Spoiler Discussion: The apple was poisoned?!

I can't believe Socha is still a regular for next season. Why does he even want to be in this Show??

Whether or not he wants to be or is happy about it, he's under contract. And this is a steady paycheck and some exposure for next to no work. The only downside is that being under contract means he has to be available, so it might be hard for him to schedule any other jobs for the times he's not working, since he might not know which day out of the filming cycle for each episode he'll need to be on set to make his cameo appearance. If he has any writing ambitions, this seems like it would be a good time to work on his novel or screenplay.

I'm guessing they really loved Socha on Wonderland and didn't want him to get away and signed him to contract in a hurry/panic without having any real idea how they were going to use him. And then never figured it out -- or spent much time in trying to figure it out.

Socha only signed a one year contract last year AFAIK. So, if he is still a regular in S5, this means A&E want to keep him on, and he thinks it's worth taking the chance. A&E will probably give him a storyline next season, provided they don't get distracted by the next new and shiny thing.

So the writers said they wouldn't be going to any other worlds next season, right? Assuming they stick to that, a) where has Emma disappeared to? b) where exactly are they going to search for Merlin -- Snow's shoe closet?

Given today's tumblr post laying out 25 spoilers they teased that didn't actually happen, I put zero stock in their assertion that we won't be going to any other worlds. I kind of took it to mean only that we wouldn't be setting off for a new world in the finale anyway.

This was a misunderstanding. They were just talking about the finale, and the same happens with the "we are not adding more characters". So I'm sure we are going to see Camelot next season and they are going to introduce a few new characters.

So since Upfronts have come and gone without any news, I think the soonest we can expect an hint about any cast changes is when they announce who's going to Comic Con. Does anyone remember when that usually happens?

Link to comment

Doesn't that usually happen somewhere mid-June?  ComiCon is July 9-12.  There's also the Paris Con where JMo, Colin and Lana are going and they are three regulars, so I'm assuming we might know by then or find out by then.

I don't know what in the world precipitated this, but JMo just tweeted that Emma is definitely NOT pregnant. Dunno if people were sending her tweets wondering, or if she saw a particular crazy tumblr theory going around.

Ah looking back over the interviews, I think you're correct. I conflated the two things in my head, because before the correction, "no new characters" logically led me to "no new worlds."

Well that's good, because I really would like to see them venture out of Storybrooke in the present day next season. (Even though that usually means fewer spoilers because there's more green screen).

I'm guessing Camelot will just be Enchanted Forest with a few different landmarks. We'll probably get some exterior forest shots at least. I hope it doesn't get the Oz treatment and barely gets shown at all.

Didn't Snowing travel to Camelot to get the sword in the stone?

Nope, David faked it to boost Snow's confidence. They never went to Camelot nor did they get Excalibur, it was just some sword planted by David in a stone.

They mentioned something about how Cora lies.  So I'm guessing they might retcon Lancelot's death.  There are tons of people from the Arthurian legends they can bring in.  Gawain has always been a favorite of mine.  But we also have characters that are similar to him, so I don't know.

They'll probably stick with characters that are well-known in Western culture. Big names like Lancelot, King Arthur, Merlin, Morgana (a bit lesser-known) etc. If we get Madam Mim... that'll be weird.

I hope Gwen stays the hell away from Once.  That's one character I cannot deal with.  For all the love I've always had for Maid Marian, I've had nothing but loathing and hatred for Guinevere.

I actually love Guinevere, no doubt because I've read a couple of really enjoyable series told from her point of view (written by Sharan Newman and Persia Woolley). She's much more likable in those than the Morte d'Arthur!

And I'd love to see Lancelot again.

You know, I had totally forgotten that Merlin is supposed to live life in the reverse...the future before the past. I wonder how they might use that on the show? Or will they?

So what you are saying is that this is going to be like when Mork laid an egg.

I'm not an expert on this part of the myth, what does it mean?

I did a little looking online, and he apparently just lives the future before the past without regressing in age. I think the legend is a little obscure on the facts. I should probably move this elsewhere since it's not a spoiler.

I'm okay with Guinivere but I just didn't care about the Merlin version. Although I'm not a big fan of that show overall, too simplistic.

I didn't like the dude playing Lancelot on Once, he was just... there.

Anyway, Merlin and Morgana are my favs and I really hope for an Elizabeth Mitchell-level casting for them, it could entice me to watch the season.

Something that was real was Lancelot -- and then Lancelot's death. I'm wondering how they are going to handle that one.

They did come up with a reasonable explanation for the Ursula-Ursula thing.  Maybe they'll do something similar--Lancelot's a family name, or a father-son thing, or a title, or the one they killed off was a fake/decoy Lancelot for some reason.

Just based on how they decided to fix the Ursula issue, this one I'm willing to give them a reasonable amount of credit.  On this.  Not everything, but this.  :)

Well, the Lady of Lake.  I'm not talking about that siren in Lake Nostros.  I'm talking about the real Lady of the Lake who is part of the Camelot mythology, you know the one who raised Lancelot.

Do we need a new topic devoted to Arthurian legend? This summer would be a good time for me to brush up on it.

Indeed! If anyone has a suggestion on a good book to read as a primer, I would be grateful. Or am I going to have to go back and watch that movie from the '90s with Sean Connery and Richard Gere? Please don't make me do it. Seriously, look at this hair.

I liked this movie as a kid. Haven't seen it in a while. It's based on Le MoRTE d'Arthur. I forgot how many great actors are in it.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excalibur_(film)

There's "The Once and Future King" by T H White, Disney's "The Sword in the Stone" (don't think I ever saw it, though), "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (you can find pdf's online). There's also "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" if you want a laugh.

Haha, it's "The First Knight"! I saw it when I was a young teenager, I think. I kinda liked it then. Despite the hair and everything. I didn't get to read or watch much fantasy at that point but I already loved the genre, and it scratched that itch. Plus, it wasn't that bad, at least from what I remember. Actually, it was probably one of better ways to handle the infamous triangle of doom I've seen.

Re: books, I remember reading Mary Stewart's series about Merlin. Sadly, I don't remember the title, but the first book was pretty good, at least (I only had 1 or 2).

Quest for Camelot comes to mind (lol), books: The Mists of Avalon, which i think is now part of a book series, and it was turned into a tv movie/miniseries I think.

Also, with all this talk of Camelot...Everyone is required to listen to this:

I've been asking Adam about Lancelot on twitter recently, but seeing how he rarely responds to reasonable questions, I doubt he'll spill anything before the first con they go to.

We are going to reopen this topic, with the note that this is to discuss SPOILERS. This is not to discuss what might or could happen, or what you'd like to see happen (or hate to see happen). Discussion here needs to be rooted in actual spoilers. If it goes off track, we reserve the right to lock the topic again.

I think it's possible we'll get a few small things from the con in Paris on June 20-21. I doubt the actors know much yet, but Jennifer Morrison may have some idea where they're heading with Dark Emma (ie will she be super evil or just super angsty).

I want to say one of the writers said they talked a lot about Hook in their story session but can't find that tweet anymore. I thought it was the new writer so perhaps A&E explained the no spoilers policy to her. Please tell me I wasn't the only one who saw that.

I just saw a giant Hook board pic in her office and her showing her fangirling out and now it's gone.

As if it wouldn't be even kind of logical considering Hook's relationship with Emma, that there should be some stuff going on including him. Although would be something new if they would follow some character logic here. Geeez. And it could do some good for the mood of parts of the fandom, and that assumption is coming from me as someone not into Captain Swan.

Honestly, at this point, I'm sort of wondering if the writers should spoil as little as possible or not at all.  The implication from the finale is that Emma and Hook are going to be front and center.  They should be talking about Hook the same way they should be talking about the time bomb that's growing inside of Zelena.

I saw the tweets from the new writer and Espenson.  The new writer was talking about her office mate and Espenson posted a pic of Hook "holding" Sargento cheese because they sent them a freebie.

Maybe she took it off after her first writing session, because it would be false advertising. By the end of summer, she will be tweeting pics of The Evil Queen cutout. Her conditioning would be complete by then. Welcome to The Stepford Writers. ;-)

Finally some spoilers! Casting description for "heavily recurring" Arthur, Merlin and Guinevere. They're going for diversity.

For MERLIN, Once is seeking an African American in his early 30s to early 40s and boasting a natural British accent to play “a man with great wisdom and intelligence beyond his years,” someone who has always put duty in front of his own desires, even at great personal cost.
ARTHUR is described as someone who came from low birth and now is king, a “good and just ruler” who, beneath the surface, “is a master manipulator who can carry a grudge to the grave, and maybe beyond.” He harbors an “eternal burning love” for Guinevere that can lean toward being a bit… controlling. For this role, Once aims to cast a gent in his mid-30s to early 40s, and again a British accent is mandatory.
The casting call Once Upon a Time Lancelot for GUINEVERE, meanwhile, seeks a Latina in her mid-20s to mid-30s to play a “headstrong queen” who fell in love with the dashing Lancelot — previously played on Once by Teen Wolf‘s Sinqua Walls, at right, but dead in the current timeline — her husband’s most trusted knight. She now must balance her own happiness with the well-being of Camelot.

How much money will you bet on Regina/Guinevere parallels?

So they aren't going to retcon Lancelot and his fate. Ugh.

Yeah I think I'm out for good. These descriptions just don't inspire me with confidence at all. Of course, maybe they'll manage to snatch some really great actor... but I doubt that.

Ugh, they've confirmed Lancelot's fate. I was hoping that was a Cora fake-out.

But does anyone else find it amusing that they're looking for an "African American" with "a natural British accent"? I think perhaps they mean a British person of African ancestry. The amusement of PC language abuse aside, I like the description of the character.
