S02.E01: One Year Later

Great to have this back.

Liked how Cassian talked to the mole tech.

If the Rebellion had been full of the idiots Cassian stumbled on they wouldn't have won the war!

Man, Mothma's husband continues to be the worst.

Syril getting cucked by Krennic would be awesome.

Aaahhhh, we're so back!

It's fascinating to see Cassian at this point in his journey, and I'm already sad that we're only give to have three episodes of this version of him. He was so steady and reassuring to the Imperial defector, so warm. I liked that he told her it was okay to feel the loss of everything she was giving up, and I loved this line: “You’re coming home to yourself. You’ve become more than your fear. Let that protect you.” But at the same time, he's not “Cassian Andor: Super-Rebel.” I liked seeing that he was nervous and overwhelmed as he tried to get the lay of the land on the test ship, muttering, “You’ve got this” to himself over and over. I liked that, throughout the rocky escape, he demonstrated quick thinking and incredible skill while basically shitting himself the whole time.

I liked that Bix is still haunted by her ISB torture, but that she also has normal moments where she can tease Wilmon and work on repairing stuff. So intrigued by Luthen's presence at the wedding (with Kleya!), and my heart broke for Mon with Leida. The Krennic scenes were really good--those guys from the Ministry of Enlightenment were especially creepy. “Some of what you’re thinking about Ghormans at this very moment exists because we put it there,” so gross!

We're so back! It'll be satisfying to be able to watch the full BBY-year arc each week, but I'm sad that Andor will be completely over in a month.

At long last, one of the best Star Wars installments of all time has finally come back for one final ride!  Sad that we are only getting one more season, but at least they will hopefully have a good ending planned out.  And doing three episodes each night will hopefully not make it feel like they're just dragging it out.

So, it's one year later and Cassian seems to already be adapting to the spy life.  The way he handled that Imperial mole tech was really well done and while I'm sure part of it was to make sure the plan succeeded, I think he really did want to help her out the best way possible and appreciated how she was stepping up for the cause.  Less impressive was his attempt at T.I.E. flying, heh.  I guess handling one of those things is easier said than done!  But, he's still breathing, so I guess that is a win more or less!

Granted, he's now fallen into another shaky situation: some kind of rebel group that is.... disorganized to put it mildly.  I do love seeing the early days of this rebellion and how there are so many different factions and not everyone is on the same page.  Makes me look forward to seeing what ends up finally being the factor to make the Rebel Alliance happen.

Poor Mon Mothma continues to hold her head up high while dealing every kind of crazy known to mankind.  She deserves a drink or more after all of this is said and done.  Won't be surprised if something really wild goes down at this wedding.  Especially with the presence of Luthen in his undercover, flamboyant salesman mode!

Not surprised Bix is suffering from some PTSD after everything she's been through, but I'm glad she can find the time for a little normalcy like teasing Wilman over a potential crush.  But it looks like the Imperial might be crashing the party very soon.

Finally, on the Imperial front, Dedra continues to shine despite the events of last season's finale, and is now part of a secret Imperial plot cooked up by none other than Krennic!  Never will complain over Ben Mendelsohn showing up deliver sinister dialogue like only he can!  Sounds like there plan is to cause some kind of instability on a planet in order to mine their precious mineral, which... yeah, I kind of feel like I've heard variations of this in other places.  Way to hit close to home there, show.   A galaxy far, far away, but similar to old Earth in so many ways.

Onto the next one!

That was painful!  When this episode ended, i was like, "That didn't even make sense!!!"

I really wanted to dive in and watch more, but I'm pacing myself.  I want to really enjoy this last season.

The group Cassian ran into was led by Maya Pei who was mentioned a few times in season 1 as one of many Rebel cells. Dedra knows about her. Specifically Saw Gerrera doesn't like her because she's a "Neo-Republican". One of them says  “We got ambushed! We lost six ships, 40 fighters!” Maya was presumed killed. I think this was to show how truly disorganized the Rebellion was at this point. You have different cells who aren't communicating with each other or trust one another. They also fatally lacked discipline and a clear chain of command.  Without their leader they were like children.

Thank you for telling me about Maya Pei.  I completely missed that!  Any idea when she was mentioned in Season 1.  Just curious, because I might rewatch that scene.

I think the part the frustrated me the most was not being able to really "see" what was happening.  It was dark, everyone was dirty, I couldn't really tell what anyone looked like.

The chaos was trying :-)  But I'm sure when that part plays out, it will help.  It's not like that part had any closure at the end of this episode.

That was uncomfortably true to life, with the way that so many resistance/rebellion/political movements never manage to go anywhere because they become circular firing squads, with everyone too concerned with hierarchy, purity, or messaging and holding firm to their own stands for them to actually pull together against the real enemy. It was like seeing BlueSky political discourse in real life, but with blasters.

I loved Cassian's struggle with the TIE. One thing that's irked me about the Star Wars universe in general is how anyone can jump into any spaceship and fly it like a pro. A car is pretty much a car, but when I get into a rental car, the first few minutes are seldom pretty. Heck, I've had my current car for a year and a half, and I'm still adjusting since it's so different from my last car (auto vs. manual, very different size and shape, lots of different features. I had to pull over once when it started raining because I couldn't find the windshield wiper controls that were on the opposite side from my old car). A TIE looks like it would fly very differently from a freighter or an X-wing or any other ship, and a new model would be even worse. I can imagine that finding all the controls and getting used to how it flies would be a challenge. I'd have rolled my eyes if he'd just jumped in and flew it perfectly.

The costume designer should win all the awards for Mon Mothma's wardrobe. They could do a line of those dresses in stores.

I second the recommendation for the 15-minute recap.  In fact, I'd hoped it went just a little bit deeper.  I don't think I'd want an hour, but 20 or 30 minutes would probably have been okay.  The first season covered a lot, introduced a lot of characters and plots, and the recap reminded me of all the stuff that happened, or at least the stuff that Disney thinks is important.

Anyway, this episode was exactly what the title implied: One Year Later.  We get caught up on nearly everyone, where they are now, and what's coming up next.  I like that they didn't fill it with half-references to events from the first season, but instead assumed we were either bingeing or had watched a recap of some kind.  It's been over two years(!)

Was Mon Mothma concerned about Luthen being there?  She looked out and said something like "What is he doing here?" surprised and a little angry, and I think she was talking about Luthen.  But what would be the problem?  She and Perrin know and deal with a lot of people, and I'm sure the groom's parents as well, so it doesn't strain credibility that a high-end art dealer (or whatever his cover is) could be invited to the wedding.

I wasn't sure if that was Vel at first.  Did she dye her hair?  I thought she was blonde before.  Well, it's been a year.  Boy, she and Kleya don't get along, do they?  I guess you can be on the same "side" and still come from totally different worlds and bring that baggage into the relationship.

When it ended, I actually said out loud "Is that it?!" because it seemed like we'd just caught everything up and just got started, but I guess that was the point.  I looked and it had been 40+ minutes, so that's about right.  Someone said to regard each three-episode arc as a 2-hour feature covering one year, and this episode had to catch us up and lay the groundwork for the next two, and the season to come.

Edit: The one thing I didn't like was Leida's crying fit and Mon having to go comfort her.  In general, I don't have a problem with us seeing Mon's home and family life, and Leida's marriage to <the shady guy's son, I don't remember his name> is part of that, but it seemed to come out of nowhere.  They've been courting for a year, this is the wedding day, and he won't hold her hand and she's in tears about it?  This isn't grade school, kids.  Grow the hell up.  If the idea was to show us that things aren't all rosy between them, then there were better options.

I thought the point was to remind us that even when you are trying to finance and influence a rebellion, you still have to deal with petty stuff like an upset child.

My daughter swears that there was a shot of a portrait of Maarva in the place where Bix is living.

This was broadcast on regular TV last night.  But just episode 2.1.

Yes, she was surprised and concerned that Luthen was there. I assumed because it added potential for conflict and exposure of her rebel activities. I'm sure she would have preferred to go through the weekend as just the mother of the bride. But him being there reminds her every second of her dual-life and causes a risk of exposure

Your daughter is correct. It looks hand-drawn, actually, and is a really sweet homage to the lasting impact Maarva has on this group. I'm also fairly certain that Cassian lives there too, when he's not on a mission for the rebellion.

I caught the Maarva picture too but thought it looked like a photo/screen capture of the hologram?

Whatever format it was, I really wanted to know how they got from the funeral to one year later. But I respect how this is a show that forces you to pay attention. You can't watch it with one eye on your phone or you'll never keep up. (Even paying attention I couldn't keep up half the time without the closed captions.)

Fair enough, and I figured it was something like that.  It just seemed like her freaking out because he won't hold her hand, and him for some reason not wanting to hold her hand, at their wedding of all things, seemed kinda dumb.  But I suppose on one's wedding day, emotions and anxiety are both running pretty high.  It's not unusual for a freak-out or two to happen, I guess.

I think it was mostly that the last thing she wanted to deal with during the stress of her daughter's wedding was both sides of her double life colliding. It would be like your difficult coworker showing up as a guest's date at your daughter's wedding -- one more thing than you want to have to deal with. There might also have been the concern that he was up to something. Was he there as an art dealer or as a rebel? There would be a lot of highly placed people there, so it would be prime for recruitment or assassination.

I kept calling them the gang that can't shoot straight.

It reminded me of a book I read on Castro and the Cuban Revolution. I knew they won, but early in the book I couldn't figure out how. I started thinking of them as the revolutionaries that couldn't shoot straight. I had the same thought about the rebels that Andor crashes into.

Poor B2, he's so attached to Andor, especially after Maarva's death. Glad he's with Brasso, Bix and Wilman.

He reminded me of a little kid counting down the days until a family member comes home.

This recap is about an hour long, but it was really good.  There are so many on youtube, so I'm sure you'll find one.

The first scene with Mon Mothma is almost one continuous tracking shot of her walking around and greeting all the guests. I think there was only one cut right before she talks to Luthen. And the whole thing looked awesome. Totally the kind of thing where you need a real location and couldn't get away with doing on a room with walls covered in HD screens.

I also really liked Mon's line about how Luthen was terrible at keeping secrets. Actually her whole attitude about him being there and it being one more thing she didn't need on her plate was really good.

I am also really curious to see what the problem Mon's banker (I think) friend wanted to talk to her about was.
