New York Governor Kathy Hochul hasn't placed all that high on my personal list of favorite Democratic Governors, but she's impressed me this afternoon by standing up.

Also, if a high visibility detention of NYC Comptroller Brad Lander by "ICE" agents is what pushed Gov. Hochul to do this, then his temporary detention had value.

I sincerely hope the good people of New York will be smart enough not to fall for Cuomo's schtick again. I think they are. I wish we had ranked choice voting here.

I'm optimistically cautious on that - you'd be surprised how there's a lot of "better the devil you know" attitudes/tendencies when it comes to change here.

People could share their top 3 priorities of what they want in the city (affordable housing, public safety, blah blah blah) but they can't specify which candidate would best address those priorities. Unfortunately, Cuomo has been a forerunner for months. Zohran Mamdani has been catching up in the polls in recent weeks but not enough. The rest of the candidates are still greatly lagging behind both though I foresee Landers getting a spike in ratings after what happened today. One of Mamdani's door knockers came to my home asking me not to rank Cuomo haha.

I cannot tell you how many ads I've received in recent weeks from Cuomo bashing Mamdani for being a "radical socialist." Others may think his ideas aren't "practical" enough so they might be willing to hold their nose and vote for Cuomo again just because of his experience. There's so much more at stake now with this new administration and their declaration on blue cities. Factoring that, along with those who just aren't engaged in this race and/or probably won't vote at all makes me disheartened. I plan on voting on Election Day anyway though.

I think the city's general consensus is that "The Man with No Plan" Adams needs to go go go because of all the scandals he's had in the last few years (he knows he'd lose if he ran as a Democrat and he's under Trump's thumb). But I also remember that every state in the country, barring a few, has shifted conservatively even in the blue states and will stick with "safe" choices rather than taking chances on fresh candidates. The old guard will win out again imo. Let's hope I'm wrong!

Someone has already created a fake commercial for Trump Mobile.  I saw it posted elsewhere -- it originated as a Bluesky post, which isn't anything I know how to embed here.  Some of its gems:

"Tired of paying too much to call the police on your Black neighbors?"

"Is spotty reception keeping you from texting ICE about the taco truck outside your church?"

"More than just unlimited crazy talk and hateful texts to your sane relatives, Trump Mobile lets you make international calls to 100 destinations, like Russia, North Korea, and Epstein Island."

"Trump Mobile.  Can you fear me now?"

The whole thing is great; give it a look (you don't need a Bluesky account to be able to see it [I don't have one].)

TYep. And I don't ever, EVER want to hear any more lectures about how we need to be the "nice" ones, how we need to just treat Trump and his cronies more kindly and be respectful and how we're the ones who need to learn to reach across the aisle. Fuck. That. You first, Trump and MAGA. I truly don't get how these people aren't embarrassed and ashamed by their support of this asshole.

Michelle Obama (and her husband Barack!) exemplifies being an awesome human 99/100 times but when she said "When they go low, we go high", she clearly hadn't ever met Trump or any of his sycophants.

She can probably feel them in her bones and skin, imagining all the nasty things they say about her and Barack.

I would like to take the high road all the time, but MAGA forces me to wonder, “Do I have to buy a wood chipper, or can I rent one for a few days?”

Jimmy Kimmel had a Trump Phone commercial during his monologue tonight. The ad itself begins at 8:54, although the lead-in to it starts at 6:43.

Republicans changed the rules.  There used to be a modicum of civility in politics.  I mean sure there were always extremists but the Republican party is now run by the extremists and their base is extremists. Playing nice with them gets Democrats nowhere.

I get it.

My inlaws live in Louisiana and have had to evacuate several times over the years. They had FEMA help replacing appliances, flooring, and roof repair....not  as bad of destruction from the rain, storms, wind, as others but the $ saved their homes from falling apart.

My family lives in the Midwest ...Tornado Alley. They are afraid of storms now, because there may not be any alarm warnings...as so many previous victims reported this year.

So,  why don't we see the atrocities on the news more blaming Trump & Co.????

I would really love to see any interviews that ask magas in affected areas about their views of the cuts in Fema from the  current adm, or  whomever it is they're holding responsible right now in 2025.

I deleted my FB account shortly after the election in November. My friends, who I was in a daily messenger thread with, begged me to come back. I recently relented, with a vow to ignore politics completely there. One childhood friend checked to make sure I wasn't hacked and told me she never addresses politics. She rarely does, but today she posted re the assassinations last weekend, that she's NEVER seen this level of hate in politics. I refrained from pointing out that she was in 3rd grade, same as me, when our PRESIDENT was assassinated! I do know what she means, though and she's a good person, but violence has been typical of our country for a very long time! I get what she's saying though. Because of the Radical Right and the misinformation networks, we are in a very bad place right now. 😢

If he gets us involved in Israel's war with Iran his poll numbers are going to plummet.  There are already right wing media figures sounding the alarm about Trump wanting to get involved.

Sadly I think the process requires a war to follow the parade. While civil war has its charms, of course, you don’t want people to examine it too closely. A militant distraction fits the bill, while keeping the MAGA boys excited.

And/or his people may say something like “holding steady” [not verbalizing 38%] and Trump then recalls his past, high polls — the way elderly people in cognitive decline tend to clearly recall the more distant past.

I'm thinking Trump doesn't even listen ( or can hear) his staff about any data. He just goes to his standby phrases: biggest, best, highest, most, hugely, greatest, most beautiful, etc... when it comes to anything about him or what he's doing/done.

Meaningless.

He's a 1-trick pony or black/white frame of reference regarding his perspective.

Trump lives in an echo chamber.  Nobody ever tells him anything bad about polls. At least in his first term some people pushed back.

Not just his polls.  No one who has any ability to actually do anything pushes back, instead they enable him.

This  caught my eye: "Senate Republicans largely lined up behind President Donald Trump's handling of the conflict between Iran and Israel and said they trusted Trump's judgment"

What weird alternate universe have we stumbled into where grown adults who, presumably, have interacted with this man on some regular basis over the past almost 10 years, actually feel this way?

Big cry baby’s on a roll today while supervising the installation of his two big beautiful flag poles on the White House lawn

What stood out to me was when a reporter asked him if his recent dust ups with Governor Newsom would impact additional wildfire relief

Trump: Yeah, maybe…hatred is never a good thing in politics. When you don’t like somebody you don’t respect somebody it’s harder for that person to get money when you’re on top”

Jesus Christ, this is beyond horrific. What's next? Cordoning off entire neighborhoods and dragging people from their homes? Deporting anyone who says something Donald doesn't like? In some countries, they execute you for criticizing the government. Is that the end game here?

I didn't know there were so many gang members doing laundry and working kitchens, now tending horses too? I'm just shocked! As your article briefly mentions:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday told staff it was reversing guidance issued last week that agents were not to conduct immigration raids at farms, hotels and restaurants, the Washington Post reported.

I guess they couldn't find anyone to work $5/day. This is what people voted for though.

I heard a Farmer Worker's Union president on the radio say workers are terrified and/or skipping work amid ongoing farm raids. When the reporter asked if she was shocked about this when Trump explicitly said there'd be mass deportations last year, she said she was "very surprised" because he said he was only going to deport criminals, not hard working farm workers 🙄

A lot of farmers and union leaders supported Trump last year, time and time again they never learn 😒

Colbert mentioned on his show last night that it's been 10 years since Trump infamously came down that escalator to announce his campaign for president.

And all I could think was, "It's only been ten years?"

But yeah, echoing everyone else here, like I've said before, this guy behaves like an overgrown toddler (with all apologies to actual toddlers). I don't understand how it's so hard to just put him in time out and tell him to shut the fuck up for five minutes while the adults do their jobs.

Between now and his first go-round in the White House, have his poll numbers EVER been above 50%? And if so, how brief was that spike?

I just do not understand how someone who continually polls as one of the most unpopular presdients in history managed to get back into the White House again, and is staying there besides.

Today I see it’s been reported that he took down Hilary Clinton’s White House portrait which hung between Laura Bush’s and Pat Nixon’s and replaced it with a framed picture of himself with an American flag imprinted on his face

Not only did he have to have two massive flag poles installed he also had the grass in the rose garden paved over because women with high heels couldn’t walk on grass (that after Melania redesigned it because she thinks she has better taste then Jackie Kennedy)

He had a tree that was planted in memory of JFK removed

I’m sure there’s more including the schlock he’s decorated the Oval Office with but I’m at the point where I wouldn’t care if the White House burned down the way he’s disrespected and trashed it

This guy is really showing his mental issues now. Putting up a framed picture of himself among the First Lady portraits? It also shows he's not running the country. If he were, he'd be too busy in the oval office to be obsessed with First Lady portraits.

I don't even know what to say anymore. 😞

Last night there was this out of Ohio, the state where in 2023, Ohioans voted by a large majority to amend their constitution to protect abortion rights. The majority Republican state congress says, not so fast.

Ohio Republican bill would treat abortion as homicide, ban all abortions in state

The ultimate goal is to challenge Ohio's abortion rights amendment in the U.S. Supreme Court, supporter of the bill says

Now tonight this, which will have far-reaching national effects.

US judge invalidates Biden rule protecting privacy for abortions

https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-judge-invalidates-biden-rule-231546502.html

A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a rule adopted by the administration of former President Joe Biden that strengthened privacy protections for women seeking abortions and patients who receive gender transition treatments.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exceeded its powers and unlawfully limited states' ability to enforce their public health laws when it adopted the rule last year.

The rule prohibits healthcare providers and insurers from giving information about a legal abortion to state law enforcement authorities who are seeking to punish someone in connection with that abortion.

Yeah. :(

I was really happy when we won that election in 2023.  We'd already gone through the special election to vote on Issue 1, where they tried to raise the percentage to 60% to be reached, for an amendment to pass. This, after they'd decided we shouldn't have special elections during the Summer - until we had petitions circulating everywhere, to get abortion on the ballot. We won both of those, and I really thought that things were changing for the better.

But the GOP has a grip on this State, and they didn't really believe in state's rights, and letting the people decide.
