haha I am a hard core "Comic Canon!!!!!" shipper of Victoria and Albert but I must admit Rufus Sewell is a VERY compelling Lord Melbourne. Something tragic and sad about the man (good sad not lame sad).

Paul Bettany was kinda shifty as Melbourne in Young Victoria, I kinda wondered if they were trying for anything in that but he came off as shady so I just waited for Albert to appear.

Don't like all the downstairs drama. I'm fast forwarding it.

Yeah I could take or leave the downstairs drama; it's so Downton Abbeyish when in reality the palace of that size during that time would have had hundreds and hundreds of staff not like 6 people. Also the staff characters are no where near as endearing or likeable as the Downton Abbey staff anyway. I'm hoping in season 2 they focus primarily on Victoria and Alberts relationship and the political climate and changing times.

So despite the less than stellar reviews for the pilot episode of Hooten and the Lady, I still gave it a watch and while it's nothing special, it's also not worse than a lot of the crap I've been watching this summer (The Gong Show anyone?)  so I probably will keep it on my DVR list.  Right now it's mostly "treasure" hunts plus bickering.  Last week it was Romancing the Stone, this week it's more the Divinchi Code.  I do actually like the "lady" but Hooten is pretty much a blank slate right now, kind of too meh for me to like or dislike.  The show does get points for use of film locations.  When they said they were in Rome, you could see that yes, they really did film at least a bit of the episode in Rome.  I doubt they were in the Amazon for the first episode but it was at least someplace tropical.  I've become used to the same four alleys and a handful of warehouses so all these fabulous location shots are a reason to watch all on its own. ;)

Ok I may have felt like I was on the verge of being sniffly when Melbourne was in his dapper green jacket thingy and telling Victoria she had to keep her heart for someone else!

ALBERT NEEDS TO SHOW UP SO I DO NOT ABANDON CANON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was rooting for Lord M as well but Albert wormed his way in until I was happy.  I think you will be happy too.

I don't know. I think you should be happy with Albert. It might take an episode or two to get over Melbourne but I was personally very happy with the Victoria and Albert romance by the end.

They won't make a movie of it but I'd love to see a production about King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon. Theirs sounded like an adorable love story too.

I find it so odd a bunch of the royals seemed to have married for love and then they had the Charles/Diana debacle.

Kings Speech is probably the closest for George and Elizabeth. You have to remember in the case of Victoria and Albert even though they loved each other very much it was still pretty much an arranged marriage.

I think with Charles and Diana it was basically Prince Phillip who pushed him to marry Diana because they felt it was important Charles marry a virgin. Even though I know Charles was as much a victim of circumstances I don't think I'll ever be able to think of him as anything but an adultorous creep who used an innocent girl as a baby factory while he expected her to tolerate his cheating ways in silence and now rumoured it wants to give his former mistress the title of Queen when he ascends the throne and expect his children to bow down to the woman who played a part in destroying their parents marriages and arguably emotionally their mother......I get very up in my feelings when it comes to the Charles/Diana/Camilla thing haha.

Albert has arrived!

Lord M slayed me with another speech at the end of episode 3! I don't necessarily ship Lord M and Victoria but I just want poor sad Lord M to be happy *wails*

Anyone here know when people in general decided that marrying your cousin was a bad idea? Did they get some research done, was there a study or something that finally convinced everyone to stop marrying people you were related to?

Did normal people marry their cousins?

Like if you were a peasant would you marry your peasant cousin?

I get the impression it was pretty common for a long time, but maybe that had to do with options and exposure.  In a village or a small town, I imagine for some families nearly everyone was a cousin of some kind.  And I also imagine family get togethers had those of marriageable age taking notice.

Einstien married his first cousin on his mother's side but she was ALSO his second cousin on his dad's side so sounds like mom and dad were already doing the cousin by marriage thing.

I was relieved to learn that Franklin Delano and Eleanor Roosevelt were only fifth cousins, but it's always odd IMO when two people that share the same last name get married.

We previously discussed upthread the departure of Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim from Hawaii Five-O. Here's the latest casting news for that show (pics of new cast members in article)...

Less than three weeks after the news broke that original cast members Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park (who played Chin Ho and Kono) were exiting ahead of Season 8, the CBS procedural has promoted longtime recurring player Ian Anthony Dale (aka Kono’s husband Adam) to series regular, while also adding to its ranks Meaghan Rath (Being Human) and relative newcomer Beulah Koale.

A trusted confidant and resource for the team, Adam Noshimuri will be recruited by McGarrett to officially work for Five-0, while Rath has been cast as Tani Rey, a hotel lifeguard who was kicked out of the Police Academy, despite being a first-rate candidate. (Word of the actress’ casting leaked last week as lookie-loos snapped photos of her filming scenes with Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan at a hotel pool.)

Koale will play Junior Reigns, a former Navy SEAL who has just returned from serving his country and asks McGarrett for a job.

Damnit I only have 3 eps of Victoria left and I was under the illusion that there was 10 eps in a season not 8!!!!!!!

They handled the Lord M stuff pretty well while transitioning to Albert. It was sad but really sweet, especially since it wasn't canon! Very well done!

I want to see Albert raise his kids and shake up the household. He apparently ran the nursery for his kids exceptionally well that's why they all survived into adulthood. I love a man who is hands on in raising his kids! *swoons*

I'm curious how they will show Victoria as a mother since some historians have said that she was indifferent and even didn't like a lot of her children or being a mother. She was far more invested in her relationship with her husband then with those of her children.

9 kids right?

So many!!!!!!! So so so many!!!!!!

They'll probably soften it a bit. Plus everything they did in those days would probably be regarded as abuse these days!

Wait, so I haven't read ASLaS yet (I try to hold off for completion if I don't know/trust the writer), but it's set in the mid 1800's, right?  What exactly is Felicity refusing to wear under her dress?  I mean, it wasn't uncommon for women to be crotchless back then.  And what we think of as underwear or panties didn't show up until the last century.  Now she would have needed to wear something, but there wasn't much besides yards of fabric between a girl and the wide world.  The regency period was even more wild.

That's a fascinating blog.  And terrifying.  About Princess Charlotte's death in childbirth and the changes to medical practice:

Quote

Charlotte  began her pregnancy as a healthy and robust young woman, but after months of blood-letting and a strict diet, an accepted medical practice prescribed by her physician, Sir Richard Croft, she grew feeble. Her death after her tortuous two-day, 50-hour labor would precipitate a new age in medicine,

========

After 50 hours, Princess Charlotte delivered a stillborn 9-pound son. His head had been in a sideways position and was too large for her pelvis. After the delivery Charlotte seemed to do well at first, and she was even given some port wine to drink after two days without food (she mentioned later that the alcohol made her tipsy), but after several hours she became restless, had difficulty breathing, and her pulse became rapid and feeble. She developed malaise and weakness, followed by somnolence then agitation, with progressive worsening and death. Five and half hours after her delivery she died from post partum haemorrhage and shock. Three months after this event, Sir Richard Croft committed suicide

I had a great time playing there.

I don't watch The 100, have zero stake in anything, but I kinda of want Bellarke to end up together because EC is unprofessional and awful to that fandom.

I don't watch that show either but I saw a gif earlier where they were asked about Bellarke and she actually rolled her eyes and said "Oh, here we go again." That is so unprofessional! I can't believe anyone would behave that way towards fans. The rudeness!

Uhm, who's EC?

LOL I meant ET for Eliza Taylor but I mixed her and her characters names.

I wonder how the chemistry plays out on screen then if that actress is so against it.

Does she wear Oliver's stank face that he has in all the Oliver/Laurel scenes?

I only watched the first season and it seemed fine. I don't see the NOTP face in gifs I see.

Ahhh, thanks! I looked up and down the IMDB cast list to figure it out, LOL! I thought it might have been Erica Cerra but wondered why she'd be reacting. I tried to watch The 100, never got past 5-6 episodes of first season. Not my cup of tea. But yeah, that kinda sucks. Don't like the ship? Smile and just nod your head. Or just smile. Don't knock your fans.

She rules her eyes, grumbles, makes faces when she's asked about them.

Like SA hates Oliver and Laurel, but he tries to be diplomatic. EC doesn't even attempt it.

She loves Clexa, the ship where Clarke and her people were betrayed by Alexa and left to die In the second season Bellarke has their problems but from what I remember Bellamy never left her to die. I'm sorry but if you love someone like Lexa claims she did for Clarke you don't do what she did. In fact I'm not a fan of Clexa or Bellarke

The second season of The 100 was really strong but I only got half way through season three.  They kill too many characters off.  I get the impression it's not a happy set.

The second season was by far the best season. I've watched the whole series so far. Your impression that it's not a happy set is very likely true.

The Supergirl cast just sang a song mocking Supercorp and Supercorp shippers that did not go down well.

Such a shame. As a watcher of the show I can't stand Karamel and like Supercorp better. Mon-el was a  show eater and the way they made Kara act like a teenager who only needs him and her blog and changed her personality for this Doucheboy was upsetting.  They isolated her with Mon-el a lot as well

Weird random question: Wherever you are from, is passionfruit popular there?

As a flavor it is very common but I don't see the fruit very often in the supermarket. I should add I do see it more frequently at the Asian/Hispanic supermarkets.

I would guess the fruit is more common in Hawaii or Florida.

^ That's pretty cool. I forgot that SDCC is still happening today since Sundays are usually pretty low-key and not as eventful as the Friday/Saturday panels.

I just saw the teaser that HBO released for Westworld and, man, I can't wait for that show to come back! Why does 2018 have to be so far away? I know I shouldn't compare because HBO's productions are far better than anything CW could ever aspire to but Westworld was able to cobble together a pretty cool teaser with just 6-7 short scenes (after only a week or so of filming, from what I've read), while Arrow really served us that lukewarm S6 trailer with an episode and a half of filming already done because Guggie and company are so determined to pretend that everyone died in the island explosion or whatever the h*ck. Hmph.

Couldn't get into Westworld after 5 eps. None of the characters appealed to me and I was struggling to care about anything going on other than hating the man in black.

I totally get it but I will say that Thandi Newton's (who was absent at SDCC ?) storyline gets pretty interesting. The Man in Black actually was my least favorite storyline as well.

I didn't like the Man in Black, either, and, as talented as Ed Harris is, I just couldn't care less about his character. I felt so vindicated that he turned out to be

William/"Billy" but older (lmao at the "William" characters being the worst at most of the shows I watch/watched--Arrow, X-Files, Westworld)

because that other character's storyline was also tiresome.

I got attached to Delores and Maeve pretty early on then Teddy and Bernard, and the whole concept/philosophy about the hosts after I let it marinate in my head. I binged the whole show in 2 nights, though, knowing absolutely zero spoilers so I feel like that made my experience watching it much better than having to wait for episodes weekly and having a longer time to get tempted by spoilers on the web.
