I was flipping channels and fell upon Fifty Shades of Crap. I watched like 20 minutes out of sheer morbid curiosity. It has to be the literal worst mainstream film I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot of bad movies. Finally something worse than Skyline!

The lead actors HAVE no chemistry in fact it's anti-chemistry.  I've heard better dialogue in actual porn LOL. HOLY SHIT.

I think Dakota Johnson was actually OK in it but not enough for me to bother with any of the rest. I mean what a DISASTER LOL. I need a shower just get the stupid off me.

Just finished Jessica Jones, man do I love that show. It had strong female characters, a real female friendship, a terrifying villain and a satisfying ending.  My favorite part was that the real story was between Jessica and Trish, not their love interests. Marvel tv shows are doing a good job showcasing friendships between women without guys or love interests taking stories away from them. We had Peggy and Angie on Agent Carter and now Jessica and Trish, which I think are my new favorite female friendship pair.

Did David Tennant get enough material to show off his acting chops?

Yes he did. He did such an amazing job that it'll be hard for me to watch his Doctor Who run after watching his role on Jessica Jones. He wasn't the typical gloating villain what he did was horrible and terrifying. Tennant was able to give depth to a character like that and make you feel slightly for him. But not enough to want him redeemed or anything, you still wanted Jessica to win.

Better brace myself then. DT was far too convincing as a psychotic ex-boyfriend in a movie called Secret Smile. It was years (and a few guest appearances on Graham Norton) before I was able to look at him without getting creeped out.

How angsty/depressing is Jessica Jones?

Any thoughts on Lucifer?  Promos look promising.

I read In the Heart of the Sea and loved it.  But not going to see the movie...not even a Hemsworth can make me give a shit about whalers.  Go, RL Moby Dick, go.  Drown those whalers real good.

Jessica Jones is definitely not an easy show to watch.  I'm going to put these under spoiler tags just to be safe but it is a list of things that often get called Trigger warnings

rape, abortion, kidnapping, psychological abuse, suicide, PTSD, gore, torture, drug use and graphic violence

Not all of the things under the spoiler tags are shown but everything is at least talked about a few times.  I would use caution before recommending the series to someone but if you do decide to watch it overall the show was very good.

I'll also add another warning specific to AyChihuahua, given some of your recent posts.

There is a subplot involving a bus crash and a drunk driver. It's not a HUGE part of the story and does get wrapped up, but it is shown a few times (although nothing too graphic). Just in case that might bother you.

Good point, though the lure of a near constantly drenched Hemsworth is a lot to turn ones back on.

I think David Tennant was a wonderful Doctor Who, and yet even he couldn't keep me watching Broadchurch.

(Tom Baker will always be my Doctor Who though.)

I enjoyed Gracepoint (or was it Gracepark) the US version (which I hear was not as good). Still, made for a twisty mystery and I got my fun by guessing the twist just far enough in advance to horrify my friends when I put it out there.

I've been watching Dr Who since I was a kid desperately wanting an excuse to stay up late on Fri and Sat nights. (PBS baby!). I always said I thought Baker was the best but Peter Davidson was my favorite. To that I'd now say Tennant is in the running for both best and favorite. And yes, I am tickled about the Peter Davidson connection. :D

I don't know if I'm going to watch JJ. It sounds like it might be too heavy for me. Maybe later my headspace will change. Right now I feel like I don't have any fun shows anymore. Castle is now a chore (manufactured angst never looks good on any program and pretending the elephant isn't in the room half the time only makes the stupid hurt more. )

I guess I still have Crazy Ex Girlfriend but with its low numbers that show brings me down for other reasons. I'm also appreciating Bones more these days. Nothing new under the sun there but right now that's a big plus for me.

Jessica Jones does deal with a lot of heavy subject matter, I don't know of any other show that does deal with those subjects for an entire season. I can understand why it's not a show for everyone. It is very dark and horrific, they do have some humor but not enough if you are looking for a light show. What I liked is they didn't always use graphic violence or nudity to tell those stores. Everything is dealt with the aftermath and how it effects the characters and everyone around them. That's why I really liked this show, they weren't dependent on shocking the audience with visuals like most shows. Jessica Jones used the actors to convey what had happened to them and how they are coping or not coping.

I think my favorite thing about Jessica Jones is how it deals with all of this highly traumatizing shit, but it's not only a female driven story [because the protagonists are all women] -- it's also pretty much an exploration of the female gaze on traumatizing shit that, 99% of the time, is shown in fiction from the male gaze POV.

I loved the pilot. It didn't take itself too seriously and the main characters/actors worked well together. Lucifer is charming and as outrageous as you can be on network TV. I'm really looking forward to episode 2!

The promos for it look fun, I was thinking of giving it a shot.  Good to hear that it's worth the look.

This is so very true and it's also encouraging to see that the show was created by a woman and I've noticed women writers in the credits too.

I think it also deals with how awful it is to have had such a horrifying experience and carrying that around, knowing that people won't believe you if you told them. Or that they'd blame you, saying that you asked for it. It happens enough in the real world, never mind in comics. I was worried I'd find this show too triggery for me, but so far I've been ok.

I like that JJ is created by a woman and has a lot of women writers and stars mostly women with the stories being about them, told from their POV. Apparently Carrie Anne Moss's character was originally a male character, then they hired her and kept the same story and personality.  Personally I like that Hogarth was a woman as well, they have a variety of different women characters and aren't afraid to just let them be who they are. They never tried to sugarcoat any of them.

Even the dudes are all written from a female pov, ie they only have agency in the story as it relates to the female protagonists. They're all there to service the ladies' narratives, even Kilgrave. His pov and his justifications for being a piece of shit are pretty much irrelevant, because the narrative treats him as dangerous, but his motivation as ridiculous.

That's just so fucking GOOD to watch, especially in contrast to how Daredevil glorified its villain and gave him a sympathetic pov, which ultimately made me dislike the show for trying to justify a violent bully. JJ gives Kilgrave background and motivation, and then makes a mockery of it. Glorious.

Count me in as loving Jessica Jones too. I only had time to watch four episodes this weekend, but can't wait to finish up over Thanksgiving. I love all the female protagonists and that none of them are exactly what you expected they would be - especially Trish, who is excellent. Also love the focus on Jessica/Trish since so few shows showcase female friendship.

This. So much. It's refreshing to finally see a show make a woman's trauma actually about the woman and not the man who did it or the men in her life.

Moving away from Jessica Jones for a second since I don't have Netflix (so jealous of all you people who have a decent internet connection).  Watched Agent X last night, and Zed from Constantine was on there.  The male lead on Agent X is named John as well, so I thought that was a bit funny.

Finally got around to watching the Into the Badlands pilot.  It was kinda cheesy but interesting enough that I'll keep watching.  I like the lead, Sunny, and yay! Madeleine Mantock (Astrid from The Tomorrow People) plays his girlfriend/a doctor.  I'm not sure they advertised this show well enough, because I had absolutely no idea what it was about when I sat down to watch it.

If you watch the Walking Dead, they played a preview for Into Badlands every commercial break for weeks before it started. I watched the pilot it is cheesy but looks like a typical stylized martial arts show. I'm watching the second ep later, I'll see how I like it after that.

I refuse to watch Into The Badlands on sheer principle alone. I hate that AMC has been holding TWD's audience hostage for weeks to get people to tune into their new pet project, right down to pushing Talking Dead after Badlands. NBC did the same thing with Blindspot. If you advertise something so much that I want to throw things at the TV after being subjected to the commercial/promo for the 546th time, I'm even less likely to watch said show.

Holy shit, Jessica Jones is everything. And Kilgrave is just amazing. One of the best TV villains EVER, and Tennant just knocks it out of the park. I think the last time I've felt so many conflicting emotions towards a character was Norman Bates on Bates Motel, but Tennant is an even better actor, I'd say. And Ritter holds her own as well.

Link to comment

Jessica Jones is everything I wanted and more.

I wasn't sure about Ritter playing a super hero (either was she from what I read) but she is perfect for this role. I guess I should know better than to question Marvel's casting department they have never let me down before.

I've been flip-flopping on whether to ask this question, because everybody seems so much in agreement that it could be seen as trolling...but here it is. Is there someone else not looking forward to the new Starwars?

Because:

1) I dislike pretty much everything JJ Abrams has ever done. (I heard he did good for Star Trek but I don't like Star Trek...the way I don't like Laurel).

2) The only sequel I'd ever accept is an adaptation of  the Timothy Zahn trilogy (and the duology that followed, but it was pretty much damage control with all the crap made in between imo, so I don't know if it could be relevant in a non-crappy timelime). I was OK with waiting for ten or fifteen more years for that.

I already bought my tickets for Star Wars but my expectations are pretty low. The prequels have set the bar so incredibly low but JJ Abrams is in charge... I don't think it'll be horrible but I'm not expecting anything amazing. It's in the same category as the Marvel movies for me.

I'm old enough that I stood in line, a lot of times, to watch Star Wars in the theater.  And I HATED the prequels; I mean I wanted to burn somebody's (GEORGE!) house down for how totally, absolutely, completely awful they were.

On the other hand, I loved the new Star Trek films, especially the first one.  I'm otherwise neutral on JJ Abrams...like some stuff, dislike other stuff.  But I have no trust because the prequels were so terrible (saw #1 in the theater, never really saw #2, saw parts of #3 and think Anakin should burn in hell for killing all those kids).

So basically, I think I'll wait for it to come out on digital streaming.

I am kind of surprised that everyone is so excited for these since the last 3 Star Wars were terrible. They are the most recent reminders, yet everyone is hopeful again without much reason IMO.

It's not like Marvel, who have yet put out a really terrible movie. All of their movies have been great to okay, so I trust them and will go see any movie they put out. Star Wars hasn't earned my trust back yet. I do want to see the Force Awakens but I'm still a little wary about it.

I'm neutral to negative re: JJ Abrams. I liked the first nuTrek, hated the second. I rage-quit 3 of this shows midway through, but I liked their first seasons a lot. But I have a ticket for the first available screening near me because I owe it to six year old me to go see Leia one more time at a ginormous screen.

Yay! Crazy Ex-Girlfriend got picked up for 5 more episodes. I was putting my fingers in my ears and la la la la-ing the cancellation speculation in here, so this news makes me really happy. iZombie also got picked up for 6 more episodes.

Fringe?

I quit twice while it was on air. Eventually binge-watched the entire thing, but I never warmed up to the characters. I just liked the fake science. And I hated Pacey, which is like, SACRILEGE to me.

I don't know where to put this, but The CW has ordered additional episodes to both iZombie [which previously had script orders], and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend:

Where the hell are they gonna put stuff mid-season, a mystery.

I loved the fake science, and Walter, and Peter.  Never fell in love with Olivia.  But if I hadn't binged 1-4, there are definitely points in S3/S4 I would have quit.  S5 was a bit of a slog too, but by then I was invested in the ending.

I've developed an enormous amount of gratuitous hatred for John Noble, because he keeps showing up as the scenery-chewing wacko that disrupts the narrative in every single show I watch and I need him to GO THE FUCK AWAY from my tv now.

Congrats! My bubble show -if I'm optimistic- also got picked-up for 5 more, so I know how you feel! Let's keep our fingers crossed for a miracle!

Thanks for all the replies about Starwars! It's interesting to have all those points of views -and not being burned at the stake is a plus :)

To be fair, Abrams had already left those shows and moved on to his next project when those crazy plots happened. So if anyone has reason to worry, it would be fans of the Star Trek movies.

I think the only JJ Abrams show I ever watched was Fringe and I really couldn't get into it. I have a few friends who would rave about it. I gave it several attempts but just couldn't get into it.

However, I loved both Trek movies and I even liked Super 8, he's earned my trust for now.

So I'm not the only one! I quite thrice, actually. But I LOVED the latter half of season 2 and the whole of season 3. I've yet to binge it, though - season 4 is just horrible, no other word for it. I've tried twice to go through it but I just get bored in the middle. So frustrating because I do care, somewhat. Season 4 just erased all characters I cared about. (or killed them, in case of AltLincoln)

My favorite part of Fringe is the whole alt-verse thing which was somehow dropped after s3, long before it was time. Also, JJ Abrams isn't the one to credit for Fringe anyway, the real showrunners are other guys.

I'm very skeptical about the new Star Wars. Nothing I've seen has made me hopeful, but I'm still going to watch it in cinema, because friends.

I don't care about Star Trek and I didn't care about the reboot either. The only stuff of JJ Abrams I really really liked was seasons 1-2 of Alias.
