I noticed that as well, like sometimes they demanded first and last names of celebrities/historical figures, and other times, not.

With the people, I think it was a bit like Jeopardy when you answer Roosevelt or  Bush, you'll be asked to be more specific. It would have been nice if they could have had Rob play that role of asking for more information, rather than contestants flailing around with limited time, thinking they gave a wrong answer.

Really liked the show.  I knew fashion icons would come back to bite someone .

Question about strategy, remember the lady with dark hair that was on a streak…she always answered her questions very fast.  The other contestants just answered at a normal speed.  What is the best strategy?

Since the clock is running down, I would think answering fast gives you more of a time cushion if you run into difficult questions and have to pass.

Yeah, answering fast is certainly the key. There are no penalties for wrong answers, so go 'stream of thought' and hope you get the answer out in some verbal diarrhea if it doesn't come right away.

The other tactic would be to pass quickly. Don't fight for the answer on the tip of your tongue because you're bound to burn up more than 3 seconds trying to dredge it up. Basically for every question, allow yourself no more than 1 second of stream of thought babbling, then pass and eat the penalty. And if you have absolutely no clue, pass right away.

I loved this show last year so I was very happy to see it again.  I think Rob Lowe does a good job of keeping things moving and I especially like that there's very little shrieking and hugging and jumping up and down.  At the end of each competition, the winner gets a few words of congratulation and the loser gets a handshake and then quietly departs.  Then they move on.  I like that.

I felt so bad for the lady that got the wobbles before going onstage!  "I can't cry in front of Rob Lowe!!"  I hear you lady.  If I were on that show and The Randomizer stopped on my square, my answer to Rob Lowe's enthusiastic "What's your name?!??" would likely just be a whispered "so handsome"...or just a nonsense syllable.

I don't know how adding more players will change anything unless there are some other changes like letting players back in.

Adding players doesn't change anything.  It just expands possibilities and lengthens the game which is fine with me.  I don't want them to make any significant changes.  It seems like every time producers decide to "freshen up" a show, they ruin it.

This is exactly why I watch it.  The only other game show I've ever watched was his Samurai.  Games show make me crazy with everything you mentioned.  Oh and I can actually answer some of the questions :o)

Or the 'hoot' sound like Amy on The Big Bang Theory when she saw one of Penny's old boyfriends.

Is it my imagination or is there a lot more noise and excited carrying on by contestants this season?

I'm glad they started out with more people because the season should last longer - unless they start doubling up hours.

Because that's the sort of people most gameshows attract & look for after the first season & people know people are watching them. Jeopardy being the main exception & there are a few others but not many.

Something like WOF actively looks for excitable, outgoing & very loud contestants as do many more but it's not the worst there is, that would probably have to be TPIR & LMAD.

I've noticed it too. I don't know if they changed the way they cast the show, or just encouraged the contestants to be more animated on the set.

I've noticed when the randomizer is picking the next contestant, the camera will focus on the one that will be picked

Then it can't really be random.  I've said this before: the "randomizer" seems to pick the person that ratchets up the drama the most. If true, it wouldn't really be against game show laws because they aren't given the player any answers.

It's recorded tv not a live program so by the time it hits the airwaves of course they know who the randomizer chose & they then can edit it so the camera lands where it needs to, jeez. They probably use your everyday RNG to choose what number of square it lands on & go from there. Do people think these things are done live & everyone goes home every week & then comes back the following week to do it all live again? What is it with conspiracies everywhere?

Oh I'm not saying they're breaking gameshow laws or anything.  I'm just commenting that for the "viewer " or for me, it's a little disappointing that I know before who is picked.

This most recent episode makes me idly wonder, what if the “property” claimed on the floor starts to take the shape of something offensive? Say, a swastika?

Interesting thought.  I don't suppose it's likely but it's not impossible.  I don't know what they could do except pretend they don't notice, keep the cameras off it and do the next battle and change it as soon as possible.

Good Lord!  I never said there were conspiracies and I know it isn't live!  Fudge!  All I said was it would be nice if they didn't give away who is going to be picked!  Since it is taped, they have the chance to edit the tape!  Are you knew here or just in a grumpy mood?

Lol!  I was accused of starting conspiracies by a poster here.  So be prepared if they comment on your post!  You will know.

I didn't accuse you, it was a general comment on the way people think about tv shows sometimes & I put it where I did because of the comments about the show like how it can't be random which wasn't you either. If you think it was aimed at you then that's on you not me, not everything is about you, sorry. It wasn't even after your comment.

Don't take things so personally even if I was grumpy, you'll know if it's aimed at you as your comment will be within. Were you in a grumpy mood when you picked on me for no reason?

I wasn't even close to being in a grumpy mood.  I've been on this forum a long time and people don't always agree but they know how to word it in such a way that it doesn't seem like it's targeting an individual.  This forum is one of the few that everyone respects each other.  That's why I asked if you're new to this forum. So next time you feel grumpy don't post anything.  Wait awhile!

Nope, you don't get to tell when & what to post especially when nothing I said was in any way aimed at you. It's okay to admit you were wrong you know rather than make it about something else entirely.

I think that if someone has a time boost but doesn't use it, I would like to see an unused time boost go to the victor of the duel.

I hope the ending is not as anticlimactic as last year, when it turned out being 2 squares vs. 79 squares.  Would love to see two people with big swatches of territory duke it out in the end.

Hate how so many people go back to the floor after a single duel.

I think some of the pictures they use are odd and it makes it hard to guess the clue. They also seem to be reaching with some of the answers such as Doris Day for daytime television. She may have had something years and years ago but should not be in a category with Dr. Phil and Oprah. I looked it up and her show was in 1968, and all the others in the category had shows into the 2000’s at least.

Overall, I really like this show and I think Rob Lowe does a good job as host but it does seem to me like it's noisier this season with more typical quiz show behaviors by contestants.  I'd prefer an atmosphere more like Jeopardy.

I've always been good at trivia - or so I thought.  I'd be a disaster on this show.  It seems like many of the categories are some variety of popular culture, something I know little about.  And don't care about.  I wonder how much time they have between episodes.  Several people have mentioned cramming for a subject they inherited.

I couldn't agree more. Every episode since the new season started I have turned to Fiona & said "we don't need the usual game show shenanigans, it's not that type of show".

I'm new to the show and am trying to figure out why someone would choose to keep playing over going back to the floor if they want to win the entire show.  The fewer duels, the better.  The smaller your territory is, the fewer other categories you need to study.

I don’t claim to be an expert in Floor strategy, but I think there’s $$$ prize for the contestant with the most territory at the end of each episode, so I can see how that might tempt someone to stay on the floor and go for it. I guess if there was a category you felt good about and it could boost your territory, you might take that risk?

This show does raise some interesting strategy thinking.

You know what your category is.

You know the categories around it.

You also know what the whale categories are.

You know who has time boosts, who has won money.

You also know how many duels are per episode. (Usually 8, sometimes 9), so you know how many attempts there are to get the episode prize.

* At the end of the episode, you have a day to cram up on the categories around you. (Something that is much more obvious this season than last. Like the constellation guy saying "Surely they'll give us cute pictures, not just points in the sky... Nope!)

Strategically, whether I stay or go would depend on a variety of things:

* How well I know my category.

* How confident am I in winning the categories around me.

* Can I reach a whale and if I do, can I take their category?

Getting the Time boost is a goal, especially if you already have one in hand.

Getting the most territory probably isn't a goal early in an episode (first 4 duels) but should probably be a goal later on (later 2-3 duels)

If you have 2 duels in hand, you certainly should go for a time boost. Pick a strong category and grab it. Especially early in the episode.

Early in the season, you're better off not being noticed/picked. So winning a duel and dropping back with only 2-3 squares is a valid strategy.  Especially if you can snag a pair on the edge or in a corner. People will generally focus on going for the centre so you're less likely to be picked on the edge (and if you have more than 1 square you won't be picked by the Randomizer).

If you become a whale, stay up there long enough for a Time boost. It's basically a shield you'll want/need to discourage people from challenging you.

If you inherit a category you don't know and  you aren't a whale, stay on the offensive, at least until the end of the episode, so you can get cram time later. But try not to become a whale, otherwise you might be put on the spot before you can cram.

I'm sure there are other strategies; but that's my general thoughts on how I would play it out. A lot depends on the territory, when in the episode I'm active, and when in the season I'm active. So a lot of factors to consider and evaluate.

I don't think it can get any harder than that constellation category

It depends on what kinds of things you tend to know.  I got all but two of the constellations immediately and none of the movie stills and sports people.  Wait - I did get West Side Story at the very end of that category.  I know musicals but not movies in general.

If they ever go to sports logos again, they need to pull out stuff from defunct teams. Funny that the two guys nailed all thirty MLB teams, but then one of them fell apart when minor league logos were introduced. And I can't blame him. I probably would have been able to push things further (I swear, I recognized the logo for the Portland Sea Dogs, as well as the Durham Bulls and Toledo Mud Hens), but I don't think the average person could have done that.

I was a bit of an astronomy buff growing up, but I could never find the constellations in the sky, even when my eyes were better (despite growing up in hte country with almost pristine skys for skywatching).

I did recognize some of the star patterns, since there are two I readily recognize. Orion (Orion's belt) and the Big Dipper/Ursa Major.

If I try really hard I can find the Little Dipper/Ursa Minor.

Beyond that, I'd be lost.

That said, you would probably be good if you just started rattling off the signs of the Zodiac as guesses. Libra was pretty obvious to me I think. But yeah, beyond that I'd be lost.

I would have been right there with the poor woman who bombed out on pop singers.

Me too!  I didn't even recognize the names when I saw them.  Never heard of any of them.  I would have picked any other category.

I felt sort of sorry for the Greek guy who kept drawing blanks.  I can see myself doing that under pressure.
