  1. My great aunt was the only female in her law school in the 20s. Always wore trousers, in the Katharine Hepburn style. Her name was Winifred but she went by Pat. Never married, she lived with a friend for 30+ years. She died in 1976 but it wasn't until 20 years after her death that it suddenly occurred to me: d'oh!! If anyone in the family knew/guessed -- her siblings or my parents -- they certainly never spoke of or even alluded to it in front of me. Her father was a Lutheran minister.
  2. This is (purportedly) new technology for a skin-based touch screen. It all looks photoshopped at this point.
  3. I honestly did not realize until tonight that Michelle -- weight loss, hair, makeup, whatever -- is gorgeous.
  4. What a sweet memory. Do families go for Sunday drives any more? My grandparents would take my sister and me in the 50s; this was in San Diego so we drove into outside the city and went rock hunting. Would elementary age kids these day enjoy that, I wonder? You made me look it up! Beautiful.
  5. Haha! And even today, still true.
  6. Thinking about Patsy not being able to be her true self, I wondered how I would have reacted in the 60s if I found out someone I knew was gay. Puzzled, maybe? I mean, gayness wasn't even part of the cultural vocabulary at the time -- nobody even thought Liberace was gay! He was just a "real entertainer." The concept of being gay didn't exist back then. Except for places like NY and Hollywood, I suppose, but I lived in deep-dyed suburbia. I also got to wondering about the coat hanger abortion, as in: how would a woman even do that? The cervix isn't that easy to find without a speculum and mirror. If the idea is to somehow force the wire up through the cervix, well. That's a very small, slippery opening.
  7. So true! If I've pulled some bone-headed move and know I was wrong, I will do anything to avoid the other driver if we're going the same direction. Like, slow down and inch along in the right lane for a while until I'm sure the other car is well ahead. If that's not possible, I hunch down in my seat, pull my shoulders up, and stare straight ahead. Too embarrassing!
  8. Stargate SG-1 has been off the air for a decade, but I only recently started watching. There's no one I know to discuss it with even if it wasn't ancient TV history. I dipped into the thread here and was shocked -- shocked, I tell you! -- to see that the character Daniel Jackson was held in unilaterally high regard. So my UO is that I can't stand him and his mealy-mouthed ways, nor do I think the actor playing him is any better than average looking. I found him fairly forgettable during the first 5 seasons and wasn't displeased when he died. It was when the show brought him back to life that the real aversion began. Damned cockroach! I started watching the series backwards, doing Universe first, then Atlantis, then SG-1. Maybe because I watched it first, Universe remains my favorite show of the franchise, which I also gather is unpopular. I suppose next I'll be UO-ing that I don't think Eddie Haskell is all that bad.
  9. I kept wondering how old the kidnapped children were, too. I'd never heard about Native Americans taking and raising Caucasian children -- what horrible trauma for them later to be ripped between two families and cultures. It's not like shared custody was a thing. What strength of character the Hoch-whatever patriarch had, resolutely affirming his beliefs and not allowing his sons to kill even in self defense. I'd like to hear his opinion of today's stand your ground laws.
  10. Since Sidney is against the death penalty, seems like he wouldn't be able, in good conscience, to even work with Geordie on murder cases anymore. Even though Sidney feeling gutted about his role in bringing Gary to justice was the heavy-handed theme of the week, I was still disappointed in his unilateral decision that Laszlo didn't deserve to be brought to justice for murder. I agree with others that Sidney is becoming my least favorite character on the show: his moping/drinking, fluctuating ethics, negligence of his duties, and fucked up romantic relationships are making it difficult for me to care what happens to him.
  11. There was a series pilot called Parallels that involved a group of people who entered a building in one time period and exited in a different parallel universe. It got great user reviews but looks like it never went to series. I really liked it. The creator spoke optimistically on Reddit about possibly continuing it, but that was a while ago. The concept still seems eminently boot-able since there are so many ways it can go. Probably expensive to produce because of all the different sets/locations.
  12. Aw, Dr. Jeff got married! Good luck to him and to the little kitten he and his staff brought back to life. Nice construction supervisor guy!
  13. Me? I started watching the Stargate series this year (backwards as it turns out, since I began with Universe and am ending with SG-1), but I never much liked Daniel and was disappointed when he started showing up again after I thought I was rid of him. He's boring to me and his schoolboy earnestness tries my patience. I was surprised when I started reading old forums posts and saw that people also thought the actor was so good looking, because I found him to be forgettably meh. Given that, I did prefer Jonas to Daniel, but mostly stuck it out for all seasons because of Teal'c, Carter and O'Neill.
  14. I'm fairly mild-mannered when driving, but cutting me off definitely pushes my buttons. Today I was on the Interstate, which I very rarely am, so was feeling a bit jangly to start with. It was windy and my RAV4 was getting buffeted a bit. I was in the far right lane of a 3-lane highway and had my cruise control set to 65 (speed limit is 70). So of course the cars behind me ran up my ass, then changed to the middle lane to go around. All well and good, until they then cut back in the slow lane about 15' in front of me. Folks, just because there's room to do that doesn't mean you should! I also had to travel along a single lane state highway that's posted at 55, but which has stop lights and residential and business driveways that feed into it, and therefore has cars turning left and right. I think 55 is far too fast for that type of road, but if I go slower, I'm impeding all the traffic behind me. This is why when I leave my residential 40-sq mile community with its max speed of 35 mph, someone else drives.
  15. A bunch of awesomely frozen, open-mouthed reaction shots this week. I reallyreally wish Bravo would make a compilation video. Animated flies could zoom in! Kenya, wistfully: "That cake looked like it was super moist, too." Her breasts were on blast tonight in that charcoal heather tank top! Hey, Scott and your gummy bears? Remember that nothing ever tastes as good as being skinny feels. You taught me that. I'm not sure whether I like it better when the couchies are familiar with the shows because they bring more knowledgeable snark, or when they haven't watched at all before, because of the shock and surprise. Can I choose both? While I'd like to think Princella is my spirit animal, I'm pretty sure it's Joe Resnick (minus the handsiness).
  16. Rainbow unicorn bride? I mean, good for her if she and her groom are happy with their wedding, but all I could think of when she was talking about her decorations of forest animal candles, rainbows, and gummy bears was the look on David Tutera's face. What happened to all those pale blue and blush dresses from a couple of seasons ago? Is that trend over now?
  17. Haha! That tickles me. What did raise my eyebrows about the tale was that any grocery would carry 100 cans of chunky Campbell's soup, especially back then when huge superstores weren't common. Since Cruz named-checked Campbell's, I looked it up -- the chunky line was introduced in 1971, so that part is plausible.
  18. I did appreciate that, even though Monique is very religious, she was still accepting of Jolanda and Cherrise joining her Bible study group. Monique also mentioned that if she ever needed to choose between Vivian and Jolanda, it would be Vivian (because: freaking matriarch). Oh, please! In what world can a person not be individual friends with two women just because they don't like each other? The whole "friendship circle" is odder and odder to me as we go along. I'd need a corkboard with photos, pushpins and string to keep all the separate feuds and shit-stirring straight.
  19. This puts me in mind of Michael Jackson. Can you imagine? From LaToya's autobiography: "Michael and I were very active in the Jehovah's Witness faith. ... Five days a week the two of us and Mother studied the Bible at home and attended the Kingdom Hall. ... Every morning Michael and I witnessed, knocking on doors around Los Angeles, spreading the word of Jehovah. ... As my brother's fame grew, he had to don convincing disguises, like a rubber fat suit he bought years later."
  20. I was curious, so here's the link. Clinton looks a ton better but wow, that second image in the gallery is amazing! I so wish the show would give the artists enough time to do their best work -- it would benefit the clients, the artists, and us as viewers.
  21. I'm pretty mainstream and didn't like it. So there's one. :)
  22. I don't know why any of the women are on this show, or even why they're friends. I had hoped it was going to be about lawyering, but so far it's been 80% arguments, grudges, recriminations, and shouting. The look on Rhonda's son's face when she joined his party in her bathing suit, oy. Following the letter of the law while completely undermining its intent much? "I promised I wouldn't wear a bikini." I guess we should be grateful she didn't come out naked. I was so relived that Linda got a no-bill from the grand jury! The penal system intending to revoke her bond and throw her back in jail because she's poor was disgraceful. I did think it was snotty of Jolanda to put Monique on blast to Linda for "losing" the motion about home monitoring. We as viewers have no idea what Jolanda could possibly have argued that was any different, and that judge was completely intractable to Monique. I like that Tiye is going to be on the show. She doesn't have the history the others do so I hope will be wrangling with everyone a lot less. She doesn't back down from a fight, though. Well, the whole cast are extremely strong-minded and not about to just take a Percocet and let something go. The above article said Jolanda was on Survivor in 2005 and was the first person voted off. I can see that!
  23. I didn't do any fact-checking so took it with a slight grain of salt, but was surprised about Trump's allegedly piss-poor campaign management. It supports my belief that he never honestly believed he would get this far and his run was just meant to be another self-promotion gambit. It is dumbfounding that nobody else on his team seems to understand the rules, either, but he may be trying to wing that himself, just like he says he's his own advisor. And of course Trump is blaming the rules!
  24. With regards to discussions boards, if others also post to disagree with Person A, they're "piling on" or "ganging up" on the bullying. Balls! Person A needs to accept that he/she has a minority viewpoint and stop being so damned butt hurt.
  25. Interesting, thanks. It's certainly fair to gauge Stephen's success against his timeslot competitors, but I wonder how's in doing in comparison to Letterman? I don't think Dave had consistently widespread social media buzz, either. He himself said that was one reason why he was retiring -- that he didn't understand the whole "viral video" thing. And only 570K Facebook likes? Ouch.
