The battle between the teams continues when Mike misses a call; Jess experiments with a dessert she's never made before; communication issues cause problems on deck for Lewis just as his new deckhand arrives; Faye sets her sights on the new guy.

I didn’t see the chef “bake” the meringue on her Baked Alaska.  They piped the meringue onto the cake and ice cream, she only used the torch to brown it up.  It should have gone in the oven.

I’m not sure why but I cannot stand the chief stew.  The scenery was beautiful in tonight’s episode.

Like an overdramatic deckhand whose ankle isn’t even swollen, these comments are in the order of the episode broadcast.

Jess – if you don’t want your dessert to be an “epic fail”, why are you trying to serve something you’ve never made before?  Perhaps making a batch or two prior would solve that little problem?  And by the way, for someone who got very dramatic after a hand burn, you sure like to set things on fire.

So there’s no coordination between interior and the deck crew when dessert is served?  Seems like a Chief Stew who knew what she was doing would have accounted for that ahead of time.

Chav Faye is bitching at Lewis because she demanded help and the deck crew pointed out they had a timetable.  What?  Yeah, the deck crew can help when they’re available, but don’t be surprised if the deck crew has priority for the deck crew – especially when they are down *two* at the moment.  Come on, Chav Faye, when does the deck crew call upon the interior to help docking?

Kasie (regarding Seth, the new deckhand) – “That purple shirt just throws me off way too much.”  Have to agree.  (:

Chav Faye wastes no time throwing the deck crew under the bus – boat – when chatting with the new guy.  Foment disharmony much?

The whole boys-in-the-hot-tub, girls-in-the-beds and then mass cuddling – weird.  It was like Bravo was writing a script but then stopped mid-page and no one knew what to do.

What will happen next week?  Will Seth take over the deck crew?  Will Chav Faye get her work done without blaming the deck crew?  Will Jess light something else on fire?  Stay tuned….

The way she made it just seemed wrong to me, especially pouring on-fire rum/whiskey on it. So I looked up some recipes.

She put the meringue on right before serving! It's supposed to be frozen for 3 hours after the meringue is added. No wonder it was melting!

Then you can bake it, or (as recommended) use a blow torch to brown it. But the whole thing is supposed to be solidly frozen before that. Did the chef bother to look up any recipes? Damn.

I noticed on a cooking competition show recently, they used blow torches on a Baked Alaska type dessert. Back in the olden days, when we carved on stone tablets..... our only choice was broiler in the oven and hope that the ice cream didn't melt. That was most of the challenge in making a Baked Alaska. I remember my group in Home-EC class made one. It came out pretty good for a bunch of 14 year olds.

There are a ton of recipes that just use a blowtorch rather than actually baking it in an oven. Even on the holiday baking show or whatever it's called nobody put theirs in an oven. Though there are apparently 3 different types of meringue and 1 guy used the wrong type which was all news to me, not to my wife who just shook her head at me.

I get the whole teamwork idea when it comes to the guest experience but fault both Faye & Lewis for the issue. The deck crew should be willing to run plates during dinner service. I think the issue is that they are short staffed AND dinner service has been much later than normal due to the sunset timing (speaking off, how did it go from 10 something one day to 9:30 the next)?

However, expecting the deck crew to have one person in the galley all evening washing dishes or to wake up in the middle of their mandatory rest just to don a costume when there's another person available seems a bit much.  All of this could be resolved with a proper conversation between the department heads.

Seth seems way over qualified for this role. I predict Lewis is going to quickly be replaced.

The scenery is utterly majestic. While I abhor the idea of cold weather cruising, I definitely now have Norway on my bucket list.

The fight between the deck crew and interior feels fake, or at the very least egged on by production. I dislike Lewis so much that I instinctively want to side with Faye, but then I also really dislike Faye now. They all kind of suck.

Yep. Is it Seth or Zeth? I swear I saw it both ways. In any case, he seems more experienced than Lewis, so I predict Lewis will be fired at some point and replaced by Seth/Zeth. Which would be weird, since Lewis isn't altogether incompetent, relative to past crew members. But we're already hearing grumblings about him from various people.

OMG, that was so unprofessional. It wasn't just the deck crew, it was Lewis in particular. It'd be one thing if Kasie or Oriana had said that to him, but for a department head to say that to a new deckie was beyond the pale.

I'm getting really tired of the melodrama over docking. There's always a lot of yelling and hand-wringing and swearing and then we cut to a commercial and when we come back nothing really happened. I'm not falling for it anymore, show.

Faye is horrible as a chief stew.  Not all about you.  You shouldn't have sent your 3rd stew down when you knew you had dessert.  The deck crew is not your crew.  They are down one and another temporarily.  You don't get to take him to use.  Maybe you should move your behind a bit faster and work.  It's not Mike that is useless there chief stew it's you.

Nathan's injury was so weird. I thought he fell on the last few steps but he fell higher?  There was no swelling at any time but you never know but I am reminded of Kyle.....  At least Nathan stayed and worked.

Good grief still on the second stew drama?  Honestly you are not second stew material and shouldn't be given that title anyways.

Next season this show needs an overhaul.  Get rid of everyone except the captain.  None of these people are worth a second season so far.

I had the EXACT SAME experience as you, Lurk.  We made Baked Alaska in the ovens in Home-Ec.  It really pissed me off because we had to invite the damn boys in shop class to eat it.  Talk about reinforcing gender roles, but it was the 70s.  I remember thinking, at that young age, that it wasn't fair.  The girls did the baking for the boys, but we got to eat is as well.

Oh Snarts, I can only hope you are right.  I've made no secret about my HATRED for useless Lewis on these boards.

So they're definitely casting single people who are down for hooking up.

First thing the women talked about the new guy was his looks and height, not his experience, how he might help alleviate the work load they have.

Seth has already ranked the women, decided he's most interested in Faye.

They had him arrive just in time to go out with the crew but they went to some laid-back place, no bars and when they came back, the women decided to skip the hot tub.  The producers maybe wanted the different groups to talk about each other?  Yet for some reason, they have a couple of the guys in their shorts go into that room where the women were, so they could check out the new guy's body.

Kerry was losing it because of the shitty radios during docking.  I stayed in Alesund once, didn't see big yachts.  But I knew that was a big cruise ship port because a lot of the tours and restaurants based their hours on cruise ship schedules, like when they docked, a lot of these operators were ready to offer tours of the city on buses at those times.

But it looks like they choose to dock this yacht near town, in relatively shallow waters, compared to docking outside of town more, where they have space for cruise ships.  I don't know if that's an option for them.  It certainly looks more scenic to be docked with all those buildings in the background.

Faye said she was going to pay the bill so they could leave.  Well in Norway, meals are very expensive.  So it'd be surprising if she's picking up the check for everyone.  It would eat up most of her tip.  My guess is production pays because they arrange with the restaurants to set up space and lighting for the film crew.

Here are some of the things i made in Home Ec c. 1974 (we swapped out with the boys, trading Home Ec for shop, for one month and I made a huge cutting board, LOL):

Baked Alaska
Green Goddess dressing
Home-made mayonnaise

The only one I have made since was Baked Alaska...right after we did it in Home Ec so I could show my fam I knew how.

I had to wait and wait for the chyron to see that it was Seth and not Zeth.

I'd take the hot tub on my own with a glass of a preferred beverage, as did Kelly, rather than the night out with the crew--though that food looked extra good.

To be fair, if I were as young as them and I'd just met someone, I'd probably talk about his looks, too. (I guess I just outed myself as being both old and that shallow. 😉)

In an earlier season of OG Below Deck, Kate mentioned to someone (who had been blackout drunk the night before) that she or Ben usually paid the bill. So I think you're right that production pays for the dinner. They probably give one of the (few) crew members who seems responsible the corporate card.

Deck team is down 2 people yet Faye thinks they aren't helping enough with interior?  Piss off, sweetheart.  And don't badmouth the bosun to the new guy.

Oh, the radios aren't working right (and/or the experienced bosun suddenly can't work the radio correctly) at the most critical time?  Yet the boat docks perfectly?  Yeah, I'm not fooled, Bravo.

I'm loathe to defend Faye, because I think she's a shit chief stew. But traditionally, one or two deck crew members has always been pulled in to help with service and/or wash dishes during meals. As far back as the series has gone. And there isn't anything crucial the deck crew needs to be doing otherwise at meal time. So it really is kind of their job to help out, just then.

I’m not sure that production pays for dinner.  On the BD Med season with Lexi it was stated that the chief stew pays and then everyone settles up with the chief stew.  It came to light because Lexi stated she was rich and then refused to pay her share so another crew member covered her share.  Since most, if not all, of the crew hated Lexi it was a storyline.

They could easily spend $200 a head at a place in Norway like that.

Some crew might prefer to just get a burger, save some of that money.

But production want you to go to specific restaurants, since they arranged to have cameras set up there.

So in that case, it would suck for the to spend more than they would otherwise, because production wanted the in a certain place.

I was this many years old when I realized that among Heather's guests were Angie H. and her fake social media account creating husband Chris.

I remember in the early 80's going to a big advertising awards banquet and they served Baked Alaska for dessert, we were all so impressed, even the guy at our table that crashed the dinner portion of the event, lol. That was the very last time I saw Baked Alaska served or on a menu anywhere.

Lol, I had this assignment in grade 9 Home Ec, as well. Did you attend school in Canada? We all followed the same curriculum and recipes.

I wouldn’t have let Oriana go down for the night until service was over, if it was clear she was still needed. Faye needs to manage better instead of just assuming the deckhands will always be there to help out. Also, if Oriana wants to play second stew, then she should gladly assume the responsibility. The interior on these shows constantly relies too much on the deck crew, IMO. But I give Faye props for talking to Lewis and not running directly to Kerry. It’s very clear that Mike is not suited for a yacht. The next one to go?

Wait, Lewis can’t work his mike? Good grief. That can be BAD.

Oriana’s explanation about the epaulets was complete bullshit. She totally manipulated Lewis to get them.

Wow…nice tip. Wasn’t expecting that much.

I’m getting the vibe that Seth is going to butt heads with Lewis. He reminds me of Don on Below Deck Season 3. (I’m not caught up yet on last week’s episode.)
