I definitely will be visiting Hobbiton! And yep, I'll be in the front front.
-
I've read nearly all of Kingsolver's works, and Demon Copperhead is near the top of the list of favorites of hers. It is so well-written, and, because she's from that region, she is able to capture the voice so well.

No, I ponied up for the front of the plane, but it's still a long time in a plane!

The plane ride is the one thing I'm dreading a little. More than 15 hours from DFW to Auckland -- and I have to get to DFW, too! But I will arrive back to the US before I leave NZ (my flight leaves NZ at about 1:30pm, and arrives in Dallas before 10am the same day).

Count me in, too, although I will be in New Zealand for the better part of December (and a little of November). I'll use the archive (of course), but I really won't know when to post, as I'll be in the future. Maybe Sundays in NZ?

That's interesting. We just sold our parents' house, and the lawyer who did the closing is distributing the checks. I (the executor) did not receive one big check to distribute. Which made my life easier. The courts. I had to sign so many documents to be formally appointed executor! And that was necessary for the bank to allow me to open an estate account, which was necessary to pay bills for the estate. You have to list and value all assets, including any bank accounts (and the courts check!), and after 18 months, you have to submit an accounting of everything. This is true for where I live anyway.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Browncoat replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Peeve related to the cheese and crackers discussion in chit-chat -- when you want cheese and crackers, and somehow, every cracker in the stack (I like saltines) is broken in more than two pieces. -

That's me, except my siblings are encouraging me to take a little extra money for my expenses. This is also me. When I'm sick, I just do the bare minimum, which usually means feeding myself, and shifting from the bed to the couch in the mornings and back to bed in the evenings. I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't have a television in the bedroom. If it's a planned incapacitation, like a surgery, I'll do a lot of meal prep beforehand, so all I have to do is heat food up in the microwave.

Same, same! I'm afraid so. And an Elvis song came on right after it.

I was listening to an oldies radio station on my way to work this morning, and "Bye, Bye, Bye" came on. Normally, I'd switch stations, but, thanks to Deadpool, I just had to listen to the whole thing.

Same! I hated the way she treated her own daughter, who was awesome.

I like Spanglish.

Hopefully he at least had the sense to go when the Hot Now sign was lit. Hot, fresh Krispy Kreme are sooo tasty! It's like eating warm, sweet air.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
Browncoat replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
OMG, the Firehouse Subs ad where they're singing "hook and ladder, hook and ladder" over and over is driving me insane. It might have been okay once or twice, but it plays at least once during every commercial break during every show I've watched today. -
I thought it would have been a fun twist (heh) if Kate's mom had been played by Jamie Gertz. Not necessarily the same character, mind you, just the same actor.

Family Ties: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Browncoat replied to DeLurker's topic in Everything Else
There were always kids like that. I knew one kid who knew he was going to join the military immediately after graduation, so all he really needed to do was pass his classes. Smart guy, but didn't care about most of high school. Except history. He liked learning about all the battles and wars and things. He excelled in the military, too. (This was in the 80s.) -

Unfortunately, COVID is more like the flu, or, really, the common cold. A hefty percentage of colds are caused by corona viruses (along with adenoviruses and rhinoviruses), so we'll likely need boosters annually, just like with the flu. ETA: or what @chitowngirl said. Must remember to read the entire thread before replying. -

Same, same, @SoMuchTV. I am procrastinating those dishes as I type. -

It wasn't horribly painful, but it itched like crazy! And it is still tingly around my eyebrow when I'm stressed. -

I hear "needs doing" a lot.
