S11.E05: Provenance

I've watched 9 minutes, it seems so forced, they really need to make some changes.  Bring in some new, younger talent, have them shadow the team and learn how to do undercover, or at least do undercover...

The storylines are contrite, nothing of substance, and if there is something that could be decent, it is either overlooked or rushed through it is pathetic, who seems to pass off on these storylines?

Random question, when is the 250th episode?  ECO seems to be the writer and it is about Hetty, which means she should actually be in an episode for once.

Second random question for today:  do the writers actually read forums for feedback? Or do they stick to the gushing idiots on facebook alone?

Wait ... don’t they pay said gushing idiots to post on Facebook?

What does it mean when you record the program and lose the last ten minutes due to football and you don’t cuss?

My takeaways .... the LAPD lady that first talked to Sam and Callen was a poor imitation of the woman that investigated Deeks for killing his partner (?) years and years ago.

The woman that ended up ‘helping’ Sam and Callen was a poor imitation of a character (Zoey?) on Person of Interest (I miss that show)

Wardrobe must really be mad at Nell. Now add Kensi to the list.

What is more scary?  Not remembering the majority of details in a post or remembering something like Kim’s name?  Like totally.

Surprisinhygly, not this week, they amazingly all said the same thing, it's crap, Nell looked ridiculous and several even said they fell asleep.  Some even asked where Hetty was.  Maybe the writers may get the hint.

For one thing, it means that you should probably set the timer on your DVR to  add more time since the football overrun happens almost every week.

I dunno, for the first time in a long time, I was actually amused by this episode. And since I’ve never really been a Hetty fan, I’m perfectly happy to not see her. But I do have one question: where’s Eric???

I agree this show keeps getting worse and worse.  As far as I'm concerned, it's gone completely off the rails.  Where's Hetty?  Where's Eric?  Mentioning Hetty once or twice an episode is ridiculous.  Whose running Operations?  Last night it looked like Nell was in charge.  And the storylines!  These people are supposed to be Naval Federal Agents dealing with terrorist activity, etc.  instead, they're running around like cartoon characters chasing after a stolen painting.  Since when did NCIS become the Art Police?  This show needs to be completely re-hauled and put back on track with its original mission statement (maybe even bring Nate back) or call it a day.  As a viewer from the beginning, I am insulted by the garbage I am seeing and the fact that 1/3 of the cast is absent with no explanation.  I don't know how much longer I can tolerate this crap.

My thoughts exactly. No supervision, weak plots, agents acting like teenagers; it's time to give this one last rites.

Couldn't agree more. And ALL this deterioration and disaster falls squarely on Gemmill's shoulders. He had his own "vision" for the series which CLEARLY sucks. This writer is the WORST writer EVER. If she didn't work for NCISLA, I bet she couldn't BUY a job as a writer on any show unless it was community cable. She only seems to be able to write EXTREME caricatures and the absolute dumbest dialogue. Everything about this was a train wreck: Nell's attitude that this was going to be "fun," Callen & Sam not asking for verification info from Catherine (or asking Nell to verify her background - because Sam thought she was "hot"), going to the crime scene without already securing authorization to investigate (and why pull in the painting's owner if they hadn't already gotten authorization to investigate?), Catherine doing "homework" & finding out what NCIS Office of Special Projects does (an insurance agent can google that?), the idea that the NCIS team can't find the auction house that handles exclusive/rare art without Catherine, that the Garcias can blow off federal agents, that Kensi has to dress like Halloween to even speak to an art dealer, that Sam lets an unknown individual roam through a crime scene without escort, the "what if" interrogation . . .  And why "hold onto your cards" from the agencies that are trying to FIND your painting? That's just idiotic. And why did the gal holding the painting wait until ALL the bad guys had been caught BEFORE trying to run away with the painting? I don't think it could get any worse.

Nice to watch something frivolous.

There's a difference between frivolous and completely idiotic. Other shows have frivolous episodes that are charming and humorous and fun to watch WITHOUT being dumb as a rock. This WAS a rock.

Since they killed off Hidoko, I feel like they've gone off the rails horribly. She was a great character, and they just shit all over that.

I loved Hidoko and would have loved to see her stay with the team WITHOUT Mosley (I think they started going off the rails with the "mole arc" and then completely with the horrible job of introducing Mosley). Just another bonehead decision by Gemmill to kill off Hidoko. Sorry, but his "vision" is driving this show into the ground.

Hetty's absence is about the actress.  I understand that although Linda Hunt wanted a reduced workload which was further complicated by her car accident the producers still want to keep Hetty around.  But this has been going on for so long and she does so little in the episodes she is in, they really need to stop pretending she's running things.  The character needs to be written out of the main narrative and that gap filled  and just brought in when Hunt is available.

What happened to Whiting and the IA investigation of Deeks about Boyle's death? Did that get closed and I missed it? I actually liked Whiting cuz she didn't take any crap.

Whiting knows that Deeks killed Boyle.  She's been using Deeks when she feels she needs him.

And this is yet ANOTHER absurdity. This IA investigation is in its 4th year. There is no way in hell an IA investigation takes that long. Whiting would be fired for incompetence. If you're going to have a show that's tenuously rooted in "reality," you simply can't ignore some things and expect viewers to just shrug it off.

It is certainly beyond far-fetched, but in all reality, a lot of things we see on this show are far-fetched.  Hetty still working, at her age is one, Deeks being able to keep his job looking like a hobo, is another (and I mean looking ridiculous compared to when he began).

I thought Deeks was cleared of Boyle's murder.  Wasn't there another officer arrested?  Didn't Hetty move their drugs in his garage?

Most likely I'm confusing things.

I think you are right, but what's her name (The IA Lady) knew that the other guy was a corrupt cop for other reasons and she knew Deeks confessed when the "Mole" shot her. So she has been holding that over Deeks to help her when she needs it, witness when his old boss kidnapped some witness because corrupt cops were going to allow a supervirus that would kill crops to bring down a country's crop system was going to be sold (and evidence was pointing to him being the corrupt cop).  Sorry, names are missing this morning and I am too lazy to look them up (5:37 am here).

Had to go back and review some eps, but I didn't see that Deeks was cleared and that's just one more problem with this IA story. Deeks said he tried to pin the killing on another dirty cop. Deeks probably wouldn't be "cleared" for killing Boyle or lying about it, but I doubt the series will ever really deal with it cuz they probably can't figure out how to do it without looking super dumbass. They'll probably let it just fade away.

I think the drugs in the garage stunt you're talking about was when everybody was arrested because Hetty had an incredibly stupid plan to try to get Carl, the mole, to give up who he was working for by putting him in that cage. I remember because that was like the dumbest idea I've ever seen on the show--and there have been some real dumb ones lately. This last episode counts.

Found this writeup from April, 2017, however I can't recall the episode.

"Previously, Deeks confessed to Whiting that he killed his former partner, Boyle, when he suspected that Whiting was on her deathbed after being shot. But she managed to pull through, and when that ominous message comes through, Deeks has no idea whether she remembers his confession, or whether it was lost in her subsequent blackout. But he's about to find out."

"When Deeks meets up with Whiting, she butters him up by accepting responsibility for her role in him almost losing Kensi, but then drops the bomb: she does remember his confession, but she's willing to drop the investigation if Deeks helps her out with another internal affairs investigation, into his former lieutenant, Roger Bates. Deeks knows Bates is shady and agrees to provide Whiting with the information she needs (he doesn't have much of a choice, of course). Apparently there are lots of internal affairs investigations percolating, so Whiting believes that Deeks is one of the only people she can trust. It will be interesting to see what kind of dirt this partnership uncovers."

No.  Hetty had dirty cop Quinn moved from one prison to another in exchange for the whereabouts of the dirty money he and Steadman (another dirty cop) made.  She then planted that money in Steadman's garage/house?  I think she did this to distract IA.

No kidding.  This would have been an ideal opportunity to bring in Linda Hunt in a low impact (for her) kind of way and have her dress Kensi's art connoisseur character.  That's Hettie's wheelhouse, and her favorite thing to do.  It was very out of character to not have her there building that UC persona from the wardrobe up.

I think Daniela and the other actor were having a blast in that gallery scene.  I was cracking up and rolling my eyes so hard.  You could cut the ennui with a knife!

Unlike 90% of the episodes, it seemed like the actors were enjoying themselves.  This episode was one of the reasons that this show remains in rotation on my DVR.  Guess that some enjoy rocks.

It's nice the actors were enjoying themselves, but that's not really the point. And, judging by the ratings, not a lot of people enjoy rocks. If this keeps up, the actors might be "enjoying themselves" right into cancellation. There are always new series waiting in the wings for a time slot. Wouldn't it be ironic if the new series by Olsen and Military that CBS just bought replaced NCIS:LA on Sundays?

It was a little funny, but it got old fast and it was also a waste of precious air time. It seemed the writer couldn't think of anything and so decided to drag out that scene. Jordana is such a mediocre writer I wish she would co-write with somebody who knows what they're doing.

There are a number of S11 episodes which I missed but I caught this one this morning...

What.Was.That?

I'm usually good with finding the positive but this was so unbearable that I couldn't even watch until the end. My biggest issues were that, as someone else pointed out, an insurance investigator was able to find out that Ops does undercover work (I mean, what? In what universe did that make sense to TPTB?) and that Sam and Callen just let this investigator run the show. Since when do they act that way and let an outsider dictate the terms? This was just plain awful! (The only fun thing was how they all reacted to the painting at the beginning and I liked that even "Callen, you need better taste" Sam was puzzled by the painting. It started off so well and went downhill like an avalanche).
