Holy shit.

Yeah... that could be a hell of a problem for FN.

All of the hyping him up and feel good stories that they do about all of the chefs isn't going to go over well with anybody in the audience who is aware of the strangulation and menacing charges.

Can't imagine they could just edit him out, although they probably could just skip his rounds entirely (if he loses relatively early on) and just show three matches in the two hours and flash up the brackets with no mention of him or his match.

Right, but since these are head to head competitions you can't edit just him out.  That would look weird.  You can skip the entire round, like JTM said.  I would feel bad for the other chef, though.

For his other shows, it would be easy enough just to shelf Superchef Grudge Match, and with a new season just have "Grudge Match" or something (if they want to keep the show going without him).

I'm really saddened by this news.  Guy had him on triple G many times.  It would be hard to edit him out of those.

Yes, it is sad news. He always seemed like such a nice, happy go lucky sort of guy. All the other chefs seemed to like him a lot.  You never know I guess...

As far as GGG, I don't see how they could edit him out, they would probably have to just not rerun any shows with him in it. That doesn't seem fair to the other participants, but what else could FN really do? Invite those others back for another show maybe??

I, too, was shocked when I heard about Darnell's arrest.  I first saw him in The Great Thanksgiving Challenge (or something close to that title).  Then, I remember him saying somewhere----could have been TOC, but I don't remember---that he had been arrested and jailed earlier in his life.  With cooking and becoming a Food Network personality, it seemed like he had made positive change.

To read about the violence and menacing that he's accused of was jarring and disconcerting.  That he's potentially been able to project this positive personality over the ability to be incredibly violent and aggressive. It saddens me that what he showed the world on FN seems like it was a mask.

If that's the case, then he needs intervention and his ex-partners and all his children need to feel safe.

I read in a PEOPLE article that the grand jury will meet the week of 2/19.

Even if the grand jury doesn't indict him, I think his public life will never be the same again.  The allegations are simply too serious.

Top Chef And Tournament Of Champions Favorites Show Support For Shirley Chung After Cancer Diagnosis

Quote

Top Chef, of course, isn’t the only competition show Shirley Chung has had success in. The dumpling queen has also been a mainstay on Food Network’s Tournament Of Champions. She competed in Seasons 3, 4 and 5, winning at least one round every year and getting to the quarterfinals once. You can tell from her interactions on the show that she’s well-liked by many of the other chefs. Not surprisingly, quite a few reached out to offer their support, as well including Brooke Williamson, Mei Lin, Antonia Lofaso, Tiffany Faison, Maneet Chauhan, Jet Tila, Tobias Dorzan, Michaeol Voltaggio, Mark Murphy, Crista Luedtke, Joe Sasto, Brian Malarkey, Britt Rescigno, Elizabeth Faulkner, Amanda Freitag as well as interviewer Simon Majumdar and judges Andrew Zimmern, Alex Guarnaschelli and Lorena Garcia.

Guy Fieri hosting a fund raiser for Shirley.

I know the mention of money would likely be publicly indelicate, but I wish this fundraiser could be broadcast on FN.  Many TOC chefs are going to work the event, and Shirley's been a TOC competitor.  Some fans of TOC might enjoy seeing Shirley's fellow chefs rallying around her.

I think it's a dad thing.  Hunter's his kid.  Guy has a helpful, generous personality anyway.  That's going to come out even more for his child.

I get it but I feel like Hunter is being shoved down our throats. Let the kid go do his own thing instead of riding his father's coat tails. At this point, he should be doing so. He got the exposure, now go for it.

Tiffani Faison joins Justin Warner, replacing Simon Majumdar, as TOC sideline reporter.  Hunter Fieri follows the action backstage, interviewing the winning chefs for their reactions to the competition.  Simon Majumdar takes on a new role as the Judges’ Correspondent, getting the judges’ takes on why a dish won or lost.

This season’s competing chefs will include Karen Akunowicz, Kaleena Bliss, Sara Bradley, Chris Cosentino, Rocco DiSpirito, Tobias Dorzon, Amanda Freitag, Stephanie Izard, Kevin Lee, Antonia Lofaso, Tim Love, Shota Nakajima, Nini Nguyen, Michael Reed, Britt Rescigno, Joe Sasto, Chris Scott, Adam Sobel, Dale Talde, Casey Thompson, Jet Tila, Fabio Viviani, Lee Anne Wong and Claudette Zepeda plus eight additional winners from the qualifiers tournament.

Maneet Chauhan, Mei Lin, and Brooke Williamson will join judges Scott Conant, Cat Cora, Susan Feniger, Alex Guarnaschelli, Mary Sue Milliken, Charlie Palmer, Wolfgang Puck, Marcus Samuelsson, Nancy Silverton, Martha Stewart, Michael Symon, Ming Tsai, Jonathan Waxman and Andrew Zimmern.

I really like most of the cheftestants, but I hope Antonia finally gets the win this time.

I love that Brooke and Maneet are going to be judges this time.

I don't know why we need Simon's new gig directly interviewing the judges rather than just including more of what they say while tasting the food, but I like him, so it works for me.

I wonder if the limitations of his old role will wind up being frustrating for Tiffani, who's used to judging and competing on various FN shows.

Oh wow, I noticed that Fabio Viviani will be competing. I was just wishing he would show up on TV somewhere as I haven't seen him in a long time.

I suppose he needs something to do after the restaurant he was associated with here in Orlando crashed and burned within a few months. I think it was promoted for longer than it was open 😐 .

From what I've read he owns and operates several restaurants so he's plenty busy outside of the TV world which might partially account for his absence from it.

Oh, I'm sure that's true. Fabio is still one of both my and Mrs. Dewelar's all-time favorite Top Chef contestants, and we were looking forward to the restaurant's opening given his association with it. We went a couple weeks after opening, and the place was nearly empty. The food was mediocre at best, on par with your standard mid-tier chain restaurant (e.g. Longhorn Steakhouse). I will say that the theming was really cool, and the staff was very attentive (perhaps a bit TOO attentive...), so it wasn't all negative. I guess we were just hoping for more.

Jet, bless his heart, is back!  My loyalties lie with him or Antonia to take it home this year.  I am sorry not to see Tiffany Derry competing -- she's one of my favorites.  Interesting that Brooke, Maneet, Tiffani, and Mei Lin have different roles.  I would have thought Mei Lin would be given a chance to defend her crown -- or monstrous belt, in this case.  No matter, I'm looking forward to the season.

I've read quite a bit about Fabio over the years and he seems to be one of the hardest working chefs in the business.  I doubt he needs something to do.  The only time I can remember seeing him compete after TC was on BBF (which he won) - which is not to say he hasn't competed, just that I'm not aware of it.   I hope he does well on ToC.

He competed on Chopped a few years before BBF, but those are his only post-TC competitions listed on IMDb.  So the last time he competed (at least on television) was in 2018.  It will be interesting to see if he's rusty.  He's funny, so I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

Tiffani is an excellent mentor when she's been on Beachside Brawl. I think a better role for on TOC would have been mentoring/coaching for the newbie TOCers or the chefs who come in through the qualifying rounds.

Rocco's competing, not judging. That should be fun.

No Shirley for obvious reasons, but I hope Guy gives viewers an update about her plus a couple of shoutouts.

Go Jet and Antonia!
