GOP: "The states should be able to decide how to  run things!"

Also the GOP: "No, not like that!"

If they actually gave any sort of a damn about "protecting life", I would suggest they should go watch that "Daily Show" clip where Jon rattles off a tragically incomplete list of mass shootings that have happened in the past 25 years and see if they could actually do something about that issue.

But nah. Better to make women's lives a living hell instead because they have the nerve to think they should be able to decide what to do with their own bodies.

Yeah. :(

I was really happy when we won that election in 2023.  We'd already gone through the special election to vote on Issue 1, where they tried to raise the percentage to 60% to be reached, for an amendment to pass. This, after they'd decided we shouldn't have special elections during the Summer - until we had petitions circulating everywhere, to get abortion on the ballot. We won both of those, and I really thought that things were changing for the better.

But the GOP has a grip on this State, and they didn't really believe in state's rights, and letting the people decide.

@Anela I'm so sorry.

I remember everything about what you wrote here. You all did everything right and they kept throwing up roadblocks at every round, but Ohioans persisted and won! How is it now possible for these bastards to do this when your votes AMENDED THE FUCKING CONSTITUTION OF OHIO?!?

Here's the Klapper interview with former POTUS Clinton and coauthor Patterson:
https://youtu.be/KbxL5s1RERQ
I especially like what Clinton said near the end:

  • “…there's an easy way to fix it.…if you elect a Democrat president,
they [Republicans] will have an epiphany.
And all of a sudden they'll rediscover the separation of powers and…constitutional rights and all this stuff.”

But will the monster destroy Trump? He might be their leader but we have seen him back down.  Once they made their hatred of the Covid vaccine known he stopped talking about how he got it made. He kept contradicting himself about the Florida abortion ban that was on the ballot because he would say one thing then his base would say whoa wait a minute.  He might not need their votes anymore but he has this pathological need for people to like him (or at least pretend to) and at this point it's only MAGA that can even tolerate him.

The GOP or as @Lantern7 calls them Gross Old Party, always overestimates how many Republicans support their out of touch agenda.   Most people and that includes Reps want better gun control, reproductive decisions to be made by the patient and their doctor and health care to be affordable and accessible. So when things related to those issues are on a ballot they usually pass.  And then the red states legislatures say nope and ignore what the voters voted for.  And instead of being voted out in the next election Reps vote for them again.  I guess they think a lying Rep is better than any Dem.

As we have said before the cruelty is the point.  The most fervent anti choicers are the religious ones who think any woman who wants an abortion is a promiscuous woman and should be punished.   You never ever hear any of them say a word about the men who are responsible for these women getting pregnant.  Unless of course the men try to prevent the women from terminating their pregnancies. Years ago in PA (I think) there was a case of woman wanting an abortion and the father (I don't think they were married) went to court to stop her.  He lost and she was able to have an abortion.  He would probably win today.

Your state also voted to legalize weed and then they tried to prevent that too.

This guy is really showing his mental issues now. Putting up a framed picture of himself among the First Lady portraits? It also shows he's not running the country. If he were, he'd be too busy in the oval office to be obsessed with First Lady portraits.

He doesn't want to actually do the work of being President. He just wants to sign executive orders, have parades, threaten our allies, eat Big Macs and tweet in all caps.

I agree completely,  bluegirl147.

Their abortion stance not targeting men is similar to deporting immigrants..... they never go after the employers.

It all makes me sick...their actions and the magas who believe/buy the hype, never stopping to think about the weak, little creep(s) behind the curtain.

Thank goidness for Jon Stewart, Kimmel, Klepper, Colbert and Heather Cox Richardson helping me thru these unbelievable times.

I was wondering about the rose garden at the White House so I looked at the latest news on the subject. As usual, it's more ugliness.

https://apnews.com/article/trump-white-house-rose-garden-lawn-flagpoles-22fd65b458003b817047cd9f3678978e

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House broke ground Monday on construction projects ordered by President Donald Trump to pave over the grass in the Rose Garden and install flagpoles on the north and south lawns.

The projects are part of a series of personal touches that Trump, a real estate developer turned politician, has added or is adding to the Executive Mansion and its grounds since he opened his second term in January. The projects also include new artwork of himself on walls and gold-toned flourishes in the Oval Office. He also wants to add a ballroom.

Personal touches?  Please. He is uglifying everything beautiful previous presidents have left. His wife (he still has one right?  We rarely see her) is no better.  On January 6th when her aid texted her asking her if she wanted to make a statement condemning the violence she said no. She was too busy having a rug measured or something.  Destroying the rose garden is especially galling.  What is that song?  Pave paradise put up a parking lot?

Anyone but me remember those old Clairol commercials? Does she or doesn't she?  Only her hairdresser knows for sure.  Why does this make me think of Trump?

Trump is playing the same game with potential war with Iran as he is doing with tariffs.  That coy  "maybe I will, maybe I won't" nonsense.

Does he plan to spend his entire presidency being a one trick pony in the way he tries to bully the world?  Sadly I don't think even his hairdresser knows for sure.

ICE appears to be attempting to use Dodger Stadium in LA as a staging area. Although they were denied entry by employees at the Stadium, from what I'm seeing on Blue Sky, they are still there and within the past hour or so, LAPD has shown up. Protesters and press members have assembled near Stadium Gate E.

It should also be noted that the Dodgers have a game scheduled against the Padres tonight.

As a baseball fan, who also loves reading about the history of the game, I know that this occupation by ICE is particularly disgusting because of the history of the building of Dodger Stadium. Chavez Ravine, where the Stadium is located, was once a thriving neighborhood of Mexican Americans before the City of Los Angeles took the land via eminent domain and other political devices 60+ years ago after the team left Brooklyn for LA.

ICE agents requested permission to use Dodger Stadium parking lots and were denied, team says

Update on the situation at Dodger Stadium: It seems that LAPD ultimately escorted the ICE agents out of Dodger Stadium. Perhaps Feds at Dodger Stadium was a step too far even for the LAPD?

Anyway, this was the Twitter/X response from the Dept. of Homeland Security.

It couldn't have been "very briefly" as a good number of protesters were able to make their way to the Stadium, along with members of the press, including the intrepid Jacob Soboroff, who seems to be everywhere in LA since the ICE raids began. There's a video clip from Dodger Stadium on his BlueSky account here: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobsoboroff.bsky.social/post/3lry5li7eg22w

Also, I've never been to L.A.--two one-hour layovers at LAX don't count!--but from what I've been reading, you don’t just accidentally make a wrong turn and land at Dodger Stadium. What was their plan?

Trump’s EPA intends to reverse a ban on asbestos a carcinogen that causes disease and death from exposure

The Justice Department is set to cut two thirds of inspectors monitoring gun sales as part of the Trump Administration’s effort to defang the Bureau of Alcohol Tabacco Firearms and Explosives

Very busy this horrid administration

I have little doubt he wants a White House ballroom so he can rent it out for weddings

I agree - a security agency must be identifiable. How are these folks even being vetted!? The more I see these supposed ICE agents the less I trust them - they look like private citizen militia who volunteered to be ICE agents, not officers. No wonder the DHS want extra funding 🙄

Literally creating an uneasy environment for everyone involved and for why? It's going to be chaotic enough as it is if they're like this for next year's World Cup. They're already making it difficult for people to come here and discouraging the ones who can.

What if they 'accidentally' detain a player from an international team or a tourist who is attending one of the matches?

I've been saying, I think Springsteen should take him on tour with him. Young men have been the largest group moving to the right of the spectrum. Laugh if you want but I blame the adulation that young men display towards the Tates and Rogans of the world is because there are few, if any male rock stars anymore.

He's just doing all this to crap all over everything and leave his mark on it. He's only going to be there for less than 4 years now so it's not because he really wants or needs any of it. He's leaving a mess for future presidents to clean up, just like he's doing with the country in general. And that's the point.

It's true. MAGA existed before Trump. It just wasn't known by that name.  He became their leader because he wasn't afraid to say out loud what most of them had been saying for years. Other politicians had tried to win their votes and some succeeded but they didn't inspire the loyalty that Trump did.

Last night on Colbert, an interview with Paul Simon demonstrated the antithesis of Trump's ego in an anecdote about "The Songs of Silence," beginning here at the 10:09 mark of this 18:36 minute segment:
https://youtu.be/w__tJTosiwk?si=o_xlM75EET1cSqDe&t=609

Quote

[PAUL SIMON]…many years ago I took a trip down the Amazon and we stopped at a little village…It didn't have any roads…12 or 14 huts…in one of the one of the little houses this girl was playing a nylon string guitar and looking at a book and I said to her through the translator “I know a South American song…from Peru. And I played a little bit of El Condor Pasa [If I Could], you know [PAUL SIMON VOCALIZES A FEW BARS].”
And she said "Oh I know that song.…I know an American song."
I said "Okay, want to play it?"
And she played The Sounds of Silence.

[COLBERT] But did she know…?

[PAUL SIMON] We're in the Amazon…

[COLBERT] So did she know that you had written it?

[PAUL SIMON] no of course not Of course not I didn't tell her. I [didn't] wanted to say "Yeah, that's one of mine."??

It's not like Paul Simon is ego-less.
He's just so much more worthwhile as a human being than djt.
And Paul Simon sets an example worth emulating.

Cmon, the guy sells his country out more times before 10 a.m. before most other world leaders do all day. And he’d probably only get ten silver coins, then brag he got fifty.

I watched this as it aired last night. Colbert is not my regular late night go-to but I saw that Paul Simon was the featured guest so I tuned in to watch and then stuck around to hear Maxwell Frost. Even without his guitar, Paul Simon is a just marvelous storyteller. The segment you shared was a delight to watch, along with the other story he told about why the characters in "You Can Call Me Al" were named Al and Betty. Wonderful interview.

This is what the incompetent unfit guy in the White House put out on his social media platform today

“Zero boarder crossings for the month for TRUMP versus 60,000 for Sleepy Crooked Joe Biden a man who lost the 2020 Presidential Election by a ‘Landslide!’ Biden was grossly incompetent and the 2020 Presidential Election was a total FRAUD! The evidence is MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING. A Special Prosecutor must be appointed this cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America. Let the work begin! What this crooked man and his CORRUPT CRONIES have done to our country in four years is grossly indescribable! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

This is frightening considering how much power he has and not even courts to stop him
