TDS 3.0: Season One Talk
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
A Clinton/Trump race will be eye-opening in many ways -- two of the most hated people in America. -
The men were the target of most of the vitriol last season, if that makes it seem more balanced. She was obviously pretending again, is why I shook my head. Why not sit down with Neil and have a genuine, open, conversation about her feelings and expectations? Instead, she fake-breezily brushed him off in favor of making herself look "good" the same way she did all season.

Season One Talk: FFwSB
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Full Frontal With Samantha Bee
I'm glad to have another show I like instead of a replacement for anything. I enjoy Trevor's version of TDS -- probably more than Jon's -- and like watching how he's gradually shaping it to suit his talents and personality. It may be that any show that airs 4 days a week needs an interview portion as a bit of relief from having to write the comedy segments. Coming up with twenty or so minutes of fresh, topical, well-researched, and funny content every day is tough. See Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, Corden, and Meyers, whose monologues and comedy bits hit for me maybe a third of the time. They also resort to games and Internet video clips as fodder, plus they have far bigger budgets and staff than TDS. -
I'm not sure if it was that episode or another one I listened to, but Emerson also talked about how generally receptive and nice viewers have been to him about the show, except for gay men. He said the only negative comments the three of them get are from other gays, basically accusing them of being stereotypes. Emerson brushed it off, but I'm sure it can be a little disheartening at times. He said when the show first started even the producers told them they didn't need to pretend to be so animated. Emerson said the three of them got together to watch TV even before TPC. That's honestly how they are! Deal with it. (Although I'm sure a lot of their saltier comments are left in editing. Julie and Brandy said the same goes for their stuff.)

Brain Bleed: The Shows We Hate & The Reasons We Hate Them
zxy556575 replied to SPLAIN's topic in Everything Else TV
I want to murderize every show I've never watched but still know their cast and plots because they're fucking constantly being shoved in my face by people in my life, discussion boards, ads, news/entertainment media, etc. It's not enough for me not to watch; I genuinely don't want them to exist in the same world I do because I can't escape them otherwise. More examples, past and present: Veronica Shitting Mars Law and Order. Never one minute in the zillion seasons it and its spawn have been on. I hate that it takes up so much TV real estate. Dallas, even though that was before the Internet. True Detective, mostly because I irrationally loathe Matthew McConaughey and will never watch anything he's in. Then season 2 because it has the same name as the one McConaughey was in. Outlander, since it's yet another rape show. I don't even subscribe to premium cable channels and still know the plot. Plus its rabid fans are scary. Happy Endings. This was mostly the fault of Entertainment Weekly, who just would not let it go. The Sopranos -

Interesting discussion about depression in comedians; too bad Trevor didn't really follow up. I've read quite a few interviews with him and it's not something he's talked about that I've seen. -
Considering your name, I believe it. ;)

S01.E07: The Mayakovsky Circumstances
zxy556575 replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in The Magicians [V]
If I'm remembering correctly, Kady's mother Hannah asked Marina for help cleaning up after a spell/heist gone wrong, and Marina subsequently held that over Kady's head in order to keep her in servitude. That's why Mayakovsky told Kady that she was free from Marina now that Hannah was dead. I'm curious about Mayakovsky's relation with Brakebill's -- why not just have him on campus if he's a part of the faculty? Even adjunct. I suppose it's just atmospheric. I liked him but could have done without quite so much emphasis on the Russian drunkenness stereotype. I nodded my head sympathetically at Kady's dilemma because, yes, Brakebill's is indeed an unforgiving place and they absolutely would inflict punishment for her transgressions, whether she was under duress or not. I'm interested to see where she ends up, not the least because of her relationships with Penny, who continues to be the main draw for me on the show. Tattoo on, tattoo off. Poor guy doesn't know if he's coming or going. -
Well. That was just ... weird. I don't like Bill and don't see the point.

I've been eyeing Parenthood lately in my Netflix queue, if only as a break from my recent diet of science fiction. I could never quite hit Play, though, because of my distaste for Lauren Graham. She "acts" the same on talk shows as she did as Lorelai, so I'm inclined to believe that's her real personality. Anyway, thanks for the warning! Maybe I'll just rewatch Everwood.

It did take me out of the story when Harry didn't bother picking up his other sneaker after being roughed up. Was it supposed to make me feel even sorrier for him that he was walking in one shoe? It just struck a false note. The MASH joke made me smile, but why in hell would Jake say he served in the first place? In a conversation with an actual veteran, no less. Keep your story (and lies) simple, Jake!

I was watching some of Emerson's old radio shows on YouTube and one from 2014 with Julie and Brandy mentioned that it would be fun to mix and match some of the couchies for a special episode. I think we've mentioned that here before, but Bravo needs to do it now! Who would you swap? If I was thinking about his comfort, I'd put Rashawn with Kenya and Amanda, but if I was for my amusement, then he'd be with Ayn and Sue.

Welcome, PamelaMaeSnap! Most of the posters here love the show and have a lot of fun watching.

The Show: Sad Pibbles and Happy Tails

Yes, all good wishes to Earl. My tears this week were for the humans on the show. I'm concerned about his finances and his house as well. Don't know how someone without savings can afford to take a month or more off work, much less pay for rehab. My assumption, since Tia mentioned it, I'm hoping the surgeon who operated on Earl's shoulder found a place that would take Earl at no charge. About the rescue of Sunflower/Tree -- Tia again emphasized that Tania had never been on a rescue by herself before, which still seems odd to me since the girls have grown up in VRC. I suppose it was just taken for granted that Tia would do them all, but she doesn't even live in NO any more. And sorry, but Sunflower's snarl and lunge (without contact) towards Matt during her rescue was not the totally frightening and life-threatening event that it's been played up to be, over and over. I'm still thinking a little about cages. The only rescue facilities I'm familiar with other than city shelters are Best Friends in Utah and Cesar Milan's place, both of which house their animals in groups within large penned areas. No kennels or crates. Maybe that's Tia's intention for the new VRC property that the kids worked to get fenced. Anyway, the people who know dogs and have the necessary space seem to agree that it's preferable not to kennel them when possible. Now that I think about it, whenever we see shots of staff walking the dogs in the background or as part of a particular story, it's always one by one. The dogs don't seem to have much individual or group social interactions with each other. -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

My doctor gave a hard side eye to my latest urinalysis results and told me I need to drink more water. Fine. Seems like the least I can do for my kidneys since they (uncomplainingly, so far) do so much for me. Also, I ignore a lot of her other advice so feel like this evens me up a little on the "non-compliant patient" scale. But dang! I'm on day three now and there's a lot of peeing. I'd also prefer to sleep through the night. -

Here's another controversial sick leave issue. I change my own damned mind depending on the person and situation. My company allows everyone to take sick time to care for relatives. Most of the time this naturally is people's children. I've never had a male who reports to me ask for it, but the women do all the time. I don't have kids, so there's that. Now, I absolutely understand when a child gets sick or is sent home from school or day care, then one of the parents must go home and care for the child. As a supervisor who has to maintain a specified level of call center staffing, it can make me sigh, but again, I get it. But then ... there are people whose kids sure seem to get sick a lot. I'd expect it to happen consistently across the board, but it doesn't. My biggest gripe is That One Person who has a full-time nanny and still asks for leave. In fact, she uses 3 times as much sick leave and personal appointment time as the next highest person in my department. Frankly, I do get annoyed at her. -

Full confession -- I've only had one dog in my life and that was in the 70s, so way before the general popularity of crate training. I had to look it up a decade or so ago when a co-worker mentioned it in relation to her newly adopted dog and I wondered to myself why anyone would do that. Didn't ask her, of course, so as not to reveal my ignorance. ;) But it does seem to be accepted as the "kind" way to handle dogs these days. From the Human Society website: Crate training uses a dog's natural instincts as a den animal. A wild dog's den is his home, a place to sleep, hide from danger, and raise a family. The crate becomes your dog's den, an ideal spot to snooze or take refuge during a thunderstorm. - The primary use for a crate is housetraining. Dogs don't like to soil their dens. - The crate can limit access to the rest of the house while he learns other rules, like not to chew on furniture. - Crates are a safe way to transport your dog in the car. I'm not trying to stir up an argument and as I said, I'm not even a dog owner, but it still sounds like it's more for the convenience of the human than the dog. Although the dogs I've seen on shows like this seem quite content. It mostly amuses me to think of trying to put my cat in one. -
I'd really like to see Julie Goldman & Brandy Howard from The People's Couch. Since I mentioned that Wheaton hasn't been a guest for a while and was informed that he's scheduled next week, I expect Julie and Brandy to be invited pronto. Make it so!

I found this when looking for the Pee Wee/Pringles clip -- apparently Emerson has a radio show (who knew) with Del Shores (had to look him up). Here's an episode of the show with Brandy and Julie as guests. They come on at about 15 minutes, but the first part is also worth watching to see a professional, political, and thoughtful side of Emerson.
-
Ooh! You just gave me an idea -- if I can find a clip of Nacho snatching Julie's chip, I'll submit it as an entry for King of Disparate TV Things Mountain. Do we think Cathy is the older sister? Their dynamic switches back and forth for me on which one is the bossiest. On today's rewatch: - Teddi was finally pleased about something, even if it was only her new popcorn popper. - I side with Emerson on the Miracle Whip vs mayonnaise debate. - I want to sample some of Amanda's ghetto stir fry. - Ross Matthews did indeed lose weight, Princella, before gaining it all back (feel ya, brother!) - Brandy threatening to tear Julie's face off if she ever tried to end their friendship. - Still not sure if the building collapse in Vinyl was real or hallucination. Likewise, is that Walking Dead person really dead?

I agree, and it's a shame that staff often get punished, subtly or overtly, for taking sick leave. My company has an "acceptable" level of sick time and just prior to annual evaluations, I get a report of anyone who exceeded it (along with excessive time taken for professional appointments). It's one of the factors used to justify lower review scores and thus raises and bonuses. -

Neil's build-up was definitely misleading, and deliberately so. He's a smart guy and as others have said, it was exactly the same as any number of Bachelor, Ryan Seacrest, Gordon Ramsay, etc. reality show gotchas. He could have phrased it in a number of different ways, but chose the one that would stick it to Sam (and perhaps the experts) the most. It wasn't a "nice" thing to do but did make for a tense and unexpected TV moment, which I'm sure the producers appreciated. This was the couple that viewers were the most uncertain about, and I was certainly fooled and assumed Neil was winding his way to a Yes. I've liked Neil from the start and this didn't make me think less of him. I probably even grinned a little, but then, I'm a sarcastic and caustic person who enjoys a bit of well-earned comeuppance and schadenfreude. Sorry-not-sorry, Sam. -
Aha! My wish is their command! I wonder how much industry recognition and/or gigs the comics actually get from being on this show -- does it help their careers at all? There are a few I'd never heard of before the show who I'd now go see if they were performing in my area, but that's not saying much.

You're right, there is a lot of unconscious body language mirroring that happens between the girls, led by Rachel and Sarah. Joe, not so much. The Egbers were also pretty squashed together on their bed. Maybe there's a psychology research paper in there. Or the team from Lie To Me could get together again and tell us which people on all reality shows are faking it! Speaking of, I don't watch that kiddie dance show, but what is the owner's damage? She realizes she's being filmed, right? What a weirdo.
