@SleepDeprived thank you soooo much!!!! I checked and all subtitles are there! I didn't spoil anything either as it was a super quick ninja scroll through!

I had visions of us overseas trying to watch it at night and we'll be like "Where are the subtitles!!!!???? How are we going to get the missing subtitles????"

I'm so conflicted about Timeless.

I'd like it to be renewed and get new adventures but if it's going to end with Flynn being written off and Lucy ending up with Wyatt  (which is probably what will happen) I'd rather it end now so I can write my own ending. (This is the first time I've been all on a non-canon ship and it's very uncomfortable. )

I don't watch the Hand Maiden's Tale because it is too dark/disturbingly realistic for me but can someone tell me how they plan to write in Yvonne Strahovski's pregnancy? Isn't her character unable to have children?

Or will they hide her tummy behind pot plants?

Anyone here watching Voltron on Netflix?  The newest season went up this weekend.  I thought it was really good.

Oh!  I didn't realize it went up!  Thanks for mentioning it.  :D

She's very pregnant now, so I'm sure she'll have had the baby by the time next season starts. This season so far it's been a non-issue. Either she wasn't pregnant during filming, or in the very early stages. And there's only a few episodes left to it, so I don' t think it will affect production.

Is Steak Sauce nice?

I've been given a recipe using it but I'm dubious........

I enjoy steak sauce.   Honestly I don't usually add anything but salt,  pepper and garlic for my steaks but I'll use a1 on cheaper cuts of meat.

I’d be interested to know what you think after you watch it.  The Voltron forum here is dead, and the Tumblr fandom is all about the ship wars, which I have no interest in dealing with. :(

For some reason I assumed they were filming now!

I think they film in the late summer and fall. A really long time ahead.

Lots of people put it on their meat after cooking, but it's also used as a meat tenderizer for cheaper cuts of meat.  It's kind of like a combination of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

If you're cooking with an open flame, you should have some sort of sauce on your meat to keep the cancer-causing products from being created.

The recipe was for giant mushrooms on a fasting day!

She said to spread steak sauce on a mushroom, put a tomato slice on, top with a slice of cheese and bake.

I am not sure about the steak sauce!

So rainy......do I walk out for laksa........

Link to comment

I put a little Italian salad dressing on the mushrooms and grill them on the BBQ.  Like ketchup, steak sauce usually has quite a bit of sugar and fat.

(I stopped buying tortillas when I realized that a small tortilla has twice the calories of a large pita because of the sugar and oil.)

Link to comment

Thanks ladies I will forgo the steak sauce! I dug out a bottle of Season All (msg n herbs basically). Will use that instead!

I didn't realise shop tortillas were so high in calories! My home made recipe only has 2T of oil in it.

Boooo no laksa for me today! Very wet in the city apparently! Everyone is telling me to stay home!

*sad there is no laksa*

On the bright side I am 1.5kg from hitting my post baby weight (thinnest I had ever been since I was 22ish, newborns make you miserable and skinny)! So YAY to the 5:2!!!!!!!

@statsgirl Explain bagged milk to me??? Is it really a Canadian thing?

I was actually stalking the Golden Skate forum for info on Evgenia Medvedeva when I ran into all these references to bagged milk (they are excited for her to try bagged milk now that she's in Canada)! Found pics on the internet but is it actually a thing you guys use normally?

Link to comment

@Mellowyellow, it's how I always buy my milk.  Four litres of milk comes in a bag which holds three clear plastic bags of milk. A bag fits in a reusable container like a large jug.

It avoids the chemicals that come with the cardboard containers and if four litres are too much for one time, I can put one of the bags in the freezer for later.   I recycle the plastic bags so it's pretty good for the environment.

How do you get your milk?

Link to comment
(edited)

We get ours in plastic bottles which we rinse and put in the recycling.  They come in 1, 1.5, 2 or even 3 Litres depending on brand.

A few brands sell 1litre in the paper containers.

The bag of milk is something I've never heard of. So interesting how something so ordinary is so different between two countries.

It's funny, because in grade school we used bagged milk all of the time and we were in the US and as far away from Canada as you could get. My friends thought I went to school on an alien planet when I described milk bags to them.

I'm in a state just adjacent to Canada and I have seen them sell bagged milk in some convenience stores in my town ( the kinds at gas stations) but in grocery stores, milk is either a gallon or half-gallon in plastic jugs or a half gallon in the paper cartons.

I'm sorry for the fans.  I'm kind of sorry for me too because I just got into the fandom and fanfic.  It was going to be my replacement for all the Arrow fanfic about Oliver in prison and Felicity and William on Protection Island this summer. (It's going to be a tough summer for Arrow fic.)

On the other hand, I stumbled into the fangirlish reviews of the show yesterday and everyone there are hard-core Lyatt shipper, including the Arrow reviewer who I usually agree with.  Reading those review and how hard they shipped their ship, it made me think that if there were going to be a third season, Lucy would end up with Wyatt.  With the cancellation, I can quietly imagine that Wyatt reconciles with his wife and Lucy goes on to a more adult relationship with Flynn.

I'm sorry for those fans. I couldn't make it past ep 4 of the first season, but I do know they have a dedicated fandom. It would be nice if NBC gave them a movie, especially since they already saved it once. That said, I read how the writers ended the finale, and it seems kinda messed up on their part. Once they saw that season 2 was was flopping ratings wise, they must've know renewal was unlikely, and should have at least given fans a better finale without a cliffhanger or death. They didn't need to write a series finale but something more satisfying.

(edited)

I didn't see it as a cliffhanger except in the sense that it's a question how they are going to get Rufus back. Because I 100% believe that they were going to get Rufus back.

The relationship stuff is up in the air although having Future Lucy come back with Future Wyatt pretty much answers that question too.

I couldn't make it past ep 2 in season 1 but I did come back in season 2 when Flynn joined the team. I thought he made the other characters more interesting, like adding salt to a dish.

12 Monkeys just gave LoT a run for its money for wacky time travel shenanigans. Cassie shooting up Nazis dressed in boots and a bustier while Jennifer covers P!nk directly to Hitler's face was great and unexpected given how seriously they usually take things.

... eh? They are heavy as hell and sleep a lot (and get high on a daily basis), but they're not dangerous. I mean, don't go and bug them when they're in the wild but of all the animals we have in this country, koala's are probably the most friendly. Even emu's start wars over here - and don't start me on the cassowary. Girl better back away from my bb's.

Side note - I didn't realise it, but koala's apparently dislike being held. And now I feel horrible for all the times I've cuddled one. Poor things. :(

Moving over from news thread.

I bet it's all the rumours they spread about our harmless creatures!

5yo hand fed a cassowary, supervised with permission by zoo keepers and it was the most lovely well mannered bird. The zoo keepers said he's (the cassowary) had a nice life so he's pretty chilled.

***

I successfully bought take away using my own reusable boxes today!!!! So happy!!!! Person looked at me like I was a bit peculiar but she talked to the chef and they agreed I could do it.

Hehe they even smiled when I asked them for sweet chilli sauce and whipped out a sauce container and my own bag to carry the food home?

I'm thinking of expanding to bringing my own ice cream cups when I'm out and the 5yo wants ice cream. Wonder if the ice cream shops will tolerate it.

You are committed!  Sometimes the cups also measure the amount of product so it probably would depend.  I'm not a fan of cones, but for those that are, they are already taking care of the container problem.  Can't get much more environmentally friendly than eating the packaging!

Cones and kids get so messy.

They let me use my own cups when I buy a drink now so that's a good thing. Haha my friend and I were lamenting that our keep cup was smaller than the shop cup so we get less drink.

Will be wearing my house on my back soon! These days I carry around shopping bags, metal straw, chopsticks, plastic containers plus the usual supplies.

So I have a question.  I see that Netflix has the animated Star Wars series Clone Wars, but I don’t know much about it except it’s set before the original trilogy.  My question is:  if I haven’t seen the prequels, will I be totally lost if I try to watch it?  And is it any good?  (I guess that’s two questions - lol.)

Ok according to hubs you will need to watch the first 6 movies (the Luke and Anakin stuff) as some of the Clone Wars stuff happens before the Anakin stuff.

He says it is pretty good.

Well I guess that will have to wait awhile then. I haven’t seen the prequel trilogy, and they’re not available to rent anywhere (and I have no intentions of spending $60 to purchase them).

I get very confused about what title Canadian politicians are called.  I'm looking and Doug Ford, he's basically the Governor of Ontario?  Premier sounds as fancy as Prime Minister.

I think the powers are similar but they get there differently.

Like in Britain and Australia, the leader of the country or territory is the person who is the leader of the party that gets the most seats in the election rather than being a position someone runs for on their own.*  In Ontario, the previous premier was the leader of the Liberal Party because they got the most seats in the previous election. In the election last month, the Conservative Party got the most seats and their leader is Doug Ford, older brother of Rob Ford (you may have heard of him) so now Doug Ford is the premier of Ontario.  (Premier is the French word for 'first'.)  Nationally, he or she is known as the Prime Minister but likewise the leader of the party that got the most seats.

One of Trudeau's election promises was to get rid of the 'first past the post' system, to something that combines votes for individual and for party as they have in some European countries.  I really hope they do, even though it looks like he's reneging on it.. In this case, 'first past the post' gave Ford 61% of the seats with only 40% of the popular vote.

*The one exception is Nunavut where after the election, all those elected to the Legislative Assembly get together and decide which of them is going to be running things.

I watched the series finale of 12 Monkeys. The timey-wimey stuff made no sense, but who cares? I was very happy with the ending. In reading some post-mortem articles about this finale, I thought of Arrow when I read the following two excerpts...

"The best adaptations of IP aren't in slavish service to their source material but are inspired by that material to say something new — something personal, something genuine. I've come to learn that adapting doesn't have to be an act of re-creation. Just gratitude. We wanted to take our love of Gilliam's film and with the advantage of a longer form narrative, more deeply explore what it made us hope and believe about the nature of time." -- Terry Matalas, 12 Monkeys showrunner, in July 6, 2018 The Hollywood Reporter article titled "'12 Monkeys' Series Finale: The Deeply Personal Road to 'Happily Ever Now' (Guest Column)"

"Many of the great (and terrible) genre shows in the modern era drift a lot of excitement off the idea of constant change: new settings, expanding worlds, an ever-expanding cast of characters. By necessity but also by purpose, 12 Monkeys held true to certain day-one aspects of itself. Cole was a time traveler from a ruined future, trying to stop the end of the world. He was the muscle for Dr. Katarina Jones (wondrous Barbara Sukowa), the kind of brilliant scientist who tries saving the world but invents something that can only destroy it. In our not-quite-ruined present, he met Cassie, an ideal partner, and Jennifer, a jovial madwoman locked into the very fabric of space-time. In the dark future, he hung out with best pal Ramse (Kirk Acevedo), and morally ambiguous frenemesis Deacon (Todd Stashwick)." -- Darren Franich, EW reviewer, in July 6, 2018 Entertainment Weekly article titled "12 Monkeys had one of the great series finales"

I surprised that even

Spoiler

KA returning in a rather small role, probably because he was busy with Arrow

actually got me excited in the moment. Idk, I actually understood everything that was going on (although I was obsessively watching and keyed into the fandom almost the whole time) except a bit in the very end, but one of the ending lines made the slight confusion fine with me. I loved it.

I’ve become very leery of Syfy shows; they’re apt to get cancelled without warning.  But now that I know it got a good ending, I’m more interested in watching it.

I can’t recommend 12 Monkeys highly enough. Interesting story and great character development along with consistent characterization made it so fun to watch. And the ending was the icing on the cake.

To be fair, Russia was the lowest ranked team in the tournament - lower than Saudi Arabia.  That they both made it this far AND it went to kicks from the mark, is huge.  They were on a storied run, and at this point no one really wanted to play them.  It reminded me of the wave that Iceland rode in the Euros.

That said, this is coming from a very bitter American that can't stand our soccer system, and is actively rooting for a France/England final.  YMMV.
