Thanks everyone for weighing in. I'll continue washing them in the machine and let hubby huff and puff. 😉

Not me.  I'd definitely let him wash them outside with a hose.

I don't see how that would work in the cold of winter.

Not your concern.  I see two possibilities:  He likes washing them outside with a hose, or he tries it and realizes what a dumb idea it was.  Either way, you win.

Lol, or split the difference and buy hoseable outdoor doormats to use as bath mats.

Okay, just kidding (mostly).  Probably not the most comfortable thing to step out of the shower onto.

Just hosing them off doesn't really get them clean clean.  He'll need to take some soap and a washboard out, too.  And how is he going to go about getting them dry enough to put back on the floor?  Hanging them to dry is great, but after being hosed down, they'll be dripping wet, unlike when they come out of the washer and have gone through a spin cycle.

So many flaws in the "hose them down outside" scheme.

I wash mine in the washer and dry them in the dryer -- briefly and on low heat so the plastic backing (if any, one mat I have doesn't have a backing) won't get icky.

I might have probed a little further, as in: "Is it a particular style of play you are calling "European"? (Because Luka, for example, does play significantly differently than Giannis....but part of that is a difference in sheer size.) It really doesn't sound like racism on the surface, because if you were truly racist IMO you probably won't like watching the NBA at all. (I specialize in trying to give other people the benefit of the doubt...)

Actually, there are people out there who call any Black person "African American," for example, regardless of whether they're actually from the US or not.  As in Rege-Jean Page is "African American."  Nope, he's British.

I use the hotel style heavy toweling/terry cloth bathmats so they easily wash with the towels.  I wash them every one to four weeks depending on which bathroom they're in and the usage.  I usually throw them in the dryer for a bit and then air dry the rest of the way.  I pull them out so the towels will fully dry faster.

It's a struggle isn't it?  In July or thereabouts, I bribed granddaughter into going through all her clothes.  She found she enjoyed having easier access to her favorite pieces.  I'll try to engage her again in the spring.  My daughter despises the task and I did it for her until COVID limited visiting.  I started picking it up again last year and getting the kids involved.  I haven't found anything that works well to get grandson going on it.  Telling granddaughter I can't buy her new clothes until we see what she needs is fairly effective.

True!  I follow a New Orleans jazz group that has a washboard player.  Their name is Tuba Skinny.

Here's a favorite.  I dare anyone not to get up and dance.

Good for you! If you don't mind me asking, why doesn't he like them being washed in the machine? Is it for sanitary reasons? Because I don't think he has anything to worry about there. If I have something particularly dirty to wash I use a laundry sanitizer by Lysol that goes in the machine with it and I figure that should be enough. And I've been known to put things through twice if I think they really need it.

Maybe ask him take off his shoes in the house if he tracks in grime? I've lost that war with my husband but at least he wipes his feet before he comes in and only walks around a little bit before putting on his slippers. I have these great scraping mats in the mud room between the garage and the kitchen to minimize tracked-in dirt. They make a big difference.

As to how often I wash bath mats - I have a bunch of them that I rotate for two bathrooms so maybe once every 3 months. I get them cheap at Ocean State Job Lot, LOL, so I don't feel bad tossing them after a while. I keep them aside and wash them all together in one load and let them air dry. I use the rubber backed ones because I find the non-rubber too slippery.

@EtheltoTillie, thanks for that link, I love the heck out of that music!

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around an adult insisting on traipsing in and out of the house with dirty shoes all day long, and then when someone cleans up after him, having the impudence to complain about how she does so.

This is one of the 347 reasons I am not married -- and thus not in prison, because that bath mat would be what I used to smother him in his sleep.

Ah, thanks for that, I somehow missed that. I guess I don't have that problem because I wash a few of them at the same time.

I have an old Maytag washer that's a workhorse and I'm actually afraid to get a new one because I've heard mixed reviews on the newer washers. One of these days I'm going to have to get over that and take the advice of Consumer Reports or something like that.

I bought my washer and dryer in 1990, and they both still work great!  There are a few features I wouldn't mind having that mine don't have, but I have a really hard time replacing things that work.  I currently need a new iPad because my old one won't update to the latest iOS, and so my apps won't update, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with the iPad!  I hate planned obsolescence like that.

I hate it too.  I recently had to replace a still functioning printer.  I have a friend who I still can't get to understand planned obsolescence even thought it's been three devices now.  Her husband got it with the second one.  These are more art or craft type people not techies.  She is indeed a professional award winning artist which I admire.  Now he says things to her like just believe "Adelaide" and go get the new one.  It's just like your iphone 5, the tablet, etc.  You can't ever get it to work right again.

I used to call it keep or ditch with my daughters. I texted my granddaughter the other day. She wrote, “Your daughter is making me do keep or ditch.”. Then she asked, “Is it true you used to tell her you considered her room 75% clean if her bed was made?”. Indeed it was, fun times!

I may have beat the system-I parked in a parking lot, prepaid at the kiosk, took the receipt and left the lot. I didn’t read the receipt and didn’t see that I was supposed to put it on the dash. I thought I would put it in a machine when I left that would let me out of the lot. Of course there was a ticket on the car when I returned for not displaying the receipt. I read the ticket to see what I needed to do and saw that there was no VIN filled in and the plate number they used is the word on a novelty plate that is on the front of my car that resembles our old plate design. The actual plate number is the back plate, which is all our state has. The state I was in has both front and back plates. So am I correct in thinking I can not pay the fine? I DID pay to park, so I’m not trying to get out of that….

I think my granddaughter is going to call it Yeet Day.  In honor of getting the old clothes out I let her yell yeet and fling the outgoing in my general direction to grab.  Normally she wouldn't be allowed to do that, but it added some fun to the activity and I'm willing to accept it to get the job done.

I used to think that, but now believe that racists will make an exception if the Black person's job is providing entertainment to them.

Look no further than the reaction to Caitlin Clark - it's like the racists are trying hard to make her their patron saint.  To her credit she doesn't seem to be buying into their nonsense.

I’d say not exactly beat the system, but at least karma came out even for you that day. In your shoes, no way I would pay the ticket. But I would put that receipt in a safe place, just in case…

It's also of note that both Wemby and Giannis played for their respective countries (France and Greece) in the last Olympics. They're as European as Jokic or Luka. Period.

My mother taught us to iron with pillowcases, followed by sheets.  This was before polyester & we didn't have a dryer, so they did get wrinkled in the wash & even hanging on the line in the wind didn't make them completely smooth.  But of course we all asked why it was necessary to iron something that no one else would see & would inevitably become wrinkled with use -- kids are basically logical & mothers always end up retorting "Because I said so!".

We didn't have to take our own bags to the grocery store, so no ironing there.  But let me be the first to point out that your sister must be nuts (or very bored)....

I just read on one of those click-bait articles on how to get a better night's sleep that smooth sheets actually help you sleep better. It even recommended those gadgets that pull a fitted sheet until it's tight. If it wasn't such a pain in the neck to put them on, I'd do it. I can see the logic in it but I think my sheets are fine without them.

Fresh sheets do pretty much guarantee a better night's sleep for me.
I've never ironed them.

Mid-summers in the high mountain desert when I was married and had 2-3 kids, I would hang sheets on the clothesline outside. By the time I got the last set of sheets hung, the first set was dry and looked like they'd been ironed. It was in the 90s F with humidity in the single digits.
Money was so tight then that I used a razor on the sheets to shave off the pills.

I've never lived in a place conducive to hanging laundry outside.  But what a great thing about the desert air.  My experience with this is going into a swimming pool in Las Vegas and finding that my swimsuit dried just about instantly when I got out of the water.

I remember when I was very little my mother hanging laundry on our fire escape clothesline in the Bronx. At that time we lived on the top floor of a 5 story building on the corner next to a park. Everything came out very fresh and soft. After that my parents never lived anywhere we could do that again and I never attempted it as an adult either. So that was that.

My aunt who lived in the Bronx when I was a kid did this too.  The clothesline stretched across the back courtyard to another building.  It had a pulley system to reel in the clothing.

I still remember the "squeak" sound the pulleys made when the lines were being tugged by my mother and other tenants. And I remember being given wooden clothespins to play with, which I loved. My husband and I joke about how back then we were given all sorts of non-toy stuff to play with - wooden boards with hammers and nails, empty cardboard boxes, you name it. The rest was our imagination. And somehow I never hurt myself with the hammers and nails. Although My mother didn't give me that to play with, it was my grandma who did that, LOL.

One of our favorite toys was the giant cardboard box the freezer came in.  We made that into so many things!  I think we played with it for weeks, until it finally fell apart.

In another thread the topic of anti-vaxxers came up and I wondered if this is a phenomenon that is significantly over represented in people under a certain age.  The reason I wonder is my 89 yr old father got his Covid shot last week and went today for his flu shot and  it is the rare 'senior' that I know personally or know of who hasn't gotten these shots.

No stats to back me up, just theorizing, but I wonder if people below a certain age just have no clue what the world was like before vaccines.  If that's the case they need to crack open a history book - and then be grateful  most of the stories about polio epidemics and the like are in history books.  Although given the way things are going they won't be history for much longer.

Younger people don't care about history and a lot of history has been erased/cancelled in favour of reconciliation.  I don't understand how this can't go hand-in-had with each other.  But I digress.....I just booked my Covid shot - Ontario only just opened registration up for us normal non-seniors.  I need to book my son's too.
