Regarding the Disney-Fox deal:

46 minutes ago, Sakura12 said:

They would now own a controlling share in Hulu but the other shares belong to Comcast and Warner Brothers. They probably would not want to share with those two. I would think they would still make their own streaming service that would allow some Hulu content to be available on it.

This Variety article seems to think Disney will try to buy out Comcast and TW, although still saying that they will be setting up theirs own service.

Quote

The deal also gives Disney majority control of Hulu, as Disney also owns a 30% stake in the streaming giant. But that sets up a potential clash over the direction of the company with Comcast and Time Warner, who together own the remaining interest in Hulu. The expectation is that Disney will try to buy out those stakes, although Comcast may not be inclined to sell given that Disney intends to launch its own OTT services to compete with cable and other MVPDs.

TVLine disagrees: (underlining mine)

Quote

Will Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox impact its plans to launch an OTT streaming service to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu?
As a matter of fact, Disney has been working on not one, but two distinct streaming services. The first, focused on sports, is expected to launch in 2018; the second entertainment-based streamer is on track for 2019. As part of the merger, Disney is acquiring a vast library of TV properties produced by 20th TV, including, but not limited to: This Is Us, American Horror Story, Empire, Modern Family, The Simpsons and Family Guy. Also part of the deal are shows produced by cable division Fox 21 Television Studios, such as Homeland and The Americans. While current streaming and syndication rights would need to be restructured, it’s not unfathomable that some of these properties (specifically, more family-friendly offerings like Modern Family) could wind up on Disney’s entertainment streaming service. This, of course, only entails back catalogs, and would not impact the home of new episodes.

Doesn’t Disney already own a stake in Hulu?
Yes, but the deal now gives Mickey majority control of the streamer, with a 60-percent stake in the company. Disney might attempt to buy out co-owners Comcast/NBC Universal and Time Warner, and consolidate all of their streaming efforts into expanding Hulu, but such a deal seems unlikely. In fact, Disney chief Bog Iger addressed this issue during a conference call on Thursday, indicating that Hulu would be used as the streaming home for acquisitions deemed as “adult-oriented product” from networks like FX.

So last week The Great American Baking Show premiered its third season with two new episodes.   I rarely bake but I really enjoy the format of that show as well as the British version I've seen on PBS.  But now one of the judges (not the guy from the British show) is caught up in sexual harassment allegations so they pulled the rest of the episodes from the line up with no plans to ever air them.

I'm so mad on behalf of the contestants and of course myself and any viewers that wanted to watch.  The stupid judge is the least interesting part of the show.  He's input is so minimal to the actual product produced.   Johnny Luzzini is one half of the judging team, the LESSER half, he's not the host, he's not the star of the show.  He's barely a focus and yet because he's another in a long line of crappy human beings his taint means everything on the show is ruined.  Grrr

@BkWurm1 seriously???!!!! *shakes fist*

I was wondering why there were no episodes besides the first ep and my sister was bugging me about it! I am so bummed now! Lil Sis and I were looking forward to it as the Canadian Baking Show is wrapping up in 2 more eps. Grrrrrr

Do you watch Top Chef? That's always pretty good!

How is everyone's Christmas prep coming along?

Only one week left!!!! I am freaking out! Haven't even finalised my menu yet! Good with presents though which is amazing considering I am a terrible gift giver with everyone except my own child (disorganised and a bad wrapper! Also lose gifts before they make it to the recipient!).

Getting all my grunt work done! Tonight I'm making peach cobblers to freeze and store to give guests as presents (one cobbler per family unit). Resting right now because I've just peeled 3 kgs of peaches and am over it! Going to make sponges for my trifle some time tomorrow.

I'm holding out on grocery shopping for the event (even though I worry that I might regret this) because I have no room in the fridge to store things for days before I cook them. I have hoarded cream though. One year there was no cream three days before Christmas! Freaked me out ever since.

@BunsenBurner I've got to make your cake and freeze mid next week because a few of the guests are chocolate addicts so it's probably one of the few times a year I will serve chocolate cake.

My Christmas is now complete. All my packages arrived safely. The most important one came a couple of hours ago and is a healthy and beautiful girl for the youngest of my brothers. He and his wife are exhausted but happy. I can now go skiing.

Half of my packages haven't arrived and I was lucky enough to be laid off last week.   (I mean that seriously,  I hated that place but needed a reason to find new work.)  But my tree finally got up,  I got a white pine instead of Douglas fir and I'm not sure if I like them or not.   It's pretty,  but not great for hanging ornaments.   I also got it cut too short and had to cut it again in my living room,  it's as close as I'm ever going to get to cutting my own tree.

Lol I swear you're so similar to my husband! He loved the ring as well. Told me he was jealous of me as soon as he had a chance to examine it up close. I actually thought of him when I picked it out. It's the kind of ring I'd buy him if he was the wifey.

Oh I wish I could pretend to being so clever.  Nope, I just love that ring.  It's a color I would have fought for and I love the curved line of diamonds (or diamond looking chips) leading to and framing it and it's even a pretty rose gold for extra interest.  It's just shockingly lovely.

You are an excellent gift giver.  You are lucky to have yourself, lol.  ;D

The Last Jedi is AMAZING!!! Seriously you do go through every emotion. It was also a lot more humorous than recent Star Wars. I feel like it captured the essence of the original first 3 movies. I went with a friend who had never seen Star Wars and she thought it was fabulous. I think it had something in there for everyone. While I do think all the actors are great. I did find Adam Driver whiny at times, but perhaps that is just the Adolescent Anakin coming out in him. I thought the same thing about Hayden Christensen. Or maybe its a middle movie thing.

And I do love both the Porgs! Although I must admit I am still more partial to the Ewoks. The Ice Foxes were gorgeous. On another note, I still love R2D2. But BB-8 is really stealing my heart in every scene. Now I want my own droid. :)

I do truly wonder though how Carrie Fisher's real life death will impact the next movie,

Spoiler

it seems like they might need to make adjustments. Not really a spoiler, but did want people thrown one way. I was really surprised they did not kill her in this film for logistical purposes. I was expecting her death at any moment. I wonder if she has filmed enough for the next movie. Or if they are going to use technology to put her in. Either way its a shame, because CF brought such a presence & heart to the films, nothing can replace her. I missed her when she was offscreen.

I did miss Han Solo greatly. I love how Rey was not over it either.

I was wondering why it was not on. :( I almost wish there was a way they could go back and edit him out. I mean they must have enough footage of contestants and interviews. Unless they are giving baking advice/tips the hosts/judges' comments are the least important part of the show. We would miss some judge's commentary, but you could have a disclaimer during show that parts were edited out. In some ways it might bring more attention to the problem. Sort of like the box of Mario Batali pasta that was smashed and punched in the grocery store last night.

I miss when Nia Vardalos & Ian Gomez did it. I felt like they at least brought personality. Although nobody can replace Mary Berry.

Disney has said that Carrie Fisher didn't film anything for Episode IX, and they THANKFULLY have no plans to create a digital performance aka Rogue One.

I thought Adam Driver was being whiny on purpose, just as in The Force Awakens. This Emo Kylo Ren twitter account (https://twitter.com/KyloR3n) seems to sum up the character pretty well.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Earns $450 Million in Global Opening Weekend
BRIAN GALLAGHER    12.18.2017
https://movieweb.com/star-wars-last-jedi-450-million-box-office-opening-weekend/

Quote

Long before Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters, the sequel was expected to be a huge hit, with projections putting the domestic debut at $200 million and the global box office debut at $425 million. It turns out that the movie over-shot both projections, taking in $220 million at the domestic box office and $450 million worldwide. That tally is good for the fifth best global opening weekend of all time, and the second biggest domestic debut of all time, just behind the $247.9 million record-breaking performance from 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We reported last week that the super low Rotten Tomatoes audience score was even lower than Justice League, which was quite surprising given how positive the actual critic reviews were. However, it seems many of those may have created user reviews may have been fake, with "bots" writing these reviews instead of actual moviegoers. It remains to be seen if these fake news reviews will be cleared out to give fans a more accurate user review score, or if these bots will continue unchecked. Regardless, the fake users didn't stop the movie from becoming a huge success.

Currently, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes' critics score is 93% and audience score is 56%...

I haven't seen the movie yet and therefore haven't had the conversation to go with the comment, but a geek guy friend of mine saw it and said he'd spent the weekend in discussions about it and was blown away by the number of people that actually thought it was any good.  I'm really curious if it's just a backlash at who was at center stage most of the time.  He's a friend, but he does often have the old school male fanboy expectations.  I wonder if the part that the critic are praising that make it a complex emotional roller coaster is the part that fans like him are dismissing as not good.

Tbh I don't think that's it (and have gotten into massive fights with people who just dismiss some criticisms that I agree with as "fanboy tears"). I think there's just this stark partisanship of people who love the movie who bully people who don't and vice versa while a majority of the people just genuinely liked the movie. It's why I kind of have a problem with some media trying to dismiss people who disliked the movie or try to brush them with the same brush (the VF article did it much better, but even they started with the worst aspects of people who had problems with the movie before ending it with "well, everyone can have their opinions") since it makes the gap bigger rather than actually addressing the different reactions to the movie.

From some of the reactions I've seen, I think some people came into The Last Jedi with certain expectations that were not fulfilled. Which happens, but I think more so with event films like this one, where at least some fans feel very possessive of the franchise/its characters.

And, well, speaking as someone who liked the film, thought it was probably the best shot film in the franchise since The Empire Strikes Back (I'm hoping it picks up a cinematography nod at the Oscars), and loved the last 30 minutes, I'd be the first to admit that it's hardly flawless.  So some criticisms were inevitable.

Saw it with a group of friends. We were all Star Wars fans in our 20s but have kinda drifted away from it. So we went in with no expectations, no fan theories or such, and the general consensus was that it was a fun and enjoyable film — everybody liked it — but it wasn't a great film. That there were some incredible moments but that it also felt very choppy.

Like @quarks said, though, the cinematography is just beautiful.

Quick question:  Did anyone every figure out a solution for how to stop the fact that pages jump up and down (and up and down some more) when you land on them?  I find that I click on a thread, wait about 10 -15 seconds for the jumping to stop, and then can start reading.  This happens on all my computers and devices on all browsers.

I know it has to do with the page loading process.  I don't remember if it is tied to the site or to an add on or what.   I would try the Previously Bugs page where you can post the problem as a new topic and get any info the site has on the problem and or they can look into it.   http://forums.previously.tv/forum/698-bugs/

I've posted over there a few times when there've been issues and always have had a good experience.

This is the info they would like:

I thought it ended up not being a bug, but was just caused by having to wait for graphics on the page to load (pics, Twitter, etc.).  More stuff on a page, the jumpier and longer it takes.  Seems to depend on device, as well.  My kindle takes much longer to load on graphics heavy pages than my desktop.

Question for UKers on the board.

Is crocheting a big thing in the UK? I've been YouTubing crocheting tutorials and majority of them are UK ladies.

Ooh are you crocheting????

I was super crazy about it many moons ago but my tension was terrible so I ended up with a scarf that started out a certain size, shrank and then grew big again because my tension was all over the place.

Then I did squares in an attempt to make a blanket which fared better but I'm a disaster at crafty things so all I have out of that venture is about 20 balls of wool that remind me of how shameful I am for not finishing craft projects!

That's reassuring. I've seen some of their CGI reincarnations and I don't want that for Leia, although I do really hope we get a good goodbye.

I agree AD was acting whiny on purpose. I just find that type of character annoying and non-compelling. I would have been happier if they had found another way to tell his journey. Unlike other actors, I don't think AD has that special factor that makes his whiny emo-ness watchable and appealing. Some actors can pull it off, AD cannot even if it was supposed to his character.

I agree. I do think going in with little expectations of character, plot & theories is the best. I mean I've been watching Star Wars since I was a kid and consider myself a fan, but I am definitely not part of the diehard fandom. I can imagine that people might be disappointed with aspects of the film if they feel heavily invested in the franchise. While I think it was an amazing movie there are certainly evident flaws noticeable. It is not a perfect film. And I truly believe one can enjoy the film immensely and still be critical. And any franchise that has as many decades of history, story and fans is certainly more prone to criticism from fans and non-fans. Overall though I think the film was an enjoyable experience.

Yeah I have the same problems, I also pull the stitches too tight. I'm making a baby blanket for my cousin who's having a boy in June. I found a nice simple pattern from a UK lady on YouTube. Going well so far.  This is my second baby blanket, I mafe one years ago but I had the same issues you had. I ended up doing the square patches like you. The blanket came out OK but, I want to learn more and try different things.

My ultimate goal are these gloves, they're so cool.

I did find a nice elderly lady who could knit/crochet entire items in 2 days so now I buy my items off her instead! She also sources great yarn! It started with her trying to teach me how to knit the kidlet a plush toy crab by following a pattern. We gave up after it was clear I had no idea what she was trying to explain to me so she knitted me the crab in 3 days!!!!!!!!
