Small Talk: Keep $%@^*@! that Chicken!
dusang replied to Lisin's topic in The Daily Show With Jon Stewart [V]
I just saw that Ted Cruz has announced his run for the presidency and I immediately thought, "how can a guy who was born in Canada run for president?" But, a quick Google search showed me that this is not unprecedented and completely valid. So then I thought, "they why the fuck did the whole birther movement exist for Obama?" and a quick Google search pointed me to an article in the Washington Post that, without any irony, explained that the "birther" issue wasn't about being born outside of the States, it was about the massive fraud that Obama was attempting to perpetrate on the American public by lying about where he had been born and, therefore, these two situations are completely different. So then I thought, "oh fuck you all." Sorry, that has nothing to do with anything but I felt like this might be a forum where I'd get some validation for my feelings of disgust and rage. -
I'm not totally down with her entire ensemble but (and apologies for referencing a later ep) her pjs in ep 2 are the best and I want them immediately. People keep talking about an eventual "click-buy" functionality on TV and I usually oppose the concept but... I really want those pjs.

Just watched the YouTube video of the Municipal Violations. I'm so glad the final commercial made the point that it totally has to do with race -- the minute that guy said he got a ticket for "loitering" I was like, "that's literally a ticket for standing while black."

Trailers & New Movies: Coming Soon to a Cinema Near You!

For a nano-second I thought the brunette was Katie Holmes and was like "Whaaaa????!!!" But no. Also, for all his crazy I just can't fully hate Tom Cruise. I just watched Edge of Tomorrow (variably known as Live Die Repeat) and it's just super fun. And, again despite his crazy, he does have a long-standing reputation of being super nice to errrrybody. Incidentally, it's been 19 years since the first Mission: Impossible and I just find that.... unbelievable. Where has the time gone?!? Anyhoodle -- with MI:5, Spy, and Man from U.N.C.L.E. this is going to be an espionage-filled summer and I am actually quite looking forward to it. -
I haven't seen the episode yet but just hearing you guys talk about politicians and fourth graders makes me think of "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington" -- Cesspool on the Potomac indeed!

"The Daily Show": Week of 3/16/15

I don't know about the U.S. but in Canada it was once described to me as you can discriminate against (refuse service to) people for any number of reasons (hair colour, smell, logo-ed clothing, piercings, etc.) but there are certain and specific forms of discrimination that are prohibited by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms -- religion, race, gender, sexual identity, etc. So under any circumstances, at any time, anywhere, those forms of discrimination are illegal. Then there comes the interpretation of which rights trump which -- if your religious expression is to be racist, does that trump the law preventing racial discrimination? (By precedent, probably not.) -

You know when you know you're going to be disappointed by something but you just can't help but be super excited for it anyway? -
I see your point but, at the end of the day, unlike the debate team, other people are profiting from student athletes. My problem is partly that professional sports involves too much money -- how can we, as a people, as a society, justify the millions of dollars spent paying a guy who can throw/catch/kick a ball real good?? But, since we do, and these poor dudes are the centre of this multi-billion dollar industry, and their whole lives can be destroyed by one bad landing in a practice or a game ... they should probably get paid. In real money.

"Oh HELL No!" Movie Moments That Anger Up the Blood
dusang replied to Spartan Girl's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Agreed -- I can't hate on Never Been Kissed because it introduced the world to Michael Vartan at his cutest. (That's also one of the reasons I continue to harbour kind feelings toward Drew Barrymore -- as producer she insisted he be cast!) -
I so enjoyed this! I can't even enumerate the stupid little things that made me laugh. I liked Jake's story, I liked Boyle's story, and I liked Terry & Holt's story. Gina was a bit immature but also funny and she really didn't get much screen time. Although I can sort of understand the comparisons, I don't really feel like Gina is the April of the office. First, she has actual passions and interests (like dance!) that she actively pursues, rather than exclusively sitting on the sidelines and mocking others' interests and passions. Second, because she has done more for others in 2 1/2 seasons than April did in 6. Third, because, for all her weirdness, Gina has actually taken responsibility for her life and made adult decisions, rather than relying on others to shepherd her along. But mostly because I haaaaaaaate April and I just don't hate Gina.

Clash of the Egos: On-Set Drama and Feuds
dusang replied to Treebeard's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Honestly, Hollywood Homicide was so terrible I think they might have both been in shame spirals at the time. That's a new story from The Abyss -- the one I'm familiar with is James Cameron making Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio do her death-swim so many times she was nearly dead. So apparently Mr. Cameron attempted to kill both his stars in that film. -
Or perhaps, "Owe you"? They are pretty adorable. I like how that move could have come off as a little bitchy with another character (on another show) but between Jake & Amy it's just part of the flow.

I admit that I haven't watched many of the interviews since Jon announced his departure but every one that I have watched has revolved more around Jon and his departure than the guest. -
Favorite SNL Sketches: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is Still Dead

I had never heard of/seen the Reba one -- that is batshit!! I kind of love it but I also kind of love Reba (for real, the real woman) so I'm confused as to how I'm supposed to feel. -
In any movie, fiction or non, it just makes my skin crawl when people burn photos/keepsakes/momentos/etc. Like, I get you're mad right now but please, stop and think about what you're doing!!

Well, Holt is good at... emotion.

Blerg. Clearly I'm not super up on what the kids are into these days. But gawd it looks awful. He should take style advice from Jamal, I've only seen him at the White Party but he looked gooooooood.

I've only recently actually watched any of this show and I haven't seen an entire episode but all I can think is how much I hate Hakeem's whole look. It's like the worst parts of 1987 vomited back up. Is that a thing now? Am I that old?
-
I thought of Fresh Prince too. The episode where Will's father comes back and then leaves again always makes me cry. Honestly, as odd/annoying as the Pinkett-Smith family becomes, I cannot fully hate on Will Smith because of my residual Fresh Prince love. Back to B99, I enjoyed Jake jumping on the allowance thing with Holt. Rationally, I think Jake would annoy me but I simultaneously love him. And kind of want to jump him. I also loved Holt thanking Jake for doing him a "favour" by taking Scully away.

Massively late to the party but I've just watched and OMG I flove these people. Every interaction between Jake & Amy is amazing. Holt & Terry are amazing. I just can't even. I FLOVE THEM ALL. Also, I would totally use those vows and I loved that wedding dress. What does Jake say as he's walking away from Amy with the great-aunt? Before "she's very handsy"?

I feel like that headline should be "lender fronted by Montel Williams" not backed -- he's not the money, he's not the brains.

In the Media: The Blogs Must Be Crazy

I feel deceived and betrayed that jmz.com is not active. (Although there are actually lots of sites that do exactly what she's talking about.) -
I've never seen the earlier King Kongs and I won't argue that Jackson's was a great film but I do remember being stunned at the technical achievement of King Kong. He was so real, I loved him like my cats.

My BIL hate-listens to some crazy right-wing conspiracy theory podcast and I just can't imagine the long-term entertainment value. Eventually (like, say, minute five) the cost of my blood pressure meds overshadows any accidental humour, you know?
