That was the assumption I made, that she'd be willing to accept help now. And unlike a lot of you here, I didn't think the cousin was being portrayed as a villain. Yes, she seemed a little unsympathetic at first, but as the episode went on, I thought she warmed up.

Given that the cousin's husband had brought all the baby stuff to Marnie's flat, I don't think he and the cousin will be asking for a repayment of the money they gave her to pay off her bills. I don't think they'll end up on the street now. Downton Abbey

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
proserpina65 replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
If someone is concerned about making a financial plan to keep the family solvent in the future, they can miss a little league or a yoga class once in a while to consult with their financial planner. The woman in that commercial annoys the crap out of me, because almost everything she lists as reasons why she's not available is something which can be skipped on occasion. It's not about fortune; it's about financial planning for the future, and making sure the family is taken care of down the road. -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

I suspect they must do some good because otherwise they wouldn't spend the money to keep running them. (I'll confess to not watching them, though.) -
There are moments here and there after that episode which are still good, but yeah, they are much fewer and farther between. The earlier ones had some intriguing ideas. I will confess to watching all of Galactica 1980 because I thought Barry Van Dyke and Kent McCord were cute, and because I wanted to know what happened to Starbuck. (I am, and will always be, Dirk Benedict's bitch.) But yeah, it was crap, if occasionally unintendedly hilarious.

Zachary Taylor - he died of some non-specific digestive problem (his doctor called it "cholera morbus" which covered a lot of things, but not actual cholera, apparently) after supposedly consuming a large quantity of fruit and iced milk at a holiday celebration/fund-raising event at the Washington Memorial.

I was amused by Garrett's reaction to Jonah's tie, though. And yeah, who'd a thunk that Cheyenne would be the voice of reason?

I meant that the dangers of smoking weren't common knowledge amongst the general public. And the potential effects to the unborn children if their mothers smoked was not widely known amongst the medical community.

I have to say, as someone who always needs to know where the closest bathroom is, I loved that Bill's first question in the Tardis was about the bathroom.
-
Agreed. I missed Gabriel Garcia Marquez, though. I knew who they wanted but could not get the name out of my brain in time.
-
Yep, my mother smoked all the way through 3 pregnancies in the early 60s. People didn't really know back then. When I saw the lock of hair in the picture frame, I wondered if it was from an earlier baby (not the husband), and I saw the grandmother's reaction to the daughter, I immediately thought of the one story in The Joy Luck Club. I just knew she was thinking of a female child she'd had who'd died of cold-related problems.

I only got Jimmy Carter BECAUSE of Alex's bad Southern accent. Periscope was easy for me, but then, I like naval stuff. I got pheasant under glass, Lou Gehrig, San Diego (a total guess), grog, and Ft. Wayne (Hi there, Mad Anthony!). I agree that they shouldn't have accepted Canadian geese for Canada geese. And I, too, was saying "Pat, Pat S-something, not Summerall but something like that".

My mother adores John Wayne. I grew up being forced to watch his movies, and I hated him. I've mellowed on him as an adult, and can appreciate some of his movies while hating others. But I understand completely. And I second the recommendation of Silverado, which is not a typical western.

Sir Laurence Olivier once said he did Inchon because the Moonies paid him a lot of money to do it. I've always respected his honesty. It's the big paycheck crap that makes the good stuff possible for a lot of actors. I have to confess: every time I see the commercial for Amy Schumer's new movie, I wanna go all Elvis on my tv. She's the most obnoxious person I've ever had the displeasure of seeing on a tv or movie screen, and that commercial is the epitome of why.

I'd hope that too, except it's in a better place, really. A retired seamen's home probably doesn't have a lot of visitors and not nearly as much to do as Nonnatus House. It made me feel less angry at Sister Ursula for taking the tv away when I found out where it went. And Sister Monica Joan can still watch it.

There was one thing in one episode which I found funny: the bit where Alan's girlfriend is in a CSI-like tv show, and it uses the Who's "Squeezebox" as the theme song. It was only funny to me because a friend who is a huge Who fan and I have a running joke about CSI: Peoria, and its theme song, "Boris the Spider". Other than that, this show was just gross and offensive to me.

I did what I always seem to do when tire-related clues come up on Jeopardy: answered Firestone.

Not for me. I actually like most of the other regulars more than I do Meredith, and can do without focusing on her journey. So, if I have to watch lame bottle episodes, I'd rather they not be all about the amazingness that is Mere. Oh, and Meredith, you had TWO other sisters besides Maggie, and still have one of them. If I ever got on a plane and saw her, I'd get right back off, that's for sure.

One of my favorite detour tasks ever was assembling a desk in the world's largest IKEA in Sweden during AR6 (the one with the pro wrestlers, Lena & Kristy, and He Who Must Not Be Named & Victoria). Mainly because I so would've rocked that task. Admittedly, they did have a manual for that one, whereas the teams in Zanzibar didn't, but this task did not look that complicated if you took a minute to examine the pieces before starting. The drive thru at the Sands Hotel & Casino in Vegas? (Yeah, I know, it's long gone :-( but I miss it.) I was really disappointed in Becca's behavior after realizing their passports were missing. (Was it both or just Floyd's?) I'm hoping that she calms down after the first flush of panic and anger, and apologizes on camera to Floyd. If not, my estimation of her will go down considerably and I won't be able to root for that team. Which is a shame because I really like Floyd, especially after how he treated the cab driver who brought the passport(s) to the hotel.

Even if it's not, they have two trips now, so they could split them.

Oh man, why did it have to be Seth & Olive instead of Mr. "Ow, My Balls!"? Love that Liz and Michael have gone from screw ups to being quietly competent. I was inclined to like Redmond, but he was pretty obnoxious on this leg, and his behavior to Vanck after finding out about the U-Turn was borderline bullying. I didn't like that the U-Turn came at the beginning of the Detour instead of after the task like usual.

I should've gotten FJ, but didn't. The "6/6/76" didn't resonate for me. All I could think of was Jaws and I was fairly certain that's never been remade. Concur on the MST3K stumper. Not even geeky Greg got it.

They used that cover over the Apollo 11 launch on The Astronaut Wives Club - I ended up downloading it immediately afterward. I don't mind some board-hopping, especially late in the game, but it's pointless to do it early in the first round. No one generally has enough money to make hitting the Daily Double early worth the annoyance.
