Interesting, in theory it should be easy to assess risk as it's what insurance companies do the world over & have done for a long time. The problem with risk is that you have to draw the line somewhere on what you can & should do to mitigate that risk & all of the disasters you mention were known to be a possibility but the chances of them happening were very slim & the upfront cost would far outweigh the possibility of them happening, with the exception of maybe Houston which had a lot to do with greedy developers building where they shouldn't have built. I would ask is it a failure to assess & manage that risk or a once in a lifetime (that we know of) occurrence of that happening & therefore the risk was worth taking. It's okay to say that with hindsight it wasn't worth the risk but it certainly was up until last week in the case of L.A. You are of course 100% correct that it has nothing to do with party but that hasn't stopped one party from blaming the other & everything from DEI to dam removal hundreds of miles away and everything in between, none of which would have had any bearing on the fires whatsoever and weren't even decisions made by just one party. Like they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and there sure is going to be a lot of it in the next few months. None of which will help the people affected by the fires with what they really need right now.

Her the buck stops at the leader (Newsome/Biden) and how everything is his fault including wildfires & the responses to them & her refusal to listen to actual facts rather than Trump talking points & faux news bullshit like it's because of immigrants/DEI policies/dams hundreds of miles away being removed/fish species and any other wild & crazy reasons is already out of hand & is only going to get worse. I want to see her blame Trump for everything that happens in the next 4 years because "the buck stops at the top" bullshit that she keeps spouting now but I won't be holding my breath.

I saw someone (not Flagg) saying how bad it would be generally for the housing market in L.A. and that only the very rich would be able to live there in future as nobody would be able to get a mortgage after this because the insurance companies won't insure any houses and no bank would give a mortgage without insurance so only the very rich could afford to buy or build a house as they don't need to worry about a mortgage in a lot of cases. In general California is becoming a bit of an insurance desert as a lot of insurance co's have pulled out of CA entirely citing fires, earthquakes and general natural disasters as their reasoning now that they've made their money out of people for decades. Doesn't matter if you live in a place that has never had any of these either as they're just leaving CA altogether.

I remember Wall's as a British ice cream company & that looks exactly like I remember the cornetto from when I was a teenager, the nuts were usually hazelnuts which are used a lot in the U.K. with Cadbury whole nut being my favourite chocolate bar. The places you mention are not too close to the fires. Most affected areas are where normal people live rather than the millionaires everyone hears about & a lot don't have insurance because a lot of the insurance companies have refused to renew policies, and some of those people had the same insurance for over 30 years & the way they were abandoned by their insurance companies after so long is outrageous. Now all they have after decades of paying for the house etc is the land value. It's sickening.

I don't know where I sit on the Meta getting rid of fact checkers issue as I swing from one side to the other BUT what I will say is that it stinks of appeasement & kow towing to a certain orange felon now that he will be in power as him & a lot of his supporters (Faux news etc) hate to be fact checked as they make up shit as they go along. The N.O. & L.V. incidents being the latest where they immediately stated it was illegal immigrants & the border issues that caused both when they were nothing to do with either, not that they go back & correct it for everyone to see when they are actually fact checked or just plain wrong as it's already out there & in a lot of cases is stated as fact rather than opinion. Not a little like the fact that someone keeps saying that 38,000 Americans died building the Panama canal which is just a made up number & most of the deaths were West Indian workers & not Americans anyway. He is right saying that most died of Malaria but he's using the knowledge we have today about how Malaria is spread like it was known science in 1880 and early 1900s when it was built. The first attempt in 1880 was by the French when most of the deaths occurred due to Malaria & not America so again he's making it up to suit his narrative. But in the end I feel that the people who will benefit the most from it are the very people who need to be fact checked on an hourly basis and in some cases every time they open their mouths or write absolutely anything on any social media platform.

Don't blame him, I've had one for 16 years now but coming back into the country has become a pain in the ass over the last few years with immigration officers giving me the third degree as to why I haven't become a citizen yet, a good old "because I don't wanna" just causes more problems now whereas 6 or 7 years ago it just got a knowing nod & now it just gets more questions & sneers from the officers. I'm seriously thinking of applying for citizenship and becoming a dual citizen before the cost becomes exorbitant & Trump kicks me out for being a British citizen & not murican enough.. Hope they're safe & well.

There is no such thing as a green card, that's just a catch all that people use for various things but mainly it is a permanent resident card or resident alien card. It certainly does not mean you can live & work in the USA indefinitely as it lasts for 10 years after the first one which lasts 2 years & you can renew it after the 10 years without too much trouble but it does cost you $s. You could still be deported for quite a few reasons until/if you become a citizen but not everyone wants to become a U.S citizen for various reasons not least among them being the incoming president.
