Seriously.  Since we can assume most of them will survive this too, the next time any of them dithers about not wanting to go back and finish something I want Rick to simply remind them, "THEY ATE BOB."  No more long drawn out discussion or dragging their feet about it.  That's all the shorthand they should ever need after this.

Yep.  No more dragging their feet.  Rick will just need to put his foot down before anyone else can get a leg up on him.

<<Regarding Maggie's lack of reaction to losing Beth - I agree there's nothing she could do to find her, so I don't hold not looking against her. But I agree the show should have given Maggie something to do to demonstrate grief or angst about losing Beth as well as her father, and finding out that she seems to have been kidnapped.>>

IKR!  Daryl - DARYL! - has been shown grieving, crying, talking, trying, fighting bands of marauders and looking generically contemplative over the disappearance of Beth.  Tara was so torn up over Herschel she had to be convinced to not die in a hail of zombie chomp. Rick was dreaming about Herschel and shot a dude who was wearing his watch.  But Maggie.Can't.Give.A.Damn when it comes to her sister apparently.  If she had completely shut down out of the combined grief and accidentally found Glenn, then I'd excuse it.  But she did all kinds of crap to find him and when she found him seemed to be alright with the world.  I've already been annoyed with the Glenn/Maggie self-centeredness but enough already.  This is an ensemble cast and what keeps it interesting is all the different relationships within.  Rick has his minor children with him, but still manages to CARE about everybody else.  Maggie, right now you suck!

<<the character hasn't made any impact outside of being a potential resting place for Daryl's penis.>>

Seriously, one of the funniest sentences of all time!

I agree completely. Hell, even seeming exhausted and like she can't let herself feel anymore would make sense. Or like she is trying to not think about it because she doesn't know what to do given that they have no idea where Beth is. Just SOMETHING. But right now it's like they forgot that Maggie lost her father and sister at the same time. Maybe there are deleted scenes or something that got cut out. I want to believe there are because it's just too big of an oversight, imo, specially considering that they bothered showing Tara and Maggie interacting.

That's the problem with having too many characters. I want the Eugene group to leave or something, there are just too many now.

Whereas Bob did put his foot down.  Only he did it much too late.  And he put it on the barbecue.  I'll let myself out.  (Thanks for the perfect set up).

I think it's because the writers want us to always see the characters with a certain look, so they don't change clothes like ever.

I think this too. The cast is pretty damned attractive and it is tv. I used to think this when watching LOST as well. That cast was always covered with what I like to call "sexy dirt", and so is this one. So until they come across a "boutique" selling tight leather everything, cargo jeans that fit Maggie's perfect ass just so, and rag & bone tank tops to show off Michonne's gorgeous katana (rip) wielding arms, they ain't changing a thing.

Seriously even though Rick probably smells like a bag of burning turds, I still don't want to see him in a bad church charity drive polo Shirt Just no.

Thank you. Those two bore and irritate me. They're like a couple in a bad fairy tale. Here's Glenn, knocking down the tough army sargeant (as IF!)who is trying to keep him from his True Love! There's Maggie, killing a bunch of walkers with a street sign! Here's Glenn, puffing up and beating his chest like some Super Macho because the Gov might have laid a finger on his property (or maybe he was afraid of her making comparisons, who knows?) I thought I was the only one to not find them sweet and captivating.

ETA: All you people making the toe, foot and leg jokes? Thanks. They're great!!

Great episode but I have to say the telegraph isn't so dead after all because that was hella-telagraphing that Bob's number was up when he got to speak more lines in this one episode than he has since he's been on the show. Also this harkens back to the old Walking Dead rule Fade in one black man and fade out another one.

Absolutley loved everyone chilling out in the church having "thanksgiving dinner" basically. It really did have a feel of family to it. Sadly a few minutes later it was back to the old TWD playbook of splitting the group up with Darryl and Carol charging off in fan service-whoops I meant rescue attempt of Beth.

Tara is my new favorite character since she was relutant at the prison. I'm extremley worried for her winding up in the death pool.

I want to see this dyanamic between her, Glenn and Maggie play out. It feels like there is some intersting under current there.

Eugene continues to be an annoyance but I guess we are stuck with him for the long haul since the DC story is built around him.

I can't figure out what they are doing with Tara.  Its worse than how they write Beth some times.  They went out of the way to have Rick and Maggie welcome Tara into the group and let her know they don't blame her for the Governor.  It felt like they were telling the audience that we need to get on board with Tara being a beloved part of this ragtag family.

They would have been better of keeping Rick's talk with Tara in and then have Maggie lash out at her over Hershel in a way over the top manner.  Then Glenn could have talked to Maggie and revealed that it was really Maggie lashing out because Beth is missing and she can't do anything about it.

I'm starting to see a huge divide in the cast of characters.  Its like they either hit it out of the park (Rick/Carl/Michonne/Daryl/Carol) or they are completely lackluster (Glenn/Maggie/Tara/Comic book trio).  Tyreese, Sasha, and Bob are the only ones kind of in the middle for me because Tyreese has a psychologically interesting inability to kill in a ZA going on, Sasha I'm projecting what happens after Bob is gone, and Bob is in a situation where you really have no choice but to be compelling.

I don't blame Tyreese for Martin.  Martin should be dead.

Gareth was shot in the upper chest or shoulder, and it looks as if nothing happened to him.  He didn't even wince in pain.  To look at Martin, you'd never know that he almost had his skull beaten in.

Obviously eating human flesh provides amazing restorative abilities, which Tyreese couldn't have known about.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and to Walking Dead.  My son got me into it and I binged watched 4 seasons over a long weekend.  Crazy fun!

I've looked around and cannot find an answer to this question.   In "A" we see Hershel/Glenn's watch on the Termite.  But in "No Sanctuary" Maggie checks a pocket watch and uses the chain as part of their make-shift weapons creation.   Can anyone tell me how Maggie got that watch back?  I must've missed something since no one else is talking about this.   THanks!

When Richonne Grixon (Rick, Michonne, Carl Grimes and Daryl Dixon) are on the "tour" with Albert, and Mary is fixing a plate...Rick sees the watch, rips it out of the pocket and gets Albert by the neck with a gun to his head and yells where did you get this watch?! (and the poncho, riot gear, etc.)

Kikismom, you're right, but didn't Gareth's people then strip Rick and crew of all their valuables.  So, it seems, they would have taken the watch back.  Now, we've already theorized that they accidentally missed Carol's watch that she'd given Rick (since it was so small).  But the pocket watch??!!??  So, did I miss something?

Link to comment

I don't think they necessarily stripped Richonne Grixon of their valuables. Bob and crew yes....they came earlier. They probably rounded them up and held them for a day or two, and the natural thievery took place. But with the way Richonne Grixon entered, already on the defensive....I don't think they had time for that. When shit went down, they took their weapons and threw them in the train car. We didn't see them searched. And given Carol's timeline. I think it was only a matter of hours before they came and got the 4 males for the trough. So I don't think they were taking the time to go through everyone's pockets. They wanted to break this group up quickly. Michonne still had her katana shield, Carl still had his hat.

I really would like to eventually hear more about how it went down with Glenn's group - how they were taken, etc. We heard a TINY tidbit from Abraham, but not enough.

Conveying tone is difficult in written words, so let me just say I am NOT being smart assed here. I'm just curious about what part of that is icky and disturbing? I tried to figure it out, but can't. Is it the actual words or...?

I ask because we watch this show and discuss (and make really cool jokes about) a living person having his leg cooked and eaten in front of him, people being devoured by flaming zombies and others having their throats slashed and bleeding out before our eyes, Rick ripping out a man's jugular with his teeth, one child killing another, etc., etc. all of which is well beyond the "Ick" point for me.

I don't know...it wasn't like a prison search because they didn't take belts away, and they didn't take Rosita's earrings. (They didn't take Carl's hat, so they have limits to their desperation. They've sunk as low as cannibalism...but they still have some standards.)

Michonne could have hidden the both watches and an arsenal in her dreads.

Okay, I'm the idiot.  All they took from Rick and crew were the weapons.  The Termites didn't strip search them since they were in too much of a hurry to get them into the boxcar.  They must have known Rick WAS NOT to be trifled with at that point.

Okay, since Jack O'Neill and I just posted the exact same thing (except for the part about him being an idiot) let me edit this post to say that I, too, don't understand what is icky about calling Beth a possible repository for Daryl's penis. As long as it's voluntary frolicking, where's the ick?

I think calling her a possible love interest reduces Daryl to being a schmoopy and makes me picture Beth doodling Beth + Daryl 4Ever in her journal with little hearts around it. If penis repository doesn't work maybe we can just call her the possible slam piece.

The Grixons only stopped fighting long enough for them to take their weapons; none of their valuables. The Get Fresh Crew (Glen, Maggie, Tara, the 3 stooges, and Bobsha) stopped, chatted, met the townsfolk and probably literally ate some "leg of sacrificial lamb" because they are not that quick on the upswing despite them thinking they are.

That is why Michonne still had the holder for her katana

Ahh, I clearly missed where Rick rips the pocket watch out of his pocket before the excitement begins.  That makes sense because you're right, they really didn't search them before putting them in the box car.

Thanks!  And thanks for the welcome kikismom.  Son's been begging for two years to watch this show.  I said "no way."  But he's old enough now, and I am very squeamish but forced myself to watch episode one and was hooked from the moment Rick opened his eyes and saw that vase of dried up flowers.  My son helps me skip the really awful parts.  He has spared me poor Hershel's beheading and the stainless trough of death.  No thanks.   But other than that, I am all caught up.

I wrote the original post and it was a joke.  However I do agree with you that the idea of Daryl's penis resting inside Beth is 'icky and disturbing' because that would mean I would be forced to watch EK attempt to act and I can't think of many things more icky and disturbing than that.

What an excellent complication! Only Glenn and Bob saw what was going on in the abbatoir; when are they going to have the conversation about who ate and what it was? Better not be skipped over.

Okay well, here's another question since you guys have really got this down.   As I said I skipped the trough scene up to where Gareth threatens Bob with the knife to the eye (thank you son).   So I didn't see the details of the deaths.  I'm wondering if the bat to the head was enough to cause sufficient brain damage or if poor Sam and the others will have turned into Zombies off screen?

I would have to rewatch it again, but I'm pretty sure on The Talking Dead they said no one ate the meat, that Abe started sprouting orders about going to Washington and they just put them in the car because they knew there was no turning them.

This is just my take on the whole thing as implied by what happened. I believe the blow to the head is to keep them from fighting back so they can get a clean slash of the throat where they are then put over the tub to "bleed out." I assume these literal man-eaters have done a lot of trail and error and knows how long it takes for someone to turn. Turning seems to be at the convenience of the storyline:

Took Amy all night to turn and she wasn't aggressive afterwards. Basically she was also an annoying useless zombie as she was when she was human

Jim rode halfway to Atlanta with a bite; didn't turn

Shane turned almost immediately and so did Hershel (well at least his head did)

By the time Daryl got to Merle, he was already at a zombie buffett

Bob was able to walk all the way back to the church, have dinner, kiss Sasha, go out in the woods, cry and then send evites to a Bob-b-que (edited to add - assuming he was bit)

I will not even bother mentioning Season 1 zombie who had enough sense to grab a brick to break the glass to get to the original Get Fresh Crew before Officer Friendly saved them

I also feel like TPTB are forcing Tara on us and sorry, I ain't buying it. She will forever be untied bootlace trippin girl. All this admiration for her not firing a shot. PSHAW. She was in shock, hiding behind her girlfriend who shot anything that moved. Anyway this isn't exactly germane to this thread so I'll stop. At some point (hopefully soon) she'll trip headlong into a gaggle of deadies and that'll be that.

Dang, this crowd is TOUGH!!!

I happen to like Tara (not a lot because I don't know her).  But she's different.  LIke Beth in a way, she's coming to grips with the world they're in.  (Remember, Tara was holed up in that apartment for the first several months of the ZA.)  I like seeing how new people react, especially given that our crowd (and we, the audience) are much savvier now.  (I don't know where Tyrese falls, though.)

Well, with Jim and Amy (and maybe Bob) they were were bit, but had to die of the fever first - then come back. But with Shane and Merle, they were killed unrelated to walkers. So maybe that strain of the virus activates immediately upon death.

In the voice-over at the beginning of the season 5 premiere, Abraham says "They seemed nice enough, but I was ready to go. I mean, we just got here, but damn, it was time to go. When I told them about D.C., a wink and a nod from the head asshole-in-charge, they pulled their guns and it was right back to our regularly-scheduled shitstorm."

It really doesn't sound like anyone had time to eat anything.

Nobody inside a car turns. Cars are like zombie kryptonite.

Makes me think of the Jaguar scene in Shaun of the Dead - "Do you have the child locks on?!?!?!?"

It seems like people turn within 5-10 minutes once they are dead.  The longer and more varied timeline is for when people are bitten.  Eventually they succumb to fever and infection, die and come back as walkers.  That might be related to how healthy the person is starting out - it took longer earlier on; now they should be malnourished and generally unhealthy.  Also, where on the body and how deep the bite is - near the head gets the infection the brain faster; deeper gets the infection into the bloodstream more. Then again, it could all be for the convenience of the storyline and drama. Back to over-thinking other things.

Personally, and I'm not speaking for TexasChic here but just for myself, I find it a little "icky" in that it reduces a female character with her own ideas, interests, ambitions, etc., to nothing more than the sexual object of a male character. "Love interest" may be schmoopy but at least it implies mutual feelings and a connection beyond just sexual penetration. I don't know, it's hard for me to make the case for this because I find Emily Kinney's acting leaves a lot to be desired, but the script at least establishes that she's more than just a vagina and that she and Daryl have some affection for one another.
