S03.E05: The Secret Origin Of Felicity Smoak

Episode Synopsis:

 

 

When a cyber attack brings Starling City to its knees, Oliver and Felicity are pushed to their limits to contain the destruction. Life gets even more complicated for Felicity when her mother stops by for a surprise visit. Ted Grant questions Laurel’s motives. Thea buys an apartment with Malcolm’s 'estate' money.

I didn't appreciate how they showed scenes of Oliver/Roy, Laurel/Ted, and Thea/Malcolm sparring and then had Thea ask "What do normal people do on their day off?" Next scene is Felicity working out.  Felicity is not normal, she's remarkable.  Am I right?

 

Mama Smoak was adorable. I wasn't sure about the casting when it was announced, but I loved her!  The scene where she was telling Felicity that there was none of her in Felicity was heartbreaking :(

 

Laurel got a little vicious with the cop who was trying to tell her that she didn't have the authority to give out orders.  "I'm acting District Attorney!"  How the hell was that guy supposed to know when you found out literally five minutes earlier? 

 

Another perfect opportunity for Laurel to tell her dad about Sara was squandered.

 

Oh my gosh, I loved Felicity ripping the gun out of Cooper's hands and pistol whipping him with it!!!  Awesome.

 

Ha, Felicity telling Oliver, "Turns out he wasn't as dead as I thought" and Oliver admitting he has some experience with that. 

 

Oh God, I hope Roy didn't really kill Sara.  That would just be so dumb.

 

This felt so much like the Arrow I used to love.  Easily my favorite episode since season 2A.  Sadly, next week I'm back to reading comments before watching.  Like some others here, I think that the only other episode that I can stomach watching live is the crossover episode.

The story was pretty silly even by Arrow standards but I don't care because Felicity. Lots of Felicity. Excellent, wonderful Felicity. Can we just have a Felicity spin-off? Possibly a sitcom. Emily wants to do comedy after all and that way Donna can be in it too.

There's got to be some serious brainwashing going on.  Malcolm has to have Thea brainwashed, and someone (guessing a still alive Tommy) has to have Roy brainwashed.  The Merlyns want to completely destroy Team Arrow, and more importantly take everything away from Oliver before killing him.

 

Someone for all that is good, tell Quentin that his daughter is dead.  He can't grieve and he can't help Laurel.  Just let him know, hell Ted Grant should go to Quentin and let him know.

 

Routh's reaction to Felicity's mom screaming was hilarious.  As was Oliver's reaction to the baby.

All I wanted from this episode was for Felicity to save herself, and she did. So much appreciation for that. She was damseled FOR herself too, and not for anyone else. It's so earned to her journey.

 

The tone of the entire episode was exactly like the tone I loved so much from 201 to 209 -- the drama and the angst and the feelings well-balanced with moments of lightness, and warmth, and HOPE. 

 

Also, can we keep Mama Smoak? Pretty please?

I was all on a happy felicity glow and then it was bam, laurel. Bam Thea. Bam, Barrowman (is Thea really inviting her brother to live with her where Malcolm can keep an eye on her). And super bam, wtf is up with Roy.

So I'm going to ignore all of that and stick with my happy felicity thoughts. Loved it, loved it all. Backstory, mom goodness, creepy ex, Oliver so so wanting to hug her in the most ridiculous way. Um ray was also there.

I liked Felicitys mom and I guess we have confirmation her dad is a genius who will presumably show up in some capacity in the future.

The only thing it was missing was felicitand Diggle bonding. I hope the show doesn't think emphasizing olicity means they are allowed to drop digicity(?) scenes.

Eta, I also loved Felicitys apartment and the scene with Ray was actually cute, but dude. Boundaries.

I could barely make it through last weeks episode, but I didn’t want this one to end. It felt like late S1/early S2 Arrow goodness, with actual human emotions and stuff!

 

Like a lot of people, I wanted a Felicity-centric episode so desperately, and I have to give the writers credit for not letting me down. My Felicity love is reaching a level that frankly scares me.

This cast is so bloated already, and yet, I would give anything to have Donna be a recurring character. In 5 seconds, she brought so much light and fun to this dreary season. She and Felicity were perfection together. I’ll be spending the rest of the week trying to deal with all my feels after the scene in Felicity’s office. Nothing this entire season has moved me as much as that scene. Charlotte Ross brought so much depth to Donna, and I know I’m gushing uncontrollably, but I can’t help it. Also, I want her Mondrian luggage.

 

I need more of her. So much more. And can you imagine getting to see her interact more with Oliver and Diggle? Their scene in Verdant was comedy gold. And I miss seeing Team Arrow get to be funny and quippy. I’ll be laughing at “Who’s she gonna tell?” forever.

 

I only wish Cooper’s motive had been bigger and more sinister than merely wanting money. I was hoping it would be tied into a bigger conspiracy, but you can’t have everything.

 

Wow at that ending, though. I’m sure it’s misdirection, but I kind of loved it.

 

Also, my girl can save herself (and her mama), thank you very much! That was awesome.

I was actually a little nervous about this episode. I thought, "I haven't really seen Felicity on Arrow since, honestly, it feels like the first episode of the season.  What if I've mis-remembered her awesomeness?  What if she's not as great as I think she is?"  And then there was the first scene with her doing sit ups and brushing her teeth and reacting to Ray in her apartment and drinking coffee right after she'd spit out the toothpaste (yuck) and then reacting to her mom in her apartment and I was like, "I love her so much."

 

I SO enjoyed this episode.  More, please.

Great episode nice mix of action and humor. A little bit predictable, I knew the watch would play into the rescue. Loved Team Arrow working together. Freaking loved Mama Smoak!

I'm so happy that not only did Felicity figure out how to call in the calvary but she also saved herself from Cooper.

The flashbacks were great, I really enjoyed the felicity/cooper prison scene, it was sad to see them so broken hearted it worked really well to set up the twist.

The Felicity/Mom fight was beautiful and sad but wonderful to watch. Great acting by EBR and Charlotte Ross, im glad they made up but, I gasped when Felicity said her mom dressed like a porn star, that was low.

Sad but I think Thea is playing Oliver. I did like their scenes together though. Also, I don't think the ending is real, I think it's another fakeout/dead end.

The Roy killing sara is definitely a red herring imo. Someone's playing mind games with him. 

 

I thought this episode was okay. The story was extremely silly and soapish lol. I loved mama Smaok and I'm glad Felicity saved herself and love her interactions with her mother. however I thought the action sequences were poor.

 

Also sidenote Ray is probably like the best boss ever. Felicity never has to work lol.

I love that Laurel said she couldn't tell anyone about Sara's death right as she's, you know, telling someone about Sara's death, haha. AND NOW THE ONLY PERSON WHO DOESN'T KNOW IS HER FATHER, AND I'M ANGRY, OKAY. Also, choosing the black? Hit me right over the head with it, show.

 

They're obviously setting up Roy to be the next false target, and I guess this is how the mirakuru issues get introduced?

 

Can I just say that I loved Oliver in this ep? He was his typical demanding, kind of assy self, with real moments of heartfelt sincerity. That's when I like him best. I thought he was going to wind up moving in with Thea. That's a nice place, too. They need curtains though, Oliver should know that nothing good ever happens when he's hanging out in front of windows without curtains.

 

I wanted to give Ray a fair shot, but I'm over him. He's creepy, lacks boundaries, and is not cute at all. Mama Smoak better rid herself of that watch - there's probably a tracker in it.

 

Felicity. FELICITY. God, the writers really did right by her and I'm so happy. I'm so happy she saved herself, and I loved her relationship with her mom. Mama Smoak wasn't at all like I expected, and I mean that in the best possible way. Charlotte Ross was adorable.

Adored this episode. If I was ever to introduce someone to Arrow I would use this episode. 

 

However, I am not sure what they want me to see in Ray. I watched hoping for a good reason for him to be at Felicity's apartment. I could only come up with he doesn't sleep because of drugs and therefore makes bad decisions. Like not recognizing he shouldn't be at an employee's house so early in the morning. Was it a weekday? Regardless of if he could have just waited until she arrived at work or it was a weekend; call first. 

 

BR is too mature looking to be pulling off the socially awkward which might have made his appearance at her apartment a comedic moment. Instead it was a bit more cringe-worthy. Also Felicity disappears to her office to cry? He just shows up?  

 

How many times are these writers going to use the word "stalker?" At least it worked for Mama Smoak as she is supposed to be a bit rough around the edges. 

 

That is all. Almost everything else was sheer perfection. Apparently Laurel barking orders is a thing and not just Cassidy's acting choice? Either that or they wrote it in to turn down the criticism.

Happy times 20! That's how I feel about this ep. I loved loved loved Felicity being front and center. I thought the opening montage highlighted just why so many people love Felicity -- because she's not about ass kicking. She's all smarts and heart. It's something an every day person can be. I loved her back story and how it deepened her and Oliver's relationship. I also think it's super interesting that Oliver is the more emotional of the two. First two years, all emotion went to Ms. Smoak, but now we have Ollie saying "And you know how I feel about her." Love love love! We know Felicity is the one holding herself back right now and it's just such an interesting reversal.

I also want to say that even though I was worried that Laurel was going to be Mary Sued into the Black Canary role with a quickness, I do appreciate that she's not that great of a fighter yet (I know, it's only been like a week, but I thought she'd be a boxing savant or something), and they do still have her making terrible decisions, like sending in the riot squad.

 

I'm also glad that Diggle FINALLY COVERED HIS FACE. I know it's probably because they were dealing with armored cars and whatnot, but thank you for showing some sense finally.

I loved almost everything about this episode. First one in quite awhile that almost completely worked. Unfortunately, every scene with Laurel was a weird jolt that just threw off the tempo of the rest of the show. I don't think I've ever seen a show have this much trouble integrating a main character into the show. Kate is just a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. It's never going to work. Oddly enough, even Roy clicks with the rest of the show now as does Ray. It's so odd.

Charlotte Ross is still amazing! I've followed her since Days of Our Lives and she still just knocks her part out of the park! Good on ya, Casting!

 

This is what I have slogged through four episodes for! This is what I put my metaphorical money down for- friends who care for each other and the city they live in! Cheers, Writer(s) of the Episode!

 

Dig with the "nugget" was great! "Who's she gonna tell, Oliver?" And that look! David Ramsey is pure gold, like that's news in these parts.

 

As a look into Felicity's past, it was a good start. It has me wanting more, is what I'm saying.

 

Another week, another chance for the writers to have Laurel infantilize Quentin. While I understand the officer's questioning of Laurel, why did he not consult someone else in his direct chain of command before dispatching the riot squad? Especially if he was uneasy with sending ESU in the first place? I know, I know; because...writers!

 

I am guessing that the nightmare Roy had is going to lead to the cop-killing revelation? I disbelieve that Roy'd kill Sara. They may not have been the closest of friends, but I really don't see Roy doing that. If it is Roy? I may just be out.

 

I did chuckle when Felicity told Oliver her old Bf/lover couldn't be a suspect because he was dead. Oliver was very polite and did not remind her that he has been wrong about that  state in others a couple of times. I am glad that things seemed to be more normal between Oliver and Felicity. A less emotionally jangly Team Arrow is better for the show and individual episodes. (Not that tension between members is bad, but unresolved, drawn-out-for-bs-reasons tension isn't welcome for me.)

 

Ray inadvertently saves the day! Rah!! I liked that he seems genuinely pushing to rebuild the city and make it better. Maybe Team Arrow can get sponsorship and electric motorcycles while they're at it? *g* (Harley has one, so it'd even be patriotic! )

 

I want to meet ARGUS' idea of a nanny. Obviously, Lyla  and Diggle-approved, but still. Is it Floyd? *g*

 

Malcolm wants to inspire fear? Keep wearing that quilted whatever jacket.

 

Also, can we keep Mama Smoak? Pretty please?

 

She can work at Thea's club? Maybe? Instead of Roy, who I love, but Donna'd bring so much more.

Right now, I love everything about this episode -- Felicity being really smart and saving herself, Donna being adorable and then strong, Diggle with Sara, Laurel not suddenly making brilliant decisions that save the city, Felicity changing, Oliver making amends with Thea and moving in with her.  I'll even forgive Ray for showing up at Felicity's house in the morning before coffee because they needed to get the watch to Donna.

 

Okay, maybe not Oliver telling Felicity "And you know how I feel about her" because Oliver dear, actions speak louder than words.

 

And I wish Thea had enough money to buy a whole sweater rather than just a half one, even if Willa  Holland has a great body.

 

I think Roy's mind is being mirakuru'd.  I'll be disappointed if it turns out he killed Sara.

Tonight Arrow played to its strengths: Team Arrow, original members with bonus Roy; the action and stunts (come on, Oliver as The Arrow with the motion sensors? All kinds of awesome); Felicity Smoak; and Olicity.

 

This is the show that I love and have missed. More of this, please.

 

ETA: Charlotte Ross as Mama Smoak was an absolute delight. Loved that they gave her character humanity and strength, just like her daughter.

I agree. I am not seeing alternate love interest. He actually steam rolls her. He walks in on her crying and rather than ask if she is ok, he's all we need a drink to commiserate the terrorism. Wouldn't a normal person ask "is Mom ok?" seeing as there was a terrorism attack going on and mom wasn't with her? Sure it is cyber, but transformers were popping off all over the city. I'm not seeing the opposite of Oliver in Ray is aware of Felicity and not focused on the crusade. Ray was so concerned with his alternative energy, he blew into Felicity's apartment first thing in the AM unannounced. 

 

I missed the final few minutes of the show, but I think as long as Felicity and Oliver are on the same TV show they aren't ever  going to bring in viable alternatives.

Days of Our Lives is where Mama Smoak is from. I knew I had seen her somewhere before. She was delightful this episode and really lightened up the show.

I liked Oliver's little jealous bit when talking about Felicity's ex and his not judging her for any past behavior.

But, I have to wonder what Ray sees in Felicity. She must seem like an emotional basketcase and a flake. She's either crying or leaving work with no explanation.

I actually like Brandon in this role. He has the screen presence of a sidekick with movie star good looks if that makes sense.

I will say that wardrobe fell down on the job tonight. What the hell was Felicity wearing at the end of the episode? It was hideous as was Thea's 1/2 shirt.

My favorite episode of the season so far. I don't even care that the story was a bit silly, since the show itself can be overly silly and soapy, because I finally got an actual Felicity-centric episode.  And she saved herself! Thank you writers!

 

I love Mama Smoak, from her inappropriate clothes, to her personality, and her fierce love of her daughter. Can she please come back sometime?

 

College-goth Felicity looked an awful lot like Neil Gaiman's Death. I approve.

 

Ray: best boss ever. I enjoyed seeing him interact with Felicity, and loved his reaction to meeting Mama Smoak and her loud scream.

 

"Who's she gonna tell?" Line of the night.

 

"And you know how I feel about her." You make it really hard on a girl to be irritated with you.

 

Oliver making amends with Thea? Love. Thea technically still lying to Oliver? Also love.

 

Sending in police in riot gear was definitely not Laurel's smartest move. But I did enjoy Quentin and Laurel together, mainly because I love Quentin to no end. And someone please tell him about Sara, for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Poor Oliver, if only he knew that Malcolm Merlyn was deliberating spying on him.  I'm sure that's why Thea invited him to move in, they're both playing him. I wonder how long it well before he finds out.

 

Nolan Funk did a good job as Cooper, nice at first and then really creepy.  I love the line about people not being as dead as you think they are.  Oliver would know.

 

I"m so glad they brought the humor back, and Charlotte Ross hit just the right notes.  "How many millionaires do you know?"  And she hit the right notes in her scenes with Felicity, first about Felicity already having left her, and then later about being a single mother working 60 hours a week in high heels to produce that genius.

Fun episode.  A case of the week episode that provided the much-requested backstory of Felicity.  Well done, show.

 

I liked Mama Smoak too and she and Felicity are adorable together.  Ray was fun too with this, Brandon Routh has been a good addition to this show.

 

I doubt Roy is Sara's killer but that's an interesting development.

Oliver talking about easy it was to mistakenly think people are dead was hysterical. I want this show up on Hulu so I can watch it again immediately. Minus laurel.

And I too noticed the cropped (felicity) and half shirt (Thea) trend this season.

Poor Oliver, if only he knew that Malcolm Merlyn was deliberating spying on him.  I'm sure that's why Thea invited him to move in, they're both playing him. I wonder how long it well before he finds out.

 

Even though Oliver has asshat tendencies and may deserve some of what he has coming, god. The thought of Thea playing him makes me so sad for him. I just want him to be happy. For longer than 20 minutes.

I loved this episode!

It was such a relief to have some lightness after all the gloom we've slogged through recently.

I understand it can't always be rainbows and tiptoes through the tulips but it shouldn't always be giant downers either.

I liked the juxtaposition of Oliver training Roy, Grant training Laurel and Merlyn training Thea, Is it wrong that I cheered when Felicity took down Cooper because she was better at it than Laurel?  Diggle must have been practicing with her, good man!

Is there some reason why Willa Holland can't do fight scenes? Because it is glaringly obvious that it is a stunt double whenever they show Thea training.

I really hope Thea is not doing that (purposefully setting things up so Malcolm can creepily spy on her brother) completely on purpose because it's just awful. I don't want I think about awful things during my beautiful felicity episode.
