S01.E06: Resurrection Z

Recommended Posts

Episode Description:

A newly-found utopian enclave may not be all that it seems near Branson, Mo.

Overall, it was a good episode. More serious than the last couple of episodes.

Curious, the episode description says this compound was near Branson, Missouri, but on the show the Resurrection Church was in Hannibal, Missouri -- which is a long ways away from Branson.  Seems like a helluva drive for a little revenge.

Did anyone else think it coincidental that during Citizen Z's summary of Zombie virus causes that the map highlighted several West African countries that are currently the focus of the Ebola outbreak ?  Interesting.

Ummm, what happened to the firetruck they had at the end of last episode ?

Zombies -- will they blend ??  Apparently so.  Mixmaster to full power.

I can't believe they killed Charlie off, but you knew as soon as Charlie/Roberta had sex that one or both of them was going to die this episode.  Glad Roberta killed Jacob.

Murphy is looking rougher and rougher with each episode -- and now the zombies are acknowledging him as one of them.  That can't be good.

Pretty silly and stupid.  That cult was pretty ridiculous.  Jacob was the least charismatic or compelling cult leader I've ever seen.  It was like being in a cult run by the manager at the copy store.

How nice that Roberta and Charlie were in a room with solid concrete walls so he could smash the Zombie's head in.  Either that, or Charlie's good at finding the wooden studs behind the sheet-rock.

That ending was too much of a downer.  Hopefully they don't dwell on Charlie's death too long in the next episode.  But the rest was stupid silliness (not that I'm complaining).

How did Addy get her Thagomizer back?  Oh, why am I even asking.

I initially thought they were doing a camouflage thing, like in the movie World War Z, but it looks like Murphy is now the leader of Zombies.

I also noticed the quick flash of the ebola hot zone when Citizen Z mentioned a plague causing the ZA.

"Murphy is part-zombie now - oh well!". I hope they pay some lip service to what he did next week...

Oh yeah, as soon as the camp leader expositioned about seizing all weapons and the place being "zombie proofed", I saw what was going to happen.

Oh, no!   Bummer.  I have to stop reading the comment thread during commercials.  But that's what happens when you mess with the Catholic girls.

Dammit!  I'm not liking that they killed off Charlie and I might have, just maybe a little, got something in my eyes.  Dust or something.

And I just have to mention the death by hand mixer.  As unbelievable as it was, it was still awesome.  I give extra points to Addie for thinking of it.

10K remains great and I'll be super, duper angry if he gets killed.

Well, crap.  Charlie was the best character and was the one who kept everyone calm and was their decision maker.  What the hell were they thinking?  And why would they kill off one of the main characters this early in the show?  Maybe they're thinking they won't get picked up.  I don't care.  I think it was a bad call.

I got the feeling that Jacob was supposed to be a version of Steve Newlin from True Blood. That creepy eat shit smile he was attempting is what made me think of the comparison. I mean, they've ripped off every other TV show and movie, why not True Blood?  Anyway, I'm glad Roberta left him alive so he could be eaten and then turn.

I'm getting a little nervous about this show now, because I don't understand why they would kill off one of the main characters.  I mean, they killed off Harold Perrineau's character in the first episode, and now Charlie?

I hope it's because the two actors have gotten better roles somewhere else because, in the words of the cute kid in the youtube video who was unhappy that his mom was expecting another child:  "This is exasperating!" and "This don't make no sense!"

I still don't understand how last week in St. Louis they had Roberta pining for her dead firefighter husband while seemingly sacrificing her life to the Znado on last episode, and this episode she's knocking boots with Charlie -- and everyone else in the group seemed to "know about them" as a couple.

It's not like weeks have gone by like the jump between the crazy general and the Znado episode since they are still in Missouri, so maybe a couple of days have gone by.

At first I thought it didn't make sense that one week Roberta is pining for her husband and the next week she's bedding Charlie.  But then I surmised that she got some kind of resolution as far as her husband's fate was concerned and she decided it was time to move on.  If she and Charlie already had something going, maybe this week she finally felt "free" to express her feelings and just let 'er rip.

I don't understand them killing Charlie off either.  This is a one season and done show?  Even though I didn't like the actor much, I thought maybe they would pick up the guy in charge there and then someone could die later and he'd be there to lead.

Murphy standing up, speaking up, and taking charge was awesome.  My jaw dropped.   But now I am a bit worried.  Dude looks terrible, they are killing off the main characters, is this show going to end with everyone dead 1 mile from the gates of the place where they have been headed all this time?

I'd been suspecting it for awhile, but was a little surprised they literally went the zombie Jesus route. I'd read a similar storyline in a zombie book several years back, and have been waiting for the half-turned zombie Jesus to show up in TV/film ever since.

Well there then, you may have just written their ending for them.

Loved Murphy at the end, but man,  I can't believe they kiled Garnett. And the people in that cult are complete idiots.

I've seen this weird spin on the Stockholm Syndrome before. One of the real old Planet of the Apes movies had a bunch of mutated human survivors worshiping the atomic (?) bomb that destroyed their world.

I don't remember it, but that wasn't dangerous anymore, right? I guess the people in this cult couldn't handle the pressure and went crazy, it's the only logical explanation I see.

The movie you are thinking of was called "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" and the bomb that the underworld mutants worshiped was a doomsday device that was active and armed -- by the end of the movie it was detonated and incinerated the surface of the Earth. No happy ending there.

I liked them killing Charlie in that it was showing that the show has balls. Charlie is basically this shows Rick and TWD would never kill off Rick unless Andrew Lincoln was ready to say bye bye. It's just doing something most shows wouldn't do. Also, we have no idea what type of contract Tom Everret Scott and Harold Perineau signed. They probably both agreed to do the show as a one episode/season and done.

I still love this show but I cant believe they killed Charlie!  I knew, to my bones, when he and Roberta hit the sheets that one or both of them was going to suffer, but I was thinking one of them would somehow get separated from the group (ala TWD's Andrea) NOT that they would kill off my favorite character!  It will be interesting to see who takes the lead now.  I assume it will be Roberta since she is the only other military trained person with the group right now, but she may be too devastated to be of much use for a little while.

Still love 10K and will be really pissed if he doesn't make it.  I definitely expected more of a conversation between the core group over Murphy's little revelations but everyone seems to be like "So Murphy is the zombie king now?  Meh.  What are we going to do about transportation?"  LOL  I really don't want this show to be cancelled.  The sheer stupidity of the cult leader/followers and the unbelievable luck of our heroes just makes this must see TV for me.

I thought that Murphy did the whole Z Jesus thing as a diversion, having finally come somewhat to his senses, and realized that his group was about to die at the hands of the crazy preacher. It seemed like he was still sussing out how much power he has over the zombies. I thought the silly fingers in the mouth thing was actually quite well done, with just the right amount of humor and tension.

I was shocked that Charlie got killed. But I am now intrigued about who will step up to lead, how Murphy is changing (he also seemed to be more human at the end too), what is going on with the girl with the spiked bat and her PTSD or whatever that is she's going through. I think the show is getting better each episode.

I definitely agree that Murphy's Zombie Messiah bit was him thinking on his feet.  He definitely now knows the zombies wont attack him so I imagine he is going to have some "fun" figuring out just how much power he has over them.  Like...they wont bite him but will they stop attacking someone else on his command?  Things are getting really interesting. And I am dying to know what is up with Abby's PTSD stuff.  The flashes are way too fast for me to tell what is happening in them.

4 episodes

That's more than I thought, and I'm glad.  This show is the comedy relief I need after all the misery The Walking Dead puts me through.  At least it was until they just had to kill off Garnett.  I was hoping they'd all make it even though that wouldn't make sense on a zombie show.  Plus I wanted to see a continued romance between Warren and Garnett.

Who will lead now?  I'd say Warren.  She's the only surviving soldier.

Killing Garnett seems pretty short-sighted now that they have been renewed for Season 2.

While not letting everyone go around the compound armed to the teeth made a little sense, and they worked to justify it, having a single armory right by the gate was pretty dumb.

Lots of problems with the basic mechanics of the compound takeover. The cult guys were insanely good at wrangling zombies, especially since they were way outnumbered. One thing that TWD got right was how difficult and dangerous it would be to try and do that with even two humans and one zombie.  The cage zombies were pretty placid, Murphy stepped in and out of the cage and the Z's just stood there, no attempt to rush past him. Was that supposed to be his influence?

Zombies (and eyewitnesses) read Murphy as an unappetizing zombie-human hybrid.

Sure, I get that, but they had no trouble charging past him to get to live humans in the building. Once they are in the cage with him, they just stand there, not looking very aggressive at all, and don't try to get past him even though the door is wide open and many juicy humans are nearby.

Well, it has been shown in the past to have a homing instinct.

But mainly, I just wanted to say that I love your Far Side reference and can no longer think of calling it anything else.

Not Charlie! Aw, that sucks. But I do really like that no one is safe. Anyone can die. Even if they are a fan favorite. That's pretty cool.

Murphy just went from my least favorite to my most favorite. Three cheers for Zombie Jesus!

The cult guys were dumb. I think it would have worked better if their leader was more charismatic. I couldn't figure why anyone was following him.

I also watch The Walking Dead, so when Charlie Garnett died—Hammond (Harold Perrineau), too—I yelled, "They killed their Rick?!"

Totally. It just opens up the writers to try something different. I'm curious who in the group will step up and take charge. Doc is too old. 10K is too young. Murphy is too selfish. Cassandra, Mack, and Addy aren't really leaders. With her military training, Roberta is the obvious choice, but at the same time, I don't think I've ever seen a post-apocalypse movie/show/book/etc. that lets the black woman be the leader.
