After having a successful law career in her youth, the uber-intelligent Madeline  “Matty” Matlockreturns to the workforce at a prestigious law firm where her silent-but-deadly demeanor and quick-witted tactics win cases and take down criminals. Matty endeavors to establish herself in her new high-stakes world as she works alongside the firm’s younger associates.

Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, a senior attorney with a thirst for justice, Matlock's boss, she is laser-focused and hard to impress, she is now in charge of three junior associates.

Jason Ritter as Julian, Olympia’s attorney ex-husband and son of the head of the firm, he comes from a life of privilege and has trouble balancing his work with his personal life.

David Del Rio as Billy Martinez, a charismatic young associate who is willing to help Matty succeed, he seems to know way more than he should about the firm.

Leah Lewis as Sarah Yang, an ambitious young associate, she sees Matty as an obstacle in her path to success.

 I have no idea why they're calling this Matlock.   It bears no resemblance to the original Matlock.   The original was set in the South with the lead character being a super successful sought-out lawyer who ran his own firm while being old and curmudgeonly.   This show is set in NYC with the main character having to fight for recognition in a world populated with young hot shot lawyers while being old and bawdy.   Other than the leads both being older and attorneys there's no similarity whatsoever. 

 This is like that Murder, She Wrote reboot they were going to do a few years ago with Octavia Spencer as a nurse who works in a hospital and solves crimes.   Yeah, that says Murder, She Wrote to me.  Thankfully that one didn't go far, probably in part because Angela Lansbury said it didn't really make sense to call it MSW.

Kathy Bates may look a lot younger than I do, but at 75, she's 5 years older, so, like me, upon getting this news, she too is likely thinking something like:
Fall 2024 or even Spring 2025?  If I should live that long. Hrmph.

Kathy Bates and Beau Bridges — two great talents.  Oh, I hope they do this show right.  In the previews, she refers to “that show Matlock” so I’m curious what the premise is — she’s a lawyer who’s older and wise, but wonder why they’re naming it Matlock?  I had thought it was a 2024 remake of the old Andy Griffith series with a female in the lead instead, but sounds like maybe not?

I think it is just that (a Matlock remake) while perhaps planning to break the fourth wall on occasion for purposes of humor?

The show will have an sneak peek early showing on September 22 at 8pm ET, then it will return in its regular timeslot on Thursday, October 17 at 9pm ET (the first episode will be repeated the week before). They seem to be repeating what's been done for a few other shows, like Abbott Elementary when that first premiered

I had no idea this show exists until I kept seeing promos for it during football.  I was never into the original, and I tend to lose interest in legal shows because I just get distracted by all the inaccuracies (I'm a lawyer), but between Kathy Bates and this exploring how an old woman uses the way she's rendered invisible as a weapon, I'll have to give it a shot.

Calling this show "Matlock" -- hmmm.  My first thought was here's another example of lack of imagination on the part of Hollywood suits.  I enjoyed Andy Griffith's Matlock, but did not want to see it rebooted, even though I'll watch Kathy Bates in anything she chooses to do.  Then I saw a promo when Maddy introduces herself as Madeline Matlock, "just like the TV show" and thought, OK, that works.  Calling it "Matlock" is slick marketing, lots of press and online commentary.   Would I have watched it with a different name?  Absolutely,

RE the “Matlock” name, and how often they play with it (and other lawyer show names): I suspect TPTB’s intention was for it to be treated like an inside joke, and for the audience to feel like they were in on the joke.

Not a bad way to build brand loyalty, when you think about it.

I think you’re right.
But then then they went for the secret reveal at the end of the Pilot which meant they had to scrub a lot of the inside joke stuff from the ad campaign leading up to the premier.

As a matter of fact, yes! It appears this has now leaked onto the actress’ IMDb page (sigh), but Marnee Carpenter (of CBS’ Clarice, and who more recently guested on an April NCIS) is set to play Matty’s dearly departed daughter Ellie, via flashbacks in at least one episode.

Yes!  She was 100% positive she hadn't thanked her mom and has lived with that for decades.  That's what I call a life-changer.  Props to Ben for doing such a kind deed.

“We don’t necessarily talk about Sarah’s journey into how she found out that she was gay. We kind of catch her in the middle where she’s been gay for a while. Or she’s come out as gay for a while,” Lewis teased in September. “It’s a known thing and it’s not something that we lead with at the forefront of her personality, even though it very much is the fabric of her being.”

She continued: “For Sarah, it’s not that she is nervous about her sexuality at all. But I think her as a person, she doesn’t really have time for women [when she meets Kira].”

Huh.  Did we know she's a lesbian? I don't remember that from the pilot. Have we even met Kira?

Other than "Matty" being long-time married to a man and Olympia being divorced from one man and dating another, we in the introductory episode didn't get insight into the sexual orientation of any of the characters; of course those two representations can be less straightforward (pardon the pun) than they seem, so there's room for a twist, but we can thus far take them at face value, and everyone else is left wide open.

It’s definitely pretty early for a renewal for a broadcast show so it suggests CBS is pretty happy with the show and the ratings
