Jimmy Kimmel Live - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to David T. Cole's topic in Jimmy Kimmel Live
This is not restricted to Kimmel, but it makes me roll my eyes when someone who has a new a baby acts like it's their first child when it isn't. Kimmel has two grown children, including another daughter. The talk about "my daughter" in reference to his youngest is annoying. Jimmy talks to guests like he's never had babies or toddlers before. I feel bad for the older children who have seemingly been scrubbed from memory, is what it is. -
The Carmichael Show - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Skyfall's topic in The Carmichael Show
Didn't finish watching the gentrification episode. Done. Bobby and Nekeisha are sitcom cartoons, Maxine and Jerrod have zero chemistry and I have no idea why they're even a couple. DAG isn't reason enough to watch. -
Grim, tortured Geordie and wracked, unhappy Sidney. How fun. Annoying Amanda is the cherry on top of the heaping pile. I don't expect this to be a cozy English country series, but a bit of relief from the unrelenting dreariness would be nice.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
zxy556575 replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Content and peaceful. You know what's worse than "boring?" Rudeness. Cheese, who would say such a thing to another person? People, trying to be kind, have told me I should get out more and offered activities. Sometimes their faces get squinchy because I'm "all alone." Hello? That's by choice. If I wanted to, there's nothing stopping me from joining 20 different clubs or playing sports or going out to bars or driving down to Disney World every week to see shows. I went to see Paula Poundstone when she was here. Happy? -
A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here
zxy556575 replied to potatoradio's topic in Everything Else
Thanks, BookWoman56! I phrased my question poorly -- was trying to ask who people thought did get in trouble afterwards. The guy who showed his screen and who was participating in the mocking pretty much had no consequences. His boss spoke to him about expected work etiquette and he apologized to her and the other person he had made fun of. The supervisor who was on the other end of the IM with him got fired, the thinking being that she was in a higher position and should be setting an example. Since she reported to me, I also got a lot of blowback because her decisions and actions are apparently my doing. It got worse when I tried to defend her and prevent her from being fired (she was my most productive employee). I was made to take an online course on managing difficult people. The most aggravating and hypocritical part is that our HR manager, who fully participated in this witch trial, herself has a history of IMing during meetings to remark how much she dislikes person X, how useless the meeting is, etc. This was partly what made me decide to retire early, along with the new imbecilic Director of Support who has fostered such attitudes. -

Scene: A group call via GoToMeeting with about 15 attendees from various departments. People were taking turns doing presentations. When it's his turn, a new-ish hire shows his screen, which includes his IM window where he and another person had been making mocking comments about the presentations, including one by his boss. He left it visible on screen for a good 10 seconds before realizing his mistake, which gave us all plenty of time to soak it in. If not, the meeting was also being recorded. Relevant cast of characters: The guy who showed his screen, a QA tech The women he was chatting with, a support supervisor Me, the support supervisor's manager Who do you think should have been written up/spoken to out of those three? -
There was a point when my sister and I were around 12 and 13 that my dad told us to stop calling him daddy. Creeped him out and, "You're not babies any more.

Why can't any of these danged companies get their user interfaces right? My first priority is to easily find the shows I'm currently watching and pick up where I left off. None of the three I use -- Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon -- make that easy, although Netflix does it better than the other two. Amazon is the worst because you can only add shows to your watchlist by season. All three have mediocre search engines and recommendation algorithms. IMDB does a good job matching similar shows after a search, so it is possible. Netflix has a very nice list of all available episodes with summaries that can be accessed directly from the scroll bar at any time, even during playback, and you can easily navigate between seasons and episodes. Amazon makes you exit the player in order to view the episode list and Hulu makes you scroll down and page right > right > right. Hulu has the 10-second rewind. Why can't the others add something similar? It's incredibly useful when navigating because the slider is difficult to position exactly when going forward or backwards. And Amazon doesn't even show the thumbnail screen shots when you mouseover the slider to see what's playing at any specific time. Is it a difficult technical challenge add fast-forward and reverse arrows to the players? None of the services offer that. I should say I always stream on a laptop or tablet directly from the websites; perhaps the TV apps are better.

I think my favorite part was John mentioning that Obama and Clinton had both voted in favor of the Secure Border Fence Act, although they both later danced back when campaigning. Clinton: "I think when both of us voted for this, we were voting for the possibility that where it was appropriate and made sense, it would be considered," said Clinton. "But as with so much, the Bush administration has gone off the deep end, and they are unfortunately coming up with a plan that I think is counterproductive."

I'd like to see more of their dancing, if they haven't dropped that. I suppose it doesn't sell records. -
Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

I have never in my life entered my residence in the nighttime and not turned on a light right away, yet no one on TV does. I guess that's what makes it "suspenseful". -

Bastet, I hope today will be better for you! This probably doesn't help, but I live in podunk Florida where there is no Chinese food delivery. Also no good Chinese restaurants, if it comes to that. Most places around here close at 9 pm, anyway. Another customer service peeve: Why do online chat agents ask me for my information when I'm already logged into my account on their danged website? Here's an example from this morning: Carter R.: May I please have your full name, delivery and mailing address including zip code, phone number and email address so I can access your account information? you: I'm currently logged in from my account, which has that information. Is it not available to you? [crickets] you: My email is [i'mAnnoyed@irritation.net]. that should be sufficient to locate my account, along with the reference number I gave you. Carter R.: One moment please... Carter R.: I have located your account using the email address. you: Swell Carter R.: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment. -
I just looked up The Nines and nobody would even know Melissa is in it, according to the advertising materials! Is it worth watching for $2.99? Reviews are 15% one star and 40% five stars.

In Memoriam: Entertainment Industry Celebrity Deaths

I'm wondering if any of the streaming services will add either or both of Garry's series. The DVD sets for both are currently out of stock on Amazon, but this is a little odd: The Larry Sanders Show - The Complete Series = $20.49 It's Garry Shandling's Show: The Complete Series = $101.19 The first seems like quite the bargain for 6 seasons. I backordered it. -
Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion

Really nice tribute from Seth to Garry Shandling. -
That "Attention Viewers" insert about Tay (and the meta reason it had to be inserted) may be the funniest thing the show has done in months. On another note, Chris should try to stop fixating on Reddit/online comments about him.

Ten years ago, I quit my (hated) job and moved from Denver to Austin. I didn't have a position lined up but assumed it wouldn't be too hard to find since I have experience up the wazoo. Didn't figure on age discrimination, but another story. It ended up taking me 7 months to find work and, due to preexisting medical conditions, I could not get health insurance to save my life. Anything. State, Federal, Medicaid, personal policy. I ended up taking a job as a receptionist for $22K just for the insurance. Cue to last December when I quit work again due to a change in management. I had 10 months to go until Medicare kicked in, but what a different experience! I was able to sign up for a Marketplace health plan online and nobody could refuse me. So I am personally VERY grateful for and appreciative of Obamacare. I'm sure millions of others like me are, too.

zxy556575 replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Funny you say that. I have a reputation for being "private" that is wholly undeserved. Honestly, I'll blab anything. But they have to ask! I have chronic medical conditions but there's nothing more boring to others. I don't bring it up myself but am happy to chat otherwise: "How are you feeling lately?" If people don't ask, it doesn't mean I'm hiding shit; it means they haven't shown any interest. -
Sometimes it's hard to separate the person from the character. There aren't currently any women who bother me, but I refuse to watch or support any entertainment that features several male actors because of my distaste (warranted or not) for them personally. I enjoy Melissa but she seems to have typecast herself into those slapsticky kind of roles in movies that aren't of much interest to me. Has she ever been allowed to be someone's love interest in her movie roles? At least Gilmore Girls and Mike and Molly showed her as being sexually desirable/courtable.

Thanks for that reminder, amaranta. Garry always seemed like a super kind and nice guy personally. Neurotic, but sweet. I was entranced by It's Garry Shandling's Show during its original run and caught up on Larry Sanders later on. What a great comic mind. I really hope he didn't suffer. Courtesy of Rolling Stone, Garry's 10 best TV moments. -
I started to watch maybe 2-3 times but was never engaged enough to continue past the first couple of episodes. When the show started turning up on so many "best of the year" lists, I gave it another try. Managed to make it to the end but still didn't really get the appeal. I thought Aziz in particular was mediocre, rushing through his lines and never really being present in his performance. The acting awards and accolades for him in were surprising to me.

Oh, lord. Now that you mention it! I am mis-remembering because there was also one episode recently where

Karen Page: Friend, Mediator, Non-Caped Crusader

I'll say this for Karen -- she's sure divisive! ;) I think there have been posts in the Unpopular Opinions thread about liking her and not liking her being unpopular. If anyone can figure out how to create a poll, it'd be interesting to see. -
Most of these shows would likely not be for you, Scout Finch. A lot of our time is spent crying, both happy and sad. Death happens on all the series I watch except Dog Town.
