. Maybe if they repeat it like NBC did with The Wiz, I'll catch it.

It makes me wonder if ABC will jump into the fray at all, or will it turn into a Fox vs NBC thing.

Besides a few audio and technical glitches, I thought Grease Live really upped the game for live musical events on TV. The huge set, breaking the fourth wall, and allowing the cast to have fun really separated it from the other live musicals. But the best part of it all was Lin-Manuel Miranda's live tweets about the show.

It makes me wonder if ABC will jump into the fray at all

ABC took a gamble with Galavant and it seemed to pay off, so I could see them possibly wanting to get involved with the live musical game. And with all of their "live" Bachelor/Bachelorette stuff, ABC knows how to produce entertaining live television.

Who knows, maybe they'd consider recruiting a few musically inclined OUAT cast members to join the musical...

I have a really dumb tumblr question!

Can you see your own posts in the general search tag? They should show up right? Whether I'm logged in or not none of my posts seem to show up. Yet my username pops up in the notes if I reblogged or "liked/faved" a post. And I know people can see posts I've added stuff to...but I'm pretty sure I have this pseudo-ghost account of some sort. I exist, but I feel like my account is 30% part ghost.

My ancient tumblr mobile app is probably to blame (it's iOS 6). :(

If you just reblog stuff, then your posts won't show up in the general tags. Even when you make original posts, only the first five tags in a  post are tracked.

If your type your username, at least your blog should show up in the search.

Link to comment

Even if you make an original post, you won't see your posts under any of the tags. You have to go to your /blog/ page to see your posts. The only exception is if you post using a side blog. Then you'll be able to see those posts in the tags.

^ awww!!! That's a lovely gifset!

Who's watching the superbowl this weekend? It means missing Downton and most likely Mercy Street, which is disappointing. But my mom and brother always watch Downton together and my mom and I watch Mercy Street together, so I'd rather watch that stuff with them the next day rather than alone.

Don't like football, but hopefully the commercials are decent this year. Hopefully the Denver team isn't as awful as they were the last time they were in the Superbowl. That was plain embarrassing.

So I have some empty burlap rice sacks I got free at this Indian restaurant I like. I thought I might do something with them, but so far...nada. Then it occurred to me to contact the local foster care folks to suggest a craft project for any of their kids that might be interested. I've got plenty of crafting materials, too: beads, buttons, ribbon - all kinds of stuff. Wouldn't it be great if the kids could personalize their own tote bags?

Someone up thread mentioned The X-Files. I've been watching it, and aside from the first ep, I've really been enjoying it so far. Only two episodes left. Waaaah! OTOH, the ratings have been pretty good, and everyone involved seems interested in doing more, on TV or another movie.

No snow here, that's for sure. Just another day in paradise.

I just spent the last 2 hours waiting in the online waiting room to purchase San Diego Comic Con tickets, only to walk away with none. Oh well...I guess I'll try again in 2017.

That's too bad!

We've been babysitting for my niece the past two days. We think she's teething. Lots of chomping on stuff (especially her hands) and lots of angry noises. She's also in the stage where she's scratching her face up. She's a happy baby for the most part though. She's a little over 4 months.

Plan on catching the Disneyland special tonight. Hasn't Disneyland been celebrating it's 60th anniversary for the past 2-3 yrs now? I'm pretty sure of it. And then there's the Mercy Street finale at 10 pm.

It's been sunnier (and windier) as the weather here is slowly starting to warm up. We've been ranging 30-40 degrees the past half week.

Haven't heard back yet, re: rice bags. Not sure how long it might take. You'd think if they weren't interested they'd at least take a moment to thank me for my interest or something. Meanwhile, I heard about this group on the radio the other day: http://asensofhome.org. They help kids who've aged out of the system by providing them with donated furniture and household goods.

I teared up watching Dick Van Dyke join Derek Hough and actually do a great little piece of Step In Time on the 60th Disneyland celebration. That made my day.

I loved that and the ovation he got from the audience. Mary Poppins is one of my top five all-time favorite films, and Dick Van Dyke is a national treasure. I'm so happy to see he's still stepping in time.

Zootopia looks great.

I knew Dick Van Dyke would appear in that routine at some point.

My brother thinks that The Jungle Book and Pete's Dragon are going to flop. He says they're trying to hard. I can see The Jungle Book doing decently well or good, but I'm iffy about Pete's Dragon. It looks nothing like I remember the old movie to be (And I'm not referring to the cgi). Maybe this calls for a rewatch. I haven't seen that movie in probably 10ish years.

All throughout the special I couldn't help think about the Walt Disney doc that aired on pbs a while back. It kind of makes it less enjoyable seeing people celebrating the happiness and success of Disney and the parks knowing how his years between snow white and opening the park were not the happiest of times (for multiple reasons).

Link to comment

Yeah, the strike by the animators and his parents deaths were hard on him. He would be amazed at the parks now but appalled at the cost.

I understand the reason, raise the prices so you can afford to keep everything in tip top shape and keep attendance from being overwhelming. It might be better to stop raising prices and capping the attendance at a reasonable level instead.

I had a dream. I was with the nevengers in the underworld. Not sure who all but for certain Mary Margaret, she gave me a hope speech about meeting my own true love some day. Since I wasn't a recognized member I was the only one going outside. I'd take one of the old wireless phones and try to pick up messages from the dirigibles overhead looking for them. Yeah, let's blame Hilary for those. I went back inside after a garbled message that I was going to pass on... Then my alarm went off. Weird but kinda fun I guess.

So, the shootings that happened (and current standoff going down at the dead perp's home) in two small towns in KS? Yeah. My home town is Newton. This is surreal. I have a cousin on the Newton police force, and an uncle on our fire/ems crew. I just hope they weren't dealing with the worst of it...Our city hospital is on lockdown, but we don't know why. Only that it's related to today's events. And a major street I drive on every day is closed due to multiple shooting incidents along it.

I think I have family in Newton. My dad's father was from that general part of Kansas, and then one of my dad's brothers ended up there, so I've got an uncle and cousins around there, as well as a bunch of distant relatives (who all seem to accidentally use one of my e-mail addresses when they order stuff online or make hotel reservations, so the notifications come to me -- I have a very old Yahoo account that's just my last name, and they seem to forget the first initial).

Wow, that's a crazy situation, and I can't believe I was unaware, in spite of watching the news tonight.

I've been flattened by a virus of some sort this week, with the upper respiratory symptoms of a mild head cold and the fever and aches of the flu, so I've been marathoning various documentaries about history that seem to have fallen into an unconscious theme -- exploring the origins of the Robin Hood mythology, the King Arthur mythology, and finding evidence of various pirate outposts. If I'm still not up and around tomorrow, perhaps I should marathon 5A.

A few months ago I started a Tumblr side blog for Luke Evans (Bard from The Hobbit who looked more like Orlando Bloom than Orlando did). And now he's using a photo edit I posted as his twitter avatar, which is amaaaaazing, but also has me slightly worried, cause my Tumblr is my fangirl safe zone, and omg what if he saw it? LOL At least I'm fairly calm and respectful on it, so I don't have to be too embarrassed.

Pomegranates! Of course, only if you want your guests to hang around your house 6 months of the year.... ;-)

Something flambeed. Or with an open flame -- fondue? The fondue forks are kind of like little devil pitchforks. Smores?

I was going to suggest pomegranates, too. If you want to get silly/cute, you could declare that vegetables that grow underground, like potatoes and carrots, are really from the Underworld.

You could make stuffed zucchini and call it "Charon's boats."
