Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

Recommended Posts

I got Friday's FJ, although it wasn't an istaget.  The names told me it had to be something Italian, and while I first thought of The Divine Comedy, I realized the specific mention of 10 main narrators was important, and that got me to The Decameron in plenty of time to write it down legibly.

I got 10 stumpers/missed DDs: caveman, scowl, paintball, Wilhelmina, Jean Lafitte, Gettysburg, euphemism, expletive, Gauguin and Nude Descending A Staircase.  That there were 8 more stumpers which I did not get speaks very poorly of this particular game.

I guess I never got over it. I just pulled this box out of my pantry to take a picture. 🙂 The "Extra Noodle" variety didn't exist in the '60s, but sometimes when I can't quite put my finger on what I'm craving, but I need a touch of comfort food, I open my pantry door, see the Lipton box and think, "That'll do," and I'm a kid again slurping dehydrated soup. (Only now with extra carbs. 😄)

Edited to add: I never thought to drop an egg in to make faux egg drop soup, but that's a great idea @Prevailing Wind!

I've switched that craving to chicken top ramen - which I make plain, or jazz it up with some sesame oil, smoked sausage and frozen veg . But only Top Ramen, the other ramen brands don't do it for me.

In J I missed one each in Minerology, That Food is Fire, Letter Perfect, and Marshall, and two in Landlocked States by Cities and Court. In DJ I ran We've Got Rights, missed one in It Ain't Shakespeare, two in Jeopaortmanteau!, three in Ancient Persia and Suburban Legend, and four in Movie & Song Same Title. Had no clue for FJ.

TSes: (Lots! J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 11 + both DDs) I got garnet, Mediteranean & Red Seas, Reno, retrospectacles, Bashfulcrum, and anachronistickup.

Not a clue for FJ.  I was stuck on Texas Instruments as the company, but even if that had been the right company, I wouldn't have known who the CEO was.  And then I got distracted thinking about my first TI calculator, before I got my beloved HP.

I got several TS, though, including North Dakota, Arkansas, Bashfulcrum, Red & Mediterranean, Reno, Babe, Diane Arbus, and catamarancid.

I went to the cupboard just today because I craved salty instantness (no, not a real word and too long for Wordle).  I knew I had some packets of "cup a soup" but no, it was something that took 20 minutes, TWENTY MINUTES, to cook.

The Arkansas clue caused "East Bound and Down" (the Smokey & the Bandit theme song) to get stuck in my head -- "The boys are thirsty in Atlanta, and there's beer in Texarcana, and we'll bring it back no matter what it takes".

I almost ran the entire first round, getting everything except McLuhan and crepes Suzette.

I also had a great DJ -- I ran the portmanteau category they blew (and had great fun all along the way), along with suburban, rights, and same title.  I missed three in Persia, but that was my only bad category (I missed two in Shakespeare).

I had no idea for FJ, though.

Noodles, schmoodles. Haven’t you people ever heard of frozen pizza?

I don’t usually keep track of my responses during the regular rounds, but I was proud of myself for getting every Jeoportmanteau, while none of the contestants knew any of them.

FJ was the kind of category that would terrify me if I were on the show. I live in Texas, so to miss a Texas FJ would be humiliating. Fortunately, I would have done just fine. Michael Dell is a legend ‘round these here parts! (Yee haw, I guess?)

Me, too.  I did think "Who founded Texas Instruments?" but that didn't help me.

I didn't get that but did get both Bashfulcrum and catamarancid.  And like Katy M, I couldn't believe no one got Arkansas.  Or even guessed Texas, which presumably would've been wrong based on the other town, but still.  As Ken said, it's right there in the name: Texas + Arkansas = Texarkana.

There were so many stumpers I couldn't keep track of them all.  Not a good game at all.

Yep, you get married in Vega and divorced in Reno.

I didn't get that one because my mind went to "rotten" for the second part and of course I couldn't come up with a boat for that and then I ran out of time to try to come up with another word for rotten.

The Reno clue - "A 1930s movie comedy about 3 couples in varying states of unhappiness is titled "Merry Wives of" this then-divorce capital" - threw me because I had no idea it wasn't still a divorce capital.  I guess I've been watching too much old TV & movies.

Well, presumably it's a lot easier to get divorced in most states these days, you don't need to go to Reno.

Even going to Reno for the "quickie" divorce wasn't very quick. You had to stay there for 6 weeks first. I remember Mary in The Women (and maybe more in The Opposite Sex) staying at a ranch (that I believe specifically marketed itself to potential divorcees) for the duration.

In J I ran Children's Author and Remembrance of Smells Past, missed one in Change a Letter and Sitcoms, two in World History, and three in Metro Stations. In DJ I ran Diamond Anniversary, missed one in Special "EFF"ects, two in Village, Biochem, and Oscar for Acting, and three in Opera. Did not get FJ (also guessed Merrily We Roll Along just because it sounds Disney-ish and I had no other ideas).

TSes: (J had 1 + the DD; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got infer/inter (DD), muscular dystrophy, effortless, Majorca (DD), and Bohr.

Andrew reminds me of Adam Pally.

There was music in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?? I only know about the movie (although I’m not sure I’ve seen the whole thing) and while I do get the pun, I don’t know how Disney music fits in to a story about two drunks yelling at each other.

It's the title - "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"  Mentioning a song made me first think of a musical, but it's just the title based on the title of a Disney song.

Not just the title -- Martha says/sings it as a joke in the script as well (more than once, I believe). But it's just that line, not a whole musical number or anything.

I get that part— but the clue said they couldn’t use the song because of licensing issues, so they used bits of “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” instead. That, to me, implies that thy used it more than once in the show. And that music was important to the show, otherwise why use it at all?

Was Martha singing “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush?” How did that fit with the title of the play? I still don’t get it.

I knew I was wrong too when I said Bill Gates. I had it in my head for some unknown reason that he was from Texas (he's not) and of course, the dates were wrong for him. The mister got Dell right off.

In J I ran Knives Out, missed one in 2 E or not 2 E, two in Picture the Hit Song, and three in Stump You, On Guard, and That is the Question. In DJ I missed one in Trick or Treaty, Authors' Homes, and Fun Around the US, two in Box Office, and three in Rhyme Time.

Didn't get FJ. Thinking about donuts…

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 7 + 1 DD) I got Praetorian Guard, Peter, Colombia, dirge urge (DD), better fetter, and false witness.

Nothing against Andrew but I kinda found myself rooting for Brandon, so yay.

On the one hand, i was disappointed nobody knew about Sojourner Truth.

On the other hand, maybe they did know, because that "Aint I A Woman?" line was not actually what she said.

https://www.thesojournertruthproject.com/compare-the-speeches/

I thought the clue was carefully worded not to claim that she had said it, just that that was how it was known: "In 1851 in Akron, Sojourner Truth delivered a speech called this 4-word rhetorical question"

Good for Brandon!  Wouldn't it have been fun if his sister had gotten the call at the same time?

My brothers Tom and Jim were both on Jeopardy in 2018, April and July IIRC.  When Alex did Jim's interview part, though, they didn't mention that Tom had been there 3 months previous!

Then again, my sister Ro and I were both on WWTBAM with Regis- me in May 2000 and her for the 10th anniversary shows in 2009 (neither of us won any money as our shows used the old "fast finger" round and I, at least, had slooooowwwww fingers.)  If one of us makes it to Jeopardy, guess we can use that as a story?

Pretty good first round…ran First Lines of Hit Songs, missed one in Nonfiction, Early 21st Century, Barrel of Monkeys, and Supreme Court, and two in "Amp"ed Up. The less said about DJ, the better…missed two in Name on the Disease and "L.O.", three in Desert and Category Good, four in Sailor, and failed Royal Roles completely. Did not get FJ (what kind of donuts do people like...?).

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 9) I got Cher, Nixon, Doppelganger, horse racing, live oaks, and Grave's disease. I know leprosy is also called Hansen's Disease but it just didn't come to me in time.

Archive game for me.

The Cher TS was a bummer.

Thinking Clinton would have nominated Clarence Thomas was ... something.

I ran "amp" and Supreme Court, but otherwise the first round was a tale of "so close!" -- I missed one each ("Royals" in songs, Shepard Fairey in 21st c, monkey puzzle tree in monkeys, and Doppelganger in nonfiction).

As anticipated, I was terrible in royal roles, only getting Princess Margaret (and as a lucky guess) and I missed three in sailor, but otherwise DJ went well -- I ran disease and got all but Great Victoria in deserts (seeing the picture wouldn't have helped), all but lion rampant in category good (another where the picture wouldn't have helped), and all but Larry O'Brien in L.O.

I had no idea for FJ, though.

Phyllis Schlafly was against women's rights, so I wonder what the thinking was behind that answer.

Molly Brown came into my mind right away but then I started wondering about Schlafly since she argued that women were better off without equal rights so that they would not be subject to the draft for example. So if "Women demand equal rights on land -- why not at sea?" expected the response "because they should be protected and allowed first place in the lifeboats with the children" it would fit.

Thanks. Can't be it because I am not familiar with him though. I think it's possible it could be Billy Eichner.

“Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” was the very first record I bought with my allowance money. I guess I can’t be mad at the contestants for not knowing it, as I can’t remember the last time I heard (of) it.

I don’t really get how “women and children first” in a rescue situation relates to women’s equality. Seems like the opposite to me. Placing women in the same group as children infantilizes the women. Of course children should be saved first, but if men and women have equal rights, shouldn’t they have equal rights to the remaining lifeboats once the children are gone?

I’m just arguing this in theory, of course. If someone offers me a seat on the lifeboat, I’m taking it. I’m not an idiot.

There's a radio station I sometimes listen to that plays totally random music -- you never know if you're going to hear something new or from the fifties, rap or big band.  They played "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" the other day.  And I sang along.

That record was the first one I owned too.  It came with the Mickey Mouse record player my parents gave me for Christmas.

I'm not sure Molly Brown was equating the two, exactly, but then I don't know the context of the quote.  She led a fascinating life.  Titanic wouldn't have been the mostly dull slog it was (sinking excepted, of course) if it had been more about her and less about stupid Jack and Rose.

There is more context mentioned in this post which I found interesting.
