  1. I was glad he did, too, but I don't blame Patti for giving it a try. I've seen plenty of food show contestants get scolded for naming a dish incorrectly: "This tastes great, but it's not X. I'm offended that you would call it that." So at least she didn't try to pass it off as a sandwich.
  2. Because I need to shout this into the unheeding universe: nothing makes me more table-flipping angry these days than the phrase "party of Lincoln."
  3. I needed that laugh. :) Everyone's crystal balls are thoroughly cracked, but I honestly never thought repealing the ACA was possible. Certain members of Congress don't give one shit about sick people, but they absolutely care about getting reelected. (Although ... 20M citizens who rely on the ACA vs X number of right-wingers who want it gone? Who the fuck knows any more.) The same goes for privatizing social security and medicare. First of all, what dumbfuck company would take those money-losers on? More importantly, look at the voting stats by age.

    U.K. TV

Thanks for the recommendation. I've finished all the shows I've been catching up on and need something to distract me instead of overposting here. ;)
  5. Bernie tried to game the system by becoming a Democrat for two seconds, then immediately ran back to his bunker of petulance when he lost. People got behind him because they saw him as "genuine" just like people got behind Trump for the same reason. Thanks, I guess that's somewhat encouraging. People aren't willing to vote for an outright racist, just for someone he endorses. My point was muddled anyway. Wallace was elected in his time, but I believed we had seen the last of his and Strom Thurmond's ilk, and it's that conviction that's been shaken.
  6. That's horrible. Are you in Georgia, @ParadoxLost? (I had to look that up, because my avoidance of political news means I don't know anything else that's going on, either.)
  7. Welp. I found out my former boss, whom I adore and respect, voted for Trump. He's a multi-millionaire business owner but also a smart, kind-hearted, observant Jew. I didn't ask why and we didn't discuss it further. For me, it's progress that it doesn't affect my feelings about him. I am able to understand and forgive under some circumstances! Putting that in Orange-speak, I can now say I'm the least judgemental person you'll ever meet.
  8. How about them crime rates, folks? The ones Trump complained about so much? I for one am going to keep an eye on them once Agent Orange takes office. You can imagine which direction I believe they will head.
  9. Obama should have kept his trap shut about the West Wing staff. Would have been amusing to have a clueless Trump surrounded by Democrats! All hail this photo, taken when Obama was giving his congratulatory speech about Trump's win.
  10. As much as I think he's a bombastic egomaniac, I would have seriously considered voting for Marc Cuban if he had been running instead of Trump. I've departed party lines twice since 1972 to vote for one Republican and one Independent, so there is precedent. ;) I wonder what would happen if George Wallace and David Duke had been running now. Hey, the latter might be able to resurrect his political career in the current climate. I'd also be interesting in hearing arguments for or against raising the voting age to 21 again.
  11. Why in shit should I watch Trump on TV or give 60 Minutes another viewer stat? To begin with, I can't believe a single promise or policy that comes out of his mouth. He spouts opposing opinions every week and sometimes in the same hour. I have come out of this election with a burning hatred for network news, so screw them sideways as well.
  12. I was appreciative before but now am also inspired by Seth's integrity and resolve. He could have easily been just another Fallon or Colbert or SNL and tried to book Trump for ratings or played up to him to appease NBC and sponsors, but he refused -- most likely to his personal detriment (online haters) and also putting the show's ratings in jeopardy. He continued to be one of the leading late night voices calling out Trump again and again and again and holding his orangey feet to the fire. Thank you, Seth, truly.
  13. @Bastet, thanks for sharing that. Was the atmosphere any more positive at your office last week? Civil rights law firms and non-profits are, I fear, going to be very busy. The rest of us are fortunate that people who choose that specialty already have a lot of innate resolve and fortitude. I set up a recurring donation to the ACLU today, for whatever tiny bit that may be worth for them to continue the good fight.
  14. Yay for Fall weather! (I'm surprised there isn't a weather thread here, now that I look.) Things are beautiful in Central Florida as the heat and humidity have finally eased up. I think the A/C is off for good until late Spring, so that's an extra $100 a month I get to not give the electric company, woot.
  15. Oh, dear. The Wedding Album hardly left my turntable when it was released in 1976. I got married that year and Satisfy You by Leon and Mary was our wedding dance song. I hope he had a fulfilling life.
  16. And will that same weak-kneed Republican leadership oppose him on some of his more unconstitutional and suppressive ideas? The Magic 8 Ball replies "don't count on it."
  17. Moved over from the Trump thread: The Dems also have to get non-voters and millennials off their asses for real. Overall voter turnout is always abysmally and embarrassingly low, but there must be some vestigial bit of caring and concern that can be ignited. I hope it comes from positive outreach and not as a result of authoritarian policies and human rights being stripped away.
  18. Article from Slate on how/why journalists failed 2016. We cannot make the same mistakes in covering the Trump presidency. Scrolling down the page is another article "Journalists Should Be Terrified." I agree and can only Trump's threats of suppression and retaliation galvanizes them into productive action. A couple of reader comments I liked (from upwards of 800): There is a difference between covering these people and giving deference to things they believe that are flatly ludicrous. They want deference and respect on a host of issues when they hold views that aren't deserving of any such thing from a serious media. But the media had become so accustomed to the ideals of balance and parity in coverage of the two American parties that it continued covering the GOP as if it hadn’t descended into quackery and madness.
  19. I apologize if this has been posted or linked already, but here's the reality by county. It's very sobering for me.
  20. Interesting post, thanks. Wright recommends that voters on both sides reach out to each other, and I agree, except I have nothing in common with the rural God and pickup crowd, nor they with me. It's an impasse. I think there's a realistic chance with the urban manufacturing/blue collar crowd, though. I've been thinking about superficial factors that influence voters, such as likeability, height, and physical appearance. Agent Orange is tall, I'll give him that, but he won despite being butt ugly and charmless. With regard to job loss being a factor in favor of Trump, the BLS unemployment rates are 4.8% for Ohio, 4.1% for Wisconsin, 4.6% for Michigan and 5.7% for Pennsylvania. The national average is 4.9%. Oh, the doctoral dissertations we'll see.
  21. I wouldn't liked to see the large family take both dogs, too. Sigh. Such incremental progress with adoptions and still more animals coming in than going out. Poor Tia. It's depressing to be laid up but must be even more so for someone who's usually so active and has so many people and animals relying on her. I'm curious if other people enjoy the segments on catching loose dogs -- there's one almost every episode so I guess they're exciting/tense? They bore me and I fast forward, but maybe I'm an outlier.
  22. Agreed. Too late for the show to act sad or be sincere now. I no longer watch the show because of their promotion of Trump, but I saw the video of Kate and wanted to say how continually impressed I am at how talented the cast are in areas other than comedy. Many of them could (and Blues Brothers did) have musical careers. Do auditions also require singing, I wonder?
  23. I do understand when doctors get behind; there are emergencies and appointments that turn complex, etc. I'm not angry about it but neither am I prepared to wait. What does chap my hide is the office booking more than one person in a time slot. If I explicitly ask for the first appointment at 8 am (and usually have to book further out for one of those slots to be available) then arrive for my appointment and am still made to wait 30 minutes, I assure you when I finally see the doctor, my voice will be a lot more Mindy Kaling than Amy Poehler. Also, most doctors I see use a sign-in sheet and call people in order of arrival, irrespective of appointment time.
  24. Modern banking is fabulous. Deposit from home, transfer money online, store documents in the cloud, get cash advances, complete mortgage pre-approvals, etc. I absolutely love auto bill pay and paperless billing. My paycheck and social security get deposited automatically. I write checks maybe twice a year to handymen or whatnot and haven't physically gone to the bank in years. I don't even have a local bank. It's not for everyone (nothing is, amiright!) but everything is such a time saver compared to the previous drill of rushing to the bank before it closed on Fridays to deposit checks, standing in teller lines to get cash, waiting for a monthly statement in order to reconcile my checkbook and needing to keep paper records of it all.
  25. I can't say I'm disappointed in Oprah because I didn't care for her to begin with, but for her to sit on her billion dollar throne and tell others we should be hopeful angries up my blood.
