I went to bed at ten thinking it was a slam dunk that Cara was guilty and going to prison for manslaughter if not murder.  Guess not.  I saw a clip on the site saying that women in a mock jury all thought she was guilty because of her lack of emotion in the early moments. So did they get an all male jury who fell for the whiney little voice or what?  I haven't been this shocked since the minister's wife in Selmer Tennessee got away with shooting her husband in the back while he slept -- she had a mousey voice, too, come to think of it.

I guess any woman, at any time, can pull out a gun and shoot her husband and say later that she was afraid of him. "I heard someone come in and I didn't think it was my husband because he wasn't due for ten minutes yet, plus I saw something blue and I thought I'd seen his blue shirt in the laundry, so I shot him."

Cara also did a lot of blaming the victim with "He told me that if anyone ever came in unannounced, I should squeeze my eyes shut and shoot."  She was just being an obedient little wifey doing what her husband told her to do.

This one did make me angry because I just thought Cara thought so highly of herself. She was so desirable.  She reminded me of someone I knew.  It is Florida after all. Sorry. I can't help it. It was the prosecution's case to lose.

Not only the outfit but when Dennis interviewed the daughter she talked about how her dad would always call her at night to tell her he was okay and Dennis said "even now? You got a call last night from him?" And she said yes. During the show it played as if he was saying even now that your an adult not even now that he is in prison.

I hope the daughter has some peace but it's awful that she basically has no one. I wonder how she gets along with her stepsister and half brother and what they think about their mom and his guilt.

I know! I didn't pick up on anything weird about that call, just that he's a dad who still wants to check on his little girl when she's all grown up.

Dateline fooled me.  I didn't suspect the ex-husband until the daughter was interviewed and blew his statement of being home when his ex-MIL and her friend were murdered.

I came to really dislike Rosemary.....she could have told the truth after Linda's murder and saved two lives.  What a liar she was.

Weird that the killer can call his daughter every night at bedtime from prison.

I feel sorry for the daughter, but she came across as completely cold and without emotion.

I can't blame the killer's second wife for not coming forward. Having been in an abusive relationship, I understand what it is to be forced to live a lie and try to protect a family. It's easy for those who have gone through life happy and carefree to point fingers, but I give her credit for finally coming forward and, frankly, putting herself in danger. The two deaths caused by her silence I am sure haunt her every day, and will until the end of time. But the fact is, everything that happened is on her (ex) husband, now serving life in prison. ALL blame is on him. And yeah, it take a long time to DNA bones found in the desert, so many illegals die during their journey. And I imagine her body/bones were eaten by coyotes. Real ones, not the ones who lead illegals north.

I did love how the prosecutor, after the mistrial, read the transcript and decided how to change his strategy.  Good job.

I never felt like Rosemary was in an abusive marriage.  She just agreed to be blind to the truth.

My heart broke for Renae's daughter when she said her mom was forgotten in the trial.

So I started with, husband is guilty (because really, at this rate, that is always the presumption I go with until I'm given reasonable doubt). But then I thought the boyfriend was the likelier suspect. Fell asleep, only to wake up to the kid talking about how dad was not home when he'd said he had been in the restroom. I think he is as guilty as sin. I feel sorry for the daughter, she is hanging on for dear life to the belief her father did not kill her mother and grandmother, and that poor neighbor.

I also wondered if the second wife began to confess for fear of being next rather than an actual sense of justice. I wonder if she felt vulnerable once the first jury was hung, because, there she was, having testified against him and he was free as a bird. Not a good situation to be in, though he would have been a fool to do something to her as well.

Was I the only one who had a negative reaction to that darn horseshoe mustache he sported all throughout? So ugly. I had this irrational impulse to reach across the screen and swipe it off his face. Just me? Ok then.

Good point about the second wife.  Self-preservation vs. the true road to justice.  She let the coverup go just to save her happy little new marriage and then went on to legally adopt Jordynne.  The sudden change of heart was probably a result of panic:  What if he gets off the second time around?

I agree with the ridiculous mustache!  He should have grown a beard or goatee to hide that fugly chin of his!

She has no relatives in her life from what was shown nor did they say what she was doing--going to school or working? I don't wonder if she wants to protect her anonymity and I hope she has people in her life who care for her.

I just hafta say it; TOO MANY FREAKING COMMERCIALS--sometimes they were only five minutes apart. I was able to watch a 120minute show in less than an hour and 20 minutes.

I was surprised to hear that his mother was ready to testify on the ex-wife's behalf at the custody hearing.  It's not too often that a Mom goes against her own son ...

So bizarre - the mother was ready to testify for her former daughter in law. The ex boyfriend of the same woman was ready to testify for the ex husband.

Part way through the episode when they showed the letter that Marilyn had written saying that if anything happened to her, to look at her ex son in law, she started the letter by saying that she and David's mother had both won visitation rights with their granddaughter. I wondered at that time why David's mother had to sue to see her son's daughter. It wasn't until the end of the show that they revealed that she was going to testify for her ex daughter in law in the custody case. Since I don't imagine David thought his own mother would flee the state with his daughter, he obviously was trying to punish her by keeping Jordynn from her. He certainly wasn't too concerned about the best interests of his daughter since he wanted to keep both grandmothers away from her. But then he also killed her mother so I shouldn't be surprised that the best interests of his daughter were not foremost in his mind.

Like you Walnutqueen, I was not at all fooled by the ex wearing a shirt during the interview. Normally when they interview they show much more of the person, and often when it is just Josh and the person being interviewed they will shoot some of the footage from the side to include them both. Also David was shown very close up with no variation at all during his whole interview. It looked very suspicious to me.

It was nice to see Dateline do a local case, but I missed the suspense because I already knew the outcome. What I didn't understand was why it took so long to identify the wife's skull.

During the airing of the episode, our local NBC affiliate aired a teaser about the convicted fire chief. Anyone who didn't know the outcome would've been spoiled. I guess they figured if you live in Tucson you know how it ended.

ETA one of my girlfriend's friends was on the first jury and was one of the two who voted for convicting.  She was really upset that it ended up a hung jury because she thought itwas obvious he did it.

I saw a PBS show about illegals who die in the desert trying to cross to a "better life" in America. The morgues have bodies upon bodies, some pretty preserved by the hot, dry air, some just bones and/or fragments of clothing. Bodies are stored in multiple refrigerated cargo bins, like the kind hauled by semi trucks. They have pages and pages of names of missing people. They work to identify each body and link it to a name so relatives can be informed that yes, their loved one is dead. This skull got put in line behind hundreds if not thousands of other "parts" waiting for DNA to be identified. It's amazing it got tested and a match made at all.

I just watched the Laci Peterson update, and I have to say that it changed my opinion of Amber Frye.  Back when the crime happened, Amber was portrayed as having this long-standing relationship with Scott, but she was only with him for two months before Laci was killed.  I totally believe that Amber was duped.  She played no role in what happened to Laci and helped the cops.

Also, I really don't have a problem if she wrote a book and did a few interviews where she was paid.  The key for me is that she wasn't active in what happened to Laci and she didn't know about it in advance and stay silent.  She did do the right thing, and her association with Scott probably cost her in ways that we don't know.  In my mind, writing a book and doing interviews helped Amber to recoup some of the costs that she probably would have earned if she had never met Scott.

Now, I'd have a problem with Scott profiting from what he did.  That ex-journalist is delusional.  Scott totally did it.  The theory that some area sex offenders or thieves just decided to kill a pregnant woman makes no earthly sense.

I hate commercials and always flip, which does allot me to watch multiple shows at once, if the commercial break line up correctly. But I'm a PBS viewer first, just because of the commercial thing. That, plus I tend to fall asleep during 10-minute commercial breaks if I don't start flipping. Dateline also repeats a lot after the breaks, just in case we missed them saying something the first five times.

While I don't think the second wife of the fireman was necessarily in an abusive relationship...I sort of understand why she lied for him. The first time, I figure she wanted to protect her family and keep it intact...and was pretty much in denial anyway.  The second time:  I think it dawned on her that he was a dangerous man if he could kill multiple times with no apparent remorse. She washed the clothes and lied for him partly because she had no idea what he would do if she refused.  She did go to the police, once divorced, and admit what she had done.   She has to live with the fact that she might have prevented the second murders.  On the other hand, if he had not been charged with his first wife's murder for lack of real evidence, he stilll might have killed his mother-in-law, etc.

If JJ was done with her and had moved on with his new girlfriend, why did he go to Cara's house that night?

From what I remember, the girlfriend also said that JJ was supposed to come over to her place that night, but she was recovering from surgery and told him not to come as she wanted to rest/sleep. So she felt guilty as had she told him to come over he would not have gone to Cara's and ended up dead. It did make me wonder if there was something more though to the girlfriend's story. According to her they were in love, and he was so happy to be out from under Cara's control. I wonder if they actually had a fight and that is why he went over? Otherwise why would a happy and in love guy go over for a roll in the hay with the woman he was supposedly happy to get away from? I know some men only think with their little head, but that seems like pretty crass treatment of the woman you profess to love.

It's documented that she sent the sext to JJ after the first guy she sent it to didn't respond, but is there proof that that is all she sent?  Could Cara have sent some other text with a different message and then deleted it?  Since she had access to JJ's dead body, she could have erased both texts from her cell phone and his cell phone, if he had his cell phone on him.  Also, she could have just called and deleted those phone call entries and no one would know what she actually said to him to get him to come over.

Me too...and scarily enough, if Dave had not killed Marilyn and Renee, I honestly think I would have acquitted him even if Linda's skull had been found.  If I were on the jury and he was just accused of killing Linda, I would have thought that it was reasonable to assume that a woman who had a known drinking problem, who had lost her job and possibly custody of her child because of that problem could have met an unsavory person at the bar and met her end because of that choice.  However, for your ex-mother-in-law and her neighbor to end up dead as well is just wayyyyyyyy too coincidental to be random...particularly since it came on the heels of Dave recently losing in court.

I didn't know this case so it was nice to hear a new one.  I suspected the husband Dave was guilty.  I thought the background with the sheet of plywood below the plant looked odd.  They did try to trick us with the orange pants but normal shirt.

I was freaked by all the bad moustaches in this episode.  Dave's was annoying but there were other men with the same creepy 'stache.  I guess it is the style in that area.

We were laughing every time they showed that same photo of JR.  I kept thinking that surely they could have found one more photo of him without the shades and cigarette.  I was surprised when we actually saw him in court.

I guess I can understand the wife giving Dave the alibi the first time.  She wanted to believe he was outside walking around.  She truly believed he would never kill anyone at that time.  But the second time she had to know.  That was probably the moment she really realized what danger she was in married to him.

He had his wife lie for him again. After they divorced she went to the police and said she had lied about him being home both times.

Honestly, though, the coincidence would have done more for me than Rosemary's testimony.  Spouses cover the ass of their significant other all the time.  Yeah, I know coincidence is not evidence, but this one was too strong not to be considered.  The same family?  In the same house. and yet it is not at all linked to Linda's death?  Riiiiiiiiiight.  Dave's arrogance was his downfall moreso than Rosemary.  I don't mean to sound flip about murder, but why wouldn't he attempt to harm Marilyn at a location OTHER than her house if he didn't want the cases to be linked so quickly?

One thing about the wife that really bothered me was when she acknowledged that she had always known he killed Linda and that she knew she was lying for him was how staunchly she fought alongside her husband in trying to deny Marilyn visitation and a relationship with her granddaughter. It was more than just standing by her husband she was picketing the court and giving media interviews about how the ruling was a travesty. Like you were already party to causing her so much pain with her never knowing for sure if her daughter was alive or dead and to double down and try to deny her access to the only part of her daughter that was still alive is awful. I mean obviously he is 100% to blame for the murders but I hope is haunted by her choices.

I think Prince Charles is a colossal turd.  Thanks to the Crown (which I highly recommend to whomever hasn't seen it), Prince Philip seems more like an example of duty and caring than Prince Chuckster.  Diana did have her issues, to be sure, but she was young AND she went into the marriage believing that Charles loved her.  Charles went into the marriage because he wanted to be King AND he also wanted a married woman.  He was involved with Camilla before he married Diana, and he picked right up again after he got married.  I don't know if this is still true, but I thought that at one time, it was decided that Camilla would not be addressed as Queen.  I hope that's still true, and if it were up to me, I'd skip right over Chuckster and go straight to William.

Anne was athletic, and I think was his favorite; don't know how the younger boys fared.
Charles would not be my ideal king, but his father is no gem.
Diana should have known what she was in for; surely he family knew.
And again, if they'd let Charles marry Camilla when they were young and in love, none of the drama need have happened.

I have read several books on the modern British royal family, so I'm sorry that I can't recall which one that this is from...probably one by Katie Nicholl, but I believe that before Charles married Diana, Queen Elizabeth did give him the opportunity to choose Camilla.  He could have her and abdicate the throne like his uncle had or he could have the Crown.  He could not have both.  He told his mother that he wanted the Crown.

Now, I don't approve of some of the decisions that Diana made later in the marriage and later in life, but she was 19 and naive.  Charles was just a greedy pig who wanted EVERYTHING...the woman and the Crown.  Suck it up, Chuckster, life ain't fair.  I think it's utterly delicious that he's had to wait this long.  Serves him right.

I watched last night's show later, so I could skip commercials. It makes a 2-hour episode more tolerable.

This jerk says he's not the violent type, then starts yelling "fuck you" at everyone in the room at the end. He has no idea that he's a monster, and I hope his appeal fails so he can't influence his son. I hope his wife is happy. She encouraged him to get rid of Nicole, hope she can live with herself.

If not for that old man he enlisted to help him move her SUV, he might have gotten away with it. That, and the three guys he tried to enlist to post from her Facebook page. Why get a whole town involved in your crime if you don't want to get caught? It took me the entire episode to figure out he reminded me of Randy Quaid.

I figured it was him as soon as he said he cut off her cell phone service.  If he really still had any care for her, he would have cut it off when she got home, as that drive was pretty desolate.  Pad locking her house and stealing the safe pretty much said he didn't give a shit about her or her kids anymore.  Why on earth he tried three guys to post on her FB page still boggles the mind.  The cell phone evidence was specific enough to be the final nail.

The biggest unanswered bits of weirdness for me were (a) why were there guinea pigs in her truck and (b) what happened to them?  I get that she was thinking of moving out there to be with the murderer, but since her kids were still with their dad, why not leave the guinea pigs behind with the kids until the move was finalized?

Another one of Hupp's crimes that should fit the "outrageously wanton and vile," definition would be pushing her mother off that balcony.  I don't think they have enough proof on that one though.

I care more about the guinea pigs than any murder victim, so call me callous.

Josh M's sanguine expression in the face of those "fuck you's" was my everything!!!

I'm with you Walnutqueen as long as I don't have to look at any pictures of abused animals. Too heartbreaking. I still want to go to Pam Hupp's trial. It's not that far from me.

You can keep your eyes & ears closed throughout our criminal caper, my dear.  Just smuggle a recording of Pam Hupp's trial to us (or take copious notes).

The trial is set for October? It's about 3 hours from me and I am going to do everything I can to go. Of course I will report back!

3 hours?  We need to set you up with a gofundme fund for gas money or motel rooms, because just thinking about that commute nearly kills me!
