Real Estate Shows: Different Shows, Same Storylines

Is there a thread for the off the grid home shows?  I just started watching Unplugged Nation and I'm sure there was a Buying Off the Grid, or some such out there.  It's kinda fascinating and a move I'm wanting to explore.

I've started watching some of the Breakneck Builds, and find them interesting
This is about people having prefab houses put up, and there are a lot of different styles now availabe.
They feature 2 families on a half-hour show, so there's not a lot of filler.
Next up on Friday 11/13, at 11PM and 11:30PM.

Is anyone else watching Breakneck Builds?
This is about the new prefab houses available, and I was interested to see things that didn't look at all like the ones I've seen, which were like trailers without wheels.

They show all shapes and sizes of homes, and I don't think I'd know one if I saw it in situ.

The interesting thing is seeing the roof being built at ground level, etc.

It's on next on Tuesday, 11/17, at 8:30 AM, 9 and 9:30.  AM.

Ahh, okay. Thanks for the link. This was still not the right show, but interesting to see that. I looked through the list of the shows on HGTV and it's not there, but that doesn't mean much, just makes it harder to find. There's many shows I remember perfectly well by name not listed on that page for some reason. I really wish the old TWOP forums were easily viewed and searchable because I think I could find the answer there.

Just saw your post(s) recently.  If my memory serves me correctly, that was a Buy Me, Montreal.  And, that was a memorable episode, indeed!  In fact, I seem to recall that HGTV frequently reran it, probably b/c it was such an interesting, different episode.

I thought of the show!!! Luckily the information was lurking in my brain because I'm not sure I would have ever figured it out otherwise.

 

So, read my original post towards the end of page 2 (don't know how to find individual post permalink), but essentially I was looking for the show with the people who had a full tree sculpture in the middle of their living room, they thuoght it was a wonderful work of art that they didn't want to ever move even though they were selling. It was a hot mess.

 

Real Estate Confidential was the name of the show. And it was originally on Fine Living Network, not HGTV, but it re-aired on HGTV, I know this because at the time, I didn't get that channel. But remember when that was there before it was rebranded as the Cooking Channel? The series was based in LA, the episode I'm referencing had Connie De Groot as the agent. Also, I'm not crazy about how memorable this episode was, I found several mentions that the Beverly Hills Tree House was the episode submitted for the Emmy consideration.

 

Unfortunately, all links that I've found to watch the episode don't work. but there is a press release about the show mentioning the tree, and then best of all, there is a promo of the show up on YouTube. The blonde realtor is Connie, and towards the end of the promo you can see her with the clients as well as the tree sitting smack dab in the middle of the living room. Definitely watch the show's promo if you don't remember the episode, but are curious. Despite being short, you can see how ridiculous it is that there is a full life-size tree trunk in the middle of a house.

 

Thanks again to everyone who made suggestions on what this might be. Definitely remember the show now. Like I think there was one with a high-end auction by the water. They were sort of Buy Me like showing the good and the bad, but it chronicled different aspects of real estate focusing on a different realtor and property each week. It's a shame this only had the one short season.

Has anyone seen the show Humble Home Hunters? It's a Canadian show, so not sure if it can be viewed in the US. IN THE 2 episodes I watched, they had a budget of $150,000. I live in Vancouver--try $950,000 as a humble budget.

It's on HGTV, but I suspect only the Canadian version. I did like, when the home hunting couple complained that the room was so small that they couldn't have the room door and a cupboard door open at the same time, the voiceover said "first world problems".

My First Home is back on TLC. Appears that Saturday at Noon will be the time for new episodes for I assume a few weeks.

 

Used to really enjoy this show, but they went to this heavy on the fake/ridiculous drama stuff in the last two or so seasons that just made the show unwatchable. Watching today, there's hope that this season may be more like it was closer to the beginning. Today's the first time I made it through an episode of the show in at least two years without turning it off, so a step in the right direction. Don't worry, still grand expectations for comparatively low budgets. That of course hasn't changed, they are still first time homebuyers after all.

Anyone watching "We bought the Farm?"  As much as I love seeing a house hunters on more than a postage stamp sized yard, calling 2-4 acres a farm just cracks me up.

A show called Strange Sex, and one story line is "sellers must show house to prospective buyers, and every room has sex furniture."
Can't wait to see it, but some those are the ones that disappoint.

I just watched an episode of My First Home with a couple in Las Vegas.  She had huge, enormous hair, an affected strange way of speaking, and insisted on having her cat tour the properties because she refused to consider a house her cat didn't like.  He just went along for the ride.  I've never seen anyone like her-- there are no words...

We've watched that episode twice now (yay reruns!) and can't believe that couple either. There's passive, then there's that guy. Plus, most of her hair was fake. She had way less in her wedding photos. I love that the owner of the house chose them because they were a cat person too.

Did you find a good place for these?  I just watched a 2013 show, Homestead Rescue, on Discovery, and several more are scheduled.
A father and daughter from Alaska visit people who are trying to homestead.
The one I saw was a couple in Virginia, who were into free range everying, and their hogs were running off, and predators were taking their chickens.  The type of people you want to hit upside the head.
I missed the first few minutes, and apparently they didn't have an outhouse to start with.

Homestead Rescue?  That sounds like I need to look that one up.  I'm having enough predator troubles with my own chickens, so I like watching others find solutions.  Plus, my dog LOVES to watch chickens on TV.

I saw this! There's also a son. He's the one who teaches them how to hunt.

I wanted to hit them upside the head, too. Several times. The husband was so ignorant and unwilling to listen.

I saw the one before it, won't spoil, but you'll probably want to hit them upside the head, too! I find it hard to believe these people chuck everything and try to homestead without (apparently) even picking up a book on how to do it. Maybe they have, but the 2 shows I saw would suggest otherwise.

You are right about the outhouse :/

I removed it from my DVR schedule.
I was so fed up with faking like they were doing 2 houses, but it always ended up with one, mostly with the Snow family.
Too much talking, too many people.
It was one of my favorites, but they ruined it.

I was watching a rerun of Sell This House: Extreme, and they're struggling to remove the old carpet and get it out of the house.
Doesn't anyone know to cut it in strips to remove?  It's not like you're going to reuse it.

Yay!  Unplugged Nation is back.  The first episode in Idaho had a cool family - the dad was so gung-ho! Leaping naked into a shallow stream!! The budget was a bit on the high side, so it's hard to see spending that much money to save money by going off grid!  I do wish they had gone into a bit more detail on the jerky process.

I don't know if this is the right section for this but some of the things said on the house hunting shows are so ridiculous. 

I was watching something called My Lottery Dream House or something like that and the host said "I love how they did the windows so the light comes in".  Um, all windows allow light to come in, that's why we have windows.  Just the way he said it made it seem like they were super special windows that the installers did a super special job on because the light comes through them. 

I don't know who the host was, I've seen him on other shows and wasn't impressed by him but after the window comment I realized he's an idiot and turned the channel.

I watched half of one, and I think David Bromstad is the host. He has been on several shows since he won the HGTV competitive reality show years ago. I am not a fan, either.

I was watching a show on FYI network (rarely watch them, some of their shows seem like cheap imitations of HGTV shows). It was on looking for waterfront homes, which I enjoy. but they play this peppy background music that I find totally unnecessary and annoying. Sometimes there are even singers doing a lala type lyric. Hope HGTV doesn't get any ideas.

Anyone watching Building Hawaii?  Not a lot of drama in the 2 episodes I've seen, but some interesting facts about what is involved in building a house in Hawaii.  Planning and scheduling are important because everything has to be shipped in by boat and you can't just ran down to the local Home Depot and pick up something like cabinets or counter tops.  On one of the recent episodes they discussed the soil and landscaping issues involved with trying to plant things in the volcanic ground on the big island of Hawaii.  Beautiful scenery in the areas where they are filming, but land and houses are not inexpensive there.   In the episode where they are building a new lanai (deck) under an existing one, I noticed that the washer and dryer were located outside, and there was a basket of laundry on top of the washer.  This was an expensive house that had just been remodeled.  I cannot believe the owners didn't locate the laundry inside the house.  I wouldn't want my clothes outside on an open porch.  In one of the episodes, the wife of the builder couple went running through the house because she had a centipede on her back and it was biting her.  They discussed a little bit about that after the camera guy and producer got things under control.  It was funny, but I wouldn't want to find one of those in my laundry.

Yes, I watch Building Hawaii when I see it on, but I'm not sure it's still in production because all the episodes I see are ones I've seen before.

You mean you don't have a house with the reverse light windows? They are the LASTEST thing in home design, soon to be all over HGTV and sponsored by Lowes/Home Depot.

I've been watching a series on DIY called Restore which I like a lot.  There are about 10 episodes that I can find and they are all different styles of houses.  The host gives a lot of information about what would be appropriate for the period of the house and heaven forbid,  they actually remove paint from beautiful wood and restore it to its original condition inasmuch as possible.  I have been fascinated by the variety of houses in southern California where the show is produced.  Last night they worked on a Spanish revival, and they have done a mid century (not quite into the "modern" part), and a craftsman style.

I just discovered the British show Escape To The Country. There is a collection of episodes on Netflix. I marathoned them all in one weekend. It is my perfect house hunting show. Nice home buyers with reasonable budgets for what they want, beautiful house porn and a bit of history for each region. There is a YT channel with more seasons. I'm addicted.

laredhead, Restored is my new favorite show!  Brett is a pleasure to watch AND he's very knowledgeable.  I like that he takes the home owners to a grander version of their style of home so they can tell him what the do and don't like about it.  There is no repetitive drama for the "story".  The only thing that comes close is when the crew makes an unexpected and positive discovery.  Very refreshing!  Brett gets so excited about the restoration of each home.

My two favorite episodes so far were the spanish style home in California and the young widow who was restoring her little bungalow.  That one really pulled the heartstrings.  Brett seems as invested in bringing these homes back to life as the owners.  I feel like I've learned a lot with each episode I've watched.

I was looking forward to Home Town on HGTV, but what a snooze. They seem like a nice enough couple, but it was Fixer Upper 2.0 without the kids. I lost interest to the point that when I saw the final reveal with the fully furnished house, I didn't know if it was for staging or the clients were getting the house and all the stuff in it. I'll give it another try, but I was disappointed.

I was looking forward to the Home Town show even though the commercial annoyed me. I actually liked it! Loved their voices- her accent, his deep baritone... the buyers were great too. Both houses were so big and I loved what they did with them (even though I was skeptical).

Its totally a Fixer Upper knock-off but I'm okay with that. It's like the new versions of Flip or Flop.

I just caught the first episode of Home Town via On Demand last night.  I loved it!  I do like Fixer Upper but I appreciate that the male in this couple is not as goofy as Chip and the female is a bit more humorous than Jo.  

As a transplanted southerner, I hope we will get to see more of their little home town.

Buying Naked, a nudist version of House Hunters, is airing on TLC tomorrow, 4/7/17, 4 episodes beinning at 3AM ET. 
It's from a couple of years ago, and you learn that counter height matters, as do sharp edges.
I remember it as fun, and not salacious.
