Milk-Eyed Mender May 9 Share May 9 I posted The Onion's Chicago dog meme because I thought it was a sweet, silly, and completely complimentary juxtaposition of two world-famous Chicago exports. The Pope Donald meme features a crude, cruel, racist, xenophobic, grifting, convicted felon and adjudicated rapist as the Vicar of Christ, and because the president himself blasted it out to the world on the heels of Pope Francis' death, it's going to land differently for people in mourning. 15 1 4 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657218
lookeyloo May 9 Share May 9 8 hours ago, Yeah No said: Forgive me, I'm hopelessly behind on this thread, but this reminded me of "accent prejudice", which I experienced when I was young and had a rather noticeable NYC accent. When I worked at my university after graduation I felt snubbed and looked down upon for my accent by people from other areas that either worked at the school or were looking for a school (I worked in Admissions). They associated it with being low class and ignorant. My accent was more of an upper Manhattan/West Bronx accent, which was not as identifiable as a classic Brooklyn or Queens accent, but it still had that effect on people. I responded to the snubbing by doing my best to get rid of it. I succeeded to some degree then but it changed even more when I moved to CT. I still get asked if I'm from NYC but a lot less often than I used to, and they always admit that I don't have a full blown accent, it's just the way I pronounce certain words that clued them in. Anyway, Southerners often identify with this. When they come up North they often experience this kind of prejudice. I'm sure people from many other areas and countries feel it too. Like I'm sure Hispanics who have an accent experience this too, as do African Americans. So you're saying that in this context "privilege" and "systemic advantages" are being used interchangeably - I've read that they can be used that way but I still see a technical difference between them. I do accept the phrase "systemic advantages" as correct, though. I just had to say - this rings a bell with me. I was raised in NJ and lived for 5 years in Brooklyn. Then the ex was sent to Warner Robins, GA for two years in the military. 1970-72. My accent! Interestingly, the other wives I hung with were from the northeast too. Everywhere we went it was "You're not from here, are you?" We were tickled by the southern accent. Then moved to California for three years, sort of blended in. Then to Baton Rouge for over 40 years and my accent got less. I would go back to NJ over the years and family would say "You talk so southern" and for a while still got "You're not from here, are you?". But Baton Rouge population increased a lot with people from all over, so less noticeable. Now live back in metro Atlanta and it is very diverse and no one cares or notices anymore. Lots of different accents of varying degrees, and languages. I love a richly diverse area to live in. 5 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657219
Yeah No May 9 Share May 9 On 5/7/2025 at 2:27 AM, Soapy Goddess said: His #1 promise (which got him elected) was to secure our border, and he did that. His supporters feel safe as he continues to keep that promise. I find it interesting that Obama deported 3 million non-citizens during his tenure, and yet nobody protested. And you can't tell me that all 3 million received "due process" either. But when Trump deports, everyone is up in arms. The double standard between the parties is outstanding & hypocritical. Speaking for myself, no, he does not get a pass for all the shitty stuff. Like many of you, I lost half of my 401K too, but I didn't panic. Is it back to where it was? No, but it's close, and the market will come back. Was the border really his #1 promise, at least in 2024? Because IIRC, this time his #1 promise was fixing the economy and lowering the price of groceries, specifically eggs, both of which he did not do and backpedaled on immediately after taking office. Egg prices went down somewhat (and not enough) because of the decline of the bird flu this season - for now. But grocery prices continue to go up and will go up even further thanks to Trump's tariffs. And did he really fix the border? From what I've read undocumented border crossings actually increased to Obama era levels during his first presidency, despite what he'd have you believe. And while he built 500 miles of wall during his first presidency, most of it was to replace wall that was already there. Very few areas got entirely new wall. Both per these articles: https://www.semafor.com/article/02/08/2024/did-trump-really-fix-the-border https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/rnc-trump-speech-biden-election-2024/card/did-trump-build-the-wall--0MOGuZRPjtpeCGpZClpT Now I will grant you that undocumented immigration increased a LOT during Biden's presidency (see the chart in that first article), and I was not in favor of that nor were most Democrats. And I hate to say that I don't think Harris was able to convince enough people that she would be tougher on the border. And that was unfortunate. She got compared to Biden because she was his VP but she may have been tougher on the border than he was. And actually Obama was very tough on the border comparatively, even tougher than Trump if you include deportations. They used to call him "The deporter in chief" for a reason. And he may actually have violated due process in the process, but nobody protested because he didn't engage in high profile media-bait stunts to make a big show of how tough he was on immigration like Trump has. Trump wants people to think they are felons, which is unfair because they are not. The nastiness factor is high with him. I don't know many people that aren't for the deportation of known criminals, but Trump deports people that aren't and shouldn't be deported. I don't personally know of any cases where Obama did that. I hope he didn't, but I'm sure that if he did it wasn't intentional. But with Trump it is, and he doesn't even care about that man that was mistakenly deported and wants to claim it was justified. Do we really know if it was justified? That photo linking him to MS-13 is in question. More research needed to be done. Now he doesn't even care if the guy rots in prison unfairly. Nice guy, huh? NOT. So as usual where Trump is concerned, a lot of the bluster is just bluster and when you put a microscope to it, it doesn't match up to the reality. And so if the border is the main reason one voted for Trump, I'd say they didn't even get what he advertised there either. Did you really lose half of your 401K? As of right now I haven't lost anywhere near that - not by a mile. Have you checked it recently? Since Trump realized that he was affecting the bond market he's slacked off on the tariff BS and the market has been going back up. Here's hoping he had some sense talked into him, although I don't trust that because he's shown himself to be a "loose cannon". 8 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657220

DrSpaceman73 May 9 Share May 9 Obama wasn't deporting people to foreign jails. People at the border were denied entry or turned back to their prior countries. These are often included in numbers deported when they aren't all the same. Those in the country already and sent back aren't the same as those turned away trying to enter. I've seen many posts and memes trying to compare prior border policies to trumps. And No theyre not the same. The prior presidents did it legally. Trump pushing the limits and ignoring the constitution when he chooses to do so. Trump also is revoking prior protected status for immigrants already here created by prior presidents. This is another example where the republicans can't pick a side. They want to try and compare it to prior presidents deporting people as well saying it's just like that but at the same time claim he is somehow doing it better and also that the prior presidents didn't do enough. All can't be true. For the record I didn't vote for Obama or Trump. https://english.elpais.com/usa/2024-11-19/trump-deported-fewer-people-than-obama-clinton-or-bush-but-more-indiscriminately.html 7 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657234

Bastet May 9 Share May 9 5 hours ago, Anela said: Make America White Again. Ship POC off to foreign prisons and replace them with imported fans of apartheid. Quote On the same day Trump appointed FOX personality Jeanine Pirro as Interim DC US attorney Oh good, now Pete Hegseth will have a drinking buddy. Chris Murphy had many, many words for Kristi Noem when she appeared before the Appropriations Committee: If you're like me and reading is much faster: Quote I say this with seriousness and respect, but your department is out of control. You’re spending like you don’t have a budget. You are running out of money for this fiscal year. You are illegally refusing to spend funds that have been authorized by this Congress and appropriated by this committee. You are ignoring the immigration laws of this nation, implementing a brand new immigration system that you have invented that has little relation to the statutes that you are required to follow as spelled out in your oath of office. You are routinely violating the rights of immigrants who may not be citizens, but whether you like it or not, they have constitutional and statutory rights when they reside in the United States. Your agency acts as if laws don’t matter, as if the election gave you some mandate to violate the Constitution and the laws passed by this Congress. It did not give you that mandate. You act as if your disagreement with the law, or even the public’s disagreement with the law, is relevant and gives you the ability to create your own law. It does not give you that ability. Let’s start with your spending. You are on track to trigger the anti-deficiency act. That means you are on track to spend more money than you have been allocated by Congress. This is a rare occurrence and it is wildly illegal. Your agency will be broke by July, over 2 months before the end of the fiscal year. You may not think that Congress has allotted enough money to ICE, but the Constitution and the federal law does not allow you to spend more money than you have been given or to invent money. This obsession with spending at the border has left the country unprotected elsewhere. The security threats to national security are higher, not lower, since Trump came to office. To fund the border you have illegally gutted spending to cybersecurity. As we speak, Russian and Chinese hackers are having a field day attacking our nation. You have withdrawn funds for disaster prevention. Storms are going to kill more people because of your illegal withholding of these funds. Your myopia about the border fueled by President Trump’s prejudice against people who speak a different language have shattered most of this country’s most important defenses. Now let’s talk about the impoundments. When Congress appropriates funds for a specific purpose the administration has no discretion whether or not to spend that money unless you go through a specific process with this committee. Let me give you two of many instances of this illegal impoundment. The first is a shelter and services program. Senator Britt may want to zero that account out, but that account is funded in a bipartisan way. You may not like the program. Your policy is to treat migrants badly. I think that’s abhorrent, but it doesn’t matter that you don’t like the program. You cannot cancel spending in this program, and you cannot use the funds, as you have, to fund other things, like ICE. You have also cancelled citizenship and integration grants, which help lawful permanent residents become citizens, helping them take the citizenship test. I know your goal is to try to make life as hard as possible for immigrants, but that goal is not broadly shared by the American public. That’s why Congress, in a bipartisan way, for decades has funded this program to help immigrants become citizens. Now let’s talk about why encounters at the southern border are down so much. This is clearly going to be your primary talking point today. You will tell us that it represents as success. But the prime reason why encounters are down is because you are brazenly violating the law every hour of every day. You are refusing to allow people showing up at the southern border to apply for asylum. I acknowledge that you don’t believe that people should be allowed to apply for asylum, but the White House doesn’t get to choose that. The law requires you to process people who are showing up at the border to apply for asylum. Why? Because our asylum law is a bipartisan commitment, an effort to correct for our nation’s unconscionable decision to deny entry to Jews to this country who were being hunted and killed by the Nazis. Our nation, Republicans and Democrats, decided, wrote it into law, that we would not repeat that horror ever again, and thus we would allow for people who were fleeing terror and torture to come here, arrive at the border, and make a case for asylum. Finally let’s talk about these disappearances. In an autocratic society, people who the regime does not like or who are protesting the regime are often picked up off the street, and spirited away, often to open-ended detention. Sometimes they’re never seen again. What you are doing, both to individuals who have legal rights to stay here, like Kilmar Abrego Garcia, or students who are just protesting Trump’s policies, is immoral and, to follow the theme, it is illegal. You have no right to deport a student visa holder with no due process simply because they have spoken in a way that offends the President. You can’t remove migrants who a court has given humanitarian protection from removal. Now, reports suggest that you are planning to remove immigrants with no due process and send them to prisons in Libya. Libya is in the middle of a civil war. It is subject to a level 4 travel advisory, meaning we tell American citizens never to travel to Libya. We don’t have an embassy there because it is not safe for our diplomats. Sending migrants with pending asylum claims into a war zone, just because it’s cruel, is so deeply disturbing. Listen, I understand that my Republican colleagues on this committee don’t view the policy as I do, don’t share my level of concern for the way the government treats immigrants, but what I don’t understand is why we don’t have consensus in the Senate and on this committee on the decision by this Administration to impound the spending that we have decided together to allocate in defense of this nation. We as an appropriations committee worked interminable hours to write and pass this budget, and so we make ourselves irrelevant when we allow the administration to ignore what we have decided. And then when we look the other way when the administration rounds up immigrants who are here illegally and have committed no offenses worthy of detainment, we also do potential irreversible damage to the Constitution. These should not be partisan concerns—destroying the power of Congress, eroding individuals’ Constitutional rights. This should matter to both parties. 6 2 1 1 15 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657472

And Biden didn't do a damn thing to curtail this. Instead, the undocumented were given room & board and medical attention, all on OUR dime. People are/were sick & tired of our tax dollars funding this. In January, 2024 a bipartisan Senate committee had completed four months of work to produce an actual Immigration Bill, not just a stopgap measure. Mitch McConnell said he expected a unanimous "Yes" vote in the Senate on the bill. Unheard of; should have been cause for celebration by all, but then-candidate Trump told the Republicans not to bring it to the floor because he had to be able to run his campaign on the "mess at the border." And so, that "mess" was perpetuated, because of Donald Trump. People who are truly concerned about US immigration policy would have voted for Kamala Harris, who repeatedly said that if Congress were to pass the Immigration bill they had all worked so hard on and it came to her desk, she would sign it immediately. 14 1 4 9 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657496

On CBS News this week Senator James Langford (R OK) who crafted the bipartisan border bill that Trump killed said he believes the US would be better off today had his bill passed last year ”It should have passed. It would have fixed a lot of loopholes in the law that would have made it easier to do law enforcement now. Was the bill everything that I wanted? No. I was negotiating with the Democratic White House at the time to be able to get it done. But many of the areas that we need to close loopholes were in that bill” 10 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657592

Annber03 May 9 Share May 9 Yeah, that's the thing Trump supporters keep conveniently forgetting when they criticize Biden for things relating to immigration - there WAS a bill ready to be passed when he was in office, a bill that both parties would've agreed to and signed off on. But Trump kiled it, and his party folded and went along with his demand the right not support it, because god forbid Biden and the Democrats get a win. Trump supporters need to understand, the GOP has absolutely no interest in actually legitimately solving any issues relating to immigration and the border. They won't ever support any actual real solutions to the issue, solutions that would protect people here AND those who come from other counttries and keep everyone safe, whether they're U.S. citizens or not. No, they'll be happy to let the chaos continue so they can keep the issue going as their main culture war topic to run on and fire up their base (when they aren't taking the time out of their day to beat up on transgender people or the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, that is). Oh, sure, they'll happily pull stunts like the sort they're doing now, with ICE raids and going after individuals and sending them to horrific prisons, but all of that has nothing to do with actually solving the border crisis and everything to do with making their racist and xenophobic base happy. And if you're a Trump supporter who is cheering on these insane raids and harassment of individuals for simply lookng "suspicious" or "illegal", then congratulations, you're playing right into their hands and proving to the rest of us just how racist and xenophobic you really are. 5 8 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657606

tres bien May 9 Share May 9 (edited) On one hand Trump says the border is under control unlike we’ve ever seen before in history. Crime is dramatically down across the board but we’re under such an invasion that we’re actively looking at suspending the Writ of Habeas Corpus Trump will make a decision based on if the courts do the right thing or not. Meaning that judges have to stop blocking the administration from deporting undocumented immigrants He’s determined to be judge and jury and ain’t no one gonna stop him Edited May 10 by tres bien 3 2 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657614

He wants some ICE agent to be shot. Then he can declare martial law, suspend elections and it will al be over. Annber03 May 9 Share May 9 I still want Trump supporters to explain to me why immigrants are expected to follow the law, but Trump doesn't have to do so. Trump can flaunt court orders all he wants and that's okay, but immigrants can't dare step out of line in any way, otherwise they apparently deserve whatever punishment they get. Just. Explain that one to me, guys. Why are we holding our citizens to a higher standard of legallty than the leader of the free world? 12 1 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657622
Affogato May 9 Share May 9 Most of Trumps executive orders follow the agenda of project 2025. I have heard, I haven’t done the comparisons, but it makes sense. Space Karen and Doge took an indescriminate axe to the government, tearing out its guts so it probably can’t be repaired. None of this was done to save money and taxpayer money was not saved, it was taken into the hands of the executive branch, where it can be used not only to distract the ‘king’ with shiny, but to rebuild the world to the profit of big businessmen. The immigrant issue was noticed to have some traction with the populace and was used to distract them. The ICE capades are a very expensive circus that is keeping them from paying attention to the total loss of any protections or conveniences the government afforded them. If that, as @Soapy Goddess believes, was his primary issue he ran on for his loyal voters, that is really, really sad. Not even taking into account that apparently if someone and their nubile daughter were to be dumped suddenly and naked into a convention, they would statistically be better treated in a auditorium full of illegal immigrants than at a MAGA rally. More likely to be given the shirts off someone’s back, offered food, and not heckled , in any case. Trump is a creepy man, he talks in that falsetto, sing song voice like a pedophile offering candy to a girl in the park. “Can I touch your hair? Beautiful hair.” And he always talks down to everyone, it is practiced and it drips contempt. He is hard to listen to at all, even if he did have much to say. 19 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657661

If he didn’t follow the law it was a mistake. And in the past. And it would be ‘complex’ to fix. It is a ‘complex’ issue, don’t you know? Like he did with his felonies. It is how he goes through life in general, I’m sure he never is the one who doesn’t clean up his spilled coke and never the one who wets the bed. 8 1 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657673
PRgal May 10 Share May 10 (edited) Historica Canada just dropped its latest Heritage Minute, right in time for Jewish Heritage Month: Historica Canada has been producing Heritage Minutes, bits and pieces of Canada's history as a form of educating Canadians and other people who live in the country (and abroad!) for decades. Or should this have been on the feminist thread? p.s. In case you're wondering, there's one for Asian Heritage Month (also May) too. It dropped last year: Edited May 10 by PRgal 1 1 2 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657776

He did, but some places have received aid. Considering the number of natural disasters we’ve seen in recent years it will be unpleasant to watch the next year unfold. I don’t remember if he has any particular beef with Huckabee. Certainly most of his previous, more professional associates from his first term have turned on him and he is a sensitive soul, it wouldn’t take much. 8 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/150441-chit-chat-the-feels/page/275/#findComment-8657855
