Comfort Food Books: Which Ones Call You Back, Again and Again?
proserpina65 replied to CalamityBoPeep's topic in Books
I actually broke a decades-long habit and did not re-read The Long Winter yesterday. Not sure why, exactly. Maybe because my power was out and thus the heat was off, making the unheated house/reading by candlelight hit a little too close to home. -
It's Trainspotting, but otherwise I absolutely agree.

International Soccer/Football & UEFA Champions League

Way to go, Leicester! They might be tanking in the Premiership this season, but at least they have the Champions League going for them. -
Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads

Okay, so now I want that yogurt (Fage is by far the best Greek yogurt on the US market and the flavor combo sounds yummy), but yeah, why is he eating yogurt in the shower? -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

On the eye subject: Those commercials for Xiidra claiming that it's the first prescription eye drop approved by the FDA to treat dry eye signs and symptoms is more than a bit misleading. Apparently the difference between Xiidra and Restasis (which has been around for about a decade) is that the latter only treats the signs of dry eye and the underlying disease by increasing tear production, whereas the former also treats the symptoms such as redness and irritation. (And I guess the alleviation of symptoms happens more quickly as a result.) Now, what the commercial says isn't actually wrong, but it could be clearer about what it's claiming. -
I missed yesterday's game due to a snow-related power outage, but looking at J! Archive, I see I would've run the board in the Jeopardy round, and gotten most, though not all, of the right answers in Double Jeopardy. Plus FJ was an easy one for me, probably because I've read/seen things set in Jakarta. Of course, that would've been from the comfort of my couch, where no one ever buzzes in faster. ;-) Man, of all the games to miss!

Derek Jacobi - that is all.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

I'd say a sizeable number of people who have Medicare aren't aware of everything which might be covered. But a lot of Medicare-related commercials do seem to be shilling snake-oil products. -
Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

And I'd cut a bitch for chocolate. -
I should've gotten this, but I got caught up in the notion that the character was named for the word in question, rather than the word coming into usage because it was the character's name. I'm so glad to see the last of the smug unemployed bartender. And I actually liked the contestant who replaced her, which is a plus. Add me to those who are sad that no one got Stevie Nicks. I remember riding around in the car listening to stuff off Bella Donna as a teenager. Yes, I am old.

I kind of liked the first flat. It was small, but that's what I'd expect for that close to central London. It actually had a good sized bedroom and bathroom, and a decent sized kitchen and lounge. Plus it had that nice terraced bit in the back. The overbearing mother really bugged me, and I was hoping the son would take that one just to spite her. Although his "I don't wanna walk 15 minutes to the Tube station" also annoyed me. I lived in London for several months, in Kensington, and my walk to the Tube station was roughly that amount of time; even though I disliked exercise, cold weather and rain, it was not a big deal.

I actually thought Jackson was being an ass. And all the dick measuring could've killed that patient. Thank goodness Ben was actually thinking of what was best for the patient and was the calm one in that OR.

Well, fuck. Another day of Annie to not look forward to. FJ seemed easy to me. I just thought of a tiny country with mostly male population and Vatican City came instantly to mind.
-
I hated how many guesses there were, how many stumpers, how many clues left on the board. And most of all, I hated Annie. I know it, because I keep my Christmas tree up until at least then, but due to a brain fart, I couldn't come up with Twelfth Night - I just got stuck on Illyria for some reason. I, like John Paul, said Hava Nagila for that clue, and didn't remember that Don Adams did the voice of Inspector Gadget, although I should've known that one because the girls I used to baby sit loved that cartoon.

I didn't mind Joyce most of the time, but there are some episodes where she seemed really gullible about supernatural stuff, and I found that odd for someone who is married to a police officer. Cully, on the other hand, was a waste of oxygen, except for Scott's first episode when he jumped in the river to rescue her and thus got wet.

Michelle Yeoh is the captain of another ship to be featured on the show, not the main character's ship.

I know the producers want the contestants to say the full category name the first time they pick it (at least they did when I was on), but after that? Yeah, just pick the most important word and use that. I knew the FJ clue referred to the French Revolution, but it took me a moment to come up with the correct year. Still would've had plenty of time to right it down. I got threadbare and Jezebel, but couldn't come up with lead foot or big horn sheep to save my life. I wanted to say ironic, but the clue confused me because it didn't seem to be the correct definition. Oh well, sometimes it's good to go with your first instincts. Apparently the 'Beyhive' are abuzz over the Becky with the Good Hair category. I found both the category title and the stupid reaction to it amusing.

I've been going between The Band's Greatest Hits, The Best of Blondie, and Wild World by Bastille.

I did read something to that effect after I posted. Still, you want to make a point about off-pitch/training behavior? Fine him or something like that. Or heck, even if Arsene had left him out of the starting lineup but brought him into the match sooner, it might've helped. I know, Arsenal is like this every season; you'd think I'd be used to it by now. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

I don't think they accidentally recycled the season one golem plot. It seemed to me to be a deliberate recall to what happened to Jeremy, and was intended to evoke something of a paternal connection between Ichabod and Molly. Now, whether or not they succeeded, that's another story.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
proserpina65 replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
I think this one may be the anti-smoking commercial, and personally, if it gets one person to stop smoking (or keeps them from starting), they can run it a thousand times a day on my tv and I'd be alright with it. Edited to note that my dad died of cancer which may have been related to his having smoked from the time he was 8 or 9 until he was in his sixties, so I do take this one more personally than most people would. -
I don't think it has anything to do with being cute. It's all about the judges' inconsistency - sometimes they require a more specific answer and sometimes not, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why. Add me to those lamenting the non-finishing of the hedgehog category. Those suckers are cute. I also wanted to see the last clue in the 1100 category because I was running that one. FJ was an instaget for me. But I'll confess to saying "Inferno" instead of "Angels and Demons" - they're all crap anyway.
