  1. If Agent Carter is a huge success (and, judging by all the positive early reviews, it will be), maybe Tara Butters can give her husband some pointers on how to write a female 'superhero'.
  2. First, whenever a producer praises his own show, it always sounds so self-serving. It's like complimenting yourself. There's more legitimacy if the praise comes from an independent third party. Second, I found the choice of words odd - "'makes it necessary' for Laurel to don the Canary costume". Sounds like Laurel had no choice and was forced into it. In other words, don't blame Laurel - she had no choice but to become the BC (with little training). I posted an article in another thread positing how Laurel is a reactive character. This seems consistent with that. Also, the spoiler says "the Canary costume" and not the "Black Canary costume". Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but it sounds like Laurel's putting on her version of Sara's costume, lending credence to the theory that she's trying to fool someone into thinking she's Sara/Canary. Maybe we'll get another MG interview later on that backtracks on Laurel becoming the BC so soon, in which he 'clarifies' that she's not the Black Canary yet (just like Oliver's not Green Arrow yet), but just starting on that journey. I still don't understand why Laurel has to become the Black Canary just because her name is Dinah Laurel Lance. If it's okay to change comic book canon to not make the Black Canary an expert martial artist, then why is it not okay to change comic book canon to make Sara Lance the Black Canary? Even if Laurel starts taking martial arts lessons at the age of 30, she'll never be as good as others who have taken martial arts lessons for years.

  4. After reading about what happened in the latest Arrow digital comic, I'm bitter that fans are forced to buy those comics in order to read scenes that I'd rather watch on TV - and instead are forced to suffer through what's actually put on our TV screens.
  5. The link should work but maybe there's a system incompatibility - I don't know. Alternatively, you could Google the headline ("why laurel lance is arrow’s weakest link") and get to the article that way.
  6. From 12 Monkeys forum. The actress is Amanda Schull, and she plays Dr. Cassandra Railly. I guess the blonde ponytail and glasses look is catching on (see also Kristen Kringle on Gotham).
  7. Just read the new TV Line spoiler posted by statsgirl. Wow, MG is really pushing the next 3 episodes hard ("among the best we've ever done" and "incredibly compelling")! 14. The Odyssey also set the double standard for fidelity. Penelope was completely faithful to Odysseus during the 20 years that he was away, even when besieged by many suitors. However, while Odysseus was emotionally faithful to her (he still loved her), he was not physically faithful. He had sex with Circe in order to save his men but then stayed with her as her lover for at least a year. He subsequently becomes Calypso's willing lover for the seven years that she kept him on her island. He even sleeps with her the night before he is allowed - thanks to Athena's intervention - to leave the island. (There's also a reference to his having grown tired of Calypso.) Also, Odysseus fathered at least one son with either Circe or Calypso. I've read sources that still consider Odysseus a "faithful" husband because he never stopped loving Penelope and persevered in returning home to her (and his kingdom) even though it took 10 years (after the fall of Troy). His weakness in succumbing to sexual temptation and his physical infidelity is regarded as acceptable in a man of his times. It would be natural and organic for Oliver and Felicity to have gotten together by now, but I also dread it. As soon as they get together, the EPs will be looking for ways to break them up because - as others have said above- they don't know how to write a good romantic relationship. Also, I hate that MG put a lot of the Oliver & Felicity relationship build-up scenes (during the hiatus) in his digital comics and not on the TV screen. It just seems like sacrificing the show in order to sell more comics.

  16. quarks, thank you for your thoughtful post. My initial impression had been that the EPs just needed Oliver/Arrow to disappear for a few episodes in order to spotlight and facilitate the emergence of Laurel as the Black Canary. So your comments make me think that maybe the EPs are more complicated in their thought processes than I gave them credit for.

  22. I think the success of a spin-off show will depend on how well-made and well-cast the show is, and not on the popularity of the superhero or actors... Flash was a tv series before, back in the 1990's, and only lasted one season then. Last year the little-known Sleepy Hollow was a surprise hit because it was refreshing, witty and different, and cast good actors (of course, it's gone downhill this season). On the big screen, when the first Iron Man movie debuted, not many people knew of that superhero outside of the comics world, but it was so good, it became surprisingly successful. I think the introduction of every new DC superhero on Arrow or The Flash is, in part, a test of a possible future spin-off. It doesn't mean that the CW will go forward with one or the other. For example, take Ted Grant/Wildcat. JR Ramirez seems pretty bland right now, but we haven't really seen that much of him and the actor looks like a typical CW pretty boy. Who knows? Surround him with great supporting characters, give him more to do, and maybe he'll surprise us. Before we saw Stephen Amell's acting ability, he looked like a typical CW pretty boy. When Grant Gustin appeared on Arrow last season, I thought he lacked charisma, but then he impressed me on The Flash this season. Ray Palmer is more of a question mark for me, but Brandon Routh has been decent in other projects, so maybe he could be good on his own show if they retcon his creepy stalkerish vibe. Robbie Amell was horrible on The Tomorrow People, so he's the biggest question mark for me, but sometimes it's the matter of the right project. I wouldn't be surprised if TPTB are even throwing around the idea of a LOA show.
