S50.E17: Jon Hamm / Lizzo

Recommended Posts

Cold Open: Jesus sketch. I figured Trump was gonna show up like in the Alexander Hamilton sketch...and I was right. I liked the call out to Emil and Miss Eggy, and Mikey Day breaking the freeze to just glare at Trump from the background. I was gonna just say look at Sarah in the background...and JAJ points it out. And Kenan just ups and leaves. Mood, really.

Monologue: It's surprising that the last time Jon Hamm hosted was in 2010. And made 14 cameos since then, including the 50th. Okay, loved how they showed all 14 onscreen at once. And hey, Kieran Culkin's out of the audience this week!

CTCBNC: A news channel for people living paycheck to paycheck. Seriously, great premise. The cereal bag is a Big Mood. As was Dismukes flipping a Funko Pop on ebay and then buying lots of expensive ones. The Freddy Funko Batman Beyond goes for about $185 right now.

Please Don't Destroy: This was fun. I can't get enough of Jon Hamm wanting pizza. "WHO THE FUCK ORDERS HAWAIIAN?!" had me rolling.

Guess! The Correct! Answer!: Jon Hamm just sells this so well. "Something that's racist." "Mmmmm...me..."

The White POTUS: This was great, but I feel that I would've gotten more out of it if I actually watched White Lotus. But waaaay more welcome than cold opens like the one we just saw. Jon Hamm as RFK Jr as Walton Goggins was NOT on the bingo card, but way better than Alec Baldwin's take. What does it say that my favorite cameos were Alex Moffat coming back as Eric Trump and Beck back as Putin?

WU: Trump talking about tariffs like Bubba Gump talking about shrimp makes way too much sense. And that RFK Jr's skincare routine involves laying under 7/11 hotdog lamps.

Loved seeing a new Squirm character to mess with Colin, this time his financial advisor (and implying his previous one was Jeffrey Epstein). And THAT'S why the backdrop was so weird! Sarah had to bust through it!

New Parents: "Whose baby is that?" Aaaaand there's the hook. This was a fun one, even if the subject material was ROUGH. I wouldn't be surprised if Bowen wrote this one, though, especially since Bowen's character claimed to speak the following languages: English, French, AP French, Na'vi, Simlish, Black-ish, Grown-ish, and singing.

I wasn't the only one who noticed that the establishing shot was Jerry Seinfeld's apartment from Seinfeld, right?

Herpastopper: I knew there'd eventually be a commercial parodying stuff you only see in pharma commercials in slow motion. Hiking with interracial friends? Rock climbing? Being the only person having fun? You may have herpes. Breaking into a dance number at the office? Diabetes.

New Employees: The reveal of Greg's dad being murdered on Jackass was great, and then everything else just didn't live up to that. Except Susan forgetting who she was.

Jack Black's episode was a tough act to follow, but I really liked this one. The show returns May 3rd with Quinta Brunson! Don't sleep on Abbott Elementary, it's great! Season finale is Wednesday.

YAY, CONSISTENTLY FUNNY SHOW.

And for me, the first one in a long time - maybe since Ryan Gosling or Pedro Pascal. Those two make everything funny. John Hamm does the same and this time the writing was up there with him.

Only thing I didn't like was the cold open -- they do trump too benignly for me.

And the herpes ad wasn't as funny as everything else for me. Nor was White Potus, but I don't watch White Lotus. I did love Ivanka walking out of the spiritual seminar.

Really close to a "10"!

Once again WU was my favorite part of the show, though Hamm was great in everything. I loved Emil Wakim and I always love Bowen as the Chinese trade guy.

The Check to Check channel was great, and I finally liked a Please Don't Destroy video. I did that Icebreaker thing at my current job, which I hate. And mine was that I have a twin!

I don't watch The White Lotus, so I think things might have gone over my head with The White Potus. Is the show that creepy?

I feel like I watch way too much TV, because in the herpes medicine ad, I knew that the child holding up a drawing was going to be Depression.

Uh...they actually held back a bit, especially at the end with Donnie Jr as the older son.

Oh yeah, I agree with Hamm in the monologue. Mad Men is indeed better than Succession. I said it. You can root for a few characters on Mad Men.

.

What was the correct answer on that one? I missed it.

The answer was micro-aggressions. So the clue given was racist which sent Hamm running off racist things which all were him and his family.  Thought it was funny.

The White Lotus spoof was perfect.  The dad there was freaking out because he committed financial fraud and was going to lose all the family's money and was severely depressed and knew they couldn't live without being rich so he was going to go all family annihilator on them. So using Trump sinking the economy while his family was clueless was a perfect jumping off point for writing the spoof. The rest just flowed naturally.

The whole show was funny except Sherman in WU - I try to watch her harrass Colin but it just isn't funny to me and I wind up ff'ding it each time. I thought Emil and Bowen were great though.

They do write Trump too benignly but the real one sets me spinning so badly I can't watch him at all. I need the comedians to get me through anything about him at all.  If I'm paralyzed I can't pull it together to oppose them. You know?

Anyway, great show. It was the first solid hit I've seen SNL do all season.

This one got the biggest laughs from me! Especially the student loans part, because, yeah - the government is probably never never getting all that money back... not in this economy! The ticker along the bottom was great too. One was 'Ketchup Packets'.

As far as I'm concerned, they can stop the Trump sketches where the cast freezes in the background and he comments on it. And although I appreciate JAJ's impression of Trump, I think I want it more exaggerated with the narcissism, psychopathy, and dementia emphasized more. I did like a couple of the jokes. He's the messiah because of "the mess-I-a made out of the economy." and "I'm in great shape. One of the best shapes. LUMP!"

The monologue was ok. I can't believe it's been 10 years since he hosted, but I guess that because he cameoed so many times.

The Check-to-Check Business News was fantastic. We really need that! Loved that the most popular toilet paper is Chipotle napkins. So many great lines.

please don't destroy was good. I liked how Jon Hamm was exactly like a little kid pouting, and everyone was irritated with him, but then it turned around with the Hawaiian pizzas.

Guess! The Correct! Answer! was ok. JH was very good. I didn't like Michael as the host. I think I just don't like his delivery style.

The White POTUS. Excellent! I watched that show, and I wondered how the sketch would go over with people who hadn't seen it. Chloe did Parker Posey accent, and that was great. When Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi left Marco Rubio at the table to stand aside and gossip, that was like the three girlfriends in TWL where one pair would gossip about the other, who would see them, and then later a different pair would gossip, and so on.

I can't tell you how excited I was to see Alex Moffat back as Eric. All his bits were hilarious. (On the show the one brother was always making shakes, which became very significant in the finale.)

I don't think they should have had Scarlett in the sketch. The audience was roaring when they saw her, so the impact of her walking out of the monastery was blunted. Heidi should have played Ivanka, though I don't know how it would be for Scarlett to play Kristi Noem.

Lizzo as Belinda threw me for a second because at first I thought it was the actual actress who played her on TWL.

I liked WU, except for Sarah and Emil. I didn't think his bit was all that funny. LOVE the line about Trump talking about tariffs was like listening to Bubba Gump talk about shrimp. So true. (I'd rather listen to Bubba.) Loved Chen Biao.

The evasive gay couple was pretty funny. The sketch did not need Lizzo.

The slo-mo commercial was good.

I didn't care for the new employees sketch.

Lizzo was ok. Loved her dress blowing behind her in the second performance.

Thanks to a more dedicated fan than me, it was pointed out that it was NOT Jerry’s apartment, it was just a shot that looked like it.

Hunt’s Ketchup was there, too. They were both down.

Seriously, the ticker was great, it was full of lots of extra jokes.

I actually enjoyed the whole show.  It was fun.

There's something about these comments that puzzles me, but I can't figure out what it is. Lizzo is fine, I mean, I like some of her songs. I'm tired of all the discussion about her weight. And I found this week's show to be OK. Not great, not terrible. Jon Hamm is bland, he basically is a basic guy who tries hard. So I don't know why people seem to love it.

The cold open, I'm done. Trump is awful and nothing about him is funny.

White Lotus made no sense because at least in WS, the dad *realized* what he had done. Trump has no clue and doesn't regret it.

Check-to-check was a *great* concept but they should have tied it to Magas, and translating what those "smarty pants news people" talk about in economics into things Magas get. The way they presented it was too vague, after the initial win of trying to talk about things that mean something to noneconomists.

Same with the ice breaker sketch. The murder anecdote should have been more brutal, and then every follow up question should have been directed at Hamm's character for more info. Again, it was too meandering.

The gay guys with the baby. same. They had something wit gay guys who suddenly showed up with a baby, and gay guys that took offense to normal questions, but it sent nowhere.

Please Don't Destroy ... that was a lot of set up for a weak joke about Hawaiian pizza.

It was all fine.

Well, people are entitled to their opinions about the show.

Also, I haven't seen any comments about Lizzo's weight.  I just don't think she's that good of a singer.

I noticed something about the goodbye segment at the end.  They're all completely ignoring the audience, which seems odd.  You could see that especially as they pulled the camera back to include the crowd.  Everyone just wants to be seen getting their hugs in, and not get caught standing alone.

I'm not a fan of the goodbyes. It all seems so performative.

I agree it was spot-on. There was some brief reaction to the actual show when the dad was wearing a “Duke” T-shirt while doing (or imagining) awful things. Here the T-shirt said “King”.

Was that the actual actor who played Greg/Gary in the show? If not, it was a great lookalike!

I thought it was a weak sketch.  The Black Lotus parody they did a couple of years ago was better, and didn't feel as forced as this one did.

Yes, exactly.  Not only is it boring, it all feels fake.  I'd like to see them drop it, but that's not likely after 50 years.

Well, on the one hand, it's pretty common to have a curtain call after a live show.  Although those are directed more towards the audience, not each other.

On the other hand, it's always felt a little "we're the cool kids and you're not" to me.

Yes, exactly.  Curtain calls are almost exclusively directed toward the audience, or an interaction with the audience so they can thank each other.  Instead, it comes across as more self congratulatory, and trying to show that they're in the loop.

I was hoping that his accountant would take a different tack but it was the same old thing. I still think the problem is that the joke is that they go so dark while sunny Colin sits there in contrast to prove it's not really true. It would be funnier to me if Colin tried to portray even a little bit of the darkness.

I know there was a similar sketch before where Bowen and his partner informed their friends that they were trying for a baby, but I couldn't remember who the partner was or which episode it was. I enjoyed the absurdity of this one as well although I would have appreciated a nod to the previous sketch for continuity.

I liked the fact that they didn't immediately get stuck on John Hamm's story and managed to keep other characters going. However I would probably have wanted to structure it so that most of the characters started out by obviously avoiding mentioning John Hamm until one of them couldn't take it any more and went all in.

consistently funny all the way through, John Hamm was excellent. I really liked the medicine commercial, when I saw people doing a musical number in the office I automatically knew it was a diabetes commercial based on Jardiance😭

The capitalism commentary during Weekend Update was great, I also like Sarah Sherman as Colin's accountant. The "runny eggs" and "line by line" part was great.

Observations: Why is the guest host usually not on during Weekend Update, and how come the NBC logo screen bug is never up during Update?

Anyone notice who and what was on the t-shirt Sarah Sherman was wearing at the end (I have a feeling I'm going to regret asking)?  She made a point out of showing it off to the camera.  It had a picture of a woman and something written at the bottom.

The word at the bottom was “why?” but I didn’t recognize the woman in the picture. I don’t think she’s a cabinet member or congress person, but I could be wrong.

Sarah Sherman seemed determined that we take notice of her the woman on her t-shirt during this week’s SNLgoodnights, but who was it, and—to borrow a phrase from the shirt itself—why?

That was the question quite a few eagle-eyed viewers were asking at the conclusion of last night’s Jon Hamm-hosted Saturday Night Live.

LateNighter can reveal that the person on Sherman’s shirt was Karen Siff-Exkorn, and no, despite internet speculation, she’s not a SNL staffer or a friend of Sherman’s.

Siff-Exhorn was the winning bidder of an auction item at last month’s “Night of Too Many Stars,” the annual live comedy event hosted by Jon Stewartand founded by former SNL writer Robert Smigel, benefiting autism programs nationwide. This year’s group of too many stars included Paul Rudd, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, and Nikki Glaser,

Thank you, Jon Hamm, @lizzo, and Kieran Culkin! Goodnight! pic.twitter.com/pKQuzEhJPO

— Saturday Night Live – SNL (@nbcsnl) April 13, 2025

Sherman was among several current SNL stars to perform at this year’s event, including James Austin Johnson, Marcello Hernandez, and Please Don’t Destroy. It was apparently Sherman’s idea to auction off the opportunity to be pictured on her shirt during a future SNL goodnights.

As for the “Why?” text underneath her photo on the shirt, that was Siff-Exhorn’s choice from a number of options Sherman offered up to the crowd.

Siff-Exhorn was not only an attendee of this year’s “Night of Too Many Stars,” she also sits on the board of NEXT for Autism, the organization that puts on the event. A longtime advocate for autism eduction, Siff-Exhorn wrote the book The Autism Sourcebook after her own son was diagnosed with childhood autism and she found it difficult to pull together comprehensive information about the disorder.

Though it won’t net you a spot on Sarah Sherman’s goodnights shirt, you can still donate to NEXT for Austismand support their important work.

In addition to the Miss Eggy mention in the cold open, Bowen tried to call back to the WU audience swearing by ending Chen Biao with, “With these tariffs ain’t what?! …”

Well, since nobody answered my question that I could have just googled myself, I just googled it myself and found this article:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2025-04-12/snl-tariffs-donald-trump-white-potus-jon-hamm-recap

In part it says

Quote

The sketch’s best surprise? A cameo from actual “White Lotus” cast member Jon Gries, who played Greg Hunt on the show. Did the sketch have much of a point? Not really, but it did a nice job capturing the visual vocabulary and tone of the show.

So yes, that was the real actor.
