Great game by James and Emily in DJ; I was rooting for her over him, though, as I have a completely irrational hatred of bow ties with anything other than a tuxedo. It always bugs me in categories like 3-named-people that all three names aren't required. The abs TS surprised me. I was terrible in chill, only coming up with "Riptide" (I almost got Sublime, but couldn't get it from brain to mouth fast enough), but if I could have swapped that out I'd have had a fantastic first round; I got all but Keith Haring in stamps and ran the rest. Same with DJ -- books was my disaster category, in which I only got Rob Roy, but I ran everything else. FJ was close to an instaguess, and I figured it had to be correct.

It's a tough task to make me like a CJ-less episode, but, boy, did they pull it off with "17 People". I FF through Ainsley's bullshit and I don't care about Josh and Donna, but Toby's righteous fury in the face of Bartlet's flippant arrogance and Leo's delusional downplaying is riveting. All these years later, and I cannot look away for a second. "The National Security Advisor and the Secretary of State didn't know who they were taking their orders from. I wasn't in the Situation Room that night, but I'll bet all the money in my pockets against all the money in your pockets that it was Leo. Who no one elected! For 90 minutes that night there was a coup d'état in this country." Ah, back when we could all agree coups were bad. And then Richard Schiff's face when Toby meets with the speechwriters and has act as if all is normal is the perfect ending.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Bastet replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Long ago, I asked my dad what he'd do if a boyfriend came to him and asked if he could propose to me, and my dad said once he stopped laughing, he'd tell the guy it had been nice knowing him, because once I found out about this, there would be no more relationship, never mind marriage. 100% accurate. -

Yeah, everything about proposals is a peeve to me, since I think they're an utterly ridiculous way to get engaged. "Promposals" are on another level of ridiculous. When I was in high school, if you were dating someone there wasn't even a need to ask, it was simply a given that you would go together, and if not and you wanted to ask someone to go with you to prom (which not everyone did; plenty of people went with their friend group, or skipped it), you asked, "Hey, wanna go to the prom with me?" That was it. -
I've been falling asleep to my West Wing DVDs lately, ending my day by pretending Jed Bartlet is president. I got jolted back to the shit show that is reality when he said, "They'll want retaliatory tariffs, and you know what that means? A return to Smoot-Hawley and the Great Depression."

I would have liked Laura's run to continue, but she's already in the ToC and I'm happy for Harvey, so really I just wish he'd have come along several games later. The Greta Gerwig TS was a bummer, but none of them surprised me. I ran teeth and the vocabulary category, but that was it for the first round. I got all but Ozzie Smith in baseball, but missed two each in the rest. I did really well in DJ, though. I missed two in churches, but ran Australia, commands, and mentors and got all but One Hundred Years of Solitude in books and all but Eddas in E. FJ was an instaget; for some reason I have amassed a pretty decent mental scrapbook of world flags, and that's one I know.

Tournament of Champions - Season 6 Discussion Thread
Bastet replied to Harry24's topic in Tournament Of Champions
Stephanie vs. Michael - I'm bummed about this one. I've had both their food, and I like hers more, plus she remains one of my favorite Top Chef winners, so I pretty much always root for her. I hate potatoes, so I didn't want that component of either dish, but they both looked so good I would have loved to taste the rest. It all came down to him using the vanilla better. Brittany vs. Shota - I like both of them, and was hella impressed by her win against the Titans, but have "known" Shota longer, so I started out torn. The way he was dripping sweat everywhere again grossed me out, though (sweat is one of the few things I find gross, and only when dripping like that; he'd worn a sweat band the last time after dripping like mad at first, so I don't know why it was missing this time), so I became Team Brittany. Mackerel is not a favorite, but they both made enticing dishes and the way he got that perfect skin was impressive. Kaleena vs. Chris (Cosentino) - I have liked her since she won Beachside Brawl, and like her more with each show I see her on. I like how serious she is while cooking, I like how she talks about living with anxiety, and I appreciate what I've read about her commitment to running kitchens without the toxic attitudes that have so long been a staple of the industry. I liked every ingredient in both dishes this time, so I'd have cleaned my plate, but hers appealed to me more -- that loin was perfectly cooked, and I think it was smart to stuff the pepper rather than the pork. Britt vs. Chris (Oh) - I've had his food and it's delicious, and his dish was more to my taste (in addition to hating potatoes, I also hate coffee), but I'm still blown away by her previous performances on this show and that plate was visually perfect, so I was rooting for her and am glad to see her get the win. -
I am thrilled hardly anyone sends cards anymore. They just go right in the recycling bin (if they're paper; those forsaken photo cards are trash). I quit sending them about ten years ago, other than to a handful of old people who'd have been bummed not to get one. Only one of those is still alive, so I send precisely one Christmas card each year. I never sent birthday cards.

Exactly; Trump being off golfing may have granted a temporary reprieve in his first term, but this time he has Elon doing the job in his absence (and often in his presence). And, as I said the last time this came up, by job I mean coup.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

As described, he wasn't talking to her, he was talking to his family in an exaggerated imitation of her accent. Sounds like an asshole, whether neurotypical or neurodivergent. -
I'll eat biscuits and gravy if served to me, no problem, but I'd never order/make it, so last week's wasn't a terribly exciting episode for me in terms of food, but I liked that the challenger wanted to - and did - beat his former boss but was also touched to hear Bobby say he's proud and wants good things for him (but way to kill any suspense on who wins he first round by putting biscuits in the title and then having one chef talk about his biscuit empire). "I feel like I'm at Costco" from the actor tasting agnolotti samples in this week's made me laugh. And in this one I wanted to devour both final round dishes. It must have been filmed before Shirley Chung began her cancer battle and closed her restaurant. The challenger vaguely bugged me, plus I love pesto - and arugula - so I was rooting for Bobby.

I wound up missing the finals, but since Juveria lost, I'm okay with not seeing it. Boo! I managed to vaguely recognize returning champ Laura, and was rooting for her to continue her streak, so at least there's that. I was surprised no one guessed Ford just based on the year. I just knew Gus Grissom was going to be a TS, and was preemptively sad. I missed two in GU, but had a pretty good first round; I only ran rogue, but I got all but Qdoba in nachos (and now I want nachos), all but pig in animals (thanks to the monkey TS, I now have Pippi Longstocking's song in my head), all but the Mad Max movie in wars, and all but Grace Coolidge in Secret Service. I know this will shock everyone, but I was terrible in the Bible category; I only got Ark of the Covenant, and only after Roger spotted Ark. If not for that, I'd have kicked ass in DJ; I missed two in songs, but ran the rest. As predicted based on the category, I had no idea for FJ.

Good gods, they need to stop hooking so many ghosts up with each other. The UK version got it right, but of course American TV has to America.

Yes, he dropped the case against Zoey, the sorority sister Olympia was defending -- she's the one who handed the spiked drink to Violet and urged her to chug, but it came out at trial she didn't spike the drink, or even know it was spiked. He did not, however, agree to Olympia's request at the end of last week's episode that he not charge Kennedy, the sorority sister who turned out to have done the spiking. She is the one who, in this episode, was willing to testify in the class action (about her choosing Slamm'd because of its danger), but only with immunity from any criminal prosecution. (I don't know if the ADA changed his mind in the second half of this episode, as I haven't finished it yet.)

Good to know, because I want this latest ghost to be like Carol, someone we only see occasionally. I was successful at keeping "It's Raining Men" out of my head until Isaac chimed in with "Hallelujah" and that was it -- the chorus played in my head on a loop. Thor suddenly having onion-scented fingers people can smell over the wolf urine is rather stupid, as is Flower - who can't remember things she's been told repeatedly for years or even decades (including who Jay and now Isaac are) - suddenly fixated on being told one time months ago Sass is a virgin. But, fundamentally, finally an Alberta episode -- she's had nothing to do all season but react to others. Those reactions were hilarious, but I'm glad to see a little more from her.

Yes, because it doesn't have as much protein* as a cat should eat, and is instead high in carbohydrates -- carbs curb the appetite for a shorter time than protein, making the cat hungry again sooner. *Protein and phosphorus got lumped together. The prescription diet is based on research done back in the '60s on mice, and tested in dogs. Unlike either of those species, cats are obligate carnivores. Those with CKD need reduced phosphorus, but not the reduced protein that the Rx food manufacturers use to help achieve it.

Yeah, there was an article posted upthread that gave a clear explanation of Musk's "misreading" (to be generous with characterization) of SS data as the basis of his outlandish claims about tens of millions of dead people getting SS (when there are only 67 million recipients total; really, dude, half of them are actually dead?) -- because when you talk to people who actually know the databases (plural) and their history, rather than techbros, it turns out to be quite simple:

I don't remember that, just that he said he wasn't funding it. I'll have to re-watch. Her decision to take the kid with her per her dying father's request, since they'd be back before the ex's visitation time started, and her later panic that led to her shutting them in the conference room rather than leaving him with the social worker and going to the hearing given the power differential and her ex suddenly pushing for a custody he'd never wanted until now both rang very true to me. Unwise, or even flat-out stupid, okay, but not at all uncommon under the respective emotional circumstances. The characterization of the two parents was one of the most realistic they've shown in the cases thus far.

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals
Bastet replied to OtterMommy's topic in Everything Else TV
First and foremost to justify her spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (which she initially turned down), but, yeah, once she decided to go for it, most of the songs she chose to cover were among his favorites because he knew the genre so well. I love her description of his reaction to it: He said it was "pretty good", which was the equivalent of "somebody else jumping up and down and saying, ‘That’s great!’” I heard another interview, but I can't remember the media outlet, where she said the same thing but added "with pom poms" to the jumping up and down part, and the imagery of what the low-key Dean's words translated to in a more excitable sort of person entertains me.- 4.3k replies

The truth hurts, doesn't it, Justice Roberts? Which was inaccurate. Trump centered identify politics by campaigning on a platform of hate-fueled denial of rights to those who are not straight, cisgender, Christian, white men without disabilities. To which Democrats had to respond with a commitment to governing for the benefit of all, not just that group. But the mainstream media ignored that straight, cisgender, Christian, white men without disabilities is an identity. So it only got called identify politics when it was a Democrat defending any of the various groups under attack with every given Trump proposal. If it's about white folks, no mention. People of color? Identity! Men, no mention. Women? Identity! Cisgender? Not a single peep, ever. Transgender? Identify! Agenda! Danger!

They don't even bring knives, they bring the rule book (which combines law, procedure, and precedence -- plus respect, decorum, and common sense). Which, yes, has been and should be the way. But not when we're in the midst of a coup; all the fundamentals have been changed by a wannabe dictator, so the response cannot be rooted in what no longer exists.
-
No, he said it in the flashback of the baby formula case episode (introducing himself and Olympia to the factory workers). I don't know if that was the first time. The trip would have happened entirely during her time (she had primary custody, the dad visitation), and that's a scenario that has happened often in real life, especially with vague or non-existent reference in the custody agreement to such travel.

I don't (well, satellite); it's my primary source, and then I have access to several streaming services through other people's accounts to supplement my viewing. Every single one of those services have things that bug me, and Netflix is the only one I'd pay for if I no longer had such access (because I have by far the longest watch list there; I'd power my way through it and be done), but I don't have issues with Dish. It's easy and reliable, and I can go around the dial during commercials.
